Bongani Bingwa speaks to Dr Nasiphi Moyo, Mayor of Tshwane, about the sweeping clean-up operation currently underway in Pretoria’s inner city. Over the past week, several buildings posing as bars, clubs, and “gentlemen’s spots” have been shut down after authorities uncovered that they were operating as fronts for brothels, human trafficking networks, and a range of illicit activities. City enforcement teams have been combing through the CBD, closing unsafe establishments, arresting suspects, and enforcing by-laws that have long gone ignored. The raids have also revealed undocumented workers, drug dens, and troubling signs of collusion between certain city officials and criminal operators. As frustration grows among residents demanding safer streets and a revitalised capital, Mayor Moyo says this is only the first phase of a broader effort to reclaim the city. She joins us this morning to unpack what’s happening on the ground and outline what comes next in Tshwane’s aggressive clean-up campaign. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Gauteng High Court judge Portia Phahlane and the leader of the Jerusalem faction of the International Pentecost Holiness Church, Michael Sandlana appeared in court yesterday on charges of corruption and money laundering. Prosecutors allege Sandlana paid millions of rands in bribes to Judge Phahlane while she was hearing the church's bitter leadership succession dispute. Both accused were released on bail of one hundred thousand rand each. The case is postponed to February. The Judicial Service Commission has confirmed Judge Phahlane has been placed on special leave. For more on this Oscar Mathafa, MP and ANC Whip in the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development spoke to Elvis Presslin
Civil society groups in South Africa have launched a high court application to force authorities to stop what they call xenophobic vigilantes blocking access to healthcare facilities in Gauteng. The groups, including Médecins Sans Frontières and the Treatment Action Campaign, say patients are being turned away from clinics due to their nationality or lack of identity documents. They're calling for the authorities to ensure safe access to healthcare and remove anyone obstructing medical services. The organisations accuse the state of failing to uphold the Constitution and protect the right to healthcare. Elvis Presslin spoke to Director of Advocacy and Analysis at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Claire Waterhouse
Ray White speaks to Lehlohonolo Thobela, Meteorologist and Weather Forecaster at the South African Weather Service, about the increasingly volatile weather patterns sweeping across the country. Thobela explains that the recent hail, thunder and heavy downpours are likely just the beginning, with early next year expected to bring even more intense and frequent storms. Gauteng, already gearing up for a week of dramatic skies, will see powerful systems early in the week followed by lighter showers into the weekend. While the rainfall offers relief to some farmers, others face mounting losses as crops suffer under severe conditions. With major dams such as the Vaal and Bloemhof still sitting at high levels after days of relentless rain, authorities are closely managing water flows to reduce the risk of flooding. Thobela breaks down what’s happening now, what South Africans can expect in the months ahead, and how best to prepare for a potentially rough summer season. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Ray White speaks to Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, as South Africa begins its annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This year, the government’s message is sharper and more urgent: the fight against GBV cannot be confined to a two-week campaign, it demands unwavering commitment throughout the year. Chikunga outlines a national call to action urging men, women, young people, filmmakers, the media and civil society to step beyond symbolic gestures and work collectively to end violence. Meanwhile, Gauteng launched its provincial campaign, and government introduced a new GBVF Dashboard designed to provide real-time data, transparency and accountability. The initiative comes in the wake of last week’s powerful march, where survivors and activists reiterated that gender-based violence has been a devastating pandemic long before Covid-19 and remains unresolved. On the show today, we examine the widening gap between government’s bold commitments and the harsh daily realities faced by communities. More critically, we explore what concrete interventions are needed to finally shift this campaign from awareness… to genuine safety and lasting change. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station.
