From the sublime to the ridiculous, we're getting esoteric this week. Not to mention erotic. And not a little neurotic to boot. Jerry drops in to discuss Mandala (1971), directed by Akio Jissoji and Things To Come (1976), directed by Derek Todd. Buddhism! Politics! Pleasurebots! Pissville! It's all happening this week! We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Mandala by skipping ahead to the 1:28:56 mark, and for Things To Come by skipping ahead to 2:16:42. City health officials report that the Legionnaires' outbreak is declining, but confirmed cases could still rise as more people seek treatment and earlier cases are verified. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn District Attorney's office hopes an Ohio man arrested for throwing a sex toy at a Liberty game can help them identify other people doing the same. Finally, the Trump administration appears to be targeting companies known to employ unauthorized workers to achieve its goals regarding immigration arrests.
Are this summer's wildfires a dress rehearsal for what's to come? Memorial University's Angela Carter on a warming earth and transitioning off fossil fuels + Craig Pardy, MHA and shadow fisheries critic, joins fish harvesters in calling for a reopening of the Atlantic mackerel fishery.
A few months ago we were surprised to learn that HG Wells, the famed 19th century science fiction writer, survived long enough to comment on film adaptations of his work. This is a silly thing for us to be surprised by, because the man was only 66 when Island of Lost Souls, the movie that he commented on, came out. Just a few years later Alexander Korda hired Wells himself to adapt Wells' futurism work into Things to Come (1936), working with a crack team of art directors and artists including William Cameron Menzies as director, Vincent Korda officially acting as art designer, and a cadre of others including a mostly cut sequence by Hungarian experimental filmmaker László Moholy-Nagy. It's a beautiful film that looks at a future that Wells imagines is not a technocratic dystopia even though that's what he portrays.

(This podcast was previously recorded and published on May 15, 2020) Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... I made a trip out of my house on May 5, 2020. I had not been out since January 15, 2020. I looked at the mountains in Colorado Springs where I now live and said, "The mountains are still here! I'm glad to know that." Pam Padgett, a member of the body of Christ who also knows the Bible, laughed. We both know a scripture telling us there will be a time when the mountains will be gone. Revelation 16:20 Because of the Bible, we know many things will be removed by God during the last days of this earth. But because it is God doing this, we who belong to God are not troubled. Things coming in the last days ... ***** Concerning the mountains being removed: Revelation 16:20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. During the last days of the great tribulation and the wrath of God upon this earth, many things will happen: Revelation 8 2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. 6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. 7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. 8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. 10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; 11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. 12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. 13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound! *** II Peter 3 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless. *** Revelation 21 1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and HE will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And HE that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. *** Isaiah 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. *** I Corinthians 15 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. *** Matthew 24:7-8 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Creativity - Episode 424 - Things to Come -If you are listening to this podcast episode, that means I have a few more minutes on my podcasting hosting time - just enough for this episode. I am taking some time off from recording to concentrate on writing episodes that are more Direct, interesting, and just generally a better experience. One of the subjects that I know I will be delving into is Shakespeare because that was my major in graduate school - and covering his works on a direct level that gives you confidence that you understand what can sometimes be confusing material. Of course I also want to emphasize creativity and approaching Shakespeare, as well as how Shakespeare's works or precursor to AI. Of course any examination of creativity includes a closer look at AI - especially in education - and I will be spending a great deal of time reading and delving into the subject matter.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

Did you know there are more Sabbaths mentioned in the Bible than just the seventh day of the week? Did you know all Sabbaths are described as a “shadow of good things to come” (Hebrews 10:1). What are those “good things” that make up the superior “substance” (the most important, valuable, and enduring truths symbolically foreshadowed)? It's time to move up to the next level.Comparative religion website: www.thetruelight.net Ministry website: www.shreveministries.org The Catholic Project website: www.toCatholicswithlove.org Video channel: www.YouTube.com/mikeshreveministries All audio-podcasts are shared in a video format on our YouTube channel. Mark 13: 1-2
The A-bomb had contributed to this soft reign of terror. It had also fired a period of excitement and fertility in the neglected field of science fiction. Before WWII, sci-fi in film was widespread, with examples such as Lang's hallmark Metropolis, Things To Come, the silent 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Lost World, and serials populated by Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The war had shifted the focus, to combat and military films, propaganda, home-front boosterism, and escapism. The war also brought awareness of the application of science to conflict. Atomic power had brought an entirely new set of horrific sci-fi characters --- as embodied by Bela Lugosi, played by Martin Landau in the film Ed Wood: “Today it's all giant bugs. Giant spiders, giant grasshoppers...” Increasingly, sci-fi enemies came from the outside, from other worlds loosening tremendous power upon the Earth, or beings from our world mutated and terribly changed by atomic power. Or sometimes, both. Aliens of all types were lurking every week at the Bijou in the 1950s. The Day The Earth Stood Still. The Thing From Another World, The War Of The Worlds. Some of these films were silly, and as characterized by Lugosi/Landau --- giant bugs. Some became classics, despite their pedigree, as in the film Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The 1956 offering had an unlikely path to greatness, but it's stood the test of time because of the themes that run through its bones.Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark
