Let me ask you something... if your kids can't respect a stranger's back at Applebee's, why would you expect them to respect a boss, a marriage, or a nation?Today, we're tackling the lost art of discipline and respect and why laughing off bad behavior at the dinner table leads to chaos in the boardroom, in government, and in life. This episode may sting a little… but it just might be the gut check we all need. Let's dive in.”

Cities Church Sermons

John 7:25-52,Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,' and, ‘Where I am you cannot come'?”37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? 48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”It's a busy time of year! It marks the ending of one season and the beginning of another — and so there's a lot of excitement in the air! People are grateful for how God has provided in the past; they're hopeful for how God will provide in the future. And that of course is what the Feast of Booths is all about — that's what's going on here in Jerusalem in John Chapter 7.We saw the mention of “The Feast of Booths” last week in verse 2, but I want to circle back to it this week because it's vital context for our passage today. The Feast of Booths was one of the great festivals that God commanded for Israel in the Book of Leviticus. The people would build booths (temporary shelters) and live in them for a week to remember how God provided for them way back after the exodus, and how he continued to provide for them (see Lev. 23:33–43; Deut. 16:13–15).This feast would come at the end of the agricultural year — the seventh month — which is roughly September on our calendar. So for your imagination: the events of our passage today happened around this time of year.So picture this: Jerusalem is packed with people who've come from all-over for this festival; all the kids got on their new back-to-school clothes; and they're having a week-long party — except this year was different because the whole city is abuzz with talk about this man named Jesus. And we can catch the commotion here just by a simple reading — we heard about Jesus's brothers at the start of this chapter, and then we hear about “the Jews,” “the people,” “the crowds,” “some of the people of Jerusalem,” “the Pharisees,” “the chief priests,” “the officers,” “the authorities,” and finally “Nicodemus.”Now there's overlap in some of these groups, but John uses each of these different words to describe what's going on, and the impression he gives us is that there's a whole bunch of different people talking about Jesus. They all want to know who he is, and everybody's got their own opinion. So Chapter 7 is a cacophony of questions about Jesus, and he's right in the middle of it … and we are too. This is the brilliance of God's word. As the readers of this story, we know things that the characters in this story don't know. We call this dramatic irony — and John, who wrote this Gospel, is a master of it! John lets us overhear everyone's questions about Jesus, all while he's already told us the truth about Jesus — we have the fuller perspective, and John means to involve us! He draws us into this story as readers and he gives us a part — there are ways he expects us to respond. I wanna tell you three. For the sermon, I want to tell you three ways we should respond to the buzz about Jesus in Chapter 7. And here's what's at stake: if you do these three things, it will change your life. 1. Give Jesus a hearing. We're going to actually start with the ending. Everybody find verse 45. This is the last debate of the chapter, between the chief priests, the Pharisees, and the officers. We see that word “officers” a few times. Other translations call these officers the “temple guard” or even “temple police.” We should imagine them as basically temple mall cops. Their job was to keep things in order around the temple, but they didn't carry guns. And well, back in verse 32, the chief priests and Pharisees told these temple mall cops to go arrest Jesus. The Pharisees kept hearing the crowds talk about Jesus and they had enough, so they said, Go get him and bring him in. Now everybody look at verse 45: The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”The chief priests and Pharisees did not like this answer. The mall cops came back without Jesus, and their defense for why they didn't arrest him was: This man is different! We don't know the full details here, but apparently these guys got close enough to Jesus to take him, but they were enamored by his words (which is a good first step toward faith) — but the Pharisees weren't having it. They attacked these guys. Look at verse 47: The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”The Irony of NicodemusNow this is important — I need everybody to track with me here. In verse 47, I want you to see that the Pharisees are suggesting a contrast between themselves and the crowd — and we have to see the contrast in order to see the deep irony going on here. When the Pharisees ask if the authorities or Pharisees believed in Jesus, that's a rhetorical question (the implied answer is Of course not!).They're saying: The crowd might believe in Jesus because they don't know any better — they're a bunch of dummies! But we're smart! (That's my paraphrase.) Let me read you another paraphrase of these verses, to help us really see what's going on here. Verse 46: The police answered, “Have you heard the way he talks? We've never heard anyone speak like this man.” The Pharisees said, “Are you carried away like the rest of the rabble? You don't see any of the leaders believing in him, do you? Or any from the Pharisees? It's only this crowd, ignorant of God's Law, that is taken in by him—and damned.” (Verses 46-49, The Message)See what they're saying? That is all meant to set up verse 50. Everybody find verse 50.Okay, somebody tell me the first word in verse 50 … Nicodemus!Interesting! We know who he is! We met Nicodemus back in Chapter 3. John tells us in John 3:1,“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.” Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler, which were different. There's historical evidence that confirms that Nicodemus belonged to an extremely prominent Jewish family in the First Century. They had incredible wealth and aristocratic influence — in almost every worldly metric you could imagine. Nicodemus was a big deal. And in Chapter 3, he came to Jesus one night, in private, with a bunch of questions. And Jesus told him that you have to be born again by the Holy Spirit, and he told him that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus said that to Nicodemus, but then Nicodemus disappears from the story. We don't know how he responded … he doesn't show back up until now, in Chapter 7, verse 50. So catch this:The Pharisees say: Look, knuckleheads! You don't see any of us Pharisees believing in Jesus do you?The next verse starts, “Nicodemus …” Verse 50,Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”This is the most reasonable sentence spoken by any of the characters in this chapter. Nicodemus says, Give him a hearing. It's that simple. Before you dig in your heels on who you think Jesus is, hear him out. See what he's about.Nicodemus is basically saying, Do what I did. The Pharisees think none of their own have believed in Jesus, but they don't know what we know! Actually, one of their best and brightest had believed, and in verse 50 he's telling