If we were the owner of the Steelers – if we were Art Rooney II, would we fire Mike Tomlin at the end of the season? Assuming the train is set for the same destination as the last near-decade, we all said Yes. Mike said today that he doesn't care where good ideas come from, but then why are the assistant coaches so poor? The guys went through some of the assistants and coordinators over the years under Tomlin. How many of those names would we give a passing grade to? People are having a tough time remembering what Bill Cowher was able to accomplish with pretty lackluster QBs. And don't look now because things in the 1980's weren't as bad as they are now as Steelers fans. Tomlin Tidbit – Why aren't the Steelers using Pat Freiermuth in the offense? The numbers tell you that they should.
Sweating it Out: The Shocking Conditioning Secrets of 1923 FootballWe often think of football conditioning as a precise science of hydration, nutrition, and tailored strength programs. But a century ago, the rules of getting in shape were dramatically different. Darin Hayes of Pigskin Dispatch recently dove into the past with Timothy Brown of Football Archaeology to explore an article from the 1923 season, revealing the bizarre, and sometimes dangerous, training philosophies that shaped early gridiron stars. The episode stems from one of Tim's Tidbits titled: How Conditioning took place in 1923.The primary source for this peek into the past is the Wilson Athletic Library, a series of publications giving professional advice for the era. The specific guidance on "conditioning" came from two knowledgeable figures: Potsy Clark, a coach at Kansas (and a future NFL head coach), and John Griffith, the influential commissioner of the Big Ten. Their shared philosophy was heavily rooted in tradition and what they believed to be common sense, even when it defied basic human physiology. The Dangerous Doctrine of "Water Discipline"The most striking, and arguably most harmful, advice given was the strict adherence to water discipline: explicitly telling athletes not to drink water close to or during practice. This widespread but dangerous belief held that withholding water would make players tougher, similar to the old notion of not swimming after eating. As Timothy Brown points out, this practice put players in significant danger, especially when combined with the gear of the era. Everything worn was cotton, wool, or leather—heavy, non-wicking fabrics that made it impossible for players to perspire properly and cool down. Depriving yourself of water while wearing gear that traps heat only compounded the risk of heat-related illness. The Summer Slump PhilosophyThe coaches of 1923 also held a remarkably casual attitude toward summer training. Conditioning, in their minds, wasn't something players needed a formal program for. Instead, the ideal preparation was for athletes to be "farm boys" or to engage in "good outdoor labor" like construction, dock work, or lifeguarding. Any kind of heavy, physical work outside was deemed superior to formalized pre-season training, because that, as Brown notes, is what "training camp was for."Training camp itself was the six-week period designed to get the players in shape. This philosophy was exemplified by the tales of players like Red Grange, who gained legendary strength hauling massive blocks of ice, earning him the nickname "Wheat and Iceman."The Art of Avoiding "Staleness"Clark and Griffith's advice also focused on the non-physical elements of team administration, especially avoiding the dreaded state of "staleness." They believed a coach must walk a delicate balance: working the athletes hard, but not overworking them. If a player was "stale," it was considered the worst thing that could happen to their performance. The key barometer for a coach to know if they had pushed the team too far? Player complaints. While lazy players would complain regardless, a coach knew they had crossed the line when even the hard-working, dedicated athletes started voicing their displeasure. The contrast between the rudimentary, sometimes dangerous, conditioning of 1923 and the hyper-scientific training of today is a fascinating look at how far the gridiron has evolved. It proves that even a century ago, coaches were desperate to find that competitive edge, even if they were wrong about the most fundamental elements of human survival.Join us at the

We still don't know how the Aaron Rodgers decision went down on Sunday morning – or, according to Mike Tomlin, Saturday night. Poni thinks Tomlin is being coy because he has to be careful who he is talking about. Is it more of a gray area for Rodgers when it comes to injuries? The Vegas line has it baked in that Rodgers has a 50/50 chance to play. How much ramp up time does Rodgers need? We found a Mike Tomlin defender out there. Is it the players or the scheme that lead to defensive struggles? Tomlin Tidbit – Mike Tomlin couldn't wait to answer the Hines Ward HOF question.
