On today's episode, I talk to musician David Longstreth. Originally from Southbury, CT, David recorded his first album The Graceful Fallen Mango after dropping out of college. After returning to finish his degree, he began recording under the name Dirty Projectors, and in 2003, Western Vinyl released their first album The Glad Fact. They continued to record albums and slowly built a name for themselves in the thrumming Brooklyn music scene of the aughts. In 2009, Domino released their album Bitte Orca to a great deal of acclaim, and in all, the band has released 20 albums and EPs; their latest, Song of the Earth, is a collaboration with the German orchestral group s t a r g a z e, and it's fantastic! Jeff Manville, the first selectman of Southbury, was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about the town's lawsuit over trees. Allegedly, over 100 trees were illegally removed by a resident, and may owe around $9 million in fines. (0:00)  In Dumb Ass News, a mascot pushed a 9-year-old kid to the ground, and says the kid started the physical interaction. (15:39)  A KITT replica, from Knight Rider, was parked at the station parking this morning, as Miguel from Rad Stallions and Brad from CT Movie Cars were in studio with Chaz and AJ. The Tribe called in their favorite movie and TV cars, while AJ re-enacted his favorite scenes. (21:06)  Danny Mac, a local legend and former PLR street teamer, was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about the Milford Veterans. Danny is also (most importantly) a Navy vet, and brought some other veterans in with him to talk about their time serving in Vietnam, and attending Woodstock. (31:13) In Dumb Ass News, raw cacao and chocolate are very different things. This kid had to learn that the hard way. (42:13)

Lisa shares the unique challenge she worked on that led her to become a Teacher Innovation Champion in 2022: “How can I help students regulate their emotions to be prepared for learning throughout the school day by using plickers and a choice board?” Lisa talks about how the data from students' plickers influenced the decisions she made throughout her creative project. She speaks on how she was taught teacher creativity and design thinking in the Teacher Innovation Studio, highlighting the personal challenges she faced with not feeling creative as an educator. “That was my biggest takeaway from this program was flipping the script on my thinking about creativity and how I view it. Now, I see that everything I do is creative. Every time I step into my classroom, I am creatively solving a problem.”  – Lisa Saunders Lisa then shares the valuable lessons she learned from being in a teacher cohort and how she's helping her students navigate their emotions and become better problem-solvers. Lisa's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Just go for it! Try something new and if it fails, that's okay. Failure is good! Know that you are creative. Trust yourself and focus on the good. It's called The Rochambeau Trail – 680 miles from Newport, Rhode Island to Yorktown, Virginia. General Rochambeau and his 5,000 French troops marched this trail to come to the aid of George Washington's Patriot Army in the Revolutionary War. Together, the French and the Patriots won the last major military action of the war – the Siege at Yorktown. After that, the British went back to England and the colonialists were able to draft the new U.S. Constitution and declare freedom. The logistics of feeding, transporting and preparing campsites in the 1700s were incredibly complex. And why were the French helping the Patriots anyway? In Part 1, you'll hear answers to those questions and much more from Revolutionary War expert historian Dr. Robert Selig and Southbury, CT Town Historian John Dwyer, whose region the marchers passed through.

Whether it's a highway, road, bridge, and so on, there's bound to be a story or two. Today, we're going to talk about a road from Ginge's home state called Jeremy Swamp Road, located in Southbury, Connecticut. There may be nothing to this, but there may be something sinister, or even paranormal, surrounding this road and many others on this strange planet we call home.

"Dirty Projectors" started out as a solo project from founding member David Longstreth, who wrote, recorded and self-released the first two albums while he was studying music at Yale University. During his summer breaks he would go on tours throughout the USA, playing mostly in small rock clubs organized by DIY promoters who he had connected with via Myspace. It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage. The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. This time 5 full time members who were introduced to listeners by 5 separate EPs that dropped throughout 2020, together with cover artwork provided by David's brother Jake Longstreth. For the full story and our music picks, tune in to this week's installment of "Roots to Grooves"!To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut‘s Beaten Path

In the 1930s, bigotry was alive and well in the United States – a perfect setting for supporters of the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany to establish a U.S.-based support system. As part of that effort, Hitler's German-American supporters bought land in various strategic locations around the country, including in New York State, Pennsylvania, New Jersey – and Southbury, Connecticut (on land now known as the Fox Hollow Preserve, off Sleepy Hill Road). At these sites, they developed camps – for adults and youth – to raise the flag of the swastika and to march and sing the songs of the Third Reich. Listen as Southbury Town Historian John Dwyer recounts the fight between the 2,500-strong community (in those days) and the Bund as the organization was called.

