Good numbers, wrong catalyst. That's the Monday verdict on the JSE. Naspers flagged core earnings growth of up to 28% and still lost ground, sitting 37% off its 52-week high. Standard Bank reported resilient five-month earnings but moderated from a 12% first-quarter pace — sell-the-news into a stock already up 8% in a fortnight. Herriot acquired three Gauteng office blocks in a related-party deal worth R129 million. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer resigned as British prime minister two years after a landslide victory, gold held above $4,200, and US-Iran talks continued. The message: in a nervous market, strong performance is necessary — but not sufficient.

In the latest Electoral Road Show with Chris Steyn and analyst Supremo Wayne Sussman, he dissects the Democratic Alliance's big Cabinet reshuffle, particularly the ministerial demotion of former party leader by the new leader Geordin Hill-Lewis, as well as the posts now allotted to the Willie Aucamp, David Maynier, Yusuf Cassim and Gauteng veteran Jack Bloom. “I think that Hill-Lewis had no choice and the DA had no choice but to move and act against Steenhuisen. Because it must have been looking at its polling and worrying about the Afrikaans voters. ...these new ministers and deputy ministers will have to show their mettle…and the DA will hope that it can arrest decline, certainly amongst Afrikaans voters, but also the voters it's been losing to the Patriotic Alliance.” Analysing the latest by-election results, Sussman describes EFF support “totally collapsing” in Buffalo City where it came close to being the second biggest party in 2024. As for Jo'burg Mayor Dada Morero first elevated and then removed as municipal intervention convenor for the province, Sussman says: “I think this says less about Dado Morero and more about the state of the ANC in Gauteng: that the infighting is vicious, that the contestation and competition is as fierce as ever, and this is not a good sign for the ANC a few months out of the Local Government Election.”
The Independent Electoral Commission's CEO Sy Mamabolo says a total of 23 706 voter registration stations will operate from 8am to 5pm this weekend. This includes 22 718 permanent stations, 960 temporary sites, and 28 mobile stations for remote areas. KwaZulu-Natal leads with 5 021 stations, followed by Eastern Cape with 4 984, Limpopo 3 317, and Gauteng 2 832. The Commission has revealed it has deployed 48 212 staff to ensure a smooth registration process ahead of the 20–21 July voter registration weekend. The Commission was ealier briefing ahead of this weekend's voter registration drive as the country gears up for the November elections. IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo ealier briefing the media had this to say.
In South Africa, informal waste pickers recover between 80% and 90% of all plastic and paper that actually gets recycled. There are about 140,000 of these reclaimers, who walk through cities and landfills, pulling trolleys and selling what they collect to make a living. Each person can keep up to 24 tons of material out of landfills every year. Together, they saved municipalities R750 million (about $45 million) in landfill costs in just one year, yet they do this work without recognition, protection, or a formal role in the waste system.Sifiso Gumbi began as a reclaimer at 19, collecting scrap metal in Soweto after school. After 15 years in the informal recycling economy, he founded Urban Surfer South Africa, a Johannesburg-based social enterprise that believes the people already doing recycling work should be supported and equipped, not replaced. Urban Surfer creates essential tools like PPE and collection trolleys with personalized number plates, helping reclaimers become recognized workers in their neighborhoods. The organization also runs four recycling hubs where reclaimers can sort and bale their materials to sell at better prices, cutting out the middlemen who used to buy their collections for much less than market value.Urban Surfer tracks everything with GPS-enabled trolleys and a live dashboard, and this approach has increased reclaimer incomes by up to 300%.Sifiso talks about why dignity is key to better recycling rates, how aluminum can prices show what gets collected and what ends up in landfills, and what it would take to expand this model across South Africa and the continent. One key idea keeps coming up in the conversation: reclaimers are like an R&D department that no one asks for advice. In South Africa, aluminum cans sell for 28 to 30 rand per kilogram, and reclaimers collect them so thoroughly that Sifiso says finding one on the street is as rare as finding a dollar bill on the sidewalk. Meanwhile, materials with lower value end up piling up in landfills, which are quickly filling up in Johannesburg and Gauteng.Companies that want their packaging recovered can learn from the people who decide every day what is worth picking up. Data is also important. Urban Surfer tracks every kilogram by material type and price at its hubs. As carbon and plastic credits become more common, reclaimers will have verified, real-time records of the work they have already done. Sifiso is honest about the challenges: four hubs are not enough for Gauteng, and there are always limits on land and equipment funding. But the bigger challenge is building trust between waste pickers and a public that still sees them as vagrants, and between the informal workforce and the policymakers and companies whose programs will only work if rebates actually reach the people doing the collecting. This conversation asks whether a truly circular economy can be built by supporting the people who are already making it happen. To learn more about Urban Surfer and to explore partnership and sponsorship opportunities that equip reclaimers with trolleys, protective gear, and recycling hub infrastructure visit urbansurfer.co.za.Subscribe to Sustainability In Your Ear on iTunesFollow Sustainability In Your Ear on Spreaker, iHeartRadio, or YouTube