Timothy P. Brown joins us to discuss a significant historical football game that took place on Thanksgiving in 1932, focusing on the remarkable achievements of Colgate University during that season. The discussion is based on Tim's Tidbit titled: The 1932 Colgate-Brown Thanksgiving Game for the Rose Bowl The Greatest Team That Wasn't Invited: Colgate's Unscored-Upon 1932 SeasonFor many, Thanksgiving means turkey and football. But in 1932, it meant a historic, high-stakes showdown that cemented one team's place in college football lore. This was the scene for the Thanksgiving Day game between the undefeated Colgate Red Raiders and the equally unbeaten Brown Bears, a story recently shared by football historian Timothy P. Brown on the Pigskin Daily History Dispatch podcast. The game pitted two Eastern powerhouses against each other in a deeply rooted rivalry game. Going into the matchup, Coach Andy Kerr's Colgate squad boasted an immaculate 8-0 record, having dominated their opponents with a staggering 243-0 cumulative score. Brown was also 8-0, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated East Coast battles of the decade. Kerr, a notable disciple of coaching legend Pop Warner (he was even sent to coach Stanford for two years in Warner's place), employed a highly effective, pass-oriented double-wing offense that consistently produced high scores.21 Points of PerfectionThe national press built the game up as a Rose Bowl elimination contest, with the winner thought to be the most deserving contender. Colgate, fueled by the desire to cap an already legendary season, needed one specific number to secure another national title: the scoring crown. They needed 21 points against Brown to surpass West Liberty and claim the national scoring title. In a feat of near-perfect offensive execution, Colgate won the game 21-0. The win not only ensured they finished the year a national scoring leader, but more impressively, it completed the most dominant season in modern college football history. The Uninvited LegendColgate's final record was 9-0, undefeated, untied, and unscored upon. Yet, when the invitations were handed out, the famous line was coined: The 1932 Red Raiders were “undefeated, untied, unscored upon, and uninvited.”The Pacific Coast Conference ultimately chose Pitt to play in the Rose Bowl, a team that subsequently lost to USC 35-0. While the Rose Bowl passed them over, Colgate secured a far more exclusive and permanent title: they remain the last major college football team to finish a season unscored upon. Coach Andy Kerr's legacy extends beyond the 1932 team; in a four-year stretch, his teams averaged nearly 33 points a game while only allowing two, an incredible combination that defines one of football's most enduring mysteries.Join us at the Pigskin Dispatch website to see even more Positive football news! Welcome to “Water Break”, where we try to bridge the gap between Water Operators and Engineers! Today's episode is our 48th and to celebrate, we have brought back Wanda Baustert of “Wanda's Water Tidbits”. Today, you get to hear her opinions directly.
George Pickens had another big night as the Cowboys rolled to a win in Las Vegas. Is a lot of the fanbase starting to look wrong about that trade? Pickens is mostly behaving with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott. His coach actually disciplined him a little bit to begin the game. Chris isn't walking it back and said it was a trade the Steelers needed to make. Prescott probably deserves the brunt of the credit because he is far and away the best QB Pickens has ever played with. Would DK Metcalf have better numbers if Pickens was still here? Even though it's fair, a lot is being assumed about what Pickens in Pittsburgh in 2025 would have been like. Should the Steelers regret trading George Pickens for a 3rd round pick? Tomlin Tidbit – It sounds like Mike Tomlin is ready to give Darius Slay his job back once he's healthy.
Mike Tomlin isn't worried about Aaron Rodgers after the other night. Poni thinks it was a bad enough game to scare him about the season's future with him at QB. At what point are we ready for Mason Rudolph? There should be bounce back games against the Bengals and Bears, given their defenses. Even if the Steelers go to Rudolph and he bails them out again, it still makes Tomlin look bad. What would the threshold have to be for you to bench Rodgers? Callers shared feeling on Aaron Rodgers after 10 weeks. Tomlin Tidbit – When will we see Marquez Valdes-Scantling?

