The frontrunner for US Ambassador to South Africa says yesterday's anti-US article in Foreign Policy deserves a strong response: targeted financial sanctions against its author Cyril Ramaphosa and wealthy ANC cadres. Johannesburg-born Joel Pollak, the senior editor at Breitbart, says publicly exposing the international financial assets of billionaire Ramaphosa and politically connected cadres including those who benefitted from State Capture, will likely make US president Donald Trump a hero among the people of SA. He anticipates something similar to the overwhelmingly positive public response in America to exposures from Elon Musk's DOGE project. Pollak spoke to BizNews founder Alec Hogg.

Joel Pollak, probably the next US ambassador to South Africa, tells Peter Bruce in this revealing edition of Podcasts from the Edge, that President Cyril Ramaphosa and his senior officials got it hopelessly wrong when they responded to US President Donald Trump's attacks on South Africa with personal criticism of him. ”When Trump commented on South Africa,” says Pollak, “you don't accuse him of misinformation. People in the media can do what they want but the President of South Africa and senior officials and so forth — you just don't accuse Trump of misinformation and you don't say he was acting irrationally. That's exactly the wrong thing to do. You try to understand where he's coming from, you offer compromises and you get to a better place … But it was absolutely necessary for him to behave that way.”

We are very grateful for his unwavering commitment.”Five of the top six public dealership groups experienced slight declines in F&I gross profits per vehicle in Q3 2024. Group 1 Automotive was the exception, posting a modest 1% gain year over year, aided by stronger penetration rates for service contracts and new vehicle financing.AutoNation saw the sharpest decline, with F&I profits falling 6% to $2,589 per vehicle.Lithia Motors faced a 2.8% decline due to lower sales of service contracts. In our last conversation with Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett [Where emotions come from (and why it matters) Part 1] a couple of weeks ago we looked at her theory of where emotions originate. On today's show, Calvin and Alex analyze the rhetoric and politics of the 2024 presidential election in terms of a particularly significant job this cycle: the vice president, or veep! We begin by discussing Vice President Kamala Harris's meteoric rise to the Democratic nomination following President Biden's departure from the race, as well as Harris's conspicuous similarities to HBO's fictional Veep, Selena Meyer (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). We then compare and contrast the aesthetics, rhetorical styles, and political stances of Harris's vice presidential nominee and Minnesota governor Tim Walz, and Republican veep nominee and Donald Trump's running mate J.D. Vance. Along the way, we discuss how the Democratic Party under Harris and Walz is embracing a rhetoric of normalcy vs. “weirdness” that is genuinely novel and effective as a strategy for delegitimizing GOP policy, and how this approach may help to expand the Democratic voting base in response to state-level crises over reproductive justice and public education.
