In this episode, I reflect on a beautiful and haunting quote by Chief Crowfoot that I've come across many times — a poetic description of life as a firefly's flash, a buffalo's breath, a shadow across the grass. This time, instead of simply admiring the words, I let them stir something deeper. I explore what it means to see life not as a serious, pressure-filled pursuit, but as something fleeting and sacred — a moment to be experienced, not conquered. I speak candidly about aging, self-discovery, values, and the humbling realization that I'm just a small part of something much greater. Through it all, I find a renewed sense of peace and appreciation for the earth beneath me, the time I have left, and the simple truth of just being. Now That You Ask is a podcast that looks at topics that range from death to desire, and from wondrous to downright whacky. I like the idea that being odd is what makes us special. The whimsical world of Dr. Seuss, and one quote in particular, reminds me of my childhood's limitless possibilities and I have learned that embracing my uniqueness is vital. I adopted the philosophy of "let your freak flag fly," celebrating my quirks and finding joy in being true to myself. This journey led to deeper connections with others, where moments of surprise and kinship flourish. Ultimately, I've embraced being number one in my own book and I encourage everyone to welcome their own individuality. The difference between hurried procrastination and trusting that things will be accomplished in good time is a matter of quieting the mind, trusting the process, and not allowing the overwhelming number of tasks there are in a day to induce anxiety. This episode features two short pieces reflecting on the my adventurous life and evolving sense of beauty. Inspired by a childhood admiration for fearless characters like Nancy Drew and the free spirit of wild horses, I share experiences of traveling and exploring diverse cultures in the Middle East during the 70s and 80s. Despite not viewing myself as particularly brave, my willingness to embrace new experiences paints a picture of a life led by intuition and a belief in inherent goodness. Next a contemplation of beauty, shifting from physical appearance to a deeper, internal essence discovered through poetry and personal acceptance. This introspection leads to a realization that true beauty is felt within the heart and soul, contrasting what is visible in the mirror with an inner happiness and wisdom that continues to grow. Now That You Ask is a podcast that looks at topics that range from death to desire, and from wondrous to downright whacky. Horse people are a community unto their own. My dear friend Nancy, a passionate horsewoman, is the one introduced me to the world of horses and riding about 20 years ago. It's quite remarkable how much there is to learn and master when it comes to riding and Nancy loved every aspect of it. Despite my initial apprehension towards horses due to a childhood incident, I have found joy in witnessing Nancy's daughter, Kate, and her granddaughter, Carter, embrace their love for horses. In fact, it was at Carter's first horse show, where I was moved to tears by the resemblance between Carter and Nancy, and the enduring impact of friendship and shared passion for horses.
