On this episode of #LatinosOutLoud, Rachel La Loca invites Filmmaker, Actor, Producer and friend Sofia Yepes over to hang in the backyard to kick it and talk about Sofia's latest film "The Low End Theory". They chit chat about her projects, as well as motherhood, and the two brave gals bond on a very deep and emotional topic they speak very truthful about. “The Low End Theory” is an official selection of the New York Latino Film Festival, NVISION Latino Film Festival, and GuadaLAjara Film Festival 2024. It won ‘Best Ensemble Cast' at the NVISION Latino Film Festival. Check out the trailer for The Low End Theory HERE The neo noir crime thriller follows a traumatized vet turned ‘Raquel Pacheco' (Sofia Yepes) money launderer who steals from her drug-dealer boss ‘Ulysses' (Eddie Martinez) to pay off debts owed by the beautiful but equally trouble woman ‘Giselle' (Ser Anzoategui) with whom she is having an obsessive affair. The film brings to life representation for Queer people, Latinx artists, and single mothers to the screen. The film also stars: Rene Rosado (ABC's “The Conners”), Scotty Tovar (“Empire”), J.R. Villarreal (“Landman”) and Sidney Flanigan (award winning Focus Features “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”). When not creating multi-dimensional projects in Hollywood, Sofia is equally committed to raising up the voices of single mothers and breaking societal norms. What started out as a podcast called ‘As a Mutha' which grew from anger at the unfair expectations of single mothers, has expanded into a community called ‘Sana Sana Single Mama' which now focuses on resources for healing for single mothers coming Summer 2025. Resources will include access to family lawyers, assistance with funds, therapy, retreats, and more. Sofia is also a certified Cacao Ceremony Specialist, engaging ancient Indigenous spiritual and healing practices. Sofia currently resides in Los Angeles and is a single mother to her seven-year-old son, Phoenix.

一般被认为早期的 Jazz Rap 歌曲是 “Talkin' All That Jazz” , 发行于 1988 年,来自纽约的 Stetsasonic 组合为了回击 James Mutume (Funk 乐队 Mutume 主创)对 Hip-Hop 音乐形式的的批评,旋律采样了 Lonnie Liston Smith “Expansions”;纽约组合 Gang Starr 1989 年首作 "No More Mr.Nice Guy” 中就有几首采样爵士乐的歌曲,这促使了导演 Spike Lee 邀请 DJ Premier 为他 1990 年的电影 “Mo Better Blues” 制作了电影歌曲“Jazz Thing”,这首歌对爵士大家们的致敬使它成为了 Jazz Rap 的经典代表;Gang Starr 的前三张可以被认为是 Jazz Rap,从 1994 的 “Hard to Earn”开始更加硬核;Gang Starr 成员之一 Guru 的 Jazzmatazz 系列,其中发表于 1993 年的 Vol.1 中不仅有当时拥抱融合爵士乐的前辈,也有同辈的跨界爵士乐手和 rapper;纽约集体 Native Tongue 在采样手法上跳出了以往 James Brown 的范围,重要组合 A Tribe Called Quest 从 1990 年发表首张专辑开始就成了 Jazz Rap 高水准的代表,1991 年的 “Low End Theory” 奠定了 90s 东岸说唱的美学,1993 年的 “Midnight Marauders” 更是在制作层面达到新的高度;推荐纪录片 “Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travel of A Tribe Called Quest” (2011)1992 年 Pete Rock 和 C.L. Smooth 的 “Mecca and the Soul Brothers” 是超越时代的制作水平,Pete Rock 制作风格的独特性;以局外人姿态进入 Jazz Rap 场景的组合 Digable Planets 两张专辑都是我们的爱,1993 年的 “Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space” 明显体现出 Butterfly 特立独行的抽象哲思和采样上的想法,1994 年的 “Blowout Comb” 主题更多围绕黑人民族主义主张;来自费城乐队形式的 The Roots 的 “Organix”(1993)和 “Do You Want More?!!!??! Dream Warriors “And Now the Legacy Begins” (1991) , Brand New Heavies “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1” (1992) , 英国 Us3,法国 MC Soolar, Soon E MC,制作人 Jimmy Jay;02. Episode Playlist:A Tribe Called Quest - “Scenario”Stetsasonic - “Talkin' All That Jazz”Gang Starr - “Jazz Thing”Gang Starr - “The Place We Dwell”Guru - “Loungin'" ft. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 9, 2025 is: excursion ik-SKER-zhun noun Excursion refers to a trip, and especially to a short one made for pleasure. Excursion is also often used figuratively to refer to a deviation from a direct, definite, or proper course, and often in particular to a digression. // Some of Maya's most cherished childhood memories are of fishing excursions with her grandpa. // Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking Glass is an excursion into a fantastical world where nothing is what it seems to be, and everything appears to be what it is not. See the entry > Examples: “… in the late sixties, he [Miles Davis] abandoned acoustic jazz altogether, moving to the easy/uneasy blend of jazz and rock that would cause consternation among jazz purists and come to be known as fusion. Then, in 1975, plagued by profuse health problems and addictions, he left music altogether, not to return until 1981. Audiences and record buyers welcomed his comeback, though jazz's zealous gatekeepers continued to fret about his stylistic excursions and commercial aspirations.” — James Kaplan, 3 Shades of Blue: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and the Lost Empire of Cool, 2024 Did you know? A Tribe Called Quest's 1991 album The Low End Theory is not only widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, but one of the genre's most successful early excursions into jazz, utilizing samples and even featuring legendary bassist Ron Carter on one song. Excursion refers to a usually brief, pleasurable trip, and is often used figuratively—as in the previous sentence—for metaphorical trips outside of one's usual territory, be they artistic or otherwise. The word comes from the Latin verb excurrere (“to run out” or “to extend”), which combines the prefix ex- meaning “out of” and the verb currere meaning “to run.” Although it is sometimes used to refer to attacks or raids made against an enemy, as in “military excursions,” excursion is mostly used today for much more enjoyable jaunts, junkets, and rambles. Accordingly, on your next excursion, whether to the park, beach, or elsewhere, you could do worse than to queue up The Low End Theory on your playlist. The album's first track, after all, is titled “Excursions.”

