There's so much to learn from Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman—and even the language He used reveals the difference between what the world offers and what Christ gives. The woman spoke of water like stagnant cistern water, but Jesus spoke of living water—a bubbling, ever-refreshing spring that becomes a continual source of life and purpose for every believer (John 7:37–39). In this episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef highlights how Jesus offers the only satisfaction that can reach the deepest thirst—fulfillment the world can't provide, no matter how many pursuits promise joy but leave the soul empty. Then he turns to Jesus' example of sharing the Good News with someone from a very different background: Christ lingered, asked questions, refused to condemn, refused to excuse sin, and offered hope as a gift of grace. The result was transformation—repentance, cleansing, and a new future. And the promise extends to you: when you receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, rivers of living water flow from within you—an inexhaustible fountain meant to bless others as you share Christ with the spiritually parched around you. Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your offer of living water. Help me to remember that there are people all around me who are thirsty for that eternal life and love that only You can offer them. Give me courage and discernment to start those conversations that will lead people to You. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. “Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life'” (John 4:13-14). Learn more in Dr. Michael A. Today's guest, New York's yaya bey, is as talented as they come. Her unique take on R&B is propelled by a gorgeous voice, and the ability to shift to smooth effortless raps whenever she feels like it. But it's the intangibles with her music that really make her art special to me. Throughout her entire catalogue, she carries a grounded, worldly perspective to her music that feels both intelligent and authentically her own. She possesses an innate ability to infuse so much soul, vulnerability, and emotion into her songs - she really gets me in my feels to say the least. In this episode, we discuss lessons she's learnt about the industry so far in her music career, the public perception of her art, and the making of 2025's do it afraid, and her brand new album, Fidelity, dropping April 17... two albums serving as companions to one and other, that are surely some of the best R&B I've heard in recent memory. Navigating life's uncertainties often demands a virtue that seems elusive: patience. As I sit here writing, my thoughts are consumed by concern for my 18-and-a-half-year-old cat, Sid. This past week has been a whirlwind as Sid hasn't been eating or drinking much, and last night was especially tough with him getting sick multiple times. At the emergency vet today, waiting for test results, I find myself desperately trying to embody the patience, a daunting task for someone like me who's historically struggled with this virtue. While I fidget through this in-between time, the uncertainty of what the vet may find looms over me. Still, I understand that no matter the outcome, letting Sid know he's cherished is paramount. Conveying that sentiment without overwhelming him is what I aspire to achieve, hoping to embody patience and presence, for his sake and mine, as we await the future together. Now That You Ask is a podcast that looks at topics that range from death to desire, and from wondrous to downright whacky. Episode Notes One more hijacker gets shot as Rob comes back with guest Alex Marcus of the PopBreak Podcast.
Send us a textFairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz knows the power of a compellingly persuasive story. The elements of such a story can include setting a vivid scene, often with word pictures, a keen sense of the audience, and full engagement with the listeners. The story must not get lost in the translation. All of that lends itself well to this podcast episode's interviewee Matty Wegehaupt, who is an instructor of East Asian studies at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Matty first came to Jon Katz's attention in his role as English translator of the great collection of the late Korean Buddhist teacher Beopjeong Sunim's writings, entitled May All Beings Be Happy. In this translation, Matty does an excellent job in conveying the words and essence of Beopjeong. With so many speakers of English as a second language in Northern Virginia, Jon Katz repeatedly represents clients whose first language is not English. When a language interpreter is needed, the right interpreter is needed, not merely someone fully bilingual in two languages, but someone who has the personal and cultural sensitivity to sufficiently convey the meaning of the speaker and to assist the testifying witness in understanding