(Spoiler Section Length - 6min 20sec)It's time to go back to the past of Makoto Shinkai - the creator of Your Name - to see the man's directorial debut. Except... we're actually checking out two films, one a short film and the other a full-length one. What similarites lie between these two works, and how do they relate to his later films? And more importantly... how do they hold up?

To close out the Shinkaideology we've taken the chance to reshare the interview we had with Makoto Shinkai almost two years ago. Some may have already have heard this, but we've had lots of new listeners join the show, so wanted to take the chance to get his voice on the feed for the end of the mini-series.As his new blockbuster anime Suzume is released in UK cinemas, director Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering With You) speaks with Michael and Jake about turning a romantic lead into a three-legged chair, falling in love with Whisper of the Heart, being touted as 'the next Miyazaki', and his filmmaking career to date.Join us on Patreon for ad-free and bonus episodes, Discord access and show footnotes and more: Patreon.com/ghibliothequeEmail us: ghibliotheque@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter @ghibliotheque and Instagram @ghibliotheque.pod.@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – Jake@_stephwatts - Steph Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This week, Michael and Jake bring the Shinkai-deology up to date with Makoto Shinkai's latest release, and the third film in his loose trilogy of high-concept, disaster-themed features: Suzume. However, this time, Shinkai makes the connection with the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake more overt than ever, with a young girl and her chair boyfriend travelling the full length of Japan to close a series of mystical doors, and heal the long-standing trauma of a nation.Subscribe to our Patreon for ad-free episodes and bonus conversations in our Library Cafe series.Follow us on Twitter or Instagram, or drop us an email at ghibliotheque@gmail.com. Wiz HIGHLY RECOMMENDS Suzume I try to make sure not to curse in my reviews: it's just kind of lame and it never really gets the point across most times. But I have to do it with this movie because it's the only way to emphasize my points succinctly enough: From animation to visuals to the emotional story, Suzume is fucking beautiful. The film starts as a fun action adventure road trip film with a cute, lovable main character and a sidekick who is a chair. It's filled with humor, heart and just a fun and sweet story. Then, the second half rolls around and it becomes an emotionally poignant film about loss and grief. The tone at first seems incredibly abrupt, but it makes up for it at the end with a powerfully done ending that had me more than emotional towards the end. But the other obvious thing to talk about is the visuals: they are simply stunning. Whether it's the animation of the characters and their faces to the colors of the sky, ground and grass, Suzume is a visual knockout of a film. And RADWIMPS is back with yet another great song to pair with the film, like they did in Your Name. Suzume may just be the film that will have non-anime fans really remembering the name Makoto Shinkai like they do with Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon, thanks to it's breathtaking visuals and effective storytelling. It has all the heart of some of the best Ghibli films with Shinkai's incredible animation and music selection. This film deserves to be mentioned amongst Spirited Away, Paprika and Grave of the Fireflies as some of Japan's best films in the past 50 years. Yes...it's that good.