them how he took that step: Give Jesus a hearing. Said for Us!And I want us to understand that Nicodemus says this for us. The Pharisees don't budge. They're that hardened. They even take a dig at Nicodemus in verse 52 by saying he's from Galilee — they know where Nicodemus was from. They're insulting him. So the Pharisees don't hear Jesus; the question is: will we?Will we hear Jesus out?We have to. You've heard me say this before about the late Tim Keller — a pastor in New York for decades. I agree with him when he said the magnitude of Jesus's claims and the magnitude of his historical impact demands every thoughtful person to hear him out. Because of what Jesus said and what he did, you can't just doubt him from a distance, you have to look closer. Keller gives the illustration: he says imagine you get a letter in the mail from one of the biggest law firms in the country and it says, “Dear [your name], Please call us as soon as possible. You are a long-lost heir of the British throne. These assets and mansions belong to you.” You might think that's ridiculous, but you're going to look into it, right? You're gonna at least make a phone call? The magnitude of the claim is too great not to hear it out.And so it is with Jesus. We must at least hear him out. That's what Nicodemus says. Give Jesus a hearing. This is the second way we should respond to this story …2. Give Jesus your thirst.Jump back to verse 37. Verses 37–39 are the high point of this chapter. It's the concluding words of Jesus in this scene, and I want you to notice something in verse 37 — Jesus didn't just reply and give an answer this time, but he stood up and “cried out” — and that same word for “cry out” in verse 37 is translated “proclaim” in verse 28. It's the exact same verb in verses 28 and 37 and it means to say something with a loud voice. So if we were to track the speaking moments of Jesus in this chapter, from the start of the chapter to its end, it goes like this … it starts in verse 6. Verse 6: “Jesus said to them”Verse 16: “Jesus answered them”Verse 21: “Jesus answered them”Verse 28: “Jesus proclaimed”Verse 37: “Jesus stood up and proclaimed”There's an escalation happening. Jesus literally gets louder until in verse 37 he stands up and gets loud. So this is the high point! All eyes are on him!And the setting, again, is important. Verse 37 starts by telling us this happened “On the last day of the feast, the great day” — What feast? What is John talking about? This is the Feast of Booths — remember verse 2? The “Feasts of Booth was at hand” — and now in verse 37 John is making a connection between that feast and what Jesus says here. So what is that? What's the connection?Pointing to HimWell, remember the Feast of Booths was about recognizing God's provision for Israel after the exodus. Israel wandered through the desert for forty years and God met their needs, and one of those big needs, we know, was water. The people were thirsty and God gave them water to drink — and part of this feast highlighted that provision! So we know that on this last day of the feast, people were thinking about water. The people were remembering and celebrating God's provision of water in the wilderness, and so with water literally on their minds, Jesus stands up in the middle of that and he cries out:“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink! Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”Jesus is saying he's the one this feast has been pointing to this whole time. It's always been about him. He is God's true and ultimate provision for our ultimate thirst! It's amazing that Jesus did this. He caused this scene and said these words to make clear that the people's thirst is not just a thing of history, but they still thirst. He knows it. They know it. There is no modesty here. No riddles to solve. No hard sayings. Jesus is yelling. He's loud:If you're thirsty — and I know you thirst — that's why I've come! And I can almost hear the earnestness in his voice — hoarse with sincerity … heavy with seriousness … hopeful to save. He's speaking both invitation and fact. And everyone hears him, but do we hear him? Do we learn what he does?Mining Our Own ThirstImagine your own life for a minute. Something true about all of us, as human beings, is that we are glory-chasers and pleasure-seekers. This means we all want to matter and we all want to be happy. I know that about you. We all have this desire, this void, this thirst, and we can't help but try to fill it. That's what we're all doing, all the time, but the problem is that left to ourselves, we try to satisfy that thirst with everything but God. And this is not only misguided, it's evil. That's the way the Bible talks about it. The prophet Jeremiah says, Jeremiah 2:12, Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the Lord, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:12–13)Do you see? In our sin, we reject God, we abandon him, but then we go looking everywhere else for the satisfaction only he can provide. And we don't just do this one time, but over and over again. Every time we sin we are looking for the God we've forsaken. It's been said that when the young man rings the doorbell at a brothel he's actually looking for God. So what doorbells are you ringing? Where are you letting your thirst take you?I ask this for Christians and non-Christians. How badly do you want the approval of man? Do you crave relationships at all costs? Do you compromise conviction for thrills?Think about this, and I want you to imagine that in the middle of all of it, in the middle of everywhere you might be searching, Jesus is there and he stands up.In the noise of the crowd and the silence of your room, in the pressure of your work and the ache of your heart, in the high places of success and the low places of failure — Jesus stands up in that and he says over all those things, “If you thirst come to me. Come to me and drink.”Let's hear him. And then give him your thirst … right now. If you've never put your faith in Jesus, you can do that now. Just tell him.I don't wanna thirst anymore. I'm done with this search. Jesus, I believe in you. I rest in you. That is the invitation of our passage today. Give Jesus a hearing; give Jesus your thirst; and here is #3 — give Jesus to others. 3. Give Jesus to others. This is the verse 38. Jesus says that whoever believes in him, as the Scripture has said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”And right away, we should just name it. This is not what we would maybe want Jesus to say. We might think something else would fit better, something like:Believe in me and live happily ever after! — wouldn't that be nice?!Believe in me and your house won't burn, your wife won't get cancer, your children won't be sick … Believe in me and you won't be condemned — and that's true, Jesus has said that — but here he says if you believe in him, it's not about what you get but what you can give. You will have living water flowing out of your heart! And John adds in verse 39 a little clue for us: Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes in Jesus will receive the Holy Spirit. Jesus will say a lot more about the Spirit in Chapter 14, but I'll go ahead and tell you one thing he says: he says the Holy Spirit is God the Father and God the Son making their home in you (John 14:13). The Holy Spirit is the love of the triune God poured into your heart — and how do you