Hey gang, a new episode for you all, but it's not an MMC one. As discussed before on an episode or two, Stu and Eric Mulder from Watch This Movie, are diving into the world of disco films.  Now this episode, along with the next 2, were previously available on the Youtube channel ONLY. As that Youtube channel is basically dead, we decided to rejuvenate these episodes, that we felt were too good to go to waste. Mulder has done some editing on them, there's a funky intro and outro, and the sound has been cleaned up as best we can. Anyway enjoy this fairly in depth, and lengthy (pun intended) discussion on BOOGIE NIGHTS.

“I'll show you every version of yourself tonight” In this episode, we delve into Taylor Swift's song 'mirrorball' from Folklore, exploring its themes of identity, reflection, and the performance of femininity. We discuss the significance of the mirror ball as an object that always shows a reflection. We also touch on the song's structure, the emotional nature of the lyrics, and the implications of the 'hush' in the chorus. It's a loaded episode that takes us to the societal pressures on women to perform and ultimately leads us to ask the question, “are we all mirrorballs?”   Subscribe to get new episode updates: aptaylorswift.substack.com/subscribe Stay up to date at aptaylorswift.com    ***   Episode Highlights:  [01:15] How we do a deep dive [01:33] What is a mirrorball? "Girls go out and have your fun, then they hunt and slay the ones who actually do it." What does it mean to view Taylor Swift's music through a feminist lens? On this week's show and tell episode, we look at three songs from the lens of Feminist Theory—"Mean," "Nothing New," and "Mirrorball"—to examine how they critique patriarchal expectations, the limitations placed on women, and the struggle for self-definition. From the societal obsession with youth and likability to the emotional labor of constantly adjusting to fit in, this discussion unpacks the deeper layers of feminist literary criticism embedded in Swift's songwriting. Everyone knows that Seattle is Pearl Jam's hometown city, but just like Chicago is a hometown city for Eddie Vedder, so is San Diego. Not just that, but it extends to both Mike McCready and Matt Cameron as well. So any time that the band gets to travel to San Diego, there's no doubt that you're in for a special show. In 2006, that's exactly what happens. The band played with their pants on fire and every song had high octane energy as the hometown crowd was treated to something special. The main story from this show took place at the top of the encore where Ed paid tribute to his former drama teacher, a man named Clayton E. Liggett, who Ed had a theater created in his name. He told the story about finding out the night he passed away during the Mirrorball sessions. After hearing of the news, he went back into the studio and started to strum his guitar with the opening chord of what would become Long Road. We'll talk about how important this moment was when looking back on the history of this band, and we'll also share our own personal stories of how teachers have impacted our lives. There are so many ways we can all connect to Ed, and this story is transcendent due to his vulnerability in sharing that. There are also some big time performances at this show. The first four songs of this show from Oceans to Brain Of J. set the bar incredibly high for the night, and then incredible performances to follow such as Even Flow, You Are, Satan's Bed, Inside Job, Rearviewmirror with a Life Wasted inspired improv, Crown Of Thorns, a big time Alive solo and the debut of Big Wave. We'll spend the episode discussing which 2006 shows best define this era and if this show deserves to be in the conversation. Is this a candidate for the Live On 4 Legs hall of fame? We are celebrating The Golden Girls and Disco! The masterful creative output of the 70s and 80s continues to inform and inspire! Diving deep to illuminate this point are coffee table book couple, Jim Colucci and Frank DeCaro. Jim's book, Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind The Lanai is packed with hundreds of exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes and never-before-revealed stories, more than two hundred rare photos, Golden Girls sets, fashion, memorable quotes and more.Jim tells us about The Rule of Four, led by Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia that's become a sitcom template. He shares the secret formula to Golden Girls' success. Great writing x phenomenal performances. We address what fueled the Betty/Bea personality clash, and we learn how Maude, Soap and a skit promoting NBC's new 1984 programming sparked the conception of a show about women of a certain age that  changed friendships, social norms, and how we view cheesecake, forever.Frank's book, Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror Ball, is a comprehensive guide to the queer, club music that became a dance sensation, a fashion craze and a mainstream lifestyle. Gay men and black women created the driving rhythms of Disco music and dancing, but white men, like the Bee Gees and Travolta, carried it on a shimmering wave through middle America. Studio 54's denizens