We are just over an hour away from the NFL Trade Deadline. Still nothing from the Steelers today. Poni's latest WR rumor is that the Steelers called the Cardinals about Marvin Harrison Jr., but it doesn't seem like talks picked up much steam. Did the Steelers miss out on Rashid Shaheed? Tomlin Tidbit – Has Jalen Ramsey found a new position?
This podcast episode delves into the historical implications of incomplete passes within the realm of American football, particularly during the formative years of the forward pass. We engage with Timothy Brown of FootballArchaeology.com, who elucidates the punitive measures that accompanied early forward passing, revealing how such restrictions shaped the evolution of the game. As we traverse through the timeline of rule modifications from 1906 to 1934, we observe the gradual easing of penalties associated with incomplete passes, which transitioned from severe consequences to more lenient measures that fostered the development of offensive strategies. We discuss how these changes not only reflect the changing attitudes towards the forward pass but also illustrate the intricate relationship between running and passing plays in the sport. Through this exploration, we aim to provide listeners with a comprehensive understanding of how historical regulations have influenced modern football dynamics.Tim's original Tidbit on the subject is: A Look at Early Incomplete Pass Penalties - Join us at the Pigskin Dispatch website to see even more Positive football news! Hello Friend! Welcome back to claiming simplicity. If you are new here, welcome! I so glad to have you here! I often hear moms complain about not spending enough time with their kids or missing kids' events because of work, but then don't do anything to change their situation. A good indication of what is important to you is what you spend money on. You might say Jesus and family first, but your checkbook might say otherwise. Another way to look at it is where are you spending your time. If you spent most evenings in the gym, I would say sports are important to you, or if you spend alot of time on your phone, it may look like social media is important to you. Sometimes the values don't truely line up, so I just want to give you a few tidbits to help you live out your values so when the guilt of not spending time with your kids, you know where you can start to change that. So grab a pen and paper and lets get to work. If you are driving, make sure to come back to this, because this can change the direction of your life as it did mine! First, you need to make a list of what are your true priorities because if you are saying this is important, but your pocketbook and time are not confirming that, there will be friction and you won't feel aligned and something will always feel off. Once you have your true priorities and most important values written down, now I want you to go to your calendar and bank account and see where exactly your time and money is going. This is so very important and very eye opening for many that I work with. For example, if you want a simpler life, but your calendar is always full, there will be friction and you may feel a little anxious, so the 3rd step is to figure out a way to get there. With this example, maybe it is less time shopping or this may even be spending all your time at sports events when you can say no to live simpler if this is a top priority. There are so many options, but in order to live this life of simplicity, you have to get good at saying no and making sure that you are saying yes to the right items that line up with your values. When your life is coming to an end, will you be proud and peaceful about how you lived it or will you be stressed and worn out until the end? I hope you will have peace living a simpler life that you are able to create. It is simple to do, but you do have to take the steps to get there. Blessings! A couple of penalties for Joey Porter Jr., which he is prone to do when playing the Bengals. Mike Tomlin said it had to do with the receivers he faced in that game. What happened to Mike acting as if the Steelers had built the greatest secondary of all-time? How many guys on the defense are playing better than we expected them to? The secondary seems in such disarray we are getting questions about Cory Trice and his return. How much faith do you have in this defense? Tomlin Tidbit – Why was Nick Herbig so limited against the Bengals?