think that looks?Stagnant Pond or Flowing River? This summer my family spent a few days at my parents' house in North Carolina. They live in the country: fields, woods, paths, and ponds. And there's this big pond tucked way down out of sight. You go down this path, past an old house, deep into the woods, and then suddenly there's an opening and there it is. It's a big pond (probably called a lake in Minnesota). It's named after my great-grandfather. And it used to be the place to go. It had a sandy beach and they built a tall diving board — 50 years ago my mom and her friends would hang out there. But you'd never know that now. It's been inactive for years, and it shows. The edges of the pond is covered in green algae, the surface is spooky still, mosquitoes rule the place. The water looks dead and you've seen water like that before — now is that your heart? Is your heart more like a stagnant pond or is it like a river? …The Holy Spirit makes one kind of heart. Saved to GiveJesus says that the one who believes in him, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water! So he satisfies you and then he pours out through you into the lives of others. Now what does that mean? How does that look? How does the Spirit in us affect the way we relate to others? We know it must mean the fruit of the Spirit! The Spirit makes us people of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness , faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The Spirit produces all of those things in our hearts in our relationships with others, but really, ultimately, the Spirit in us means that we give Jesus to people. That's what we're trying to do.Jesus has given us himself to be shared. He has poured his Spirit into our lives to flow through us into the lives of others. We get more of him so that others get him through us! Don't you want to live that way?! We're just a conduit of God's grace for others!Look, God doesn't save you for yourself — he saves you for his glory and your good — and your good is realized not in your getting, but in your giving! And church, some of you need to hear that because you think you don't have anything to give. You've been fooled or discouraged into thinking your heart is a stagnant pond, but it's not. Not according to Jesus. Christian, you have the Holy Spirit. Let today be the day God stirs anew the living water in your heart. Hey, it's a busy time of year. It's the end of one season and beginning of another — and there's a lot of excitement in the air. We start school tomorrow. And church, for this new season, let's ask God for a fresh filling of his Spirit! That's what we need! For his glory and our good! Here's how we respond to the buzz about Jesus in Chapter 7: Give Jesus a hearing.Give Jesus your thirst. And by his Spirit flowing in us, give Jesus to others. And we come to this Table in that hope. The TableThis Table is about receiving — we receive Jesus and his fellowship, and remember all that he's done for us in his life, death, and resurrected life. But we don't receive him to stop here. We receive him and then overflow!

John 7:1-24,After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” (ESV) Hey brothers, man, am I excited about the Gospel of John. It's my hope that throughout this series, our attention will keep coming back to John 20:31, which reads: “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. The point of John's gospel, in other words, isn't just believe, full stop, then go on with your life. Rather, the point is “have life” in him. The point is new life, abundant life, life even now leading to eternal life in, with, and for him. Believing, in other words, is not the end, but the means to real life in Jesus.Well, it's been a while since our church was last together in the book of John. In fact, the text message that I just read to you was one that I received from one of the other pastors back in December of last year, just prior to us first starting out in this series through John.Since that point, we, as a church, have been the glad recipients of much of John's eye-witness testimony of Jesus, up to the end of John chapter 6. And that testimony includes:The fact that Jesus is God. John 1:1,“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” And, as God, Jesus also became man. John 1:14,“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”And, as the God-man, Jesus came here, John 3:17, “[not] to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” Saved in the sense of John 20:31 — the receiving of life, having life, in Jesus. We want that life, Cities Church. More than we want food in our stomachs, or air in our lungs, we want that life, that true life, that real life that can only ever be found in Jesus. But, we didn't always want it.See, because John has also shown us John 1:10, that though Jesus “was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.” And that, “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.” And that, “This is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people [just like you and me] loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”And it's that last part — the fact that people, comfortable in their sin and content to dwell in darkness, didn't like being exposed by the light's entrance into the world — that Jesus is getting at here in John chapter 7, and most obviously verse 7. It's there where, talking with his brothers, Jesus says,“The world cannot hate you, but it hates me [it hates me. The world that was made through me. The world that I uphold by the word of my power, the world that I love and came to save, hates me] because I testify about it that its works are evil.”I testify to the world that they are not in the light, but darkness. That they are not basically good, but sinful. That they are not in right standing before God, but active rebellion to him.I tell them this because it's true. I tell them this because I love them. I tell them this because they are all, every last one of them, on a train bound for Hell and I want them to get off of it. I left Heaven to come and tell them this, and they hate me for it. Cities Church, friends who are visiting with us this morning, we must take care how we hear Jesus. In this text, Jesus is going to expose our darkness and show it to us in four different ways. These four ways can either serve as four more reasons to hate Jesus because we prefer our darkness, or they can serve as four more opportunities to recognize the darkness yet remaining in us and turn from it in order to pursue even greater intimacy with Jesus. So, with that, let's pray together once more…So, four marks of darkness. And they offer four opportunities to recognize it in ourselves and turn from it. Those four include: Un-belief, self-will, law-breaking, and wrong-judgment.1. The Evil of UnbeliefLook with me at verse 2:Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers [as in, his biologically related brothers] said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.”Works like turning water into wine in John 2, healing an official's son in John 4, feeding the 5,000 in John 6, and then walking on the water in John 6. It's works like those that Jesus' brothers are saying, “Go, that your other disciples will see them to.”And it's difficult to tell what exactly their motivation is. But from the context, I'd argue that it's something along the lines of desire to maintain a following — maintain