A few months ago, I was chatting with my sister and out of nowhere she asked me if I had done a Valley Girl podcast yet. She loves this movie and it has come up a few times over the years. I responded that I hadn't gotten to it yet and that I would get to it soon. I had actually tried to record it many years ago, in my first year or so of podcast, but I don't think I handled it well, and never released it. I felt a little guilty and so I decided that I needed to get a Valley Girl episode into the feed. I start the show talking about what it was like not having agency in what videos were rented in your house. Being the youngest, I was a little resentful at the time, but now I realize how much richer my life is because of all the movies I was exposed to that I never would have chosen. One of those is Valley Girl, which my sister rented for herself, but I was never one to shy away from new entertainment and I watched it as well multiple times. After I finished telling my story I move onto the film itself. I discuss how a Zappa song turned into a lawsuit that didn't derail a film that has often been described as Vall-sploitation. Other films in this genre were released, but non were as well-made and well-acted as this one. Then I talk about production, the case, the music, the reception, and much more. I am not sure why Valley Girl isn't more popular. Maybe its because its a little rough around the edges, but I find that charming. It, and movies lie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, helped to establish tropes that other 80s films would borrow, and it deserves to be watched and celebrated.

Did you think Script Apart was going to let the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic teen films ever just pass us by? In the words of Cher Horowitz – “as if.” On today's episode, we're joined by Amy Heckerling, the writer-director who, three decades ago this summer, gave Jane Austen's Emma a Beverly Hills makeover to remember. You may also know her for Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who's Talking and Vamps, but Clueless is the film that she's best-known for – a Nineties treasure trove of high school hilarity that's still beloved today. So much so that a musical adaptation, also written by Amy, just opened in London's West End. In the conversation you're about to hear, Amy tells Al about the spirit of kindness that runs through the movie. We get into the TV pilot for Clueless – then titled No Worries – that was turned down across Hollywood, and discuss what was going on in Amy's life at the time of writing Clueless. The story of the film is one of a sunny optimist named Cher who's ready to take on the world. For Amy, though, that was hardly the case as she wrote the hit comedy. “I was feeling very depressed, which is how most stories start,” she teased in an interview in 2016. In this episode, she tells us why. Support for this episode comes from Final Draft.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. In this episode, Anna and Derek discuss lightning in a bottle casting, anti-John Hughes depictions of teen life, and much more during their chat of the seminal flick Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982).Connect with '80s Movie Montage on Facebook, Bluesky or Instagram! It's the same handle for all three... @80smontagepod.Anna Keizer and Derek Dehanke are the co-hosts of ‘80s Movie Montage. The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover. We'd love to hear from you! Send us a text message.
We present our Hardbodies/10/Spring Break Review! When people think of iconic American cinema, they rarely jump straight to beachside hijinks, topless party montages, and clueless middle-aged men trying to reclaim their youth—but perhaps they should. Films like 10 (1979), Hardbodies (1984), and Spring Break (1983) are part of a uniquely 1980s phenomenon: the sex comedy boom, where the combination of sun, skin, and slapstick served as both low-budget goldmines and cultural time capsules. Though 10, starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, predates the others and leaned more into adult romantic fantasy than outright teen farce, it planted the seeds for the genre's obsession with unattainable beauty, aging masculinity, and self-aware hedonism. But it was Hardbodies that truly shifted the tone, ushering in the rise of the raunchy, youth-driven beach comedy that would define a generation of VHS rentals and late-night cable rewatches.Hardbodies wasn't the first to feature babes and bros on the sand, but it was the blueprint that codified the formula: old dudes hire a young ladies' man to teach them how to pick up women in Malibu, resulting in a series of increasingly absurd, sexualized, and tone-deaf adventures. It's pure wish fulfillment, soaked in neon tans and synth-heavy soundtracks, but it also became the prototype for films like Spring Break, Private Resort, and Hot Dog… The Movie. Its unapologetic objectification and throwaway plotting weren't accidental—they were the selling point. And for better or worse, Hardbodies helped shift sex comedy from teen coming-of-age (Porky's, Fast Times) to pure, exploitative fantasy. That shift matters, because it marked the moment when these films stopped pretending to be about growing up and started reveling in never growing up at all. The film legacy of Hardbodies isn't about quality or prestige—it's about influence, formula, and the way it captured a certain type of American escapism that filmmakers are still riffing on (or reacting against) today.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
