Back before the internet and cable TV, before jobs and kids, before ipods and iphones, and especially before iTunes, this funny thing used to happen. People used to actually go to the record store at midnight to be among the first to buy a new album by their favorite artist. Then you’d walk home, ma…
Here are all the songs from season 2 of Record Time, including a couple for episodes we never got to record. We need to press pause on the metaphorical Record Time tape, so wanted to say thanks for listening and playing along from home. Let's all go and enjoy as much music as we can. Check out Pete's band The Rockmores at www.therockmores.com.
Pete and Tim round out the first half of season 2 bringing some rays of sunshine to a cold October night with Bob Marley's 1975 album LIVE. Contemplate the one drop, trances and the invention of the meme-worthy word "hangry", and get down and skanky with some of the greatest live reggae ever put to record. The episode ends with the boys' cover of "Trenchtown Rock", with special guests Dave DeSimone on drums and Keith Messier on guitar. Next up: Alison Krauss and Union Station's "Live" from 2003. twitter: @recordtimepod facebook: / recordtimepodcast gmail: recordtimepodcast@ 937-PETE-TIM
PNYC represents the live album and DVD of Portishead's lush and immersive live show with the NY Philharmonic at the Roseland Ballroom. Recorded in 1998, this album is the crowning achievement of the pioneering trip hop group. Revel in the raw energy and cinematic expansiveness, and marvel at Beth Gibbons' perfect vocals. We end with our cover of "Sour Times" featuring Jasmine Moran on the flute. Next up, 1975's Bob Marley Live! twitter:@recordtimepod facebook: recordtimepodcast 937-PETE-TIM
Pete and Tim both really hope if there's one album you listen to this season, it's THIS one. It deserves every ounce of recognition and appreciation it can get. Before writing "Falling Slowly" and starring in the movie "Once", Glen Hansard had an incredible indie rock band that really knew how to work an audience. Check out the energy, musicianship and raw emotion of this incredible experience, documented for all to enjoy. Pete and Tim end with their cover of the angsty "Pavement Tune". Next time we check out the trip hop classic Portishead, live from the Roseland Ballroom in 1998 (aka "PYNC"). twitter:@recordtimepod 937-PETE-TIM
Pete and Tim return in episode 2 with a belt and a sizzle - Judy Garland's marathon of a 1961 performance at Carnegie Hall, one of the most popular live albums in history. Dig the many layers and complexities of Judy's personality, and how she brings it to life in her performances and song choices. We send you off this episode with our cover of "After You're Gone", which we think came out particularly well! facebook:/recordtimepodcast twitter:@recordtimepod gmail:recordtimepodcast@ 937-PETE-TIM
Pete and Tim are BACK for Season 2 with Record Time LIVE, a collection of 10 unforgettable live albums that demand you to stop, focus and listen deep. We kick things off with one of the most powerful nights in rock music history, Jimi Hendrix' performance at Monterrey Pop festival in 1967, captured for all time as the incredible "Live at Monterrey". Revel in Jimi's humble mastery, his graceful face-melting and his thunderous band, and reflect on what this moment meant for the music that American kids grew up on for decades. We cap the episode with our cover of "Wind Cries Mary". Next up: Judy Garland - "Judy Judy Judy, Live at Carnegie Hall" facebook:/recordtimepodcast twitter:@recordtimepod gmail:@recordtimepodcast 937-PETE-TIM
Pete and Tim are preparing season 2 - Record Time LIVE! - all about live albums. Here's a teaser, a single monster live track, from the live EP Wide Awake in America. U2 lays it down in a far superior way to their original, making it what would become one of the anchors of their live site. Pete & Tim end Season 1 of Record Time with a celebration of one of the greats - the Rolling Stones, and their seminal mess of a record Exile on Main St. How do you capture magic on tape? Does chaos make better music? is it possible to call an album with no huge hits the best rock and roll record of all time? Let's get into it. We drink french bordeaux in the spirit of the band's exile to the south of France, and finish out our season with a rousing cover of Loving Cup, feature Dave DeSimone on drums. See you soon for season 2, where we take our deep dives to live albums. twitter:@recordtimepod facebook: /recordtimepodcast gmail: recordtimepodcast@gmail.com 937-PETE-TIM
Pete & Tim celebrate the groundbreaking collaboration Getz / Gilberto, beautifully merging jazz and samba and creating multiple new additions to the classic American songbook. Fueled by the Brazilian cocktail of caipirinhas, your hosts explore the mysteries of jazz theory and the unbelievable talent of Astrud Gilberto, who makes her debut on this record. They finish things off with their cover of Só Danço Samba, a title that challenges the podcast medium's UNICODE support
Pete and Tim can't quite keep to their bi-weekly schedule, so Tim throws out an idea for a Singles episode - a fabulous cover of Send in the Clowns. Check it out! Getz / Gilberto coming soon!!