popularity. After all, if you look back with me to John 6, you'll see that just prior to this moment, Jesus' ministry had taken quite a hit in terms of numbers. Following the feeding of the 5,000 — Jesus had upped-the-ante by calling himself the Bread of Life. He then upped it again by saying,“Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before!” (John 6:61-62)And for many of Jesus' followers at that time, well, that was just too much. Verse 66 reads,“After this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.”Imagine being the sibling of the guy who draws thousands. Till, suddenly, you're the sibling of the guy who now only draws hundreds. Well, regardless of the brothers' motivation, their word to Jesus is essentially “Jesus, get back into the limelight.” Verse 3,“Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” And now, if it weren't for John's comment in verse 5, we'd likely just dismiss these words as relatively harmless. Perhaps well-intentioned, but a bit misguided. As it is though, John jumps in and tells us flat out. Verse 5,“For [as in, the reason they said this to Jesus, was because] not even his brothers believed in him.”Do you see the unbelief of the world present in Jesus' own brothers? And now, to clarify, I don't take “not even his brothers believed in him” to mean the brothers didn't believe anything about him. Like, didn't believe Jesus was anything other than a completely ordinary guy without any special qualities whatsoever. I don't think that's what John is saying here.Rather, I think he's saying that the brothers' unbelief matched that of the crowd's back in chapter 6. Look back with me at John 6:14 for a moment. Chapter 6, verse 14. You can see that the crowds there called Jesus a prophet, right? That's a big claim. To call someone a prophet is to declare this is a person who speaks the very words of God.And, in fact, they were so impressed by this prophet that they even wanted to make him king. In John 6:15, it tells us that they were even ready to make him king by force if they had to. So clearly this crowd believed Jesus was special. They believed he was an unusually impressive, and godly person. But, did they believe he was the Bread of Life? Did they believe he'd ascend back into heaven? No, because when Jesus said he would, they left! They believed some things about Jesus, but those some things had a limit. And, for them, Jesus had just hit it.Friends, the fundamental question that we must all ask ourselves — the question that ultimately separates those who belong to God from those who don't — is not whether we believe some things about Jesus, but whether we believe Jesus and what he says about himself. He says he is the Son of God sent from heaven. He says he is the giver of eternal life who himself has existed eternally with the Father. Do we believe him? His brothers didn't. The crowds didn't. Do we? Do you?First mark of darkness and evil: unbelief (Jesus, I don't believe what you say about yourself).Well as we can see in verse 8, Jesus will deny his brothers' request. He'll hang back in Galilee for a bit longer. And in verses 10-13, we're given a brief look into how Jesus was being perceived in that moment by the crowds in Jerusalem: “He's a good man,” or “He's leading the people astray.” Importantly, we're also told in verse 10 that Jesus does end up going to the feast, but not in the way his brothers wanted him to. In fact, verse 14 shows us that he doesn't even appear till halfway through the feast. And this is where the table is set for our second mark of darkness: Self-will. And here we'll begin to pick up the speed a bit.2. The Evil of Self-willLook there with me, verse 14:About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.”And now, the litmus test. Jesus is going to give a litmus test and, spoiler alert, everyone's going to fail it... Everyone.See it with me, verse 17:“If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.”In other words, “You're confused about where my teaching comes from, yes? Well, here's how you can know whether my teaching comes from God or not. Ready for it? You must will what God wills.”Again, verse 17:“If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.”Of course, no one in that crowd knew whether his teaching came from God or not. Which of course means that no one in that crowd actually willed what God willed. You see it? Their lack of ability to understand Jesus, to hear and recognize the Divine origin of Jesus' words, betrayed the fact that God's will was not their own. That's the second mark of darkness — self-will. Living a my will, not thy will life. A life that says, “hey, listen God, I call the shots here. You can help me with the pains of life. You can be my therapy. You can be my provider. I'll let you do those things. But I steer.”It's self-will. And as you can see in this text, it blinds people from knowing Jesus. It makes it impossible to find life in Jesus. Self-will is self-destructive because it creates a wall between you and Jesus' teaching. Jesus says you will not understand the unique authority of my words till your will conforms to God's.So we have (1) unbelief, (2) self-will, and here's the third mark: Law-breaking. 3. The Evil of Law-breakingJump with me down to verse 19:“Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law.”That's quite the sweeping statement.“…none of you keeps the law.”None. He's addressing a massive, festival-sized crowd, packed in like sardines to the Temple courts of Jerusalem. And he's saying across the board, with no exceptions, no outliers, “…none of you keeps the law.”And if you are familiar with the Bible, you're probably not surprised by this. From the Old Testament to the New, the Bible is consistent in terms of what it has to say about mankind on our own. Psalm 14:3, says,“There is none who does good, not even one.”Jeremiah 17:9,“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick;”Romans 3:23,“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” 1 John 1:8,“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,”The Bible is clear — no one, by nature, keeps the Law. We know this from the Bible, and if we're honest, we know this from our lives. Sure, the way we like to say it is “I know I'm not perfect” but the fact is, that means we're sinful. That means we've fallen short. The fact that we're sinful and break God's Law is no small thing. It is the reason we're here rather than Eden. It is the reason many are headed to hell, not heaven. Our standing before God's Law is of eternal consequence. Now, if those in the crowd weren't convinced, Jesus goes one step further. Verse 19:“Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”You know they are seeking to kill Jesus, right?John 7:1 says they're seeking to kill Jesus. Here, verse 19 says they're seeking to kill Jesus. In verse 13, the crowds are so aware of the murderous intentions of the religious leaders they don't even want to be caught with Jesus' name in their mouths. And going all the way back to John 5:18, John notes,“This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him.”You don't follow the Law. You think you do. You even think you do while you simultaneously plot my murder. Third mark of worldliness: law-breaking. Now, fourth and final mark of worldliness: Wrong Judgment. 