In Deuteronomy 14:1-21 we have a section about clean and unclean food. Remember that in the Old Testament we have civil laws and religious laws. These laws about food are probably more civil. God was calling a people to be set apart. In verses 22-29 Moses writes about tithes.

In John 11 we have the really awesome account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Here we see that He has authority over death. In verses 1-16 we see Lazarus’ death. In verses 17-27 we see that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. In verses 28-37 we see Jesus’ emotions as He weeps. In verses 38-44 Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. In verses 45-57 we see the plot to kill Jesus.

In Deuteronomy 13 we have a chapter about threats of idolatry. Remember that Moses is calling a people to be separated from the world.

In John 10 Jesus continues to teach the people. Remember that John’s Gospel is different than Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John wrote much later than the other three Gospels and he focuses differently. He gives a different perspective. In verses 1-21 Jesus teaches about being the good shepherd. In verses 22-42 He teaches Theology and teaches that He and the Father are one (see verse 30).

In Deuteronomy 12 it seems that Moses begins his second or third speech, depending how we outline the book. The ESV Study Bible calls this the second speech and says it runs from Deuteronomy 12:1-26:19. Remember that Deuteronomy is a series of sermons, or speeches, which Moses delivers to the people before they enter the promised land. Deuteronomy 12 is about proper worship and the end of the chapter is a warning against idolatry.

In John 9 Jesus heals a man born blind. In the whole chapter we find discussion about this healing and the witness of the man. It is a somewhat humorous passage.

In Deuteronomy 11 we have a chapter encouraging them to love the Lord and serve Him with their whole heart.

In John 8 we have the woman caught in the act of adultery in verses 1-11. In verses 12-30 Jesus is teaching about being the Light of the world. In verses 31-38 Jesus teaches that the truth will set you free. In verses 39-59 there is more controversy over who Jesus is.

In Deuteronomy 10 Moses is still recounting the past, including how they got to the place they are at. In verses 1-11 Moses recounts how they received new tablets of stone. In verses 12-22 they are exhorted to circumcise their heart.

In John 7 Jesus is teaching at the Feast of Booths, also called the Feast of Tabernacles. In verses 25-31 the people were questioning if this could be the Christ. In verses 32-36 we see people trying to arrest Jesus. In verses 37-39 Jesus teaches about Living water. In verses 40-52 there is controversy within the people.

In Deuteronomy 9:1-10:11 we have a recounting of the Golden Calf incident.

In John 6 we have Jesus feeding the 5000. In verses 16-21 Jesus walks on water. In verses 22-71 Jesus teaches that He is the bread of life.

In Deuteronomy 8, the whole chapter, it is all about God’s gracious dealings with Israel.

In John 5:1-17 we have the healing at Bethesda. Then in verses 18-29 we have the authority of the Son. In verses 30-47 we have the witnesses to Jesus.

In Deuteronomy 7 we have warnings about not falling away They have an exclusive relationship with the Lord. Beginning in verse 12 we also have a section on the promises of God.

In John 4 we have the account of Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman at the well. Again, we have teaching on Jesus’ purpose and the love of God. Here Jesus goes to a woman who would be considered an outcast from society. This woman at the well had been married 5 times and now was with a man she was not married to. Jesus cared about her. Then, in verses 46-54 Jesus heals an official’s son.

In Deuteronomy 6 we have a strong passage exhorting the people to obey God and prosper. They are also exhorted to teach their children the Word of God.

In John 3:1-21 we have Nicodemus, who came to Jesus at night. This is a wonderful passage in which we find awesome teaching on the love of God and Jesus’ purpose in life. In verses 22-36 we see John the baptizer exalt Christ.

In Deuteronomy 5:1-21 the Ten Commandments are repeated. In verses 22-33 Moses intercedes for the people. Deuteronomy 5 begins Moses’ second speech. Remember that Deuteronomy is a series of sermons which Moses gives to the people before entering the promised land.

In John 2 we have the wedding at Cana, which is Jesus’ first miracle. Then, in verses 13-22 Jesus cleanses the temple. In verses 23-25 we see that Jesus knows what is in humans, meaning he knows our hearts.

In Deuteronomy 4 Israel is urged to obey God’s Law. Starting in verse 14 and going through 31 idolatry is forbidden. In verses 32-40 there are teachings that the Lord alone is God. In verses 41-43 we have a section on the cities of refuge. In verses 44-49 we have an introduction to the law.

In John 1 we have John’s introduction to the Gospel which he wrote. Notice how he begins going all the way back to creation showing how Jesus holds all creation together. In verses 14-18 we have the writing of Jesus becoming a man. In verses 19-34 we have writing about John the baptizer. In verses 35-51 we have Jesus’ public ministry and first converts.

