According to PSA Collectibles Authentication and Grading Service, this is the best podcast about Daft Punk and the 236th greatest album of all time, Discovery. Certified Mint! Some say self-awareness is a life skill. But I say that people who download an electronic music podcast actually want to hear stories about old guy behavior in the locker room, giving up on your dreams, and the retail crusaders cancelling REI memberships. We're also sure that all of you listeners from around the country are super pumped to hear about some St. Olaf nostalgia, including Friday Flowers, a perfectly unacceptable use of tobacco, cafeteria pranks, and Big Scary. At (1:06:00), the episode gets harder, better, faster, and stronger when we become the best podcast about electronic music, covering Daft Punk's second studio album. We discuss the inspiration for this album, Daft Punk's use of sampling, and the best songs that made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Playlist. Next week's episode will leave your blue eyes crying in the rain when we become the best Willie Nelson podcast and discuss the outlaw country album Red Headed Stranger.

Episode 307: It was 50 years ago this month that a 23-year-old Mickey Raphael felt his way through his first recording session with his relatively new band boss Willie Nelson. And it was no small thing, producing the iconic Red Headed Stranger. It was one event in a charmed life that set this Dallas musician on a path to the ultimate steady gig for more than 50 years, plus stature as the world's top on-call harmonica player. Raphael has played and recorded with Merle Haggard, Leon Russell, Don Williams, Emmylou Harris, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Norah Jones, Wynton Marsalis, and even U2 and Motley Crue. In a session taped at WMOT's East Nashville satellite studio, we talk about it all.
***This show is brought to you by DistroKid. Go to http://distrokid.com/vip/the500 for 30% off your first year!*** Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger perhaps is the strangest blockbuster country produced, a concept album about a preacher on the run after murdering his departed wife and her new lover, told entirely with brief song-poems and utterly minimal backing. On the 4th of July 2024, Pod Like A Hole is celebrating by uploading our discussion of Willie Nelson's The Red Headed Stranger. This concept album is a Sunday morning favorite in one of the hosts homes, and the boys seem to all agree that it's status as an All American Classic is no fluke. Willie bet on himself (and the talents of his sister Bobbi Nelson) and hit big. This is the 2nd and final episode in our Willie Nelson series. Remaining artists in this final season of Pod Like A Hole are Stevie Wonder and the Cure. In that order.
Willie Nelson is many things: a lover, a traveler, a Texan, a guitar player, smoker, outlaw, hero, poet, fashion icon, actor, activist, philanthropist, gunslinger, wiseacre, animal lover, brother, father, husband (four times over), Hellraiser, braids and beard enthusiast, but most of all Willie is a friend to all. In this episode of Pod Like A Hole the hosts discuss the life and times of WIllie Nelson. His brushes with the leaf and the law, his multiple wives, his work as a public servant to the people and animals of America, his collaborations that cross genres and his work with the other Outlaw Country Heroes, and how he manages to be a man that for 91 years and counting is still making music and along the way has become a friend to almost everyone in every walk of life. We find time to touch on 10 or so of his standout albums (couldn't get to all 100+ of his records), and in the next episode we will dedicate the recording to his masterpiece: The Red Headed Stranger.

Our first episode covering albums! First up, Julius gives Danny 2Pac's "All Eyez on Me." We'll talk about 2Pac's rough and rowdy ways that produced some of the biggest music of the 90's, both in terms of popularity and in sound. Being the first double album of rap, it is full of insane beats and collaborations with both legendary and underrated rappers. Julius also gets into how these sounds were always around during childhood and helped instill confidence in the face of bullies. Then, Danny gives Julius Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger." This album helped solidify Willie Nelson as one of country's biggest stars by finally carving his own path and creating his own sound. Danny discusses how this was the album that first sparked his Willie obsession. We'll also cover what Nashville was like at the time of its release and the crucial role of Willie's "little" sister Bobbie.Put together, these albums evoke discussions on the depiction of violence in music, the power of having a musical family to collaborate with, and much much more.Songs featured in this episode:All About U - PurchaseCalifornia Love (Remix) - PurchaseGot My Mind Made Up - PurchaseTime of the Preacher - PurchaseDown Yonder (Live from Woodstock 99) - WatchHands on the Wheel - PurchaseJust As I Am - PurchaseComing Up:Bonus Mini EpisodeEp. 4: SpringNoname - "Telefone"Allison Russell - "The Returner"Ep. 5: Party Soundtracks (Albums that can soundtrack a party front to back)Azealia Banks - "Broke with Expensive Taste"The Mavericks - "In Time"Follow us: Instagram Twitter Tiktok We'd like to hear from you - send us an email: thegmspod at gmailLeave us a rating and review if you want to!Thanks for listening!

