This is Strange Wilderness, a show that takes you out of the comfort of your homes and pulls back the curtain to show you the strange and untamed universe we live in. No matter where we are, and no matter how much we build and destroy, we are at the mercy of a wild, uncaring, unforgiving reality. Join us as we look into the things that go bump in the night. Remember, the world is a strange and terrifying place.
Today we're going to be talking about something that's followed us throughout our lives. Most of us grew up with them sprinkled throughout our childhood, through outlets including Disney, bedtime stories, fairy tales, and more. In fact, one particular character is the biggest and most well known figure of Disney. But, we're not going to be talking about Tinker Bell! Rather, we'll be talking about fairies, their origin, and what's believed about them. Enjoy! Welcome to a special, full length episode of the Archive. This won't be for the faint of heart. However, if you enjoy hearing about this stuff, sit back, turn off the lights, and enjoy. With Matt absent for this week's episode, Ginge has recruited special guest BrownieInTheBin, a history and mystery streamer, to the show. This is the story of the Smiley Face Killer. What is the Smiley Face Killer? Simply put, this is a name given to a possible serial killer, or gang, who seems to have murdered around 45 men throughout 11 states towards the late 90s through 2010s. Though there is quite a lot that can “tie” these together, the main thing that these all share? Smiley Face graffiti somewhere close to most of the crime scenes. For nearly seven years across the 1980s, a woman was plagued by hundreds of harassing phone calls, threatening letters, and much worse. Many were skeptical of the authenticity regarding this harassment campaign, with law enforcement even accusing the supposed victim of fabricating the attacks, for one reason or another. In any event, this terrifying campaign of threats and harassment came to a head in 1989, when the victim inexplicably went missing, being found weeks later. This is a story you might be familiar with if you've watched the original Unsolved Mysteries TV show, and it's a truly baffling case. This is the story surrounding the death of Cindy James. Join the Strange Wilderness team as they travel deep into the swamps of the Florida wilderness, as they look into the story of the legendary Skunk Ape, examining alleged sightings and evidence surrounding this cryptid, on top of weighing the possibility of each theory that attempts to explain the Skunk Ape's existence. In the fall of 1980, Genna Susan Sharp and her five children left their home after Sue's marriage to husband James Sharp had fallen apart. They relocated from Connecticut to northern California, to be closer to where her brother Don was living at the time. Shortly after arriving in California, Sue rented Cabin 28 at the Keddie Resort in Keddie, a rural community in Sierra Nevada. Not long after moving in, Sue and three others would fall victim to a horrific act of violence within the walls of Cabin 28, sparking a lively debate surrounding the identity of the culprits, and the effectiveness of local law enforcement. For the debut of Matt's Mysteries, Strange Wilderness is proud to bring you the mystery surrounding the Keddie Cabin Murders.
In either 1947 or 1948, a strange and rather ominous distress signal was broadcast from somewhere along the Straits of Malacca. When an American vessel called the Silver Star reached the source of the signal, and boarded the ship it seemingly came from, they were shocked and disturbed by the scene that lay before them. What they found, and what happened next solidified this as a legendary maritime myth of sorts, with the story being told and retold to this day. The debate as to the purpose of the freighter and the fate of its crew continues to this day, with no answers in sight. This is the story of the mystery surrounding the Ourang Medan. This is the story of a series of events that have happened to Matt over the past decade or so. What happened may or may not have just been a series of recurring dreams, spread out over nearly a decade, but there may be more to it. We feel as if these dreams have too many similarities to those who have allegedly been abducted by extraterrestrial beings to remain in the realm of an overactive subconscious imagination, and as such, believe that there is an extreme possibility that Matt may be a character, not unlike the ones described over the past few Call of the Void episodes, who has come into contact with something not of this world. Today, we're looking at a personal set of encounters with extraterrestrials. This is the story of The Dreams.