You know the accent. You’ve heard it exaggerated in The Californians on SNL, slurred by Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and sung by Moon Unit Zappa in the most famous monologue in the San Fernando Valley. The California accent has been parodied in the media for decades. California is the largest state by population, making it one of the most diverse in the nation. So, is there truly an accent that unites all its residents? Today on AirTalk, we are talking about the California accent. Has living in California impacted your accent? Give us a call 866-893-5722 or email atcomments@laist.com. Joining us to discuss is Norma Mendoza-Denton, professor of anthropology at UCLA and creator of the Los Angeles Speaks project. Professor Mendoza-Denton is seeking participants who grew up & currently live in all parts of Los Angeles County to help with the study. Participants must be over 18 and speak English as a dominant language (began learning before age 8 or at 3rd grade). Researchers will come to your neighborhood and interview you for 60-90 minutes about living in LA. You may be asked to complete a brief mapping task. To ask questions or volunteer to participate please call the dedicated number for this project (805) 826-3568 or email losangeles.speaks@gmail.com. Learn more about the project here. Guest:

In this special episode, we take a nostalgic look back at the early recordings that sparked our popular movie review format. January 3-9, 1998 After 10 years Ken welcomes return guest, and certified Hunk, author of the book "Have I Seen You in Anything?", Matt Knudesen. Ken and Matt discuss living the dream, how great we still look, Sears Craftsman Tool Chests, art supplies, growing up in Iowa, RIP K-Mart, North Dakota, finishing high school in So-Cal, cheap motels, the wonder of cable TV while traveling, Nickelodeon, You Can't Do That on Television, Stacey Keach, taking out a loan to get your first apartment, acting, Kevin Costner's post-appocalytpic obession, TV Guide in the movies, confusing Star Trek and Star Wars, Joe's Apartment, getting the Jerry O'Connell upgrade, Richard Belzer's WWF lawsuit, seeing Stevie Wonder live, The Family Channel JAMS, Bosom Buddies, debates about nerdy minutia, how sometimes stories just should end, the Animal that is Cosby, experiencing a lion in person, Y2K, Man or Astroman?, go bags, House II: The Second Story, old character actors, Royal Dano, Fast Times, Paul Dooley, Breaking Away the TV Series, US remakes of UK shows, streaming, how even huge stars can't get movies into theaters, Starting Over, Burt Reynolds, location shooting, being in commercials, stunt driving, Kurt Fuller, the actor to real estate agent track, how Ken feels Seinfeld doesn't hold up, massive executive mistakes, Woman of the People, watching yourself in something and realizing the project is awful, Mike Hammer, Mickey Spillane, Cloris Leachman, not knowing if you can do something but claiming you can anyway, cheating at Celebrity Jeopardy, laughing Gary Owens bobbleheads, and how Santa Claus as a music critic is a total jerk.
Feeling old yet, Slackers? When we were young, there were so many movie stars—and not just the Brat Pack. Sean Penn, Kiefer Sutherland, and Elisabeth Shue come to mind. Fast forward to today, and these former young heartthrobs and beloved teen idols have become Hollywood royalty, winning some of the industry's most prestigious awards, including Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Emmys, and Tonys. Movies like TAPS and Fast Times at Ridgemont High boast numerous award winners, including multiple Oscar wins. While Sean Penn received recognition fairly early in his career, actors like Christian Slater and Jennifer Jason Leigh didn't receive any significant award buzz until 30+ years into their careers. Though I'm an avowed Ferris Bueller hater, it was still pretty cool to see Alan Ruck (Cameron) receive nominations for his role on Succession.Although I don't typically pay much attention to award shows, I'm rooting for Demi Moore to finally win the big one for her role in The Substance. We dive into how these stars have evolved—not just in their careers, but in their artistry—transforming from iconic teen roles into multi-award-winning performances. We explore their journeys from being the faces of an era to becoming respected actors and performers across different genres. It's fascinating to see these once-young stars redefine what it means to age gracefully in Hollywood while staying relevant, admired, and celebrated.
It's Valentine's Day weekend and we wanted to keep with the theme and talk about some of the crushes we had in the 80s & 90s. In this episode we're joined by Swiss swimming sensation and butterfly specialist Noe Ponti. Noe just completed a short course season for the ages where he pummeled the 50m Butterfly World Record throughout the World Cup en route to the World Title and he also took down the record that meant the most to him - Caeleb Dressel's 100m Butterfly World Record. This season is just what Noe needed to call 2024 a success, after 4th and 5th place finishes in Paris denied him medals at back to back Olympics. In this chat, Noe takes us behind the scenes of his swimming career from his start as a natural butterflier, to the details of his training regimen, which includes very little sprinting despite Noe now being the fastest 50 butterflier in history.