It's been a while, but we're back reading the three series/runs that we have been following (mostly) in order. In No Man's Land, both Batman and Jim Gordon make some choices that definitely won't come back to bite them on the butt. In the Morrison run, they investigate ethics in vigilantism and Jason Todd's hair color. And in Injustice, well, things still find a way to get worse. Content warning: This episode was recorded a month ago, and the opening contains a lengthy discussion about problematic creators, a topic that feels especially sensitive after events of the past week, as well as discussions of child endangerment, homophobia, transphobia, and suicide. This week, Willie's first-born, daughter Lana Nelson, talks about one of the songs her dad used to sing to her at bedtime, “Red Headed Stranger,” calling his breakthrough 1975 recording of it one of the first times an album of his sounded the way he did at home. From there she'll walk us through some wonderful family history...like dodging rent-hungry landlords during the lean years, her dad's hog farm/commune outside Nashville through the RCA years, and the session with Merle Haggard that produced “Pancho and Lefty.”

This week, Nashville super-producer Dave Cobb, whose work with some of the true artists in modern country music—Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlisle, Jason Isbell—has earned him nine Grammys, talks about “Time of the Preacher.” It's the overture/aria to Willie's classic Red Headed Stranger, an album that Dave calls a beautiful, barren landscape, and it gets him thinking about Pink Floyd, the real definition of “outlaw,” and the most important instrument an artist can take into the studio: A belief in themselves.
Our guest this week is so renowned that Ted Koppel recently interviewed him for CBS's iconic news program "Sunday Morning" with Jane Pauley, an appearance that you can catch this coming Sunday! TJ2 esquire is not only a highly decorated journalist, but a former country music disc jockey, master griller, college football authority and... reformed troll! This week, this man of all seasons joins us in the chat lab for the first of two parts breaking down the birth of the "Outlaw" movement in country music, a revolution clearly led by two records by country music legends Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. In this week's installment we thoroughly dissect Willie Nelson's 1975 classic "Red Headed Stranger"! Chet Flippo of Rolling Stone magazine once listed this and the album we will break down in part two, "Honky Tonk Heroes" the two greatest country music albums of all time. Happy Birthday Willie
Broke and depressed, Willie Nelson almost joined the 27 Club on a snowy Nashville street late one night – before he'd even sold a single song. He drank, smoked, and cheated his way through multiple marriages. He was nearly beaten to death by an angry husband in a parking lot. He wielded a shotgun and a rifle during a shootout on his own property. And after ten years of trying to make it on Music Row, he had the courage and the confidence to start all over again after a fire threatened to destroy the world he was living in. Willie Nelson is a world-renowned musical legend, but in Texas, he's something more: a beloved native son and benevolent elder who's brought countless new talents into the family fold — often during the famed Luck Reunions at his ranch outside of Austin. As Willie's 89th birthday neared, Luck Presents, the entity creating those events, and Bruce Robison, the singer-songwriter, producer and force behind all-analog record label The Next Waltz, wanted to celebrate his influence and impact with a Texas-sized party. On May 1, 2022, Sheryl Crow, Nathaniel Rateliff, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Margo Price, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Vincent Neil Emerson, Shinyribs, Emily Gimble and Robison serenaded their inspiration with songs plucked from the greatest canon in American music. Fortunately, Robison rolled tape. The result, One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz's Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger, will be released on April 28, 2023 — one day before Willie turns 90. We talk with Bruce Robison about the selection process between song and artist, and the end result of this collaboration honoring the red headed stranger known as Willie Nelson. www.newwestrecords.com © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. This week we welcome Terry Johnson as Willie Nelson! Don't tell Terry Johnson that dreams don't come true. Just a country boy from Tyler, Texas, Terry spent his childhood in Texas and Arkansas, fishing, messing around on boats, and working hard at school. He earned an MBA from Texas A&M and went on to build a successful career in the technology industry. In the summer of 1973, before his sophomore year at college, Terry was working as a carpenter's assistant at a golf club outside Austin. One night after work one of the golfers knocked on his trailer door. It was Willie Nelson himself. The Red-Headed Stranger passed on a few tunes, playing songs for Terry for almost two hours on one of his road guitars, an old National. Ever since that summer night, Terry has been Willie's #1 fan. He would go on to sing those same songs