In 1947, a newlywed couple and their friend travelled to Severn Falls, Ontario, for a relaxing honeymoon at a cottage up north. However, things would take a mysterious and tragic turn, as the cabin would go up in flames shortly after arriving. In a startling twist, one of the cottage goers was found dead, having drowned in just nine inches of water. The case of the Eight Day Bride remains unsolved to this day, and the circumstances and details surrounding it will leave one confused and disturbed. Joining us on this adventure is a close friend of the podcast, a ball of savage sass and fire, and all around smart person: Darkethena. In the summer of 1997, a woman from the Philippines residing in Chicago brought something quite unique and strange to the attention of a local journalist. She claimed to have met and befriended a man who had given up his body to be used as a vessel by an ancient, extraterrestrial being. The man, called Eugene Randall, had been taken over by a 3,000 year old being called Shimikus Etua. What followed was nearly an hour long interview with this alleged entity, with a rough summary being published in NUFORC.org shortly thereafter. Today, let's examine the story of Shimikus Etua, and the bizarre and somewhat eye-opening interview that followed.
Sometimes, we see things out of the corner of our eye, but it's just a quick flicker, leading you simply think, “Okay brain, can we not?” Other times it happens in complete darkness, where you see odd shadows forming as you fall asleep, possibly in the corner or on the wall. Maybe they're rising up at the foot of your bed, or worse, on the bed next to you. What if we told you it was all in your head... Quite literally? Would you believe that? Okay, what if we told you what you are seeing is a being of sorts known as a Shadow Person? Would you believe that? Today, we're going to talk about Shadow People, and boy, is this going to be a fun ride. On a cool October day, in the fall of 1974, 41 year old Carl Higdon embarked on a weekend long hunting trip through the Medicine Bow National Forest in Carbon County, Wyoming. An experienced hunter in a new and unfamiliar area, Carl was amazed to note that the area was incredibly remote and seemed completely untouched by human presence. Upon encountering a group of deer, Carl would eventually come to find that his hunting trip would be cut short. For, as he fired on one of the deer, he would encounter a being not of this Earth. This being would then take Carl on an interstellar voyage, 163,000 lightyears from our pale blue dot. Today, let's examine the case behind the being known as Ausso One.
This is a story many of you may be familiar with, considering it's been covered by a certain man who enjoys force feeding the like button liver and artichoke birthday cake with a side of carbonated goat milk, but it's also been viewed quite a bit on Reddit, accumulating almost 2000 upvotes since it was posted last year. It was posted to the LetsNotMeet subreddit, which is one of our favourite subreddits to browse when we're in the mood for some creepy, allegedly true stories. Anyway, this is a story that we're calling: “The Bell Man”. Original Story written by Reddit user WilheimBaudelaire.
Welcome to the Archive, a bi-weekly series adding to the Strange Wilderness Podcast's catalogue of creepy content. Join Ginge and dive into cases lost to time, exploring the depths of true crime history. These cases stray toward the darker, terrifying, and mysterious, and as such won't be for the faint of heart. But, if you enjoy listening to deep dives into all things true crime: Sit back, turn off the lights, and enjoy. In our introduction to this series, Ginge goes into the archives to explore the history, controversy and eerie encounters surrounding Cheesman Park. On a cold and dark December night in the winter of 1978, then 26 year old night watch security officer Pier Zanfretta was on a routine patrol along the streets of Torriglia, a village in the metropolitan city of Genoa in Italy, when he encountered something that would both confuse and terrify him. While investigating what he initially thought was an attempted break in at his client's property, Zanfretta encountered the extraterrestrial. For, on this moonless night, Zanfretta would stumble on a group of what could only be described as grotesque creatures from out of this world. Today, let's examine the first part in a series of horrific and potentially extraterrestrial events, also known as the Pier Zanfretta Encounter.