The discourse herein elucidates a fascinating historical evolution within the realm of football, particularly emphasizing the substantial size of footballs in the sport's nascent stages. Timothy Brown of Football Archaeology provides an in-depth exploration of the transition from the original 30-inch circumference balls to their modern counterparts, underscoring how the sport's early practitioners grappled with the challenges posed by such unwieldy equipment. As we delve into the intricacies of this subject, we uncover not only the practical implications of ball size on gameplay but also the broader historical context that facilitated the sport's evolution. Throughout this episode, we further investigate the interplay between football and rugby, illuminating how the American version of the game emerged and adapted over time. We invite our listeners to join us in this comprehensive examination of football's storied past, as we reflect on the remarkable journey that has led to the contemporary understanding of the game.Timothy Brown of Football Archaeology joins us for the reasons and the history of the size changes based on his recent Tidbit titled: When Football Had Bigger Balls Join us at the Pigskin Dispatch website to see even more Positive football news! This week Adam took on a subject I'm guessing pretty close to 100% of the audience will care about; how to tame Liquid Glass on OSes 26. We go through macOS, iOS, watchOS, and even tvOS. This conversation must go hand-in-hand with Adam's article on TidBITS where he has screenshots of everything you'll hear us talk about. I have to say, the most impressive thing about the article IS the screenshots. How he managed to keep such consistency whilst applying each setting is amazing. How to Turn Liquid Glass into a Solid Interface - TidBITS As we were going through tvOS, you'll hear me mention an article I wrote with a tip for how to improve contrast on Apple TV, especially to help you to be able to tell which item is selected. Allison reported to us how it went, gave us the details on the course, and described the challenges she faced. We then talked about the Chicago Marathon, where among other things, Conner Mantz set a new American record in the men's marathon. We then touched on a few of the other things we tracked this weekend, including the Kodiak 100, the Ironman World Championship in Kona, and the Athlos Games!
Penn State players are defending James Franklin after the firing. How much credit does he deserve for helping Penn State out of the depths following the Joe Paterno sanction years? Bill O'Brien was the first coach out of that scandal, but Franklin carried the ball much further down the field. What made it so ugly in State College? Did Franklin get a raw deal? Rich Rodriguez believes he did. Was it the right time for James Franklin to go? Tomlin Tidbit – Is Joey Porter Jr. ready to see Tee Higgins again?

My guest is the oldest of two daughters, with seven years between she and her younger sister. Mina was working the night shift at a factory, when she was pregnant with her first daughter. Parita shares that her mom used to let she and her sister explore as much as they needed when they were young. Both daughters were pushed academically and socially, but the girls found comfort in the fact that there mom would be there if ever they needed her. Mina was the oldest of four daughters. Parita's Maternal Grandfather said, "God didn't give me a son but he gave me the strongest daughters." Parita continues saying "her mother has experienced grief , being misunderstood because she's a strong, capable, ambitious woman who's not afraid to speak her mind when she sees injustice." "It's taught me me that you have to be who your are. You have to come to the table with who you are, " commented Parita.Enjoy this listen. Abstract: As is well known, the Book of Mormon is a brief spiritual account from many centuries of Lehite and Jaredite peoples. Some of its authors mentioned that the book contains very little (not even 1%) of what happened, especially of non-spiritual matters. Nevertheless, from the tidbits of information found in the book, many have deduced or speculated on aspects of Nephite, Lamanite, and Jaredite life, including where the events took place. In Book of Mormon Ecology, R. Kent Crookston analyzes agricultural, ecological, and physical information in the Book of Mormon and proposes that its peoples lived in a Mediterranean climate, not in Mesoamerica. Seeds from Jerusalem growing well in America, seasons of grain and fruit, and east winds have good connections to Mediterranean climates. His analysis raises pertinent questions about Mesoamerican models. However, many conclusions have a weak basis or do not consider other evidence strongly correlated to a Mesoamerican setting, including ecological factors. For other details, reasonable explanations also fit a Mesoamerican model. A definitive post-oceanic locale of Book of Mormon peoples remains elusive and controversial because of meager non-spiritual information in the book, multiple plausible interpretations of non-spiritual words, and insufficient archaeological data throughout the Americas. The post Some Good Questions, but Large Inferences from Tidbits first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.