thousands of times, practicing Willie's signature, soulful baritone for friends and family and, eventually, around dark and smoky karaoke bars in Northwest Arkansas. He would hold on to that National guitar for the rest of his life. One night last winter, at a spot outside Branson, Missouri, a Legends in Concert associate heard Terry sing Always on my Mind and walked over to his table. “Who are you?” He asked. “ Nobody,” said Terry. “Man, I have never heard anyone who sounded exactly like Willie Nelson before. I'm with Legends in Concert and you really need to come in and audition." Things happened pretty fast after that, and the next thing Terry knew he was given the opportunity to perform at Legends as Willie. This marked an important new chapter in Terry's life: fulfilling a lifelong goal of making people happy singing their favorite Willie songs — and in front of a real audience. Here's to the Legends in Concert team that believed in a 67-year-old retired businessman who just so happened to sing like Willie and had always wanted to do it in front of an audience like you! Legends in Concert is located along the famous 76 Strip and has been a part of the Branson entertainment scene over two decades. Two power- packed hours of fabulous entertainment awaits you! This world famous live tribute show features an amazing cast of all-star entertainers assembled on one stage in one of the most sought after productions in the world. Don't cross him, don't boss him! We're screaming like a panther in the middle of the night this week with Willie Nelson's career-defining classic, Red Headed Stranger! This 1975 concept LP was mistaken for a demo when record execs first heard it, but hits like Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain and Remember Me helped cement its legacy. We'll follow the Preacher on a redemptive journey full of love, lust, and murder, all the way from Blue Rock to Denver. We'll also talk about Willie's hitchhiker lifestyle, his creative use of a barf bag, and the time he was accused of murder as we sail O'er The Waves on Spin It! Red means many things to many people, from love to KFC to the sock you left in a load of whites that one time. Red coats the Bible as well, from Esau's “bowl of that red stuff” to the rider on the red horse to the blood of Jesus. This week we cover the messages God circles in red; the red lights that signal go instead of stop; the red-headed preacher and killer who became a country music legend; and how Russian Communists tried to destroy religion but left enough behind to inspire a terrific board game.Hal Hammons is the preacher for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. The guys have Chris Jewett back for a guest host as they finally get around to wrapping up Season 3. Discuss the highlights for them for this season. Chris forces them to offer up the albums the guys had a hard time listening to as well. They discuss some of their guests and their choices and somehow end up discussing Blackberry Smoke's Stoned and Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. As always, when Chris joins us, wackiness ensues!
Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Jesse Walker. Jesse is books editor at Reason and author of two books, The United States of Paranoia and Rebels On the Air. He can be found on Twitter at @notjessewalker.Jesse's Music Pick: Willie NelsonIn Part Two, we pick up Willie's story at his commercial breakthrough, Red Headed Stranger (1975). This opens a window in which Willie records frequent number one albums on the country charts and often dents the pop charts with his records, as well. What's changed? Well, Willie stops writing music for himself for an awfully long stretch. It's somewhat ironic that his biggest successes in this era will come from other people's songs after Willie's writing helped so many artists move product in the years prior.Near the height of “Outlaw Country,” Willie takes a sharp left turn by recording an album's worth of compositions from the Great American Songbook. Stardust becomes a huge hit and allows Willie to do what he wants. Specifically, that means a series of tribute albums and duet albums in the late '70s.The '80s would bring a string of crossover hits like "On the Road Again," "To All the Girls I Loved Before," "Pancho and Lefty," and "Seven Spanish Angels.” Always on My Mind was a HUGELY popular album at the time but signaled the end of a certain creative era for Willie. He writes again on Tougher Than Leather to mixed returns and the rest of the decade would see occasional hits among a plethora of releases. The 1990s kick off with Willie's tax trouble and a pretty great release meant to raise money to pay back the government. We dive into Who'll Buy My Memories and other highlights from an interesting decade of music, with Across the Borderline, Moonlight Becomes You, Spirit, and Teatro (with Daniel Lanois producing) among his best work.Willie has continued his firehose release schedule to this day, with a new album on the shelves just a couple months ago. We skim through the latter portion of his career, stopping to shine a light on a few of the more worthwhile albums.Over two parts and more than six hours, we hope to give both die-hard Willie fans and those new to the artist an overview of what made him so great.