what is being asked of the witness. The interpreter must have the attention and readiness to ask a speaker to repeat what the interpreter does not sufficiently hear, while also paying sufficient attention to what is being said. Matty fully understands that. Interpreting and translating is an art, rather than some sort of robotic exercise. Listen to Matty's telling of his journey from the Air Force Academy to leaving the academy when recognizing that warfare was not for him, ultimately choosing to learn in Korea, and learning the language when doing so was with fewer resources than today. Matty talks about the greatness of Beopjeong Sunim, the lessons and ideas from Beopjeong's life and writings, Beopjeong's experience during the Korean dictatorship, and his ability to relate well with a wide range of people. Matty talks not only about the importance of not fearing death, but also not fearing life. This shedding of fear is so very important for fighting in court. Going one step further about not fearing life involves fully engaging with the people and circumstances around us, no matter how seemingly unpleasant or not, which is also essential in court. Treading one's own powerful path is also vital for trial lawyers. In that regard, Matty here talks about how he disregarded Beopjeong's wish for his writings not to continue in publication after his passing, to the point that after Beopjeong's passing, Matty translated this monk's Pure and Fragrant collection of essays. Matty's clear voice shines throughout this interview. ____This episode is also available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Ykhyv_iCQhg.This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
"Art is a language without words." —Kate Bryan, author of How to Art: Bringing a Fancy Subject Down to Earth Why art? Why bring it into our lives? Why spend our hard-earned money on it? We often hear about the skyrocketing headline-making prices of paintings being sold at auction, but what's the point of purchasing something if the entire reason is to accrue value to sell later? The primary objective, Bryan shares, in writing this book, is to remove the assumed 'closed doors' or air of snobbery about art that she admits the art world itself has constructed. But, and she makes a strong argument, art, seeing it, appreciating it, making it, is part of being human. And to cordon it off, to claim that it is only a pastime for those with oodles of money or interest to acquire art of the upper echelons is preposterous. You may be wondering, Why is Shannon talking about this subject? What does art have to do with living simply luxuriously? With living a life of true contentment? It is precisely because true contentment is grounded in presence, seeing, clearing, and appreciating the everyday that the choice to bring art into our homes helps us savor each and every moment even more. When we bring works of art into our homes, we bring in a moment in the artist's life as they saw it. Their capturing of this ordinary moment in time, however they depict it, is a reminder that there is "beauty and marvels in the everyday". Even if we cannot or do not want to even try to be a literal artist, by gazing at their art, having it be present in our daily lives, we are continually reminded to see the gift in each day - to consciously look for it, take note of it without taking it for granted, and to savor it. Today, I would like to encourage you to consider, if you haven't already, acquiring an art collection to display in your home. Of course, how and where you display it, most likely throughout your home, will be up to you. Conveying your tastes, interests, and values in what each work depicts reflects a collector who engages with life in the present and brings their self-knowledge and quiet confidence to what captures their eye. Katy Stone is best known for her large-scale installations and wall sculptures. Working primarily in aluminum, Dura-Lar and plexiglass, her artworks are a proposition to reconsider landscape painting as an environmental, immersive dynamic. Suspended, or set in relief, the artist's drawn, cutout, painted, and stitched-together elements possess a vibrancy, a spirited energy and effect. Echoing fleeting clouds, falling leaves, moving water, and scattered light, they spill, climb and spread across the wall. This mimesis of nature locates the work in an earthly sphere but in a palpably conjured world created via the distinctive visual language she has developed over the decades. Conveying a movement from one state to another, from one moment to another, from one material to another, her compositions become universal metaphors for phenomena in nature through which we can glimpse the sublime. She received her BFA from Iowa State University and her MFA from the University of Washington and lives and works in Seattle. In this episode of Fresh Thinking by Snowden Optiro, Tarrant Elkington (General Manager, Snowden Optiro) is joined by Markus Dammers (Director, IPCC & Conveyors, Metso) to talk about what IPCC really means in practice, and whether "strategic conveying" is a more useful way to frame the conversation. They explore the spectrum of IPCC options (fixed, semi-mobile and fully mobile), where value is actually created (and lost) in mine planning, what people often miss when they consider in-pit systems, and how lead times, standardisation and decarbonisation assumptions influence decisions. Key timestamps: 1:24 What does "IPCC" actually cover (and why it's often used as an umbrella term)? 