Hauntings don't just happen in your home or at the local cemetery. In fact, one of the most common places are the roads we travel on almost every day. Whether it's a highway, road, bridge, and so on, there's bound to be a story or two. Today, we're going to talk about a road from Ginge's home state called Jeremy Swamp Road, located in Southbury, Connecticut. There may be nothing to this, but there may be something sinister, or even paranormal, surrounding this road and many others on this strange planet we call home.
On the evening of October 11, 1973, Calvin Parker and Charles Hickson set out on a fishing excursion. They set up shop on their most resourceful fishing spot, located near an old shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The trip was standard fare for the men, as they were both experienced fishermen who had set out on similar trips numerous times before. However, on this October night, they would encounter something that would change their lives, and go down in history as one of the most credible UFO sightings and alien abductions. Today, let's examine what is considered one of the most credible and traumatic extraterrestrial encounters, known as the Pascagoula Abduction.
There's no question that there are a number of mysterious deaths that have occurred throughout history, some even featuring what could be considered supernatural elements or forces. Having said that, it is also possible that there may genuinely be a legitimate, real world, logical explanation behind these deaths, and the events that took place leading up to them are weird enough to cause people to look to the paranormal as the culprit. There is definitely a valid argument to be made in that direction. But when a healthy, good spirited and mild mannered man is found dead in his apartment, with a series of letters, as well as the scene itself painting a picture of curses and the occult, we are left with more questions than answers, especially when trying to use a logical approach to rationalize everything. This is the story surrounding the mysterious death of Christopher Case. Resources: https://www.bedtime-stories.uk/project/christopher-case-peculiar-death http://www.spineonline.ca/screams-from-the-basement/2019/10/9/the-witch-that-killed-christopher-case https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19910504&slug=1281135 https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2020/01/the-mysterious-paranormal-death-of-christopher-case/
Throughout recent history, there have been numerous stories detailing the alleged encounter and subsequent abductions by extraterrestrial forces that individuals have been the subject of. However, almost all these cases include a distinct lack of substantial, credible evidence, despite the fact that many leave their encounters with specific details, markings and implants on the body, as well as a variety of physical injuries. That said, if the case of Jim Sparks is to be believed, then what will be discussed today can be considered the only case of an individual being abducted, and returning with nearly 100 percent of their memories surrounding the ordeal. Today, let's examine the story later dubbed: The Keepers.
In 1994, Debora Hoyt felt an incredibly strong pull to leave her family's home and drive into the mountains. This journey, along with her husband would take them onto Highway 50 to a part known as Bullion Bend. Unbeknownst to her, a mother Christine and her child Nicky had gone missing about 5 days earlier. They'd left their home but never arrived at their destination, thus causing their relatives to report them missing. As Debora and her husband were coming up to Bullion Bend, she noticed something on the side of the road. As they grew closer, she realized that something was in fact a naked women lying on the side of the road who she believed to be dead. The series of events that follow are unexplained to this day, and may be one of the most credible instances of the phenomenon known as Guardian Angels. Around 11pm, on a warm August night in the summer of 1955, eight people burst into the police station in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The people were in a frenzy, a clear state of panic. “We need help!”, one had proclaimed, following up by uttering a phrase that, at the time confused local authorities. “We've been fighting them for nearly four hours!” 66 years later, the tale of a group engaging in a terrifying and seemingly impossible battle with what would be described as extraterrestrial forces would go down in history, cementing itself as a legend in local Kentucky circles. For, you see, they alleged that for nearly four hours, the group was attacked by what they described as little silver men. Today examine the curious case of the The Kelly-Hopkinsville Goblins.
Welcome explorers! We thought it would be neat to kick off the start of season three with a Q&A, so you get to know a bit more about both Ginge and Matt. Most of the questions are silly, and some aren't, but we think the responses and banter are interesting and fun on their own. We hope you learn a thing or two about the hosts behind the podcast you've come to know over the past four months, and we hope you enjoy something a little more light hearted!