They have been one of Southbury's hidden gems for close to 35 years now. Nora has grown up in the business - both her and her sister Becky are General Mangers, her father Gani is the owner, and her grandmother on her mother's side was the original Patty, whose silhouette is featured on their logo. As of this last December Patty's recently opened up their 2nd location on Route 25 in Newtown, so whether you're in Southbury or Newtown you're not far from a Patty's Pantry. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial.  Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Judith Dupré, is a writer, structural historian, and public speaker. She is the New York Times bestselling author of several works of narrative nonfiction on art, design, and architecture. She has been described as “a scholar with a novelist's eye for detail and a journalist's easy style. She received her undergraduate degree from Brown and a masters from Yale. She has written books entitled Monuments, Churches, Bridges, Skyscrapers, and One World Trade Center. Now, we turn our feature story…. Thanks to Lady Gaga, you can now sip a cup of craft coffee or cold-pressed juice on a peaceful patio overlooking the Pawcatuck River and relax in an environment with a friendly, West Coast surfer kind of vibe. Brian and Chiyoko Samuelson, owners of Stick & Fin, a gem tucked away at 163 Main St., met in 2017 when Brian was working as a tour photographer for Lady Gaga. Chiyoko, who is Canadian, was the contact person for the Toronto venue where Lady Gaga's concert was held, and one of the first people to greet Brian. The two hit it off almost immediately. "We've been inseparable ever since," said Chiyoko with a smile as she bent over to pet the couple's puppy, a Bernese mountain dog named Amiga. Stick & Fin, although primarily a coffee shop where the brew is made using a reverse osmosis process, also serves such nourishing items as avocado toast made using hand-crafted, artisan breads from South County Bread Company and other wholesome baked goods and pastries. It's also a dog-friendly spot, and a gallery where colorful surfboards from Rhode Island Surf Co. are on display and for sale and where large attractive ocean photos hang on the walls. The Samuelsons also plan to show the artwork of friends and have rotating exhibits.  Although Brian and his siblings grew up in Southbury, Connecticut, they spent summers with their parents in Westerly. It was during those Westerly summers that Brian's interest in surfing began and grew.  "I surfed a lot growing up summers in Rhode Island," he said, "and then later ... in California and in Costa Rica." The name of the Samuelson's shop actually comes from the surfing world. "We wanted to marry a surf culture theme with everyday lifestyle needs, like craft coffee, healthy cold-pressed juices and various on-the-go bites," he said. "I think Stick & Fin is a great addition to our community," said Westerly photographer,  Josh Behan: "Surfing and surf culture are a big part of this town for me, and Stick & Fin fits right in there with Rhode Island Surf Company, High Tide Juice Co, Civil, and others." Stick & Fin will open officially on July 1. For more on everything going on in Southern Rhode Island, head over to westerlysun.com There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from ALDI in Westerly. They're looking for part-time floor associates. You'll be responsible for merchandising and stocking product, cashiering, and cleaning up the store. Pay is up $14.30 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=29ee93bf88f3a0fe Today we're remembering the life of Nancy Heinold, 85, of Lawton-Foster Road South in Hopkinton.  She is survived by her husband, Edward, her son, her daughter,, her grandson, and two brothers.  Mrs. Heinold was born in Stonington, CT. Following high school, Nancy was employed as a secretary at American Velvet at which time she went on a blind date and fell in love at first sight with her husband. Ed and Nancy were married in 1957. Besides raising three lovely children with her husband in Milford, CT, Nancy was involved with the Girl Scouts, volunteering at Milford Hospital, baking wedding cakes for friends and family and teaching catechism to name a few. After 30 years away from home, she and her husband returned to Hopkinton. Next to her devoted love for her husband and children, Nancy also loved all animals, Rod Stewart (she had to hear at least one of his songs per day), watching golf and last but definitely not least, spending time with her grandson Matthew. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Nancy's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! This past week has been nothing short of crazy...we were trying to be optimistic and hope that our little gym in Southbury would be isolated enough so that the pandemic wouldn’t affect us but sadly I was wrong...it’s not the first time I was wrong and I’m sure it won’t be the last. After almost 9 years we, along with many other businesses have been forced to shut down daily operations. It is definitely scary and I’m glad we can do our part to contribute towards the greater good. Anyway - in this week’s episode Mikey and I get a chance to sit down an appropriate distance apart from each other to discuss the recent week’s events and how we’ve been responding.