697 A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
Here we go, yo! It's been a while since this podcast has covered either a hip-hop album or a jazz album — so this week, we're doing both at once! A Tribe Called Quest formed in the late ‘80s in the New York City neighborhood of St. Albans, Queens, which was home to some of the giants of jazz, blues, and funk, and was a hotbed of musical activity in the years when hip-hop was simmering into existence. On Tribe's 1991 album The Low End Theory, members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed pay tribute to this rich musical legacy with an album that charted a new path for hip-hop by exploring its roots in bebop, hard bop, post-bop, all the other bops, and more. This album isn't just a classic – it's one of the sacred texts of the hip-hop genre, and it helped Rich get into jazz after years of failed attempts. So if you're a jazz aficionado who's on the fence about hip-hop, or vice versa, we invite you to crank up the bass and check the (discord and) rhime with us. Just watch out for the dungeon dragon!Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Mike DeFabio, Phil MaddoxComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/149-a-tribe-called-quest-the-low-end-theory-1991Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

Hey everyone, This week we hit our second A Tribe Called Quest Album and we pretty much become the best podcast about Midnight Marauders. We are talking USA up all night, Jock Jams, and the time Rob went to Military School. Aaron talks about Rucking and Rob talks about talking about getting horny. Everyone thinks its normal that Aaron orders messed up stuff at the ball game and we go over the insane music choices our nephews are making. Then we go over Midnight Marauders and talk about how this album is a little more grown up than Low End Theory but still fun. Then Rob talks about talking about being horny again. Next week, we have Bjork with Homogenic and no one will get sick during the recording of the podcast.
This week, we're dropping our first B-Side of 2024. A little quickie companion piece to episode 64, A Tribe Called Quest: Electric Relaxation. We didn't get a chance to talk about our favorite Tribe songs from each album during the episode, so you get to hear it now. We also drop our thoughts on which album that we think is better, The Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders. If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too.Sign up for our monthly newsletter, Liner Notes. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.

People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm". We go deep on a roadmap for getting your kids to rap music, from Sugarhill Gang to whatever is happening in the genre right now. How do you approach conversations about lyrical content, specific life experiences that aren't our own, and answer questions you never thought you'd have to answer (yikes.) Along the way we talk about A Tribe Called Quest's timeless masterpiece, The Low End Theory, and Jurassic 5's rap primer for white people, Quality Control. Plus, we build our rap album and artist hall of fame. Plus, what are we listening to this week? A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory Jurassic 5 - Quality Control Outkast - ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly, Good Kid MAAD City Jay-Z - The Blueprint, Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime Vol 2 (Hard Knock Life), The Black Album Tupac - All Eyez on Me Notorious BIG - Ready to Die Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) Madvillain - Madvillainy Nas - Illmatic Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, College Dropout, Yeezus Kali Uchis - ORQUIDEAS Sampha - Lahai
Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out. We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso. We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast. I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them." Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March. Enjoy the discussion. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio
Thavius Beck's story started in Minneapolis and led him to California, into the Golden age of Los Angeles' underground Hip-Hop culture through legendary venues like The Good Life, Project Blowed and Low End Theory. Emerging as a respected producer, emcee and electronic music performer, Thavius continued to walk the road laid out for him by his creativity, following it to Brooklyn and a new role as a teacher, now professor at the prestigious Berklee NYC campus. In honor of the release of his latest album, Untitled: Volume 1, we spoke with Thavius about his journey through music, the similarities between electronic composition and time travel, and the beauties of creating when there's nothing left to prove.Read more about Thavius Beck in Issue No. 14 of AphroChic magazine.