In Deuteronomy 3 Moses reviews the conquests of certain cities. This goes back to the book of Numbers. The ESV Study Bible shares that this section recounts Israel’s second transjordan victory (see Numbers 21:31-35).

In Luke 24 we have Luke’s account of the resurrection. Beginning in verse 13 and going through verse 35 we have Jesus’ talk with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. In verses 36-49 we see Jesus’ other appearances. In verses 50-53 we have the ascension.

In Deuteronomy 2 Moses continues to review their wanderings in the wilderness. Notice that in verse 14 Moses says that they had been wandering 38 years.

In Luke 23 Jesus is tried and crucified. He is before Pilate (verses 1-5), then Herod (verses 6-12), then Pilate again (verses 13-17). Pilate orders Him crucified in verses 18-25. Jesus is crucified in verses 26-43. Jesus dies in verses 44-49. Jesus is buried in verses 50-56.

In Deuteronomy 1:1-5 we have a prologue to Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy is a series of sermons which Moses delivers to the people prior to their entrance to the promised land. In verses 6-46 we have the command to leave Horeb (Mt. Sinai) and a recounting of the events of the past.

In Luke 22 we have many of the events leading to Jesus arrest and by the end of the chapter Jesus has been arrested. This chapter includes Judas betraying Jesus (verses 3-6), the Passover meal (verses 7-23), Jesus’ prayer at Gethsemane (verses 39-46), and much more.

In Numbers 36 we have instructions about marriage with respect to female heirs.

In Luke 21:1-4 we see the example of the widow’s offering. In the rest of the chapter we have instructions about the destruction of the temple and end times occurrences.

In Numbers 35 we have the Lord’s instructions about the cities of the Levites in verses 1-8, then we have instructions about cities of refuge in verses 9-34.

In Luke 20 we are reading about things that happened in Holy Week. This is the week between Jesus’ triumphal entry and His crucifixion and resurrection. In Luke 20:1-8 we have the authority of Jesus challenged. In verses 9-18 we have the parable of the wicked talents. In verses 19-26 we have talk about paying taxes to Caesar. In verses 27-40 the Sadducees ask about the resurrection (they did not believe in the resurrection). In verses 41-47 we have more conversation with the Sadducees and Jesus’ warnings.

In Numbers 34 we have the boundaries of the land (verses 1-15), then we have the list of tribal chiefs (verses 16-29)

In Luke 19 Jesus is wrapping up His time in Samaria and His road to Jerusalem. Recall that in Luke 9:51-19:27 Jesus is in Samaria on His way to Jerusalem. In Luke’s Gospel We have 10 parables that Jesus will tell in Samaria and these parables are not in the other Gospels. In Luke 19:1-10 we have the account of Jesus and Zacchaeus while Jesus passed through Jericho. In verses 11-27 we have the parable of the Ten Minas. In verses 28-40 we have the triumphal entry. In verses 41-44 Jesus weeks over Jerusalem. In verses 45-48 Jesus cleanses the temple.

In Numbers 33 we have Moses recounting Israel’s journeys. I like how the ESV Study Bible shares that this is Moses’ testimony of what God had done for Israel during his lifetime. These sections are summarizing what we have read in certain placed in Exodus.

In Luke 18 Jesus teaches in more parables. We have the parable of the persistent widow in verses 1-8. Then in verses 9- 14 we have the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. In verses 15-17 Jesus invites the children. In verses 18-30 we have the account of the rich young ruler (not a parable). In verses 31-34 Jesus foretells His death a third time. In verses 35-43 Jesus heals a blind beggar.

In Numbers 32 we have the account of Reuben and Gad settling in Gilead. The ESV Study Bible shares: The conquest of the kings of Transjordan—Sihon and Og—was described in ch. 21. The high hills (2,500 feet [762 m]) of Transjordan made for excellent cattle grazing, so it must have seemed a good idea for some of the Israelites to settle there. The tribes of Reuben and Gad put their bid in first. However, since Transjordan south of the Sea of Galilee is outside the Promised Land, Moses is shocked by the request. He accuses the tribes of making the same mistake as the spies by rejecting God’s promises (32:6–15). The tribes of Reuben and Gad insist that they fully support the conquest of Canaan: their fighting men will head the invasion force and not return to Transjordan until Canaan is won (vv. 16–27). Moses accepts this compromise (vv. 28–32). The subsequent settlement of Reuben and Gad is summarized. Part of the tribe of Manasseh also settled in northern Transjordan.