4. The Evil of Wrong JudgmentNow, think back to what happened in chapter 5 because it's going to come up again here. Back there, in chapter 5, Jesus healed a man who'd been paralyzed for 38 years. He healed him with words: “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” The religious leaders did not celebrate that moment. Rather, when they saw the man walking with his mat, they said, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” Can you imagine? Wow, today is the best day of my life. I've been healed by a miracle. Look, my legs work! Look, my hands work! Look… and then all of a sudden, “Put your bed down. How dare you carry your bed on the Sabbath.”And now, just to clarify, you can check your Old Testament. There is no such Law from God saying you couldn't take up your bed on the Sabbath. Jewish rabbis came up with that rule. It was man's rule, not God's rule. And, here, Jesus is saying it was a bad rule. Why?Well, judge for yourself. Chapter 7, verses 22-23. Again, the idea here is wrong judgment. John 7:22-23, “You circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well?”Jesus asks, are you angry with me? I gave the ability to walk to this man. The ability to swing his arms, turn his hands, go from one place to the other without having to be picked up and carried there. That man could now work. Could make money. Could buy a home. Could make a life for himself. And you're angry at me for telling him to pick up his bed?Look, we need to be so careful here because, to us, this looks just so obvious… “How foolish of those religious teachers? How dull did they have to be?” We read this and envision ourselves standing shoulder to shoulder with Jesus rolling our eyes along with him, saying, “can you believe it?”But, here's the thing, we are the religious leaders in this scene. We are those who get things wrong. We make wrong judgments. We put up laws where there are none. We disregard and ignore where there are laws. We are not, by nature, good judges when it comes to life, when it comes to Law. Even as believers, we can read some of the things Jesus said and did and think, “Man, if that'd be me, I'd not have done it that way… Not have been as patient here. Not have been as direct there. Not have waited for three days. Not have left to go to the next town. Not have spent time up in Galilee. Not have sat down with prostitutes and tax collectors. And we would not have done it because often we're simply judging things by outward appearance, just calling things as we see them. That's what Jesus is saying in verse 24:“Do not judge by appearances.”Don't simply look at the outward form of something and go from there. Don't judge through the eyes of the world, but through Jesus' eyes. Through the lens of Scripture. Judge, verse 24, “with right judgment.”Cities Church, we have to humble ourselves here. We have to recognize our need, our incredible need, for God to take us by the hand and show us through his word by his Spirit with the help of godly counsel, how to judge. We need his direction. This is why we ought to pray more often than we do: “Father, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”God, you do all that is right in glory. Do it here, through me, in this world. Use me, use us, to assess the world in the way you'd want us to. So there's four marks, four assessments of the darkness yet remaining in us. And these four, of course, relate directly to the baptismal waters out in front of me.I Believe JesusIn baptism, we say, “I believe what Jesus tells me about himself. I confess he is the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and the Giver of life eternal.”In baptism, we say, “My self-will is no more. It's gone down into the waters. It's been buried. I follow God's will for my life. I obey him including his command to be baptized in his name.”In baptism, we say, “I am a breaker of God's Law. I've sinned. I need forgiveness. I must not be clothed in my own righteousness — I have none. I must have Jesus' name put upon me. I must have Jesus' righteousness cover me.”And, in baptism, we say, “Jesus, you are the one who can make my whole body, even my soul, well. And you've seen fit to do so in a way I'd not expect. In a way I'd not, of my own accord, judge as right — by sending your Son to die in my place and allowing me to receive forgiveness not by my own working, or earning, but by believing in yours for me.In just a moment, five individuals will come to proclaim this belief.Let's pray…

John 7:13 Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews. Apparently the Jews, the Jewish leaders, were a very intimidating group of men. So much so that no one openly talked about Jesus at the feast of Booths. Those who thought He was a good man (vs. 12) must have made sure they only gave their opinion to people with whom they felt safe. Have you ever been intimidated into silence? Have you experienced the fear that comes from censorship and rejection? There are going to be times in our lives when we know we have to speak the truth in love in an atmosphere that is hostile to Christ. Usually that hostility has grown there because of the intimidation of important people in that community or social circle. There are certain circles where spiritual discussions are frowned upon or forbidden. It takes a lot of courage and love to speak up about Jesus in those circles. We need the discernment and discretion of Jesus to know when to speak and when not to. Even Jesus hesitated to go too, because He knew they were hostile to Him and wanted to kill Him. But I think we can be sure that His reluctance wasn't fear-based. It had more to do with God's timing, because He did go later. When He went, we've learned that He didn't keep silent. He went to the temple and began teaching. As He taught, the responses were guarded to non-existent. I think we can assume that the way the Jewish leaders intimidated the crowd was by their asking where He got His ideas. Essentially, they were saying that Jesus wasn't teaching what the reputable rabbis were teaching. They asserted that He wasn't educated by anyone with any authority or notoriety, therefore should be rejected and censored. Fear was stifling the crowd from talking about Him or His teaching. As we go through our day, let's not let intimidation hinder our speaking about Jesus or loving people God puts in our paths. We can trust God to use every situation and encounter for His glory as we wait on the Holy Spirit for ways to love them. Father, help us overcome fear of rejection and censorship. Give us discernment and discretion, as well as love and courage to speak out regardless of the environment. Make us bright lights in the darkness. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. John 7:8-10 Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come. Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.” Jesus encouraged His brothers to attend the Feast of Booths, but told them He wasn't going to the feast because His time wasn't completed. We recall from yesterday that Jesus' time that He referenced was His death. Jesus implied that He wasn't going to go up publicly as His brothers suggested in verse 4 because the Jews were planning to kill Him. However, after waiting for a while, perhaps a couple of days or so, Jesus did go, but secretly, which I assume means that He didn't travel with anyone. There's no mention of the disciples, so we may also conclude He likewise had encouraged them to attend the feast. When something is unclear, one of the basic rules of interpretation is to let Scripture interpret Scripture. In other words, we bring in information given in other passages that we know to be true to bring clarity. In this case, since we know Jesus never did anything on His own initiative, and always did the will of His Father, we know Jesus wasn't lying when He said He wasn't going up to the feast. He is in tune with the Father, and the Father wasn't going to the feast at the same time as His brothers. Jesus was living to love with His Father, so He constantly was abiding in the Father and trusting His will and timing in all things. It is also true that the Father abided in Jesus. Once the Son of God came into the world, Jesus' body became God's temple—the place where God dwelled and made His name known. He wasn't in the temple in Jerusalem. With Jesus' arrival, that temple and all of its ceremonies became obsolete and was about to disappear as it says in Hebrews 8:13, “When He said, ‘A new covenant,' He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.” The people went to the temple for the feasts, but now Jesus is the feast of Booths, the Passover, the priest, and the sacrifices and everything else about the temple. He could fully celebrate the Feast of Booths, and the celebration of God's deliverance, provision, and joy without going to Jerusalem. Think on that. Today, you are the temple of God. You have God dwelling in you if you believe in Jesus and have received His life. You don't have to go somewhere to worship Him or to celebrate His deliverance, provision, and joy. You carry the celebration everywhere you go, and can eat and drink, feast on Christ constantly. That's what living to love with Jesus is—it's living in the joy of His presence and manifesting it. May we be filled with understanding and realize the miracle of miracles—Christ in us, the fullness of God, the hope of glory. Let His love and joy flow like a river today as you fix your eyes on Jesus. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Full Text of ReadingsFeast of the Transfiguration of the Lord Lectionary: 614The Saint of the day is Transfiguration of the LordThe Story of the Transfiguration of the Lord All three Synoptic Gospels tell the story of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-9; Luke 9:28-36). With remarkable agreement, all three place the event shortly after Peter's confession of faith that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus' first prediction of his passion and death. Peter's eagerness to erect tents or booths on the spot suggests it occurred during the week-long Jewish Feast of Booths in the fall. According to Scripture scholars, in spite of the texts' agreement it is difficult to reconstruct the disciples' experience, because the Gospels draw heavily on Old Testament descriptions of the Sinai encounter with God, and prophetic visions of the Son of Man. Certainly Peter, James, and John had a glimpse of Jesus' divinity strong enough to strike fear into their hearts. Such an experience defies description, so they drew on familiar religious language to describe it. And certainly Jesus warned them that his glory and his suffering were to be inextricably connected—a theme John highlights throughout his Gospel. Tradition names Mount Tabor as the site of the revelation. A church first raised there in the fourth century was dedicated on August 6. A feast in honor of the Transfiguration was celebrated in the Eastern Church from about that time. Western observance began in some localities about the eighth century. On July 22, 1456, Crusaders defeated the Turks at Belgrade. News of the victory reached Rome on August 6, and Pope Callistus III placed the feast on the Roman calendar the following year. Reflection One of the Transfiguration accounts is read on the second Sunday of Lent each year, proclaiming Christ's divinity to the Elect and baptized alike. The Gospel for the first Sunday of Lent, by contrast, is the story of the temptation in the desert—affirmation of Jesus' humanity. The two distinct but inseparable natures of the Lord were a subject of much theological argument at the beginning of the Church's history; it remains hard for believers to grasp. John 7:2-4 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. Therefore, His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” As we consider these verses, I want to bring something Jesus said into view that shows an important, stark contrast between Jesus and most everyone else. John 5:30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” John 5:41 “I do not receive glory from men; John 5:44 “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? Jesus wasn't seeking to be known publicly, but His brothers assumed that was Jesus' ambition. Jesus had one ambition: to reveal and glorify His Father by doing His will on a moment by moment basis. May I encourage you to have the same ambition as Jesus today? Our purpose is essentially the same as His: to glorify God by revealing that Jesus still lives to glorify His Father. We do this by loving with Him. We aren't trying to be good Christians so we will have a good reputation with the public. We're not trying to be publicly known. I was struck by a quote from Nikolai Ludwig von Zinzindorf in Living Life Backwards by David Gibson. “Preach the gospel. Die. Be forgotten.” There's no self-ambition or self-significance driving those words. May our ambition today be to glorify God, to live for His pleasure, by loving with Jesus, preaching the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? Although He faces growing opposition from religious leaders and even misunderstanding from His own family, Jesus walks in perfect obedience to the Father's timing and mission. With clarity and conviction, Pastor Andrey explores how Jesus' words and works provoke varied reactions—astonishment, confusion, division, and rejection—yet all serve to reveal His identity as the one sent from God. This message invites us to examine our own responses to Jesus, and to trust in His divine purpose even when He defies our expectations.

Rivers of Living Water: Finding Refreshment in the Holy Spirit explores Jesus' powerful proclamation at the Feast of Booths. During this ancient Jewish celebration commemorating God's provision of water in the wilderness, Jesus stood and declared that all who believe in Him would have rivers of living water flowing from their hearts. This living water is the Holy Spirit, given to all believers after Jesus' glorification. The message examines how the Holy Spirit transforms believers, enabling them to maintain joy and thanksgiving even in difficult circumstances, just as Paul and Silas sang hymns while imprisoned. When filled with the Spirit, believers experience a melody in their hearts, speak God's word freely, and find gratitude in every situation. Receiving the Holy Spirit involves active participation—recognizing God as the giver, believing in Jesus, praying to be filled, and making room in our hearts. While receiving the Spirit happens once at salvation, being filled with the Spirit is an ongoing process requiring continual surrender and removal of anything that displaces God's presence. This teaching provides practical guidance for both new believers seeking to receive the Spirit and long-time Christians desiring to be freshly filled. It addresses common obstacles to experiencing the Spirit's fullness and offers biblical strategies for creating space for God's presence.