were draped in skimpy haute couture while the masses were obsessed with themed merchandise, examples of which have become iconic pieces of modern kitsch. We also hear about Frank and Jim's meet-cute, Jim's first journalism assignment at a mobbed (never pardon our puns) Soprano's casting call, and the conversation doesn't end until it reaches its logical conclusion: the Nancy Walker factor. In recommendations --Weezy: The movie Dreamin' Wild on HuluFritz: The documentary, Ladies And Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music on PeacockPath Points of Interest:Jim ColucciGolden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind The LanaiJim Colucci Amazon Author PageJim Colucci on InstagramFrank DeCaroFrank Decaro on WikiFrank Decaro Show Facebook GroupFrank Decaro on InstagramDisco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror BallFrank Decaro Amazon Author PageDreamin' Wild - HuluLadies And Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music - Peacock

Well, I'm pleased to say that author Frank DeCaro did not disappoint! We caught up to chat about the lost legendary Chicago space Dugan's Bistro, a gay discotheque that was a cornerstone of his coming-of-age years, and Frank was so generous in sharing stories of friendships, wild nights, and finding himself in the midst of it all. What I really loved about this conversation is that Frank is just unapologetically himself, and from the sounds of it, his coming out was refreshingly joyous, exciting and celebratory, and it's really nice to be reminded that it can be that way. There are plenty of milestone anniversaries in Pearl Jam history that we have to celebrate in 2025 - the 25th anniversary of the Binaural tour and the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Canadian leg come to mind, but one of the big anniversaries that we'll be digging into this year is the 30th anniversary of the legendary 1995 Vitalogy tour. This was a year of classic shows and moments from places like Red Rocks and Soldier Field, and in this episode we'll cover the show that kicks off a big year of touring - a Vote For Choice show in Washington DC. There are so many storylines that we have to cover in this one because of all the events that were happening in Pearl Jam's world at the time. There's the scarcity of tickets for this show where you had to send in a postcard to the Ten Club just to enter a lottery, Self Pollution Radio was broadcast a few days prior to this show happening that gave the audience a sneak peak as to how those Vitalogy songs that were all played on the Vs. tour were gonna sound polished up. This is considered to be the first show where Jack Irons is an official band member, and perhaps the biggest storyline is Neil Young's involvement and this stretch of shows ultimately leading to the recording of the Mirrorball record. This show will end with Neil joining the stage to play their first ever version of Act Of Love days after Neil played it with Crazy Horse at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame induction. We'll talk about how important that record was for the band and how Neil's influence has stuck with the group ever since. In today's episode we're joined by Brian Horwitz from the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, and we'll get to talking about the circulation of this bootleg and some of the other popular 1995 bootlegs, and we'll discuss what boots were must owns once everything digitized in the 2000s. My guest this week is pop culture writer Frank DeCaro, whose latest book is Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania under the Mirror Ball. Frank grew up in disco's heyday, which he experienced through teenage disco parties in the New Jersey suburbs. He also experienced the anti-disco conspiracy that sent the genre into a sort of musical witness protection program for the following decade or two. We talked about the conspiracy among music critics to suppress disco in the ‘70s — and why disco's outlived those who tried to squash it.Also, just a quick reminder — this month we'll be hitting the 500th episode of The Sewers of Paris! This is a series where we draw parallels and themes between two (or more!) songs from different points in Taylor Swift's discography. On the menu today is an evergreen connective tissue: Taylor's musings on fame, being replaced, and ageing. Initially, we were inspired by the mashup she performed for Stevie Nicks in Dublin. But as we got into our in-depth lyrical analysis, it quickly became clear there are more than just two songs to pay attention to. We delve into Nothing New and Mirrorball to flesh out our analysis and better understand how Taylor's relationship to the public eye has evolved but also stayed the same over the years. This week Derek is joined by Andres Artiles Jerrik, a stylist, designer, author, and TV personality. He spills all the tea about putting his talents behind Denmark's most recent efforts in the Eurovision Song Contest. You'll hear him talk about his songwriting, which was displayed at this year's Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, Denmark's national Eurovision selection contest. Andres worked on the song Mirror Ball of Hope