Welcome explorers, and Happy New Year! It's the Strange Wilderness team, here with a short update and announcement regarding the podcast in 2022. During this short but sweet recording, you'll learn about all the plans we have for the podcast during 2022, including updates to our episode format, episode topics, overall podcast aesthetic, as well as a sneak peak into the various side projects we have planned. We hope you're as excited for the new and improved Strange Wilderness Podcast as we are, and we'd like to thank each and every one of you for tuning in over the past four months.
With how short our podcast exclusive Christmas Special was, we thought it would be neat to look at some scary stories revolving around New Years Eve, to give the Strange Wilderness Podcast one last hurrah before going into 2022. After scouring the internet for exactly 17 minutes, 43 seconds, we found a few stories posted to Reddit that I thought fit the theme perfectly. Here is one of those stories. On New Years Eve in 2011, a group of friends experienced a bizarre series of events, involving texts from an unknown individual who seemed to know a little too much about their night to be considered coincidence. This is the story of The Phantom Texter. Original Story: https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/1i0wzd/new_years_eve_2011_my_eerie_start_to_2012/
Happy Holidays explorers! Tis the season for good food, good cheer, good friends and good beer… But the holly jolly atmosphere of presents and love are merely a front for the darkness that hides below. Join me, Ginge and SarahSTFU as we dive into the evil book of Christmas Nursery Rhymes. It's a leathery tome bound in human skin, and I found it under the remains of Santa's workshop. He won't mind if we borrow it to share some truly terrifying stories with you all. Now, deck the halls with gore and bodies, and enjoy the Strange Wilderness production of Krampus, written by J. In this episode, we're doing things a little differently. With Ginge out of town for the week, we've decided to dive deep into the archives and bring you the episode that inspired the podcast you've come to love. Before Strange Wilderness, there was Call of the Void, a short-form show Matt created around experiences and encounters with all things extraterrestrial. It was much more serious in tone, and this show will be returning as part of our side content in the new year, but for now, here is the season finale of that series, where Ginge joined Matt as the one and only guest. This episode is purely theoretical and details can and probably will be wrong in some capacity, but it was fun to speculate nonetheless. This is our deep dive into The Dark Forest Theory, and how it can possibly be linked to what we call The Uncanny Valley.
In this episode, Strange Wilderness' own ScardyGinge shares a particularly bizarre and downright terrifying experience she and her husband Josh experienced in a rural part of Connecticut while visiting the area for Thanksgiving. Ginge describes how they encountered a rather suspicious abandoned vehicle, followed by a likely supernatural event that had them on edge for the rest of their drive. What would you do if you were right in the middle of a Waze Haunting? Ginge YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ScardyGinge
In this episode, we do things a little differently. We look into, and discuss, the theoretical concept known as False Vacuum Decay. This is a theoretical concept that sits snugly in the terrifying world of physics, and Matt will absolutely get some concepts wrong since he's not a physics person, so bear with us as we dive down this rabbit hole. It's equal parts interesting and terrifying, and we hope you enjoy the cosmic dread that is this episode! In our first, allegedly true story, from user SoulRequiem, a group exploring an abandoned set of properties near their cabin find both a hidden treasure, as well as an ominous and possibly supernatural dweller within. Don't touch anything, especially The Fur Coat. And, in our second, allegedly true tale, from user imjonsey, a group of friends enjoying a night on James River would have their activities brought to a startling halt, when they hear what can only be described as a desperate and pained scream coming from just across the water. We made it! This is the end of the Cryptid Iceberg! Thank you to everyone who has tuned in over the past eight weeks, and to those who live in future land and listen to the series down the line! We hope you've enjoyed the madness! Somewhere on the great expanse of debauchery and memes we call the internet, there exists an image. It's a simple iceberg, though it has been used as a basis for creating tiered lists of a number of different topics. Today, we're stepping away from our usual programmed content, so that I can guide you down the rabbit hole for one of these topics. This is Matt's horribly written, possibly incoherent deep dive into the Cryptid Iceberg. I will be choosing five lesser known cryptids from each tier, and will present them over an eight episode series. With all that said, enjoy, and... I'm sorry... This is Tier 8. In this episode, we explore, and often ridicule, these five cryptids: 1 - Con Rit 2 - Old Green Eyes 3 - Squonk 4 - Veggie Man 5 - Carnivorous Pink Clouds The Paranormal Scholar Site: http://www.paranormalscholar.com The Paranormal Scholar YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheParanormalScholar
We've all grown up listening to nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and fables. Some of them we can recite word for word, or even sing along to. They helped shape us into who we are today without even realizing it. Cinderella, Ring Around the Rosey, Hansel and Gretel, the list goes on. But did you know that most of these moral directing stories stemmed from real life events? This is the true story of The Pied Piper.