Our guests today are the Reverends Carrie and Nik Combs. Carrie is the full-time curate at Trinity in Newtown. Nik, who's originally from Idaho, is a part-time priest-in-charge at Trinity in Torrington and works part-time  at Class Cycles in Southbury. Carrie, who grew up in Cheshire, was ordained a priest in 2018 and Nik was ordained a priest in 2017. Carrie and Nik, who are married, met pursuing their Masters in Divinity at School of Theology at Sewanee. Carrie and Nik were married in 2016 at St. Peter’s in Cheshire, Carrie's home church. Carrie is 29 and Nik is 32, which matters as we are going to talk about what it is like for them as a young married clergy couple.  We start our conversation talking about their time at Sewanee as a young engaged couple, and how they came to Connecticut. They moved to Connecticut without any jobs, they decided together to have Carrie find a full-time position in an established parish in a more traditional curate role. Carrie and Nik, although they work in two separate parishes, they have discussed the possibility of collaboration (something they have done for Christmas services) and what that would look like serving together in one parish, something other clergy couples have done.  Karin asks how ministering to folks of various ages is for Nik and Carrie being young adults. Nik jumps right in stating that it is something he has thought about a lot, and that it isn’t so much ministering to different generations but rather ministering to people in different places of their life. Nik states that the pressure he has felt is that there is a stereotype that the voices of Millennials (he identifies as one), especially Millennials in leadership, are not heard. He also says that there is a major complication of disseminating communication across generations.   Nik discusses how he tackles that challenge through a communications portal. Carrie talks about her experience as a curate and the difference between that and a priest-in-charge position.   Alli asks what it is like to manage this full-time curate position and a part-time priest-in-charge one, which is almost like a reversal of traditional church and gendered roles. Both Nik and Carrie said they are still drawing what a diagram of managing this lifestyle is like. Nik states that it is like looking into another world of other priest roles.   Carrie and Nik talk about what their prayer life is like in their relationship, including sometimes reciting morning prayer together and singing together in their cupola. Collaboration is very much a part of their marriage and positions as priests in Connecticut.

