Welcome back Lore Lovers! Today Laura and Lorin discuss their approaches to writing, things that work for them, and tips and tricks they've picked up along the way. This episode is mainly meant for those considering starting out with writing, or are early in their writing journey. Writing is a craft that takes many, many years to develop, and can at times be daunting. There are tons of resources available to learn, and Lorin advises to put aside time whenever possible to devote to learning. YouTube has tons of free channels, Brandon Sanderson has all of his BYU lectures there. Additionally his podcast Writing Excuses comes highly recommended. Facebook writers groups can be a great place for support when you need it. Laura recommends the Save the Cat book for screenwriting by Blake Snyder, and Lorin recommends the Fabula deck of cards, which is built around the Hero's Journey approach to plotting a story. Reading Now: Lorin is currently just finishing Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and is just about to start The Fate of the Sprectrums, a new SciFi novel by Nicholas Lawrence Carter on Oct 26th, available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. Laura is re-reading A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas (because when is it not a good time to re-read that series??) and is just about to start The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by. V.E. Schwartz. Join us weekly for bookish, animation, or other nerdy entertainment talks and author shout-outs. Follow us on IG: @lauralhoman and @lorinpetrazilka. Welcome back Lore Lovers! Today we talk about some fantasy movies that we love, and gave each other recommendations for something new to watch. Laura watched Terry Gilliam's Adventures of Baron Munchausen. It is all things wonderful and preposterous, complete with the disembodied, omnipotent floating head Robin Williams cameo. While the movie has a lot of ridiculous fantasy elements, it is also an allegory for the need to escape the realities of war. Lorin watched Jupiter Ascending, while this film was not very well received on Rotten Tomatoes, there were definitely parts to love when not overwhelmed by the barrage of VFX explosions. A shirtless dogman splice Channing Tatum rollerblading his way through the movie on magboots whilst continually rescuing a frequently falling Jupiter Jones was definitely a highlight-and also perhaps a good drinking game. Stunning visuals from the high budget were definitely appreciated, as well as the disturbing yet nonetheless thought provoking idea that humans populate many planets for the sole reason of harvesting them for a valuable youth serum. Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of villain Balem Abrasax was inspired at a Nick Cage level of ferocity. To wrap up we recommended a few more movies, Labyrinth (because when do we not need David Bowie in our lives?) and several fantasy series from the Hallmark Channel, the 10th Kingdom and Arabian Nights.