With how the Strange Wilderness podcast is growing, and how well our confused ramblings are being received, we decided to create a discord server to bring us all together, where we can share spooky stories and discuss all things strange and wild. With the creation of this space, we've decided to dedicate specific episodes toward sharing and discussing terrifying tales submitted by community members. This is one of those episodes. Enjoy today's tale, that we have titled "Growls from the Gazebo" shared by community member DarklyKnighted. Welcome to Season 2! Roughly 25 million years ago, a massive fissure opened within the Eurasian continent, and, as a result, gave birth to what is now called Lake Baikal. This lake is considered the oldest and deepest lake on earth, measuring an estimated 5,387 feet, or 1,642 meters deep, and contains about 5,521 cubic miles of water (which is about 1/5 of Earth's fresh surface water). The lake is an ecological and biological marvel, as it features countless species of flora and fauna, with 80% of its more than 3700 species being found exclusively at this location on earth. Located near the Russian city of Irkutsk (aka one of the largest cities in Siberia), this sprawling freshwater expanse is the subject of many, dare I say it, strange and wild occurrences and encounters, leading some to spin tangled webs of conspiracies involving the lake and its possible inhabitants. This is our deep dive into the mysteries surrounding this lake. With Halloween just around the corner, the Strange Wilderness team thought that it would be appropriate to sift through the pages of the darkest, most terrifying stories that the internet has to offer. In a fitting fashion to what you've come to know us for, we stumbled across one story we think you will enjoy. In this tale, written by author Andrew Layden, a reporter travels to the wilderness to investigate a dead man, the man who found him, and the bizarre, otherworldly creature he saw. Matt and Ginge have asked wh1te_r1der, Orini, TheCommander5643, Rillean, bagandshag, Chelseavo and SarahSTFU to help us truly bring this story to life*. You can find links to their socials and other relevant places you can follow and support their content, as well as links to the original story in the show notes. This is Tier 4. In this episode, we explore, and often ridicule, these five cryptids: 1 - Pukwudgie 2 - Van Meter Visitor 3 - Sheepsquatch 4 - Hook Island Sea Monster 5 - Orang Gadang

This is the true story of Beauty and the Beast. Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimilco, there lies a small island. This island was never meant to be a tourist destination, but its dark and mysterious past has led to it becoming a hotbed for paranormal investigators, thrill seekers, and fans of all things spooky. You may be asking yourself, “What makes this place so scary?”, and in response, I'll let the dolls strung up across the island tell you for themselves. For, you see, this island has since been named La Isla de las Muñecas, which, when translated, reads The Island of the Dolls. In our first, allegedly true story, from user leprus_americanus, a hiker goes missing for one of the previously mentioned reasons, and a search and rescue operation dispatched to locate them encounters something both unexplainable, and tragic. Have you found The Missing Hiker? And, in our second, allegedly true tale, originally published to the Missing 411 SubReddit by user REP143, a man and his family come into contact with something strange. After hearing of the Missing 411 phenomenon, this user would go on to speculate that they may have come across, and possibly narrowly escaped, becoming part of the very phenomenon Paulides investigates. How would you react, if you were protecting your family and came across Tripwire?