Alicia Keys' "Songs in A Minor" is one of the more impressive debut albums in recent memory. Sprawling and diverse, technical and emotional, this astoudingly emotional and funky record has a lot to dig into. Pete and Tim vow again to keep it tight, but in the end cannot help but take their time with all the amazing tracks on this fabulous record. They end the ep with a cover of "Lovin' U". twitter: @recordtimepod facebook: /recordtimepodcast gmail: recordtimepodcast@gmail.com VM: 937-PETE-TIM Next up: Getz / Gilberto
Record Time is all about celebrating the album. But sometimes, a particular single on an album really stands out. Record Time Singles celebrates the individual tracks that can be the gateway to listen to an exceptional album that is worth your time and energy. In the inaugural episode of Record Time Singles, Tim and Pete savor the many pleasures of the rich and fabulous "Mirrorball" by Elbow. Enjoy. twitter: @recordtimepod facebook: /recordtimepodcast gmail: recordtimepodcast@gmail.com voicemail: 937-PETE-TIM
Pete and Tim are at it again (yeah yeah yeah yeah) Talkin' 'bout an album by REM (yeah yeah yeah yeah) Vodka and tonic is their beverage of choice (yeah yeah yeah yeah) And at the end of the ep Tim will raise his voice (yeah yeah yeah yeah) twitter: @recordtimepod facebook: /recordtimepodcast email: recordtimepodcast@gmail.com PHONE: 937-PETE-TIM
Pete makes a new lifetime friend with Joni Mitchell's rich and sumptuous "Court and Spark", which Tim had known about for years. While Joni has long gotten mad props and praise for her contributions to popular music, it's another thing entirely to discover this incredible multi-faceted gem out of thin air. What an incredibly honest, personal yet sprawling accomplishment. Savor it while sipping your favorite sauvignon blanc, and stick around for Pete's ridiculously excessive cover of "Help Me". twitter: recordtimepod@ facebook: /recordtimepodcast email: recordtimepodcast@gmail.com
Pete and Tim put the record to the groove on The Low End Theory, the jam for all seasons by A Tribe Called Quest. Put this record on in any situation and it's banging. But on top of that, you've got layers and layers of artistry, craft and attitude to spare. Tim and Pete get into it all, and end with their attempt at a cover of "Excursions". Sip your favorite party beer while you savor one of the best and most important rap albums of all time. @recordtimepod on twitter /recordtimepodcast on facebook recordtimepodcast@gmail.com is our email
Rock is alive and well in the first episode of 2019, with Pete and Tim digging into Courtney Barnett's 2015 bombshell Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit. Courtney's mix of Dylanesque lyrics, Nirvana rock and Patti Smith cool is an awesome blend of influences and a great high-energy way to start the new year. Given Courtney's Australian roots, we pair the record with Fosters. We end the ep with a cover of "Illustration of Loneliness". twitter: @recordtimepod facebook: /recordtimepodcast email: recordtimepodcast@gmail.com
Saddle up and hit the trail for this epic story of love, loss, murder and (sort of ) redemption. Willie Nelson’s 18th record is a concept album straight from the prairie and from the deep traditions of country and folk music. Pete and Tim savor the incredible musicianship, subtle hubris and unique personality of Willie Nelson and his incredible band, and marvel at the legacy of Willie’s guitar, Trigger. We end the ep with a cover of "Hands on the Wheel". This record is paired with a drink you can use to brace yourself as you gaze at the far prairie horizon, Jack Daniels. At once sad, wistful, frustrated, and triumphant, Arcade Fire’s 2010 album is a monumental achievement in themes both musical and literary. Pete and Tim have lots to chew on with this ambitious and emotional drive through the outskirts of the city. Caught between childhood and adulthood, city and country, obligation and desire, the Suburbs deftly exposes the shared experiences of so many growing up on the cusp of the new millenium. Your hosts do not shy away from confronting all of it, even as it forces us to confront forgotten sides of ourselves, sides lost in the haze of time and experience. Our cover this ep is “Modern Man”, a song that maybe hits a bit too close to home for these two working dads. Sip a heady, local IPA (the localest you can find) while you listen. Something as bittersweet, murky and hard-hitting as the record itself.
Pete & Tim kick off Record Time season 1 with one of the biggest albums ever made. An obvious choice? Sure, but it's impossible to talk about great records without getting to Thriller at some point. So just what is it about this record that makes it so great? Is it just the timing of its release? The mercurial magic of Michael Jackson? Or is there some other alchemy in the mix? Is it possible to discover new joys in a record that's been played to death and back? Pete and Tim dig into it, and end the ep with a cover of "Human Nature". This episode is paired with the quintessential built-to-please, late-20th century malt beverage, Zima. Good luck finding it.