with musical artist Aura Dione. He shares how the song came to fruition and the inspirations behind its incredible stage presentation. Andres also worked with last year's Danish entry to Eurovision, Reiley, and shares his experience from a year ago at the main event in Liverpool. Derek and Andres discuss the ups and downs of Denmark's history in Eurovision and the recent criticism of DR, the Danish Broadcasting System, for their method of selecting a participant from Denmark. Fresh off the Season 32 Dancing with the Stars finale, Artem is on this show this week! He's back in Napa with the Garcia Twins, and to celebrate, Nikki & Brie pop open a bottle of wine to get the party started! Artem opens up working with Charity Lawson, seeing tremendous growth from her on and off the dance floor, her hard work, their standout dances from the finale, and what kept them out of the top two. Nikki & Brie truly appreciated what Charity brought to the show, the impact of the Freestyle Dance, and the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of the entire cast instead of trying to put down dancers they were not rooting for. And while Artem was on the dance floor competing for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy, Birdie, Nikki, Brie, and their mom were in the crowd talking it all. However, getting to LA was a wild experience for Brie, who was traveling with Birdie and Buddy, had to deal with delays, cancellations, reroutes, two airports, dogs, and ladders. Yes, ladders on the Tarmac! Nikki was certain that Artem and Charity would be in the top two at the end of the night and shares her thoughts on the performances and Artem gives his insight into the approach for the night, scoring, and audience expectations, his respect for the other contestants, and which pro Nikki and Brie want to see back on the dance floor next season! The day after the Dancing with the Stars finale, Artem, Matteo, Buddy, Birdie, Brie, Nikki, and their mom went to Disneyland for a magical day of family and fun. Matteo's new obsessed with rollercoasters, and Nikki learned something very important about the park: there is no Pixarland…yet. The kids loved seeing Mickey and Minnie and then Birdie got a special shout-out from Elsa, which made her day. This could be the start of a new family tradition, and The Garcia Twins are already talking about strategies for the next visit. To close out the episode, Nikki & Brie congratulate Artem for a phenomenal season, and they're all excited about what season 33 is going to bring, and maybe that could include a Brie/Artem collaboration! Follow Artem on Instagram!See Artem on the DWTS Live 2024 Tour!  Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! This week, two BIG episodes of The Nikki & Brie Show are dropping on your podcast feed, featuring conversations with two very amazing, very different women. For today's special Monday drop, Nikki & Brie welcome Ariana Madix from Vanderpump Rules on Bravo. After a difficult start to 2023, she's on top of the Dancing with the Stars leaderboard, launching a new cocktail book, opening up a restaurant, and not letting anyone clip her wings. The conversation kicks off with he very unusual way that Ariana learned she'd be joining the season 32 cast of DWTS and why she had to tone down her immediate reaction. She also dives into her love of Britney Spears and why she's so excited to dance the Rumba to “Cruel Summer” when she and Pasha hit the ballroom this Tuesday for Taylor Swift Night on Dancing with the Stars! And when you tune into Taylor Swift Night this week, look for Nikki in the audience! Nikki & Brie also talk to Ariana about her mindset when it comes to competition, becoming friends with the cast of the show, the support she's receiving from her friends, and the shocking pre-show routines that make her a little nervous before the cameras go live Tuesday nights on ABC, something Nikki certainly has some experience with. Ariana's also taking the world by storm as guest host on Love Island Games (one of Nikki's favorites), a restaurateur and gives Nikki & Brie an update on the status of Something About Her, the sandwich shop she's opening up with her Vanderpump Rules costar Katie Maloney in West Hollywood. There's also an in-depth conversation about her new cocktail book, Single AF Cocktails: Drinks For Bad Bitches! Ariana's also taking this time to spread her wings, learning to lean on her friends and family, and navigating her way through a difficult time to learn to love herself, her own body, and her independence after a time when her personal life made a lot of headlines and some sage advice for anyone else that's going through a breakup. To close out the conversation, Ariana shares what she's grateful for as Thanksgiving approaches, and we're grateful that Ariana joined Nikki & Brie this week on the podcast! Follow Ariana on InstagramGet Ariana's new book, Single AF Cocktails: Drinks For Bad Bitches Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail!Follow Nikki & Brie on Instagram and send Nikki & Brie a message on Threads! To watch exclusive videos of this week's episode, follow The Nikki & Brie Show on YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok!
