For this week's bonus episode, we proudly present the first installment of a new series, Forgotten Melodies, which is all about folk music, featuring explorations of types of folk song and original recordings which put fresh spins on trad tunes! In this first episode, we are talking all about the seasonally-appropriate Wassail tradition, and are joined by our friend and collaborator Ben Harber, who, with Eleanor, delivers brand new versions of "Here We Come A-Wassailing" and "The Bottom of the Punch Bowl," talking through the song-types' musical features. If you're unfamiliar with what a Wassail even is, you're in the right place, as we're chatting through the earliest records we have, from Anglo Saxon drinking games to Geoffrey of Monmouth and Shakespeare weaving Wassails into the fabric of English Literature. But, while modern perceptions of Wassailing might relate hundreds of regionally varied folk songs to waking up apple orchards after winter, is that the purpose they have always served? Is there any difference between a Wassail Bowl and a Loving Cup?And why oh why, on a Wassail, do people pin bits of toast to fruit trees? As ever, we'll do our best to get to the bottom of these mysteries, and several others. All while trying to appease the Old Apple Tree Man, in the hope he might show us the way to buried treasure! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Enjoy two free western episodes of Fort Laramie A) 2/11/56 The Woman at Horse Creek w/ Raymond Burr B) 6/24/56 The Loving Cup w/ Raymond Burr Fort Laramie aired on CBS radio for just one season in 1956.  It starred Raymond Burr as Lee Quince, captain of the cavalry at Fort Laramie, on the Wyoming frontier during the 19th Century.  The fort had 400 troops in all but they had to keep their eye on a nearby Indian reservation with 4,000 Cheyenne camped there.  Producer/Director Norman Macdonnell saw Fort Laramie as “a monument to ordinary men who lived in extraordinary times” with their enemies being “the rugged, uncharted country, the heat, the cold, disease, boredom, and, perhaps last of all, hostile Indians.”  Men died at Fort Laramie: some died of drowning, some of freezing, some of typhoid and smallpox “but it's a matter of record that in all the years the cavalry was stationed at Fort Laramie, only four troopers died of gunshot wounds.”  The stories focused as much on atmosphere and mood as on violence and action.  Macdonnell made it clear to his writers that historical accuracy was essential to the integrity of the series.  Correct geographic names, authentic Indian practices and true military terminology was insisted upon. Macdonnell relied on John Meston and Les Crutchfield, his Gunsmoke writers, for the Fort Laramie scripts.  Vic Perrin was Sgt. Gorce, Harry Bartell was Lt. Seiberts and Jack Moyles was Major Daggett.  Supporting roles were voiced by John Dehner, John McIntire, Virginia Gregg, Parley Baer and Barney Phillips.

Hi all! With this especially stressful and busy holiday season, I need to take a short break from recording new episodes of Attendance Bias. A lot of work goes into Attendance Bias and, aside from each week's guest, it's a one-man show to put each episode together. I find immense joy in talking with guests, getting feedback from listeners, and of course listening to Phish. During the holiday season, there have been a lot of scheduling glitches and it's been difficult to produce the best episodes possible. So I've decided to take January to rest, regroup, and hopefully get some episodes recorded and in the can so that I can keep up the weekly schedule that so many of you have reached out to tell me that you enjoy. In the meantime, so many new listeners have discovered Attendance Bias over the past year or so. To keep up with a weekly schedule, I thought it might be fun to re-release previously recorded episodes as “Classic” Attendance Bias. I did that last week with the Tom Marshall episode, and I'd like to shine a spotlight on some episodes that I think some people may have skipped over and would enjoy during Phish's off-season before Mexico…if it even happens. My aim is to come back better than ever with new episodes beginning in February. I hope that you all stick around for a few weeks, spread the word, and continue to enjoy classic episodes of Attendance Bias. And just so we don't break on an awkward note, I'm going to leave you with a full recording of one of the best jams I've ever seen: “Reba” from December 30, 1998. This was the third show of my first multi-show run, and this “Reba” closed the first set. I could not believe how long the set ran. The whole first set was an hour and thirty minutes, and “Reba” was placed after what I assumed would be a set-closing “Loving Cup.” Enjoy this jam as Phish was and still is, the band that keeps on giving.