In Luke 17:1-4 Jesus talks about temptations to sin. In verse 5-6 we have teachings about increasing faith. In verses 7-10 we have a parable about the unworthy servant. In verses 11-29 Jesus cleanses 10 lepers. In verses 20-37 Jesus teaches about the coming Kingdom.

In Numbers 31 the whole chapter is about vengeance on Midian. The ESV Study Bible shares: The Midianites were a group of nomadic tribes who inhabited the deserts on the fringes of Canaan. They were associated with the Ishmaelites, Amalekites, and Moabites. It is the Moabite Midianites who are the target here. Instigated by Balaam (v. 16), they had seduced the Israelites into worshiping Baal at Peor (ch. 25), so a brief but fierce military campaign is launched against them, for persuading Israelites to worship other gods is a capital offense, according to Deuteronomy 13. As the last campaign headed by Moses (Num. 31:1–2), this one sets precedents for the coming invasion of Canaan.

In Luke 16 we have more teaching on parables. We have the parable of the unrighteous steward in verses 1-13. Then, we have teaching about law and the kingdom of God in verses 14-17. Then, verse 18 is about divorce and remarriage. In verses 19-31 we have the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

In Numbers 30 we have teachings on vows. In verses 1-2 we have teachings about men and vows. In verses 3-5 we have teachings about women and vows. In verses 6-8 we have teaching about women and vows before marriage. In verse 9 we have teachings about widows and divorcees. In verses 10-16 we have instruction about woman and vows after marriage.

In Luke 15 we have more parables. We have the parable of the lost sheep (verses 1-7), the lost coin (verses 8-10), and the prodigal son verses 11-32)

In Numbers 29 we have more instructions on offerings. We have the instructions about the offerings for the feast of trumpets (verses 1-6), the Day of Atonement (verses 7-11), the feast of booth (verses 12-38), then we have a summary in verses 39-40.

In Luke 14 we begin with a healing and then more parables. We see the second healing on the sabbath. In verses 1-6 we have a healing of a man with dropsy. The ESV Study Bible has a note that says the man probably had edema where excess fluid gathers in parts of the body. In verses 7-11 we have the parable of the wedding feast. In verses 12-24 we have the parable of the great banquet. In verses 25-34 we have teaching on the cost of discipleship.

In Numbers 28 we begin to see the order of their offerings. We see daily offerings in verses 1-8, followed by sabbath offerings in verses 9-10, monthly offerings in verses 11-15, Passover offerings in verses 16-25, then the feast of weeks in verses 26-31.

In Luke 13 we have many other teachings and parables taught by Jesus. He ends with His lament over Jerusalem in verses 31-35.

In Numbers 27:1-11 we have instructions about the daughters of Zelophehad. They were mentioned before in Numbers 26:33. The issue is that his father had no sons to pass the land onto. So, they create a new rule for a father with no sons. In verses 12-23 we have instructions about Joshua succeeding Moses.

In Luke 12 Jesus continues to teach the people. Thousands were following Him. We have warnings about the Pharisees (verses 1-3); teaching about acknowledging Jesus, the Christ, before others (verses 8-12); the parable of the rich food (verses 13-21); teachings not to be anxious (verses 22-34); exhortations to be ready for Jesus to come back (verses 35-48); teachings about how Jesus divides families (This is not caused by Him, but caused by sin.).

In Numbers 26 we have the census of a new generation. This is because all those 20 and older were to die in the wilderness (Numbers 14:29), except for Joshua and Caleb. The previous census included those people who were going to die in the wilderness.

In Luke 11 we continue Jesus’ road to Jerusalem which began in Luke 9:51 and goes through Luke 19:27. Jesus is in Samaria on His way to Jerusalem. In Luke’s Gospel We have 10 parables that Jesus will tell in Samaria and these parables are not in the other Gospels. In Luke 11:1-13 we have instructions on the Lord’s prayer. In Luke 11:14-23 we have Jesus accused of casting out demons by the prince of the demons. In Luke 11:24-26 we have teachings about unclean spirits returning. In Luke 11:27-28 we have teachings on true blessedness. In Luke 11:29-32 we have the sign of Jonah. In Luke 11:33-53 we have instructions about the light in them and then Jesus pronounced woes on the Pharisees and lawyers.

In Numbers 25:1-9 we see the people worshiping the foreign gods and intermingling (sexually and maybe marrying them) with the foreign women. They are not supposed to do this because the foreign people would lead them astray. That is what happens here as well. They are worshipping Baal, the foreign god. Baal was a Canaanite fertility god. In verses 10-18 we see the zeal of Phinehas as he turns back God’s wrath.
