In this episode, we take an in-depth look at Portishead's groundbreaking debut album Dummy, ranked #67 on Apple Music's Top 100 Albums of All Time. Released in 1994, Dummy helped shape the trip-hop genre with its brooding atmosphere, hypnotic beats, and haunting vocals from Beth Gibbons. We'll explore how the band fused elements of jazz, hip-hop, and electronica to create a dark, cinematic soundscape that still resonates today. From the eerie tension of "Mysterons" and the spy-film vibes of "Sour Times" to the emotional depth of "Roads" and the iconic "Glory Box," we break down each track and discuss what made this album so influential. Tune in for a journey into one of the most important albums of the '90s and how it continues to shape modern music.

This month's deep dive Listen Closely album is:Portishead - Dummy (1994)The debut album from the Bristol trio of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley was released during the summer of Blur's Parklife and Oasis's Definitely Maybe. Dummy was a darker, stranger record that would become a trip-hop classic that paired hip-hop, jazz, and electronic textures with Beth Gibbons spine-tingling voice and twangy tremolo guitars that belong in spy movies. The winner of the 1995 Mercury Music Prize, Dummy features the singles ‘Sour Times', ‘Glory Box', and ‘Numb', and is notable for it soulful turntable-sampling, melancholic film noir atmosphere. A modern classic indeed. We delve deep into how the band met, what trip-hop and the Bristol sound was, how the band got their name, how Dummy became hugely popular and a bit of a dinner-party LP ripe for sexy background music in film and more. The hosts of the Nialler9 Podcast (Niall Byrne and Andrea Cleary) present the Listen Closely series of listening parties on the Big Romance's warm Toby Hatchett soundsystem, featuring a focus modern classic album and a chat around it on the last Wednesday of the month. The Portishead - Dummy Listening Party happens Wednesday March 27th at The Big Romance. Thanks to Georgia Hallion for editing the podcast.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord communityListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistKEXP 25 year anniversary interview in 2019Dummy SamplesPitchfork's review by By Philip Sherburne Hosted on Acast. Crédits : Générique : Dr Alban "Sing Hallelujah" Titres écoutés dans l'émission : “Mysterons”, “Sour Times”, “Strangers”, “It Could Be Sweet”, “Wandering Star”, “It's A Fire”, “Numb”, “Roads”, “Pedestal”, “Biscuit”, “Glory Box”. Neneh Cherry " Somedays", DJ Shadow "Midnight In A Perfect World", Lalo Schifrin "Danube Incident", Isaac Hayes "Ike's rap II", Tricky “Hell is round the corner". Music heals the soul, as it always has, but not all healing is without scars. The new Sour Times album “The 11th Hour” is arriving timely and true to its namesake: Bursting with fury over the state of the world, it brings explosive and total rage to bear in an aggressive and melodic approach. It acts as an outlet against the rage we have all felt throughout the past year. 1.Rage Motivator4:14 2.Duality2:45 3.Dismay3:06 4.Obey3:06 5.Interlude0:51 6.Lily White3:49 7.The 11th Hour2:47 8.Death and Taxes2:36 9.Burn3:36 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brutally-delicious/message

Charlie (Natasha Henstridge) has her own struggles--depression, insomnia--plus a yearning to spill her guts on her internet webpage. Trying to find solace from her nightly sleeplessness, she gets a new job at the hotel Park West 113--formerly the Sliver apartment building. She soon finds entertainment during her late night hours by keeping tabs on the hotel guests--one of which has been keeping tabs on her, too (Stephen Baldwin). They soon start exploring the hotel--and each other--but both of them have ulterior motives. Who wins in a game of lust and seduction? Charlie is soon ensnared in finding the answer.

THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW Season 5, Episode 18 Over the weekend, I watched one of those really awful Troma flicks on YouTube. It was called Plutonium Baby (1997) and, well, I absolutely loved it. Then again, I have a thing for B-movies. This particular one inspired me to do another installment in our 'Doomed Cinema' series. Listen for an array of music as eclectic as Plutonium Baby itself (which neither features plutonium nor a baby). I even found a band named after the film and have chosen a pair of tracks by them to bookend this strange tale. PLAYLIST INTRO (00:00) 1.
