War and Trauma US Army In Kuwait, Before The Invasion of Iraq. In the early morning darkness of March 23, 2003, just three days after the official start of the Iraq War, a shocking act of violence erupted, not from an outside enemy, but from within the ranks of the U.S. Army. It was an act that forever changed Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) Bart Womack’s life, and would later become the central focus of his gripping book, Embedded Enemy. Stationed at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait, the Headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division was making final preparations for the invasion of Iraq. But that night, as soldiers tried to rest before crossing the border, an explosion shattered the calm. A grenade was tossed into a tent. Seconds later, gunfire rang out. Smoke, confusion, and panic followed. We’re under attack.’” The attacker? A fellow American soldier, one of their own, who had sworn the same oath to defend the Constitution. Two officers were killed. Fourteen others were wounded, six of whom were evacuated and never returned. The emotional and psychological trauma from that night continues to haunt many of the survivors. After 29 years of service in the U.S. Army, including assignments as a Drill Sergeant, Ranger Instructor, and Sergeant of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, he has turned his focus to serving veterans in new ways. Now a resident of Pittsburgh, Womack holds a B.S. in Business Management from Park University and an MBA from Waynesburg University. He serves as the Program Manager for Onward to Opportunity, Pittsburgh, a Syracuse University initiative that equips transitioning service members and veterans with career training and support. It’s a story not just of violence and betrayal, but of resilience, leadership, and the unbreakable bonds forged in war. Arsenal had another frustrating 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Emirates. Coming off the high of their midweek Champions League triumph over Real Madrid, Mikel Arteta's men struggled to replicate that intensity, albeit heavily rotated squad.The first half was an acceptable affair, but Arsenal unable to break down Brentford's organized defense. Kieran Tierney thought he had opened the scoring, but was  offside. The Gunners looked sharper after halftime, and Thomas Partey broke the deadlock in the 61st minute finishing off a swift counterattack orchestrated by Declan Rice, who continued his excellent form.However, Brentford responded just 13 minutes later; capitalized on a defensive lapse, hooking in an equalizer that stole our joy. Despite late pressure from Arsenal, including a near-miss from Bukayo Saka and a deflected cross from Gabriel Martinelli, we couldn't find a winner.Arteta's decision to rest key players like Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard initially seemed justified rightfully so. Even after introducing his stars in the second half, the Gunners couldn't regain control. This game was a lot of individual brilliance, team resilience and a lot of endurance with 10 men. Emirates was filled with joy as Arsenal edged Fulham 2-1. A game that showed the Arsenal players filled with confidence, resilience. Bukayo Saka's long-awaited return was the headline story, and what a way to mark it—with a decisive goal just minutes after stepping onto the pitch. Add to that Mikel Merino's continued brilliance, and you have a performance that left fans buzzing.This wasn't an easy ride, though. Arsenal started strong, controlling possession and creating chances, but injuries and defensive lapses kept things tense. Gabriel Magalhães' early departure with a hamstring issue was a blow, and Fulham's late goal reminded us of the defensive frailties and how much luck made our evening good in winning spirits. Yet, the Gunners showed grit and determination to secure three vital points.Saka's goal was a fairytale moment, made possible by Gabriel Martinelli's audacious flick—a play that will be replayed a lot. Meanwhile, Merino's opener highlighted his adaptability and importance to this side. Reframing Mindset: A Conversation with David HigdonHave you ever noticed how most conversations about mindset feel suspiciously like Saturday Night Live's Stuart Smalley sketch—staring into the mirror, repeating, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough..."? If affirmations were a magic wand, we'd all be living our dream lives already, right?Mindset matters, but not how most mindset coaches sell it. In a recent Creative On Purpose Live episode, David Higdon (David Higdon) joined me to poke gently at prevailing myths about mindset and affirmations. Spoiler alert: Mindset follows posture, not the other way around.Mindset as Interaction, Not Just ThinkingFor David, mindset isn't merely thinking differently—it's about interacting with reality differently. You don't become confident by declaring yourself confident; you build confidence by acknowledging where you are and taking micro-steps toward becoming who you want to be. Affirmations only stick when they're rooted in your current reality. "I am becoming confident" beats "I am confident" if confidence isn't yet your lived experience.Mindset Follows PostureI love how David aligns with my assertion—mindset follows posture. Your attitudes and actions shape your mindset more than your mindset shapes your attitudes and actions. This means doing the thing comes before being the thing. Want to become a better writer, coach, or human? Start acting like one.Mirror, Mirror…David shared a pivotal realization that reframed his entire approach to mindset. During a drive home from a band rehearsal in Jersey, he saw the New York City skyline and asked himself, "Why am I like this?" He collided with reality. By honestly identifying behaviors that held him back, David began removing the friction that stood between who he was and who he wanted to be.He calls this practice "looking in the mirror." It starts by acknowledging your part in situations that don't go your way. Instead of blaming the outside world—look inward. David calls this 'giving grace.' It doesn't mean accepting or ignoring your faults. It means forgiving your past self, appreciating the present you, and gently embracing the potential future you.Compassion and ResponsibilityEmpathy for others starts with empathy for yourself. David shared how learning to offer grace to himself made it easier to extend it to others, creating a virtuous cycle of compassion and accountability. But grace alone isn't enough; tough love has its place. Sometimes the greatest gift you can offer yourself is holding yourself accountable to a higher standard.Notice, Name, NavigateAs you know, my three-step framework is Notice, Name, Navigate. Notice what's happening as objectively as possible. Name the choices available. Navigate by doing the next right thing. David's similar approach starts with identifying impulses or triggers, noticing emotional responses, and choosing new ways to respond. Simple, but not easy. It's a practice—a habit.Victim, Persecutor, SaviorWe also explored Karpman's Drama Triangle. If you identify as a victim, you invite persecutors and saviors into your life. Conversely, by removing victimhood, you also remove the roles of persecutors and saviors. David suggested an intriguing possibility: once you've let go of the victim role, you might unconsciously step into the persecutor or savior roles instead. That's a danger worth noticing.Gratitude as a SuperpowerGratitude changes minds faster than affirmations. It's a scientifically proven superpower. Real gratitude means appreciating the challenges life hands you, not just the abundance. It's the secret sauce of becoming a better person and a better solopreneur.Final ThoughtMindset isn't something you “fix.” It's something you build, day by day, through conscious choices and intentional actions. The truth is, your mind doesn't need setting; it needs recalibrating through experience. So, start small, act intentionally, and trust the process.