Remember during the April 3rd, 1998 show of the Island Tour when someone jumped onstage during "Loving Cup" before getting chased off by Pete Carini? And then the band teased Carini for the following "Antelope" and the rest of the tour? That someone was JoeJo.For today’s episode, JoeJo chose to tell us about “Loving Cup” from November 13, 1997 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Moreover, JoeJo was very gracious and happy to talk about his unplanned stage appearance at the Nassau Coliseum in 1998. I originally thought that the "Loving Cup" from the Island Tour would be the focus of the episode, but as we spoke, it became clear that the Nassau version and the version from Vegas 5 months earlier were inextricably tied together.More than that, Joejo was eager to talk about his love of Phish, his connection to Tigger, and how he escaped not only Pete Carini, but the Nassau Coliseum security. So let’s join JoeJo Casone to hear about “Loving Cup” from both The Island Tour and November 13, 1997 at The Thomas and Mack.

Karl Hambsch is the owner of the only certified organic winery in Virginia - Loving Cup Vineyards & Winery, outside of Charlottesville - and one of less than a handful of organic wineries on the entire East Coast of the US. Karl has been able to grow wine organically in Virginia because of a lot of hard, and careful, work. He has trialed over 50 varieties of grapes over the past dozen years to find varieties that have the characteristics and natural disease resistance to withstand the onslaught of fungi, mildews, pests and infections that are rampant in the hot, humid growing season of the Mid-Atlantic region.Because of his commitment to organic viticulture, Karl has had to basically replicate the process of natural selection in the Loving Cup vineyard for delicious grapes that are disease and pest resistant. This is a process that would normally take millennia, and resulted in the dominant European (Vitis vinifera) varieties we know today. At Loving Cup, Karl continues this process to find the most expressive grapes best adapted to his terroir, a process that will result in the grapes that future generations will come to know and love.  Karl's approach to growing wine is not for the faint-hearted, but it provides hope and an amazing example of the potential viability of organic viticulture everywhere. If he can do it in Virginia, then winegrowers in California have no excuse not to practice organic viticulture. In this in-depth interview, Karl explains his specific methods of grape variety selection for organic cultivation, his four-pronged approach to  making organic viticulture work - ideas that could and should translate to any grape-growing region in the world. We also discuss the immense challenges of growing grapes in Virginia, the fascinating possibilities that arise from growing hybrid varieties, PIWI grapes, the realities of having both your vineyards and your winery organically certified, and much more.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 7 we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series, to chat about the post-Jerry years. Focusing on the larger touch points between Phish & The Dead, we dive into Phish’s 1998 Island Tour, highlighting the April 3, 1998 performance from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. A high point for Phish, they’d just reinvented themselves stylistically throughout 1997, and then booked a surprise run of shows just a few weeks prior to dive back into the Eno-inspired atmospheric funk jams they couldn’t get enough of. A true turning point in the band’s larger history, The Island Tour marks the point where the party begins to consume the band, and the darkness that’s lingering will soon consume them. A celebration & an ominous sign of what’s to come, it’s a fascinating moment in their history. Opening with stellar jams in “Mike’s Song” and “Weekapaug Groove,” the band later focuses on intra-band communication in “Reba.” The second, however, is the highlight of the overall show. Running just four songs, it reads: “Roses Are Free -> Piper -> Loving Cup> Run Like An Antelope.” Particualrly in the “Roses” and “Piper” the band connects with such effortlessness that they sound pre-recorded. In the encore, “Halley’s Comet” leads into the second-ever stateside “Carini” before the rare “Tweezer-less” “Tweezer Reprise” closes the show.Steven and Rob focus on the energy that guided Phish throughout the 90s, highlighting the decisions that led to their 1997 reinvention, and how this run shifted the band towards their more modern incarnation with all its surprises and challenges. In addition, they discuss the legacy of the thoughtful groove-driven jamming that defined the era. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced by Brian Brinkman, and mastered by Matt Dwyer. All music composed by Amar Sastry, unless otherwise noted. Logo design by Liz Bee Art & Design. The executive producer of 36 from the Vault is RJ Bee. Please consider reviewing this podcast on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
