Hey y'all,January-March is in many ways a little bit of a nebulous time of year. Summer Blockbusters haven't started, it isn't Holiday Movie season, and many of your serious award contenders have yet to come out. So what are we supposed to talk about? The same thing we did last year: Black History and Excellence my dudes. Throughout history, but even in the last year alone, there have been incredible, powerful, transcendent pieces of art that shaped generations of artists and cinema lovers. So all month long, we're celebrating. To begin, we're reviewing 2022's The Woman King. The film is based on a true story and was considered an awards favorite. We'll discuss how well it handles that history, whether it was a true contender or an Award Bait flick, and more. Beyond our review, we'll also be discussing the new changes at Netflix, as well as James Gunn's big DC Studios announcement. And of course, be sure to check out last week's episode. Thank y'all,The Buds
The holidays might be over, but we're not finished talking about holiday movies. (I mean, really, are we ever?) More than 200 new holiday movies aired on Hallmark, Lifetime, Netflix, and dozens of other channels and streaming services between October and December. Hallmark made more progress in the direction of diversity and also (maybe? kind of?) had some new competition this year. And Netflix didn't premiere a single new movie starring Vanessa Hudgens. Let's discuss. Anna Rendell, my best friend and best friend of the show, is here to break down the season with me, from viewership numbers to our top 10 faves. Or at least 10-ish movies that at least one of us think belongs in the top 10. (Come for the list-making; stay for the debate over a movie Anna and I drastically disagree on!) Of course, because this is The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are always welcome, we also discuss doing our nails, getting our hair cut, and spoilers (hello, HI, there will be spoilers in this episode). If you love holiday movies like we love holiday movies, this is the episode you've been waiting for. Let's get started! MENTIONED IN THE SHOW: Hallmark vs. Great American Family: Who's Winning the Holiday Movie War? This week we're dissecting two different holiday movies, A Christmas Prince and About Fate, and ruminating on our very different reactions to them. The Hallmark Channel Xmas Romance Season has branched out (heh heh) into Hanukkah, and Maya and Rebecca watched Hanukkah on Rye SO YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO. As newbies to the genre, we ask–what the hell is going on here? And what happens when Jews get integrated into these narratives?

It's time to pass through the seven levels of the candy cane forest, through the sea of swirly-twirly gum drops, and then through the Lincoln Tunnel! This year's series of holiday-themed movies concludes with a body-switch comedy from 1988 starring Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage as a father and son who - you guessed it - switch bodies as a result of a mishap with an ancient artifact. What results are hijinks involving middle school bullies, board meetings, heavy metal concerts, motorcycle chases, department stores, etc.....and this all takes place around Chicago during Christmastime. Of course while father and son adapt to their circumstances, they get to know each other better and hilarity ensues. ;) Brian Gilbert directed and this film also co-stars Swoosie Kurtz, Jane Kaczmarek, and David Proval. This came out amidst a slew of other body-switching comedies released within a few months including Like Father Like Son, 18 Again, and Big....and it's actually one of the better ones!Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