3:37 IPCC's real purpose: reducing trucks, not always eliminating them 5:39 Is "strategic conveying" a better term than IPCC? 7:25 Fully mobile (truckless) IPCC: where it works, and why hard rock is challenging 12:30 In-pit crushers: the planning and operational complications people underestimate 18:53 Lead times, standardisation and improving study-to-delivery pathways 24:41 Decarbonisation: diesel, carbon assumptions, and balancing ESG with economics 29:57 Wrap-up and how to learn more If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe for more mining-focused technical discussions across the mine value chain. In this episode of Fresh Thinking by Snowden Optiro, Dr Tarrant Elkington (General Manager, Snowden Optiro) and Markus Dammers (Director IPCC & Conveyors, Metso) explore their rapid screening tool designed to speed up evaluation of In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) options. They discuss how the model helps mining operations quickly assess economic viability, reduce decision uncertainty, and identify where IPCC truly makes sense - saving valuable study time and capital. If you're in mine planning, haulage optimisation, or exploring electrification and sustainability in mining, this episode is packed with insight. Key Points & Timeline 1:00 – Why the Paper and Model Were Developed The challenge of evaluating IPCC options and the need for a quick, macro-economic decision framework. 3:30 – Complexity of IPCC Decisions Discussing parameters such as pit depth, relocation timing, and haulage versus conveying trade-offs. 4:00 – Origins of the Rapid Screening Tool How a practical spreadsheet model evolved to assess the feasibility of IPCC across multiple projects. 6:00 – Key Inputs and Parameters Understanding capacity, conveyor length and lift, and the dynamic relationship between truck and conveyor economics. 8:00 – Macro-Economic Viewpoint Why early-stage, big-picture modelling matters for major mine investment decisions. 9:00 – How the Model Works Overview of how the Excel-based tool compares IPCC and trucking using NPV, IRR, and payback calculations. 11:00 – Ore vs Waste Applications How the economics differ when applying IPCC to ore versus waste haulage scenarios. 12:00 – Building Reliable Cost Models Markus explains Metso's structured approach to estimating realistic capital and operating costs for crushers and conveyors. 15:00 – Accounting for Excavation and Ramp Design Tarrant explains the importance of considering excavation and pit geometry in cost evaluation. 17:00 – Case Study Results Findings from applying the tool to typical mining scenarios, comparing ex-pit and in-pit setups. 19:00 – Economic Sensitivities and Insights Discussion of throughput, lift, and distance variables — and how they shape viability. 21:00 – Waste IPCC Economics Why higher capacities and longer distances are needed to make waste IPCC feasible. 23:00 – Future Improvements and Next Steps Potential refinements to the tool and how it could support more dynamic project planning. 2 4:30 – Closing Thoughts How to access or apply the model for your own operation and where to contact the speakers. Some musicians do better with chaos. Others under deadlines and with teams. Tristan Clopet is a rare pro who's done both, and because of it knows the value of working towards a greater goal with a big team (and bigger pressure).Tristan's prolific work on film and TV scores gives him a deep insight into the nature of that side of the industry (and how different it is from his touring days supporting X Ambassadors, Billy Bragg, Tove Lo, Glen Hansard, and The Weeknd). It's a collaborative, deadline-oriented, large effort, with hundreds of creatives contributing to the final work. He shares how inspiring that journey is, and how knowing the boundaries can unlock even more creativity. I loved his story about scoring to Martin Freeman's solo acting in a car. More on whether the conveyance of the blood from the place of slaughter to the altar needs to be via walking. Plus, how to handle a bird, whose slaughtering is already at the altar, without collection and conveyance of the blood. The discussion, when reported in the land of Israel generated laughter, which is eventually explained. What about a non-kohen doing the conveying? With all kinds of possible permutations.

