This weekend in Chicago, a deeply troubling revelation came to light: the city’s Chief of Patrol reportedly issued a stand-down order to CPD units who were in route to assist federal agents embroiled in an officer-involved shooting. Any officer who obeyed this unlawful order to stand down needs to resign immediately. According to internal dispatch recordings and reports, Border Patrol agents were boxed in and under threat amid anti-ICE protests. When they radioed for backup, police were directed to “clear out … per the Chief of Patrol,” effectively abandoning a federal counterpart in peril. Some CPD units initially moved to the location but were held several blocks away and later told to pull back entirely. In the face of this dereliction, the response from rank-and-file officers and law enforcement unions was fierce. The National Fraternal Order of Police called the move a “shocking violation of duty,” arguing that when any officer — local or federal — requests help, one’s first obligation is to intervene. Meanwhile, legal experts have raised the specter of official misconduct, reckless conduct, and even liability under civil rights statutes for depriving a law enforcement officer of protection. In short: by refusing to respond, CPD leadership may have signaled that political posturing takes precedence over the core mission of protecting the public — and even protecting fellow officers. That decision, whether justified by policy or ideology, paints a grim portrait: in Chicago, loyalty to radical left political currents seems to outweigh loyalty to law enforcement itself. Why the Democrats Might Fold on the Budget Shutdown Meanwhile, in Washington, Democrats are locked in a budget showdown, betting that Republicans will cave under pressure. But the same political forces at play in Chicago—posturing over principle, fear of appearing weak, internal party fractures—may work against them. Once real consequences hit — furloughed workers, delayed services, public backlash — Democrats will struggle to hold the line. Their leverage is limited: if the shutdown drags on, they’ll be forced to negotiate or be blamed for dysfunction. Eventually, at least some will crack, bend to pragmatic necessity, and agree to a compromise short of disaster. A traffic stop is lawful if a police officer has reasonable, articulable suspicion that you are violating a traffic law or engaging in criminal activity, or if there's a warrant for your arrest, or the stop is a regulated safety inspection like a sobriety checkpoint. An unlawful stop occurs when there is no valid legal basis, such as when the officer cannot articulate specific facts to justify the stop, or the stop is based on discriminatory reasons like racial profiling.Join host Chief Virgil Green and his guest, Mark Vermylen, a TikTok influencer, whose traffic stop in Windsor has been viewed over one million times on TikTok, as they discuss what makes a traffic stop lawful or unlawful, and his experience and how he followed through with filing an official complaint against the officer.

When the US Congress enacted Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, no one expected it to become a prominent tool for confronting sexual harassment in schools. Title IX is the civil rights law that prohibits education programs from discriminating “on the basis of sex.” At the time, however, the term “sexual harassment” was not yet in use; this kind of misconduct was simply accepted as part of life for girls and women at schools and universities. In Unlawful Advances: How Feminists Transformed Title IX (Princeton UP, 2025), Celene Reynolds shows how the women claiming protection under Title IX made sexual harassment into a form of sex discrimination barred by the law. Working together, feminist students and lawyers fundamentally changed the right to equal opportunity in education and schools' obligations to ensure it. Drawing on meticulously documented case studies, Reynolds explains how Title IX was applied to sexual harassment, linking the actions of feminists at Cornell, Yale, and Berkeley. Through analyses of key lawsuits and an original dataset of federal Title IX complaints, she traces the evolution of sexual harassment policy in education—from the early applications at elite universities to the growing sexual harassment bureaucracies on campuses today—and how the work of these feminists has forever shaped the law, university governance, and gender relations on campus. Reynolds argues that our political and interpretive struggle over this application of Title IX is far from finished. Her account illuminates this ongoing effort, as well as the more general process by which citizens can transform not only the laws that govern us, but also the very meaning of equality under American law. Trump is in collapse, his psyche fracturing, his infrastructure mirroring his breakdown, his institutions weaponized around his rage. The rupture is real, and it's here, now. There will be no more subtle signals. It's confrontation or collapse. Rage against the dying of the light that they are trying to force upon us.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On today's show we are asking questions about property rights. Our team has been working on a development site in Utah. The property in question has a broad commercial zoning associated with it. The purpose of zoning is to restrict land use to specific uses that are in line with the city's master plan. The intent is to ensure that developments of those properties is not in conflict with the stated goals of the city. At this point we have presented three different site plans to the city that are consistent with the zoning. All were supported by the planning commission. The most recent site plan proposal was approved by the planning commission with a vote of 7-0. But then when it got to city council, it was denied. Unlike in some other municipalities, this city has delegated the final decision-making authority to the Planning Commission for certain types of applications, including:Conditional Use PermitsCommercial site plansThis means that for these specific applications, the Planning Commission's decision is final and does not require further approval from the City Council, unless it is appealed.Since our property is zoned commercial, it is unclear that City council should have even played a role in the application according to the city's own rules. So the question eventually becomes one of property rights. At what point does the denial of construction on a property effectively become a condemnation of the property, without just compensation. We are truly starting to ask questions about the legitimacy of the repeated denials. Clearly these are risks that a developer takes. But my gosh this feels a bit extreme. On today's show we are going to take a look at the case law surrounding excessive government interference. Now of course I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on a podcast. As you can see, we're a little frustrated with the city council and it's looking like consulting a very experienced land use attorney might be the next step. ----------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