And in 2024, the Patriotic Alliance burst through that wall by winning the seat off the DA.” Sussman also comments on GOOD and Rise Mzansi joining forces behind mayoral hopeful Brett Herron; the ANC's elevation of Dada Morero to intervention convener for Gauteng's troubled municipalities; the late President Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla eyeing a mayoral chain in the Eastern Cape; and Buffalo City Mayor Princess Faku coming under fire for taking officials on overseas trips to China and Germany while the municipality is struggling financially. “Next week we have two Buffalo City by-elections…It'll be interesting to see whether this issue, this debacle, hurts the ANC because both of the seats are ANC seats.”

Police in Springs have confiscated two Nile crocodiles that were allegedly being kept illegally at a residential property for more than two years. The reptiles, measuring 1.48 metres and 1.7 metres long, were discovered during a raid on Monday led by the Tshwane K9 Unit, Gauteng Department of Environment, the Vereeniging Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and the Springs SPCA. Authorities say they received information that crocodiles and tortoises were being kept on the property without the required permits. Armed with a search warrant from the Springs Magistrate’s Court, officers arrived at the home around 10am, where the owner was reportedly not present. A company manager allegedly allowed police onto the property. Inside the yard, officials found the crocodiles confined in a black steel enclosure measuring roughly 5.6 metres by 1.8 metres, with only a small blue splash pool inside. No tortoises were found during the search. The crocodiles were removed and transported to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for medical checks and further care. Police have since opened a criminal case for the alleged contravention of the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, which regulates the keeping of protected or threatened wildlife species without permits. Hermann Pretorius and Nicholas Lorimer discuss the DA's historic win in a township ward in Gauteng. They also discuss what non-racialism means in our constitution. Website · Facebook · Instagram · Twitter
In this edition of The Electoral Road Show with Chris Steyn, Elections Analyst Supremo Wayne Sussman describes how the Democratic Alliance (DA) has made history by winning its first ever township ward: “Emfuleni, Evaton is an historic ANC stronghold. And last night the DA achieved something sensational. They are able to win its first ever pure township ward, hundred percent township ward, not just in a by-election, but ever…” However, the African National Congress (ANC) did continue its “very good run” in Northwest where they had “an emphatic victory” in a Mahikeng ward, growing from 58% of the vote to 73%. These by-elections took place against the backdrop of a chilling warning from SCOPA that municipalities across the country are unviable, and the ANC NEC moving to make local government reform its singular focus. Says Sussman: “The ANC, particularly after that Gauteng result, is on the back foot now and needs to find great candidates which can connect with communities, find credible mayoral candidates which can turn the negative sentiment towards the party in Gauteng and in many other parts of the country around. This is a key, key few weeks for them.” Meanwhile, Jo'burg residents are facing more steep tariff hikes.
