Ep.153 – Two Pieces of Data Tells the World About You What if I told you that only two pieces of data would tell me everything I needed to know about you?  Could you guess what they would be? These two data points show where your money goes and how you prioritize your time.  I'll explore how understanding these elements can help align your spending and scheduling with your core values and life goals.  Whether it's uncovering your financial patterns or evaluating how you allocate your time, small tweaks can lead to significant improvements in finding harmony between your financial and emotional life.  Connect with Paul Contact Paul here or schedule a time to meet with Paul here. How could anyone disagree?

Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

On this week's KIR, Cam Marston wonders if he could do the same thing for fifteen years and know, just know in his bones, that it would pay off. ----- I've just watched the documentary on Steve Martin called "Steve! A Documentary in Two Pieces." I've always liked Steve Martin. What caught my attention the most is that he did his standup act for fifteen years. The vast majority of that time, his audiences were very small. In one video clip, he's counting the number of people in the room during his act – there were fifteen people there. He got what he thought were big breaks that bombed, in one case opening for Anne Margaret in Las Vegas and after he finished his act all his belongings had been put in a box outside his dressing room. However, the last stand-up comedy act he did was at the Nassau Coliseum outside New York City where he sold it out three nights in a row – 45,000 people each night. After the third night, he walked off the stage, never to do that act ever again. He was at the top of his game. It took him fifteen years to get there. And then he was done. Question: Who of us have the will, the fortitude, to persevere for fifteen years – fifteen years - with the hope – actually, the confidence – that what we're doing will ultimately pan out. When giving up or changing course is a very real option but we chose not to do it because our vision of what could be is so strong. I'm not sure I do. How many of us can see the need for a change, or see a change coming, and get out in front of it, remain confident amongst the failure and rejection, and never waver. A number of times during the documentary Martin says that he did his act because he had few other options. The little money it brought in was all he had. Those interviewed, though, said he was waiting for society to catch up to his humor. Steve Martin changed standup and comedy and humor. He could see the change coming, but the vast majority of society wasn't aware that a change was happening. Martin saw it coming, ever so slowly, so he kept going. It's one thing to ID forthcoming changes in technology and how to get ahead of those changes to profit from new products – think Steve Jobs and the iPod – but what Steve Martin did was predict a change in the ethos of the United States following Vietnam. He had a hunch people would be different. And he kept at it. And, in time he was proven right. What's the moral of this story? Someone like that is out there amongst us right here and right now. Doing something we think is foolish, or that doesn't seem funny, or saying something that doesn't sound smart or goes against the grain of society. We ridicule them or cast them aside or, more likely, just ignore them. But they keep coming back. Perhaps, we should take a look. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.

Donald Macleod explores a crucial decade in Sibelius's life The 1910s were a crucial decade in Sibelius's life. He would write some of his greatest works during these ten years, including his fourth and fifth symphonies and the beginnings of his sixth. Sibelius's meditations on the symphony and its role in his creative life are a recurring theme in the week's programmes. This period also reflects Sibelius's life in microcosm, including his battles with alcohol and indebtedness; his need for the stimulus of foreign travel, and the periods of creative inertia, which would decisively return during his later years. We travel around the world with Sibelius, returning to Finland at the outbreak of the first world war, which would have a major impact on his life and work, not least with the Finnish Civil War of 1918 and Finland's subsequent independence: these were formative events for Sibelius. We also home in on Sibelius's personal life and relationships during the 1910s, including his money troubles coming to a head, and the return of alcohol to his life from 1917, after years of abstinence. Episode 34 -- Spiritual Combat c21.1 -- How to Use your Senses

Lectio et Oratio

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2021 6:42

What good are our five senses in the spiritual combat? Last episode, we read chapter 20 which was all about combatting Sloth. The main answer to this enemy is faithfulness, diligence in good works that are small. Why are small good works so valuable? God loves small things done with great love. Let us ask for the grace to be faithful in small things. Sloth makes us neglect the small things. Why? They seem so difficult. But Christ said, he who is faithful in little will be faithful in much (Luke 16:10). He who was faithful with the five talents, received more (Mt 25). Those who were faithful in the master's money were given many kingdoms (Luke 19).. Small things matter..because they build up virtues, good habits, interior readiness. Small things matter...go after one enemy at a time...cannot fight them all. God is with you. You will hold off the rest! Two Pieces of ADVICE about Prayer: When you think you want to pray for an hour...cannot you not watch one hour with me? Jesus asked….but you feel distaste...you do not want to pray for so long...just do this.....pray for 15 minutes......after that...pray for another 15 minutes… BUT sometimes, if the repugnance is so great...leave it...stop...come back later... take a short break.   MANUAL LABOUR...WORK Why are we so afraid? Why dread work? Why dread labour? Why are we so scared of losing our ease? Why do we keep ourselves from taking the first step? SLOTH truly ruins so much! Lord help us! What if I do not live to see tomorrow? What if the heavenly Bridegroom appears tonight? But why is SLOTH so hard to conquer? Because the Lord wants to give you even greater gifts. This may be the hardest vice to beat. But because it requires so much conquering of self, the reward is even greater. Many saints had this vice as their predominant fault...their predominant passion was for Rest, Ease…   Courage!   In this episode, we will read chapter 21. Chapter 21 moves from talking about our intellect/understanding and our will to our lower powers (the senses).

Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/woodshoplife   Guy 1) Hey guys! I love the pod cast, ya'll really do a great job. My question is about radial arm saws. I have recently started selling tables on the side to try and make some extra cash. Right now I do pretty much all my cross cuts with my 10" Chicago Electric miter saw and I am tired of having to flip over anything wider then a 2×4 to cross cut. It seams that these radial arm saws are a dime a dozen on the market place apps and can be bought pretty cheap. How do they stack up to a sliding miter saw? I've really been thinking about giving one a shot just based on the $75 price tag. - Jimmy 2) Another question for you all. Every power tool I own seems to come with it's own set of tools - allen wrenches, different heads, attachments, maybe a spare cutter or bolt, etc. How do you organize these 'spare parts' in your shops to keep them handy when you need them, and help identify which of these things belong to which tools? Attach them to the tool somehow (with string? duct tape? magnets?) With hand power tools, keep the paraphernalia with the tool? The Ziploc bag method I'm using now seems so gauche. thanks for the great show Mark mlbettwoodworks   Sean 1)In a recent episode you discussed laminating two pieces of hardwood together and the need to offset grain directions to avoid warping. I’m building a simple, traditional writing desk (with a modern flare) and my plan is to accent the air dried walnut drawer fronts (5/8” thick) with an 1/8” piece of curly maple. I’ll be routing out the section to receive the maple taking the walnut thickness to about 3/8”. My plan at that point was to laminate the maple into place. Is this a situation where I should be concerned about movement? Do you think the lack of material thickness will minimize these potential issues? Any advice or input would be helpful.  I have sent a sketch photo to your IG page for reference. Cheers, Taylor (not Tyler) 2) I recently completed a build for two white oak desktops and, in my excitement to see how the grain would pop and without considering the ramifications of my actions, I threw on some mineral oil. Man, those desktops looked BEAUTIFUL. After applying just one coat, I realized I should've done some research. I'm still learning about finishing techniques and figured I could use mineral oil the same way as mineral spirits in this context. I quickly realized the gigantic mistake I had made. After spending some time on a few woodworking forums, it became clear that there's really nothing to do but lean into finishing these desktops with more coats of oil as no other finishes will properly adhere. However, I have seen some comments mentioning shellac as a possible option since shellac and mineral oil are used in combination for French polishing. This is not necessarily the look I'm going for but I'm wondering what you'd advise in this situation. PS I'd really like to avoid sanding it all down again. And its 10 degrees outside so I'm limited in chemical options if I have to open the garage doors for ventilation. Thank you guys for all you do. This podcast is always a huge help! Christina   Huy 1)I currently have my bandsaw (Rikon 10-326) set up for resaw with a 1/2" Woodslicer blade and its working great, but now I need to cut some curved workpieces. I only need to do a couple and then I would want to go back to the setup for resaw. I dread having to change the blade and set the guides for 1 cut, and then again for resaw, but I also don't want to distort or dull my resaw blade. Should I just use this blade for both jobs or is there a blade or configuration that works for general purpose to minimize the changing blades and guide setup? Dan 2) I have a question regarding drawer slides: I am just getting into cabinet making and am excited to slowly make cabinets for my shop. I am first working on a built-in of sorts in my house as part of a bathroom remodel. The built in faces out into the hallway and the back juts into the bathroom, it creates a nook for the toilet area. I made the carcass and have it installed in the wall so that the bathroom side of the project can continue. I plan to have two deep drawers on the bottom and then shelves with drawers above. I am a little unsure of how to properly size the drawer slides and would love to hear a discussion from you three on this subject. I ordered 21" undermount Blum softclose slides last fall when I was planning the project. Now that the carcass is made, the inside depth from front (frameless design) to back is 20 3/4". I see quite a bit online regarding how to install various drawer slides including different YouTube videos that you guys have but I am having trouble with the beginner step of learning how to size the drawer box and drawer slide properly. Do I buy a slide for the cabinet depth or for what my drawer box will be? I think the next available size down for a Blum slide is 18", will this be difficult to mount in my deeper carcass? Thanks guys, keep up the great content! Jeremy

Ryan is hanging out with Weird Al Yankovic this week, so Fill Me In is graced with the brilliant wit and charm of guest host Jeff Talbott, Not The Dentist and Compleatist. But here's the thing. We don't do tech very well. And Jeff's side of the recording got a little janky at times, and two things happened. One, we had to filter his voice so he sounds slightly non-human. And two, there is sometimes a bonus echo of Brian (often out of sync). And unannounced thing number three, Brian is out of town and trying to mix this on his ancient laptop, so -- you know what, you already downloaded the episode, so our stats still look good. Works for cello and piano by Michael Kannen and Steven Beck, and piano quartet by Musicians from Ravinia's Steans Institute.Webern: Two Pieces for Cello and PianoBrahms: Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25Our program today pairs a robust Brahms chamber music masterpiece—in this case the First Piano Quartet in G minor—with a piece by the Second Viennese School, examining Schoenberg’s assertion that Brahms was really the original progressive. We’ll begin with Webern’s Two Pieces for Cello and Piano, performed by cellist Michael Kannen and pianist Steven Beck. Though undoubtedly the work of a young composer—Webern was at the time a 15-year-old high school student—the music contains glimmers of what Webern would become. The listener may be quite surprised by the strong Romantic influence, which is markedly different from later works. After the Webern, we’ll hear the Brahms First Piano Quartet, played by Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. Although this piece seems traditional, Brahms is innovating beneath the surface, weaving the four movements together with recurring thematic material. The final movement is perhaps the best known and is particularly delightful—a lively gypsy rondo.