This week we welcome Terry Johnson and Kentucky Just Us! Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Jesse Walker. Jesse is books editor at Reason and author of two books, The United States of Paranoia and Rebels On the Air. He can be found on Twitter at @notjessewalker.Jesse's Music Pick: Willie NelsonSure, in the past here on Political Beats we have dabbled in country-ish music. We've dipped our toes in the water of alt-country and country rock. But this, friends, is a full-fledged belly flip into the world of COUNTRY. Welcome to Willie Nelson, Part One. The show may never be the same.In Part One, we take Willie from his early songwriting days up through Phases and Stages. That's right -- it's 3+ hours and we don't even get to Red Headed Stranger. That's how much we have to say about Willie. We discuss much more than the music in this one. For example, we ask why country music's greatest albums are not considered among popular music's greatest as well? Why do we cabin them off to one side? How should we consider the songwriter versus the performer? Why would someone like Willie, early on at least, successful at one but not the other. And the voice. The delivery. What makes Willie truly Willie? From Liberty to RCA to Atlantic, all of Willie's record labels are represented on the show. It's a straight-up crime that some of these records aren't routinely listed among the greatest American albums of all-time. However, that's the silo country music finds itself in, at times. We try to bust through that silo. It's an exciting mix of styles and eras with entertainment and information for newbies and hardcore fans. Relax in any way you see fit, grab a bit of yesterday's wine, and be amazed at how time slips away when you listen to Political Beats. You can even stay in your underwear, if you like.
This week, in the third installment of OBW's special, Live from Luck! mini-season, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Steve Gunn discusses the penultimate track on Red Headed Stranger, “Hands on the Wheel.” It's the song with which Willie wraps up the RHS narrative, when his roaming, vengeful preacher finally finds love and a home. And Steve, who first made his name as a virtuoso guitarist, focuses on the way Willie used subtle guitar-picking to bring the story to a ruminative, peaceful end...before getting into where he hears Django Reinhardt's influence on Willie's playing and why Trigger sounds like no other guitar in the world.

Yes, you've heard plenty of concept albums from rock and rollers, but what about country? In 1975, Willie Nelson took it upon himself to respond to rock music's "Sergeant Pepper"s and "Tommy"s with his own protagonist on a journey. However, with Willie's "Red Headed Stranger", we got a much less fantastical, and much more harrowing western tale, rife with betrayal, murder, and eventually redemption. There's a very clear character arc and the story is pretty easy to follow, but there's something different about this concept album. It's almost entirely covers. Somehow, Willie was able to take pre-existing and historically significant songs and form them into a coherent story that sounds entirely his own. It's truly one of the most impressive concept albums we've tackled. This episode has Brad, Jon, and Jake! This episode looks at Willie Nelson's concept album of 1975, Red Headed Stranger. The first segment explores the interest in murder as a topic within country music--particularly examining the tradition of the murder ballad. The second segment examines the 1870 court case of McFarland vs. Richardson, concerning McFarland's murder of his ex-wife's new fiancee. This segment addresses the "unwritten law" that exonerated husbands killing their wives' seducers, the temporary insanity plea, and the changing position of the woman with respect to independence at the end of the 19th century. The third segment turns to Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger as the quintessential country concept album, his role as creator on an album that mostly consists of covers, and the way in which murder is depicted and justified within it.

How do you land a gig with one of the icons of American music and keep it for 45 years? Ask todays guest- Mickey Raphael. Unless your name is Keith Richards, I don't know anyone who has had a gig for as long as he has, much less on harmonica. Mickey is one of the best harmonica players on the scene and has been a member of Willie Nelson's band for over 4 decades. Besides all the great gigs with Willie, along the way he also recorded and performed with most of the greats- I'm talking about Neil Young, Leon Russell, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and it goes on and on. In the interview we discuss his early years, how he landed the gig with Willie Nelson, recording on legendary records such as “Red Headed Stranger”, "Stardust" and "Teatro", how he got the gig with Willie, Miles Davis stories, a funny Willie/ Hells Angels story, his influences, session work, working with Daniel Lanois, solo records, some jamming here and there and much more. When I worked at Texas Monthly magazine, there was no surer way to capture a reader's attention than to put Willie Nelson on the cover or in the headline. It seems WIRED's version of the Red-Headed Stranger is one Elon Musk. This year, the Tesla CEO (probably better known as a hat salesman) finally launched the car company's Model 3 and unveiled an electric big rig to much fanfare—and to much interest of the WIRED audience. But it wasn't just Tesla dominating the headlines.