Paul heads into a deep dive into the transformative world of improvised music, where Anenon aka Brian Allen Simon shares his artistic evolution. From crafting beats in LA's vibrant Low End Theory scene to the raw, unedited improv of his latest work 'Moons Melt Milk Lights,' we uncover the emotional resonance that springs forth when production veils are lifted.Embark on a journey through the creative ebbs and flows that define a musician's life, as Anenon recounts his transition from a digital realm to the tangible immediacy of live performance. The quiet of the pandemic served as an unlikely muse, presenting Anenon with the time to refine his mastery of saxophone and piano – a path that culminated in an album unmarked by edits, a pure expression of presence and vulnerability.Moons Melt Milk Light is out now on Tonal UnionPresented and produced by Paul Hanford Paul Hanford on InstagramLost and Sound is proudly sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. The crew reviews A Tribe Called Quest's classic third album Midnight Marauders as it turns 30. Off the heels of their groundbreaking sophomore debut, 1991's The Low End Theory, the group rebounded to put through what many to believe to be their most cohesive work yet. After famously making the low end of bass their calling card and backdrop of the jazz sampled beats, the momentum continued with group member Q-Tip working with legendary engineer Bob Power to leave the resonant noise from their samples, creating a grittier and harder sound.Over 14 tracks, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg expertly spit and trade clever, biting and, at times, fun and hilarious bars. The album spawned two classic singles which stand out as the groups best: "Award Tour" and "Electric Relaxation", both which received heavy radio play and still are wildly popular today. 30 years later, this album is marked as a crown jewel of a trilogy of Tribe's first three albums and has been noted a keen sonic influence to the groups successors--in spirit and practiceVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders" Turns 30 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/a-tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders-album-anniversaryThe Daily Beat: 30 Years Ago, A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight " Changed Hip-Hophttps://www.thedailybeast.com/a-tribe-called-quests-midnight-marauders-turns-30The Grio: Symphonic Sampling: A Tribe Called Quest's 'Midnight Marauders" and Wu-Tang Clan's 'Enter the Wu-Tang"https://thegrio.com/2023/11/09/symphonic-sampling-a-tribe-called-quests-midnight-marauders-and-wu-tang-clans-enter-the-wu-tang/HipHopDX: A Tribe Called Quest Celebrates 30 Years of 'Midnight Marauders" with New Merchhttps://hiphopdx.com/news/tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders-30th-anniversary-merchSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising is a very personal and important album to us – in fact anyone coming of age in the mid to late 80s should have a special place in their heart for this music they created back in 1989. It was fun, it was creative and groundbreaking, it was everywhere. But unlike Paul's Boutique, It Takes a Nation of Millions or Low End Theory, Three Feet High and Rising was lost to time. It did not stay in the public consciousness to be rediscovered by later generations as the albums have been out of print and unavailable for streaming, and this is one of the tragedies for a group that was so amazing and influential. We have wanted to talk about this album since the very beginning of Three on the Ones and Twos, but there was always another that somehow took precedent. Then we heard the catalogue was coming back into print and would be available for streaming, and we got really excited again. But sadly Trugoy the Dove (Plug Two) did not get his victory lap, passing away less than three weeks before these albums were given a new life. Every person between the ages of 45 to 55 who grew up on these albums revisited a part of their childhood on that weekend of March 3rd, and we wanted to celebrate this album and a group that meant so much to all of us. Enjoy the episode!

It feels like you can't turn around these days without stumbling into a story that's a little unsettling about technology and how we're all living our lives in this post (sort of) pandemic world. Between Twitter dramz, TikTok explosions and the rise of AI, it's a lot. So, it's probably to be expected that we are talking about how technology is impacting romance novels. We're talking about texting, about FaceTime, about podcasting, and yes…even about robots. If you can use it to fall in love, there's a romance using it…and we're recommending a few we really enjoyed. You can still get tickets to Fated Mates Live! Join us on March 24 in New York City with Tessa Bailey, Andie J. Christopher, Mila Finelli, Adriana Herrera, and Joanna Shupe! Amazing stories will be told, many laughs will be had, terrific books will be on sale, and there will be a bar! Get tickets now!Our first read along of 2023 (soon! we promise!) is Tracy MacNish's Stealing Midnight—we've heard the calls from our gothic romance readers and we're delivering with this truly bananas story, in which the hero is dug out of a grave and delivered, barely alive, to the heroine. Get ready. You can find Stealing Midnight (for $1.99!) at Amazon, B&N, Kobo, or Apple Books.Show NotesThis New York Times article called When the Novel Swiped Right doesn't mention a single romance novel, of course. But don't worry. We've got you. Sarah wrote about tech in romance back in 2019 in the Washington Post.We are very excited about Ted Lasso season 3, which premiers on March 15, 2023. This is a very nice little teaser is a masterclass in character work, but here's the trailer. Also in the New York Times, this creepy article about interviewing the Microsoft Bing AI. Maybe that thing has love on the brain because Microsoft fed the AI a bunch of romance novels at some point. Seems legit. But then this New Yorker article came out and said that ChatGPT is just like a blurry jpeg, so everyone calm down.Match.com was invented in 1995, but it was the invention of the dating app a decade ago in 2013 that really changed the game. Everyone, time to reread Perfect. The pager situation was wild, but Sky Pager is a truly great song by A Tribe Called Quest, off of The Low End Theory, one of Jen's all time favorite albums.