The Shinkai-deology continues with Makoto Shinkai returning to shortform storytelling with the gorgeously-photographed, Tokyo-set drama, The Garden of Words. The gang finally completes the Makoto Shinkai trilogy, closing the book on our previous discussions on Your Name (Episode 7) and Weathering With You (Episode 12) after many years with 2022's Suzume. There's a lot to like about this movie (it's just as beautiful as its predecessors, if not even more gorgeous) but it's definitely not as good as Your Name and arguably may not even be better than Weathering With You, which does lend itself to a pretty great discussion about the main characters, the keystones (how do they work?!?), and the weird way the "romance" develops as the movie goes on. And in its small moments there's a wonderful story about the kindness of strangers Suzume meets on her journey, and it does elicit the emotions we're used to feeling in a Shinkai film. I wonder if you had any insights on the influence of animé on the transgender community. I previously told you about my lifelong gender dysphoria. I had it under control for many years, but after years in a toxic relationship with a psychopath, which destroyed my sense of self and a serendipitous recommendation from my daughter to watch the animé movie Kimi No Nawa (Your Name), which features body/gender swapping between the main characters Taki and Mitsuha, I had a serious mental breakdown which triggered my gender transition at age 64. The director. Makoto Shinkai was deeply influenced by the manga Inside Mari, which also featured a gender swapping plot. I happened to later listen to a podcast by Sasha Ayad, who specializes in treating gender dysphoria in teens. She mentions in the podcast that some of her patients were influenced by watching animé. I had never heard of that connection nor is my viewing of animé broad enough to know of any other instances of gender swapping/bending in the genre. Do you know of other such animé? What is your opinion about the influence of animé on the transgender community?" Well Mrs. Anonymous thanks for the donation and topic. That podcast you sent me I put in the description. It's between two female psychologists that discuss their clients that are transgendered and what made them that way. I also put a conversation with Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan as the not so mystery link. In both interviews they discuss Dr. Ray Blanchard a doctor in Toronto that mapped out characteristics of trans people in the 80s and 90s. He pointed out that there were two types of transexuals. The ones that were homosexual and the other group that were autogynephilics. Peterson says that only after 30 to 40 years later did Blanchard's research become controversial. He was cancelled for his life work trying to understand trans people. As for the podcast you sent me the two women in it did say that many of their clients triggered gender dysphoria because they watched things like sissy hypno. Even the transmaxxing manifesto suggests that gender dysphoria can be induced by watching sissy hypno content on adult websites. If you have to ask what that is then it's not for you. So Mrs. Anonymous it looks like the film Kimi no Na wa, an 2016 Japanese animated film where a teenage boy and teenage girl in high school swap bodies finally set you off and you transitioned. It was a huge hit and made 380 million dollars worldwide. I think that to understand if certain types of anime can induce gender dysphoria we have to look at the different types of trans people and what gets each group to transition. The ones that are autogynopheliacs are probably the easiest to understand because they get turned on by putting on women's clothing. The second group 80% are gay and usually incredibly feminine and girlish as boys. They typically have high voices and female friends circle. 20% of that second group are not gay and the two female psychologists just call them weird. They also identify a 4th category and say they are scared soft and gentle. Mrs. anonymous you're probably in group 3 or 4. They claim that those groups tend to have men that are bright and a little autistic. That's what Kat the Vat, the content creator with the main transmaxxing channel out there pointed out that incels which tend to be on the autistic side are more likely to question their sexuality. I'll discuss more in a moment but let me first tell everyone about today's sponsor Profit Specialist Group:Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mgtow/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Suzume (Japanese: すずめの戸締まり, Hepburn: Suzume no Tojimari, lit. 'Suzume's Locking Up') is a 2022 Japanese animated coming-of-age fantasy adventure film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films, and distributed by Toho. The film follows 17-year-old high school girl Suzume Iwato and young stranger Souta Munakata, who team up to prevent a series of disasters across Japan by sealing doors from the colossal, supernatural worm that causes earthquakes after being released. The film features the voices of Nanoka Hara and Hokuto Matsumura, with the character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka, animation direction by Kenichi Tsuchiya, art direction by Takumi Tanji, and music by Radwimps and Kazuma Jinnouchi, making it Shinkai's third collaboration with Radwimps and Tanaka, after Your Name (2016) and Weathering with You (2019). It began production in early 2020, eventually being announced as completed by October 2022. A novel adaptation, also written by Shinkai, and a manga series illustrated by Denki Amashima both debuted prior to the film's release. It was inspired by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Suzume first premiered in IMAX in Japan on November 7, 2022, and was theatrically released nationwide on November 11. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, characters, emotional weight and music, although the film's plot was criticized by some for being structurally similar to Shinkai's previous works. It has grossed over $323 million worldwide, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2022 in Japan and the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time. The film received multiple nominations, including at the Golden Globe Awards and Saturn Awards.

While full of the stunning visual style that we love about Makoto Shinkai's work, the director's attempt at blending Miyazaki-like fantasy and his typical themes of young romance and time travel don't quite coalesce. We appreciate the exploration of national grief over natural disasters and enjoy elements of the road trip journey Suzume goes on, but as a whole this left us wanting more and not wowed as we have been with many of his previous films.* Note - full spoilers in effect for entire episode *Follow & SubscribeAaronTwitterFacebookLetterboxdPatrickTwitterAn Original Series Podcast TwitterFeelin' FilmFacebookTwitterWebsiteLetterboxdYouTubeEmail feelinfilm@gmail.comFeelin' Film on Apple PodcastsFeelin' Film on SpotifyFeelin' Film on RepodFeelin' Film on StitcherFeelin' Film on PodchaserNow Playing NetworkJoin the Facebook Discussion GroupJoin the DiscordRate/Review us on iTunes and on your podcast app of choice!
