Jarvis Cocker from Pulp

Jarvis Cocker has had a dream run. As founding member and lead singer of Pulp, he hit the highest of the highs during Brit Pop in the 90s, before embarking on a solo career that was just as celebrated. A few years ago he published a different kind of memoir called Good Pop, Bad Pop, which visually catalogued his stuff and told his story through its memories. And within that was revealed the Pulp Masterplan, a manifesto by young Jarvis of what a band would look, sound, and be like. Much of it came true. You're about to spend time with one of the most charismatic frontmen I've met. But offstage, Jarvis Cocker is somewhat shy, reserved, and more than a little self-deprecating. It took me by surprise when we sat down in an old theatre in London's Shepherd's Bush. The Jarvis I'd grown up with, was different to the one facing me in Bush Hall. Settle in for a beautiful, funny, and poetic conversation about life, love and and endless obsession with song.Jarvis Cocker's song choices:1.The Cryin' Shames – ‘Please Stay'2.B52s – ‘Dance This Mess Around'3.Scott Walker – ‘It's Raining Today' 4.Judy Dench ‘Send In The Clowns' / Boys Town Gang ‘Can't Take My Eyes Off You' Jarvis Cocker Mash-Up [unreleased]5.Bob Dylan – ‘Isis'00:00 Introduction and Memorable Moments00:18 Jarvis Cocker's Career and Memoir01:04 The Charismatic and Shy Jarvis02:02 Music as an Escape03:51 The Take 5 Theme of Love07:12 SONG 1: The Cryin' Shames – ‘Please Stay'10:51 Childhood and Early Influences like The Beatles15:28 Sheffield and Moving to London18:16 SONG 2: B52s – ‘Dance This Mess Around'22:32 The Pulp Master Plan29:41 The Reality of Fame31:03 The Impact of Fame32:13 SONG 3: Scott Walker – ‘It's Raining Today'37:50 Pulp's Reunion and New Beginnings41:25 SONG 4: Judy Dench ‘Send In The Clowns' / Boys Town Gang ‘Can't Take My Eyes Off You' Jarvis Cocker Mash-Up [unreleased]42:00 A Unique Wedding Story44:37 Reflections on Love and Relationships46:58 Pulp's 2025 album More48:29 Glastonbury Performance: Then and Now54:06 The Magic of Live Performances55:54 SONG 5: Bob Dylan – ‘Isis'58:29 Final Thoughts and FarewellWatch Take 5 on ABC iview:https://iview.abc.net.au/show/take-5-with-zan-rowe

In the world of rodeos and circuses, when something goes wrong, you “send in the clowns” as a distraction. Today, many who are supposed to be the world's leaders and those in the media have reduced themselves to nothing more than a dangerous clown show. Bob explains why. Bob also begins a two-part segment on what is the real story behind Matt Gaetz and his stepping aside? It is a bizarre story that is hard to believe but true. Now, do you believe in this ministry? Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/gtCsGQ14nU0This lecture examines ‘Send in the Clowns', probably the most commercially successful song written by the revered Stephen Sondheim. Yet it confounds the expectations of a showstopper by being written for an actress of limited singing ability, the late Glynis Johns. This lecture reflects on how it works in the context the musical A Little Night Music and explores how it came to be covered by major singers including Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins and Sarah Vaughan. The Wild Robot grossed another $13.5M domestically, keeping a strong momentum in its 3rd week. Joker: Folie a Deux saw an unfortunate 81% drop in the domestic market with only $7M, making for the highest 2nd week drop of a comic book movie. Welcome to SUPERSTARS WEEK! This week I'm rebroadcasting my interviews with five Superstars: Judy Collins, Al Kooper, David Amram, Ron Carter and Oscar Hammerstein II. Judy Collins is an iconic Renaissance Artist and Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter with 55 albums and hit singles including Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” and Stephen Sondheim's “Send In The Clowns”. She has been a dominating force in social activism, as a filmmaker, author and as a keynote speaker. And she had one of the greatest songs of the rock era written about her - “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by Stephen Stills and Crosby Stills and Nash. In this wonderful interview we discuss her background and successes, including her artistic formative years in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s with fellow artists Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Richie Havens and Peter Paul and Mary, and she tells a few terrific stories. And we do a Double Songfest. In the first one we play and discuss several songs by other artists who she loves including Shawn Colvin and Joan Baez, and in the second one we play and discuss some of her greatest works. This is truly a “don't miss” episode. My featured song is “Stockbridge Fanfare” from the East Side Sessions album by my band Project Grand Slam. And the Republican Party was the first political home of many African Americans. But the contemporary G.O.P, led by former President Donald Trump, has introduced a new class of Black Republicans who command little respect within the community. What happened, and is there a place for Black Americans in today's or tomorrow's Republican Party? On today's episode of A Word, Jason Johnson discusses that with Clay Cane, journalist and author of The Grift: The Downward Spiral of Black Republicans from the Party of Lincoln to the Cult of Trump.  Guest: Writer Clay Cane Podcast production by Kristie Taiwo-Makanjuola You can skip all the ads in A Word by joining Slate Plus. Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, & a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism & steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Six decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work, & heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards & her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy's dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won "Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She's garnered several top-ten hits gold- and platinum-selling albums. Recently, contemporary & classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins. Judy began her impressive music career at 13 as a piano prodigy dazzling audiences performing Mozart's “Concerto for Two Pianos,” but the hard luck tales & rugged sensitivity of folk revival music by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger seduced her away from a life as a concert pianist. Her path pointed to a lifelong love affair with the guitar & pursuit of emotional truth in lyrics. The focus and regimented practice of classical music, however, would be a source of strength to her inner core as she navigated the highs and lows of the music business.