Experienced legal authority David Oscar Markus has raised significant concerns over the manner in which Judge Juan Merchan has chosen to address the jury involved in the recent hush money case associating former President Donald Trump in New York. Markus detailed his worries on a CNN panel, highlighting the Judge's unusual decision to address the jury only verbally, instead of additionally providing them with physical copies of the instructions for their deliberations as is common practice. This deviation from standard process, taken just before the jury members embarked on their crucial task of deliberating on a historical case involving a past U.S. president, has caused quite a stir in the legal community. Markus, a veteran of criminal defense, outlined his concerns about the intense impact this woefully different approach could likely have on the jury members. Conveying his beliefs with conviction, Markus argued, “The jury must be overwhelmed. Not being able to physically revisit the judge's directives could be intimidating and exhausting for the jurors.” Such unprecedented changes in the system have not been openly discussed before, sparking an intense debate about the fair application of the law. Fanning the flames of this controversy, Markus was also taken aback by the lack of discussion about the instructions during the preceding closing remarks by the legal teams involved. He noted this interactive exchange, where lawyers usually have reiteration rights over the instructions to relay their arguments in context, was noticeably absent in this particular courtroom situation. Today, we're going into the archive and bringing out an episode where Donald is joined by executive coach Susie Tomenchok to learn how sales professionals can master negotiating without manipulating. Negotiation isn't manipulation: Incorporating negotiating strategies and techniques helps you and your team reach its needs or goals and opens the door for priorities to be rearranged and met. It's not a winner/loser situation – negotiation should come from a place where you look to satisfy everyone. Low-stakes negotiation happens every day. Mastering negotiation is the key to developing long-term success. Conveying your interests isn't manipulation – it's telling your story to meet your needs. Barriers to entering a high-stakes negotiation: PACE: Prepare – aware – close – evaluate Prepare, think at the moment, and be as objective as possible. Be aware of both your and the other party's interests. Uncover relevant information to reach the close. How can you expect to negotiate well if you don't know what you want? There are many pieces of leverage at play when in negotiation. Be mindful of those levers to explore and realize what solution honors both parties. Understand the solution from their perspective: Negotiating conveys interests and beliefs – it's an opportunity to connect and learn to know, like, and trust another person. As a seller, asking questions about the other party helps you learn more about them and why they're not siding with you on the issue. Even if you know the answer, never make an assumption. Let the other party be heard. Be intentional with silence: Practice what you say, and teach yourself not to ramble after speaking. Some people think of it as a game – just practice not talking, and you'll grow more comfortable with it. We listen least actively to people we know. Practicing silence can interrupt that cadence and convey attention to the other party. Susie's final takeaway? Anchor ideas you want others to know early on to allow the other party to get their head around it. In Episode 1619, Sean Woodley is joined by Richard Stayman (Locked On NBA Big Board) to chat about the state of the 2024 NBA Draft class, the Toronto Raptors' muddled pick situation and some potential players who could be snug fits in Toronto with the Indiana Pacers pick and/or the Detroit Pistons pick at the top of the second round. Off the top, Sean and Richard discuss whether not this draft class is as light on talent as it's been suggested in the lead-up to the Draft, why Alex Sarr is the only higher end prospect he truly believes in having substantial upside, and the notion that the best players in this draft will probably come from outside the Top-10. Next, Sean and Richard tap into the biggest debate of our time: To Keep, or Convey the Raptors' Top-6 protected pick. Of course it's entirely out of the Raptors' control, but should Raptors fans be rooting for the team to hang onto this year's pick at 6, or convey it now and make their pick in 2025 wherever it may fall? Lastly, they run through some potential fits with the Raptors in the late teens or at 31 with their other two picks in this draft, including Tristan da Silva, Isaiah Collier, Kyshawn George, Ryan Dunn, Tyon Grant-Foster, Ulrich Chomche and more!
