Paranormal investigator, author, and filmmaker Jason Hewlett takes a deep dive into some of Canada's most legendary cryptids and supernatural phenomena. Jason shares the chilling childhood encounter that launched his lifelong exploration of the unknown, and we dig into the terrifying lore of the Wendigo—part cryptid, part cautionary tale—tied to Indigenous traditions. We also explore his thoughtful approach to researching these stories with cultural sensitivity and hear about the strange and unsettling moments that occurred during his recent Wendigo investigations, which will form the basis of an upcoming book and documentary. In addition to the Wendigo, Jason discusses his work on Cursed Waters, a film exploring the legend of Ogopogo, Canada's most famous lake monster, and shares details about his current Bigfoot research in British Columbia. From lake creatures to forest spirits to elusive Sasquatch sightings, Jason reflects on what these phenomena reveal about the mysterious world around us. Whether you're a believer, skeptic, or somewhere in between, this conversation is packed with insight and eerie intrigue. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sometimes....Dead is Better This week, we are joined by returning guest, Anastasia Elfman to dig up the horror of Pet Sematary (1989), the unsettling Stephen King adaptation directed by Mary Lambert and starring Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, Fred Gwynne, and a murderous toddler you'll never forget. They unpack what makes this film so brutally effective—especially for parents—while roasting Louis Creed for being the world's worst doctor, husband, and homeowner. From zombie cats to Wendigo lore and that unforgettable Zelda nightmare fuel, we're diving deep into grief, guilt, and gore. Plus, a few rants about embalming logistics, 80s parenting fails, and the movie's weirdly psychic side characters. Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! What is the collective noun for Wendigo? Pack? Herd? A Disturbance, perhaps? Welcome to part three of Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo". Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! Is Wendigo the plural of Wendigo? Aaaah! It's part two of Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo". Still moody and atmospheric, but less with the accents this week. Though it's still that French Canadian so bad it isn't even offensive anymore. Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! This week begins a four part mini-series, so trap in, y'all. That's right, for the next month, you're getting Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo". It's moody, it's atmospheric, and it's full of accents! Well, really one nearly indecipherable accent that I think was an attempt at French Canadian but somehow sounds like Count Dracula doing an offensive cajun dialect. On this episode of Blurry Creatures, Josiah shares his chilling encounter with what he believes to be a demonic wendigo creature. When the forrest suddenly became dark and cold, Josiah had an encounter he'll never forget. As his story unfolds, we explore the darker threads of generational oppression and the spiritual forces that linger in its wake. A gripping conversation that blurs the lines between myth, traumatic experiences, and a creature that was so real that it left claw marks on his back. I had such a fun and fascinating chat with today's guest – long time bigfoot researcher and host of World Bigfoot Radio/World Bigfoot Central, Duke Sullivan. Duke is hilarious and had me cracking up with laughter the whole time and marvelling at his knowledge about our forest friends and other cryptids. We talked about the Tsul'Kalu from the deep south, the Wendigo from the north, Little People, mindspeak, witches and so much more! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A popular beastie in today's culture; it holds much more significance with the Algonquian peoples with which it originated. It's also known as the "witiko" and "weeghteko" among others.Originally it was a malevolent spirit or even just a particularly wicked individual, with variations in representation among whichever local folklore it was associated with. Modern variations introduced a cannibalism aspect as well as depictions including a deer-skull for a head complete with antlers. There have always been the same common denominator, however: wendigos are the embodiment of greed and excess. This episode involves the novella by the legendary Algernon Blackwood, published in 1910 in the collection The Lost Valley and Other Stories.A more classical take, and nonetheless incredibly haunting.Music: "Damaged" by Lucas King

