Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, it's time for another nautical That Was Then. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year is none other than Steven Spielberg's Jaws, a landmark moment in American film that permanently changed the shape of the industry, for better or for worse. It can be tough to view such a classic as a piece of craft unto its own, but Paul, Arlo, and super-duper special guest Eric Sipple do their best. The gang recounts the film's storied production, examines a young Spielberg's filmmaking technique, discusses Jaws' place in the Spielberg canon (particularly in light of The Fabelmans), and much more.   NEXT: That Was Then…this is sow. W/C 24th March 2025One of the great things about recording TFM is that I get to rack my brains and come up with an episode title that is also a song. You know the rules, the song title (where possible) must be pertinent to some of the themes of the week's episode, and I try and make it a song I have some history with.Clearly this week was going to be fairly easy, I mean how many song titles are there that contain the word 'Drive' (don't answer that, because it is quite a lot). But here's the thing, because this part of the TFM process is a bit of a gift that keeps on giving, the choice of REM has taken me back to Automatic For The People, and who doesn't need reminding of how good an album that is and how lucky we are to have it.What that means is that I am going to be giving it a spin over the weekend, as I contemplate the state of the nation finances and the sheer absurdity of the Testi app.Stay safe.Drive - REMTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.

R.E.M. spent the decade after Murmur growing steadily more successful, their popularity cresting with the 1991 #1 album Out of Time and its inescapable hit single “Losing My Religion.” But instead of going on an exhausting world tour like most bands would, R.E.M. went right back into the studio and recorded Automatic for the People, an album that defies rock star excess at nearly every turn. You probably know “Everybody Hurts” and “Man on the Moon,” which are still radio standards to this day, and with good reason. But even those songs were much more downcast and introspective than one would expect from a band at the height of their popularity. Automatic for the People is the sound of R.E.M. entering their thirties and taking stock of their place in both music and the world, and though it may take some time to sink in, John, Phil, Rich, and special guest Jeff Blehar all consider it one of their best albums. When Real Estate's fifth album The Main Thing was released to fairly mixed results, was it time for a reset? In a sense, yes. For band leader Martin Courtney, it was time to get back to songs. After all, without songs, bands are just jamming, right? He set the bar high too, inspired mostly by the 1992 R.E.M. classic Automatic For The People.Besides, you cannot call in a producer like Daniel Tashian without being able to play him songs of exceptionally high standard. For a start, Tashian produced Kacey Musgrave's modern classic Gold Hour, as well as writing a bunch of understated classics with his own band The Silver Seas. Consider then, that the batch of songs landing on the new Real Estate album Daniel were so good that Tashian (who co-writes with many of the artists he produces) only tinkered with them. And in doing so, hopefully gave each one a liberal sprinkling of his magic song fairy dust. “In terms of his input into the songs it was minimal. Daniel was more like a cheerleader in the studio. He's so fun - he'll be jumping around and hype you up - so it's much less daunting in the studio having him around. Graig Alvin mixed the record, and he's also won Grammy's too. We had high-powered people in the room”. Despite all this, Martin sounds surprised at the possibility of creating a classic album, although Daniel has the potential to be just that. What that means, in this day & age, is another thing entirely. Yet the band has been in classic album territory before, in 2014, with Atlas - songs from which brightened up daytime radio, found their way onto the biggest indie streaming playlists - and even landed that record on the Billboard top 40 and UK album charts. A decade on, with the music landscape much altered, the expectations for Daniel are less certain. In Courtney's own words “I know there is a good chance that it will come and go, like everything else these days”. But be assured that if you do become familiar with the record, it will pay you back dividends for a long time to come.So where does a band like Real Estate fit into the modern music industry landscape? Still in the game and getting better, the band's cultural caliber is steadily rising. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Katherine Yeske Taylor is our guest today on The Record Player and boy, this conversation was an absolute joy. We discuss her new book, She's a Badass: Women in Rock Shaping Feminism, which is coming out on January 16, but we also dig deep into a bunch of different topics.Katherine is a fellow music journalist who began her career as a rock critic in Atlanta in the 1990s, interviewing Georgia musical royalty such as the Indigo Girls, R.E.M., and the Black Crowes while still a teenager. Since then, she has conducted several hundred interviews and contributes regularly to Billboard, Spin, and American Songwriter, among others. She is a longtime New York City resident and is extremely active in the downtown rock scene. We talk a good amount of journalism shop -- including the many things and particulars that go into the craft of interviewing. Katherine also shares a lot of good Athens stories and tales of how music can intersect with life in some pretty cosmic ways.R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People weaves in and out of the discussion -- with some choice memories filtering through the songs and moments. If this episode doesn't make you want to visit Athens, you probably should think about visiting Athens. If there's any justice, Katherine's book will become a valuable resource  -- both now and in the coming years -- for anyone who wants to know the often difficult path that women in rock have traveled as part of the ongoing fight for gender equality.  Our thanks to Katherine for an inspirational, illuminating and entertaining discussion. We'll look forward to the next round!

In 2021, the world lost a passionate R.E.M. fan when Michael Iafrate passed away. Michael was an incredible individual who Ben had met at a conference after discovering their shared love of faith, justice, and music. Michael was described in his obituary as the following: Father. Partner. Son. Brother. Friend. Activist. Liberation theologian. Singer-songwriter. Musician. Magician. Artist. Vegetarian. Voice impersonator. Advocate. Bibliophile. Writer. Teacher. Student. Seeker. Punk. We share this conversation in his honor, joined by his friend, Scott Williams, who shared fandom of this band and this album with Michael. R.E.M.'s iconic album, Automatic For The People comes in at #96 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest albums of all time, and we can't wait to talk about this one in honor of Michael Iafrate. We hope you enjoy this conversation! We're all about trying new things on this here podcast. Thanks again to listener David Fryear for the suggestion to continue our Classic Albums Worst To First series that we started last year with The Songs Of Ok Computer Worst To First. This time we have our sights set on what is arguably the best album from the legendary R.E.M. - 1992's Automatic For The People. 2 of our beloved regulars Matt Dinan and Gabe Scalone return for Part 2 and the cream of the crop in picks 6-1. Our unflappable Worst To First formula has yet to let us down and the final list of these songs in their official WTF order is scientifically proven to be accurate, unless you disagree. Either way, please enjoy the amazing songs the four lads from Athens have given us and please enjoy what many consider to be R.E.M. in their absolute prime.  If you missed Part 1, please check it out first, as that's usually how these things work. They decided to make this new album to sound like nothing else contemporary and filled with non-R.E.M.-type songs. The result was this masterpiece filled with songs about, loss, death, mortality, transition and more. The album was a group effort with guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry using all sorts of instruments and sounds to make the music while songwriter and vocalist extraordinaire, Michael Stipe provided the moving vocals and lyrics to this essential album of the 1990's. Considered by many as perhaps R.E.M.'s best album, the album contains many of R.E.M.'s best songs, like Everybody Hurts, Man On The Moon, Nightswimming and Find The River and more. The album featured six singles and videos, which were played on MTV on heavy rotation. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs.