We were created to celebrate, be joyful, and remember God's grace. In this episode, Dr. John examines the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) and the Feast of Booths from Deuteronomy 16:9-20. He shows how these celebrations of harvest and wilderness wanderings find their fulfillment in the New Testament through the Spirit's outpouring and God's gathering of souls from all nations.Living the Moral Life: A Practical Application for Every Generation: Morality cannot be reduced to a bumper sticker. Neither is it the sum total of our debates, campaigns or banners. Morality is presented by how we live. The book of Deuteronomy is a second presentation of God's Law. It contains three sermons by Moses, as Israel stands on the border of the Promised Land. In this series, Dr. John highlights chapters 12- 17 in which Moses emphasizes living out God's commands for a moral life. Why should we listen? Because living a moral life speaks louder than any bumper sticker.

Matthew Week 99   Leviticus 23:1-2 ESV   The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the Lord that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts.       1 Corinthians 15:20 ESV   20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.       Romans 8:11 ESV   11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.       Leviticus 23:33-34, 42-43 ESV   33 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 34 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the Lord. 42 You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths, 43 that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”       Isaiah 12:2-3 ESV   2 “Behold, God is my salvation;   I will trust, and will not be afraid;   for the Lord God is my strength and my song,   and he has become my salvation.”   3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.           “He who has not seen the rejoicing at the place of the water-drawing has never seen rejoicing in his life…there was not a courtyard in Jerusalem that was not illumined by the light of the place of the water-drawing. Men of piety and good deeds used to dance before them with lighted torches in their hands, and sing songs and praises. And Levites without number with harps, lyres, cymbals and trumpets and other musical instruments were there…(Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sukkah 51a and 51b)       John 1:14a ESV   14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,       John 7:37-38 ESV   37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”       2 Corinthians 5:1-2, 5 ESV   For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling,       5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

Numbers 34 describes the boundaries of the land Israel were to conquer and possess. The southern border was perpendicular to the lowest southern point of the Dead Sea. The western border was the Mediterranean Sea. The northern border was marked by a horizontal line from Mount Hor, believed by some to be near Hadrach, to the Mediterranean Sea. And the eastern border was marked by the Jordan River starting from Galilee at the Sea of Chinnereth, which is shaped like a harp and is so-called in the Hebrew language. Verses 16-29 describe the tribal chiefs, who would lead their tribe in the taking of their lands assigned by lot.Chapters 25-29 contain the proverbs of king Solomon which were transcribed by Hezekiah's scribes, as verse 1 of chapter 25 tells. Verses 2-7 are proverbs which instruct kings in their behaviour. Deuteronomy 17 verses 18-20 commands kings to make their own personal copy of the Law – possibly a transcription by the king of the book of Deuteronomy. Having copied that Law the king was to read from his book every day of his life. Verses 2-7 contain a cluster of proverbs to guide the king in ruling wisely. Verse 2 tells that God has concealed treasures in His Word for kings to unravel. We as prospective monarchs must apply our minds to this task. It will not only help us in ruling our own lives, but will assist others in understanding the keys to the Kingdom of our Sovereign, when He sends His Son to rule upon the earth. Verse 7 onwards contain many proverbs quoted in the New Testament. We have selected only a handful including one quoted quoted by our Lord Jesus Christ in one of his parables to the Pharisees when he had beef an invited guest. Verses 8-26 are proverbs about behaving in humility and avoiding the pitfalls of pride. Verses 8-10 advise agreeing with our neighbour speedily, which our Master addresses in his sermon on the mount. Verse 15 advises a patient use of the tongue if we are to be persuasive. Verses- 21 is a proverb that is used by the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:19-21. Verse 24 advises great care in the choice of a lifelong marriage partner. The chapter concludes with an appeal for self control.John 7 records an unannounced visit of Jesus to Jerusalem at the Feast of Booths ie Tabernacles. There was a division among the people, as to whether our Lord was a good man, or a deceiver of the people. Jesus arrives in the middle of the feast. Many were convinced that he was the Christ. Although officers from the Sanhedrin were sent to arrest Jesus they could not do so because his time had not yet come. Jesus prophesied to them of his ascent to heaven and the giving of the Holy Spirit. Some said that this was the prophet like Moses. Others rejected this idea just because our Lord was from Galilee. Jesus just like Jonah, also from Gath-Hepher in Galilee told his audience to consider the sign of the prophet Jonah. We have seen in our earlier studies that the sign had many levels of significance, but chiefly spoke of Jesus' resurrection.