Surprisingly though there were times that I was not fully aware or awake to this Divine connection I have called mediumship. Some people have questioned my Divine connection and how I could have not known it was there, some have said that I have made it up. The truth of the matter is, I lived in fear. Understanding ourselves and the truth of who we are is not always so cut and dry. In each of our lives we have challenges and lessons to that help us to learn, grow and uncover our souls truths. These truths of our soul are with us always, although we may not be ready to fully know them or integrate them into our lives. The soul truths are unique to each individual. Though we may seem to have some things in common with others, we all have our very own amazing soul truths to live and utilize. Our souls journey is also unique. And, while it may take another less time to know their truths, our souls have personal work to do in order to live in alignment with our soul-self. This is the why my personal soul truths did not fully show themselves earlier in my life. I had lessons to learn first! Part of my gift is that I have a knowing also called claircognizance. This knowing side of me is how I have always been able to help or guide others. The knowing was always the strongest part of my gift. I began to really understand this knowing I had was different then what others knew when I was in my early 30's. My friends would always ask how do you know this? The funny thing is, I thought everyone had this knowing. It wasn't until a friend was having some relationship issues that the truth finally dawned on me. I was doing what I normally do with a friend in need, comforting her with loving guidance that seemed to magically appear. When she turned to me and said how did you know that? I was shocked, I turned to her and asked how did you not know this? Our conversation quickly shifted away from the topic when the kids came in the room and we forgot all about it. This moment stayed with me for days, and awakened the thought, just how I did know the things I knew. But low and behold I was not ready to look at my truths fully yet. The knowing stayed and the guidance of the Angels although hidden from view was just “there”, I just couldn't put it all together. It was as if I was in a dream, a dream of a girl stuck in a life that made little sense. Speaking of dreams, I have always had visions of loved ones in my dreams. Some I know, others are just faces of people I don't know. The nudges from the Angels kept me questioning and pursuing answers. I found books on Angels and mediums that sparked questions and more thought. One nudge I received was to work with children. This was a nudge that had been with me my whole life. I began to see signs and advertisements for foster parenting. At the time the campaign theme was Be a Hero, Be a Foster Parent. Every sign, billboard and advertisement spoke directly to me. The day I told my husband that I wanted us to be foster parents I thought he would say I was crazy. We had just had our fourth child and were in the midst of selling our house. But by the miracle of all miracles he loved the idea. This is how I knew it was Divine calling. I called our local Department of Children and Families and signed us up. We started classes, went through all the back ground checks and paper work needed to become a foster family. Our children were even interviewed by the DCF staff. On the last week of class just a before our license was finalized we got our first placement! He was a 10 month old baby boy, the same age as our youngest. We purchased a second crib highchair and car seat at a consignment boutique. Jose' stayed with us for one week. He was a sweet baby that could drink a bottle dry so quickly your head would spin! After Jose' we took in thirteen other foster children during a six year period. We did take time off in between some of the placements, to rest and regroup. Just before the time we took our last placement I knew we were done being a foster family. I filed the proper paperwork with our state with ease and a joyful heart knowing we had served our fellow man and God. Our family spent the six years sharing their love, toys and house openly with the fourteen angels that came our way. We were all blessed with the experiences we shared with each of the children that came into our lives. During the most recent years of my life, I have learned the most valuable of all lessons, to let go of fear. The fear that stopped me from speaking my truth and living in my souls alignment. The fear that held the truth of my soul truths from being understood. The fear that I am less than or not equal to others. The fear that the past will revisit until I forgive it and release it. Fear that others will think, well what ever others will think of me. Fears that top other fears and hide behind shit to cause pain or throw me off my path. The lesson to let go of fear came from the Angels. The loving guidance helped me to see the truth, that we are all children of God. Our destiny is to love openly and fully with God. When we see each other through the eyes of God we can appreciate, accept each other for who we are. The struggles of others are not ours to live but ours to pray for. We can be kind, loving and understanding if we choose. Low and be hold choice is key in obtaining our soul alignment. The judgements we carry become the fear that contains us from living in our soul truths and alignment. Shedding the fear with love is the cure we all search for. Angels are God's divine love. Angels are available to guide and assists us. We can all call on Angelic assistance and guidance whenever needed. Simply call them with love, while you ask for what you need help with. You can write your need down or say it aloud either works just fine! Then sit back and wait for the magical miracle of the Divine guidance to come your way! Simplistic and profound! Mike Brooks is a podcast pioneer and marketing guru coming to the Boiling Point from Southbury, Connecticut. Our host, Greg Hemmings, met him and Dino Dogan at this past NMX (New Media Expo) and soon was on Mike and Dino's Road to TED podcast. Check out the episode of Boiling Point with Dino Dogan here.   Mike studied IT and worked in the business for 10 years when a taekwondo school he attended was about to close up due to hard times. Mike saw this as a perfect opportunity and quit his day job in IT to help rebuild and market the martial arts school. Mike put a great deal of effort into the school and specifically its digital footprint. This was at the leading edge of when the internet was really starting to mean something for small business.  Mike created content for the school in terms of blogs, social media, videos, podcasts, etc. and soon the school at six times the number of students it had when Mike first started. Others in the community started to notice and within six years other business owners would hire Mike to consult for them and duplicate his great results. After 10 years of being involved with the martial arts school, Mike sold his share back to his partner and already had a full fledged marketing consultancy firm. He hasn't looked back since.   Mike is the owner of Nuclear Chowder, a marketing firm that designs and hosts websites, search engine optimization, guides business in social media, develops apps for mobile devices, and something we were very interested in, reputation management. So why would someone come to Nuclear Chowder to have their reputation managed? Well, imagine you get arrested for a crime you didn't even commit. The media writes about how you may have committed this crime and its all over newspapers, television, and the web. A few months later, the case is thrown out or you are found innocent, but all that media coverage is still out there. When a client googles your name, all they see is all sorts of bad stuff, and anything positive about you is down three pages in the results. This scenario could be disastrous for people in business and can be financially crushing. However, if you contact Nuclear Chowder, Mike has a process that can bring back more of the positive content about you and drop the negative stuff. Namely, Mike would start to flood the internet with the clients own content including websites, blogs, posts to social media, pictures, videos, etc.   As mentioned before, Mike was a pioneer in the podcasting game, starting back in 2006. For Mike, podcasting is another form of marketing. Consumers on the internet want content in every medium. The more content you put out to the world, the more credible you become, and things like podcast allow you to build a rapport with your customers without ever meeting them. There are millions of blogs on the internet and endless videos on the internet, but only around 250,000 podcasts (plus or minus). Consider as well that podcasts are more intimate and personal, and it is the next best thing to actually having a conversation in someone's living room. Mike's suggestions for podcasters are simple. Sound like you are smiling when you are talking, try to post at the same time each week, have charisma, and be authentic. Having engaging guests is important as well as being consistent.    Return on investment may not seem apparent from loading the internet with content, but it works. Mike has been hired because of his podcast, but more often its a combination of all of the content he puts out into the world. Content can be just as good as a business referral because people truly believe you are an authority and your content builds trust.   Links   Mike's Social Media/Contacts Learn more about your ad choices.