Today, we're cruising back to the 1980s with a deep dive into Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a seminal teen comedy that has left an indelible mark on the genre. Directed by Amy Heckerling and released in 1982, this film not only launched several careers but also captured the quintessential teen experience with humor, honesty, and a bit of rebellion.Based on Cameron Crowe's book, which he wrote after going undercover at a San Diego high school, Fast Times at Ridgemont High presents a slice-of-life look at the trials and tribulations of teenage life. The film explores the lives of several students including the iconic Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn), a perpetually stoned surfer, the ambitious Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and her older brother, Brad (Judge Reinhold), as they navigate the complexities of adolescence. From dating disasters to job frustrations, the film covers a wide range of teen experiences. Stacy's explorations of love and relationships, Spicoli's clashes with the strict Mr. Hand (Ray Walston), and Brad's journey toward independence paint a vivid picture of the ups and downs of teenage life. The narrative is episodic, shifting focus among characters and their individual stories, which are both humorous and poignant. Why It Stands OutAuthentic Dialogue and Situations: The film shines in its depiction of teenage dialogue and situations, feeling both authentic and relatable. Sean Penn is a powerhouse film performer capable of intensely moving work, who has gone from strength to strength during a colorful film career, and who has drawn much media attention for his stormy private life and political viewpoints. Sean Justin Penn was born in Los Angeles, California, the second son of actress Eileen Ryan (née Annucci) and director, actor, and writer Leo Penn. His brother was actor Chris Penn. His father was from a Lithuanian Jewish/Russian Jewish family, and his mother is of half-Italian and half Irish descent. Penn first appeared in roles as strong-headed or unruly youths such as the military cadet defending his academy against closure in Taps (1981), then as fast-talking surfer stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Fans and critics were enthused about his obvious talent and he next contributed a stellar performance alongside Timothy Hutton in the Cold War spy thriller The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), followed by a teaming with icy Christopher Walken in the chilling At Close Range (1986). The youthful Sean then paired up with his then wife, pop diva Madonna in the woeful, and painful, Shanghai Surprise (1986), which was savaged by the critics, but Sean bounced back with a great job as a hot-headed young cop in Colors (1988), gave another searing performance as a US soldier in Vietnam committing atrocities in Casualties of War (1989) and appeared alongside Robert De Niro in the uneven comedy We're No Angels (1989). However, the 1990s was the decade in which Sean really got noticed by critics as a mature, versatile and accomplished actor, with a string of dynamic performances in first-class films. Almost unrecognisable with frizzy hair and thin rimmed glasses, Penn was simply brilliant as corrupt lawyer David Kleinfeld in the Brian De Palma gangster movie Carlito's Way (1993) and he was still in trouble with authority as a Death Row inmate pleading with a caring nun to save his life in Dead Man Walking (1995), for which he received his first Oscar nomination. Sean then played the brother of wealthy Michael Douglas, involving him in a mind-snapping scheme in The Game (1997) and also landed the lead role of Sgt. Eddie Walsh in the star-studded anti-war film The Thin Red Line (1998), before finishing the 1990s playing an offbeat jazz musician (and scoring another Oscar nomination) in Sweet and Lowdown (1999). The gifted and versatile Sean had also moved into directing, with the quirky but interesting The Indian Runner (1991), about two brothers with vastly opposing views on life, and in 1995 he directed Jack Nicholson in The Crossing Guard (1995). Both films received overall positive reviews from critics. Moving into the new century, Sean remained busy in front of the cameras with even more outstanding work: a mentally disabled father fighting for custody of his seven-year-old daughter (and receiving a third Oscar nomination) for I Am Sam (2001); an anguished father seeking revenge for his daughter's murder in the gut-wrenching Clint Eastwood-directed Mystic River (2003) (for which he won the Oscar as Best Actor); a mortally ill college professor in 21 Grams (2003) and a possessed businessman in The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004). Alright, folks, buckle up! Today's podcast episode is brought to you by the one, the only, Hawk—who, let's be honest, may need an intervention for his microphone. It's loose again, people. If this podcast had a production budget, that mic would have gone the way of Trump's dietitian—a distant memory! After struggling to find a topic that wasn't dark or depressing, Hawk did the sensible thing: he outsourced his job to the internet. Why spend time planning your show when you can let TikTok and Patreon comments drive your content? The man's living the dream, folks! And what did his highly intellectual audience request? The riveting tale of how Hawk adopted Tanner, a Chihuahua-dachshund who picked him like a desperate kid picking his parents at a divorce hearing. Some woman who looked like she wandered off Real Housewives of Beverly Hills tried to snatch Tanner away, but the dog sprinted into Hawk's lap. That's right—straight-up rejected reality TV for a life of podcasting mediocrity. Enter Lola, another dog from the same shelter because clearly, Hawk's building a rescue dog cinematic universe here. But hold on, Hawk veered into weather reports that make CNN look calm. And, as any responsible adult would, he followed up storm devastation with tales of totaling cars as a teenager. You know, like a public service announcement but with more vehicular damage. Kids, don't fall asleep at the wheel, or worse—you'll end up paddled by your Mormon vice principal. Just trust me, Hawk's high school life was like a bad crossover between Fast & Furious and Fast Times at Ridgemont High… except with fewer cool stunts and more cringe-worthy life lessons.