John 7:1-39English Standard Version7 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Read OnlineJesus moved about within Galilee; he did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him. But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near. But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but as it were in secret. John 7:1–2; 10The Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was one of three great feasts during which the people made a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem to commemorate God's saving action in their lives. This particular feast was to commemorate the 40 years that the Israelites traveled through the desert and dwelt in tents, or booths, as they wandered and were led by Moses. Therefore, the feast is also referred to as the “Feast of Booths.” During the seven days of this feast, people would set up tents (booths) around the Temple area and live in them to commemorate the journey of their ancestors. In the Gospel passage quoted above, we read that Jesus went up to the feast secretly. Saint Augustine explains that this means that though Jesus was present, the full revelation of His divine identity was hidden from many. He was physically there, but many did not know Who He was. That particular year, when the feast was half over, Jesus appeared in the Temple area and began to teach. Many were amazed at His words, and others thought He was possessed. After teaching the people, there was much disagreement among them about our Lord's identity. Jesus said to them, “You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” In that statement, Jesus essentially was saying that among those listening to Him, some had come to faith in Him and discovered His true identity as the Messiah, while others lacked the gift of faith and remained blind to Him. To them, His divine essence remained a secret. In a symbolic way, Jesus' presence at the Feast of Tabernacles reveals Him as the new Moses. It was Moses who led the people through the desert for 40 years toward the promised land while they dwelt in tents. Our Lord now took on that role of leading the people who were commemorating this 40-year journey by appearing in the Temple and pointing the people to Heaven, the true Promised Land.Today, our Lord continues to lead His people through the journey of life by coming to each of us to teach us and to reveal His divine presence. Some listen and believe and continue on the journey. To them, the secrets of our Lord are revealed. Others do not believe and, as a result of their lack of faith, fail to discover the hidden presence of our Lord all around them. Reflect, today, upon the image of Jesus coming to you during your long journey through the desert of this life. He initially comes to you in secret, veiled in His true essence. As He teaches you, He desires to lift that veil and reveal to You His true glory. He desires that you dwell with Him through prayer and remain attentive to His Word. As you gaze upon our Lord, reflect upon the question of how clearly you hear Him speak each day. He is here, with you always. But are you with Him? Do you hear Him, believe in Him, follow Him and serve Him? Do you allow Him to lead you every day toward His promises of new life? Allow our Lord to pitch His tent next to yours so that You will daily be attentive to His teaching and be led by Him to the glories of Heaven. My hidden Lord, You came to reveal to all people Your burning love and invitation to eternal life. Please come and dwell with me during my journey through life, and open my mind and heart to all that You wish to reveal. May I know You fully and follow You to the Promised Land of Heaven. Jesus, I trust in You.Image: James Tissot, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsSource of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. By Davy Crockett By 1888, Old Sport Campana had competed in 35 ultra-distance races, and eight in 1888. He also competed in the most historic six-day race of the 19th century, held in November 1888 in Madison Square Garden. William M. O'Brien (1858-1891), was the race organizer. He partnered with Richard K. Fox (1846-1922), editor and publisher of the sporting publication, The Police Gazette, to offer the Fox Diamond Belt, valued at $2,500 to the winner. If someone beat James Albert's (1856-1912) world record of 621 miles, they would get a bonus of $1,000. The contestants needed to reach 525 miles in order to claim a share of the gate receipts. With an entrance fee of $50, about 125 runners applied for entry, but the race was limited to 40 starters, including Campana. The New York City press was favorable. “Old Sport Campana, whose increasing years seem to add new vigor to his constitution, will start. He will celebrate his 99th birthday on the track.” He was confident that he would reach 550 miles before he retired from the sport. Everyone wondered what new antics he would perform during this race. A bold prediction was made that George Littlewood (1859-1912), of England, would break the world record. “Probably no man alive today can beat Littlewood. He is a phenomenal pedestrian, and having a poor field to beat should win with ease.” New book! Old Sport Campana: Ultrarunning's Most Popular and Amusing 19th Century Runner. As I researched for these podcast episodes, I realized that I had enough content for an entire amusing and interesting book. This episode previews chapter six of the book. To read the entire story of Old Sport, get my new book on Amazon. The Start                 Madison Square Garden An hour before the start, Madison Square Garden was full, with 9,000 spectators, despite a howling blizzard that ripped through the city during the day. Thirty-six runners came to the starting line, led, as usual, by Campana, age 52. At 12:05 a.m. on November 26, 1888, Campana led the runners across the line. “Campana who has been likened to a fragment of time, broken off the far end of eternity, got a big start and made his bony shanks play like drumsticks for a lap. He passed under the wire first.” That first-place lap won him a bet with Police Captain Tom Reilly, who paid him a five-dollar silver certificate over the fence. “Campana is badly in need of a shave and looks rather more cadaverous than usual. He is in high spirits. He wears an American flag around his waist, an old pair of white gaiters, and a boutonniere of greasy silver certificates.” George Littlewood, of England, took the lead right away, completed the first mile in 5:02, and reached the future marathon mark in about 3:20. Through the first night, it became obvious why there were plans to have Madison Square Garden demolished and replaced. “The ring in the center of the garden looked as if it had been swept by a hurricane. Booths were overturned and the floor was flooded with melted snow, which had dropped through the crevices in the roof.” Littlewood, dressed in white drawers and an undershirt, with a red cloth around his neck and a toothpick in his mouth, reached 77.5 miles in twelve hours in front of about 700 people in the cold building. After twelve hours, Campana had covered 60 miles. Campana complained that the scorers were rigging the race against him. “He went on again, with a blue nose, red cheeks, and open mouth.” Littlewood was the first to reach 100 miles in 15:59:00. “He was roundly cheered and presented with a floral horseshoe. Campana became so worked up by the demonstration that he skipped around the track as he did in days of yore.” Sixteen of the runners reached 100 miles on the first day, earning them a refund of their entrance fee. Even Campana reached that mark. “His homely figure and good-natured smile have been seen on every sawdust track for years past.

Ezra 3:1-13 English Standard Version Rebuilding the Altar 3 When the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem. 2 Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. 3 They set the altar in its place, for fear was on them because of the peoples of the lands, and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings morning and evening. 4 And they kept the Feast of Booths, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the rule, as each day required, 5 and after that the regular burnt offerings, the offerings at the new moon and at all the appointed feasts of the Lord, and the offerings of everyone who made a freewill offering to the Lord. 6 From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord. But the foundation of the temple of the Lord was not yet laid. 7 So they gave money to the masons and the carpenters, and food, drink, and oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had from Cyrus king of Persia. Rebuilding the Temple 8 Now in the second year after their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak made a beginning, together with the rest of their kinsmen, the priests and the Levites and all who had come to Jerusalem from the captivity. They appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to supervise the work of the house of the Lord. 9 And Jeshua with his sons and his brothers, and Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together supervised the workmen in the house of God, along with the sons of Henadad and the Levites, their sons and brothers. 10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the directions of David king of Israel. 11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.