You may have heard of Tom Slick, the man who financed many early expeditions in search of Sasquatch both the in US and internationally. But did you know he was also a scientist, military man, inventor, philanthropist, and much more? Learn the strange, fascinating and tragically short history of Thomas Baker Slick Jr. with Heather Moser, Mark Matzke and guest host Aaron Deese. Email - Monsteropolis@smalltownmonsters.com SHOW NOTES Monsteropolis: Tom Slick Welcome back, you lawless knaves. READER MAIL - got at least one - HERE IT IS, from our friend Christine! — Hi Guys, First of all, congratulations on the success of your 10th anniversary Kickstarter! I can't wait to see your new films, especially The Siege of Ape Canyon and The Kinderhook Creature. I listened with interest to the Monsteropolis episode where you described the changing nature of the appearance of the Wendigo in popular culture from an emaciated human being to one with antlers and a stag's skull. In the fall last year I became aware of the legend of the Leshy of pagan Slavic culture through an excellent YA novel called "Where the Dark Stands Still" by Polish writer A.B. Poranek. When I googled the Leshy I was astounded to see images of what I recognised as the Wendigo. So this got me thinking - is there a Slavic influence at play here too? Perhaps this is something you could look in to! I am really looking forward to the book and film regarding the Wendigo which I understand may come out next year. I have been fascinated by the Wendigo since reading Algernon Blackwood's novella and there is one passage in particular that always sticks in my mind: "And soon after he slept, the change of wind he had divined stirred gently the reflection of the stars within the lake. Rising among the far ridges of the country beyond Fifty Island Water, it came from the direction in which he had stared, and it passed over the sleeping camp with a faint and sighing murmur through the tops of the big trees that was almost too delicate to be audible. With it, down the desert paths of night, though too faint, too high even for the Indian's hair-like nerves, there passed a curious, thin odor, strangely disquieting, an odor of something that seemed unfamiliar—utterly unknown." Cyclops is Waiting for Me - An X-Men: The Animated Series Weekly Recap
Despite what IMDb told us that last week's bonus episode for the Hulk vs. Wolverine movie being inspired by Incredible Hulk Issue 181, this episode actually more closely follows Wolverine's debut issue. While it definitely takes some creative license, this encounter between Logan, Banner and the Wendigo hits that classic vibe for us (and has a more satisfying ending than the straight to home video movie did).Cyclops is Waiting for Me is our now bi-weekly podcast series where we are going back and watching EVERY-SINGLE-X-MEN-ANIMATED-EPISODE we can find. The discussion today is about the panic of the GOP as their House majority slips away and Trump withdrawing his nomination of Rep. Elise Stefanik to be U.N. Ambassador. Then, John interviews award-winning comedy writer Felipe Torres Medina about his life in comedy and his new book “AMERICA, LET ME IN: A CHOOSE YOUR OWN IMMIGRATION STORY”. And winding it up, Simon Moya-Smith and Julie Francella are back for their indigenous segment "We're Still Here". This time they chat with John and listeners about Trump removing Native flags from a VA medical facility in Phoenix, colleges cancelling Native convocations to comply with Trump's DEI order, and the spooky mythology of the Wendigo. Emmet Kennedy is joined by racing analyst Adam Mills and jockey George Gorman for Part 2 of The Final Furlong Podcast's comprehensive Cheltenham Festival Review, focusing exclusively on the standout novice chasers and hurdlers. We analyse the Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novices' Hurdle star Kopek Des Bordes, alongside placed contenders William Munny and Romeo Coolio, discussing what lies ahead for them and identifying beaten horses primed for handicap success. Adam makes a compelling case for Turners Novices' Hurdle winner The New Lion as next year's Champion Hurdle star, while the entire team agrees The Yellow Clay and Final Demand could dominate Cheltenham in seasons to come. Attention then shifts to key runners from the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle—Jasmin De Vaux, The Big Westerner, Derryhassen Paddy, and Wendigo—and we pinpoint future stars in Air Of Entitlement for the Mares' Chase and Sixandahalf as a potential Champion Hurdler. Plus, we explain why shock Triumph Hurdle winner Poniros deserves serious respect, discuss the dramatic Arkle Chase victory of Jango Baie and its implications for beaten favourite Majborough, and debate whether Ballyburn should revert to hurdles after a costly defeat in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase. Could Lecky Watson emerge as a Gold Cup contender? Finally, the team highlights overlooked Champion Bumper runners and key handicappers to follow ahead of Aintree and Punchestown. Ever felt hangry? Like, really, really hangry? So hangry that you might just turn into a supernatural, flesh-craving monster? Well, you're in luck because this week, we're diving headfirst into the legend of the Wendigo—a creature that takes "snacking" to a terrifying new level. From its origins in Algonquian folklore to modern-day sightings (and possibly a Wendigo diet plan we can't endorse), we're breaking down what makes this beast so chilling. Is it a warning about greed and gluttony? A cautionary tale for winter survivalists? Or just an ancient way of saying, "Dude, don't eat your friends"? We'll cover all that and more, including some very questionable Wendigo-related crimes, and why you probably don't want to go camping in Canada anytime soon. Al that and more this week on Hysteria 51! — You durn foolWaves of hot lava washed down my throat, past my lungs, and hit my stomach like an acid avalanche.By day, Nick Sipe works as a mild-mannered IT manager for a Fortune 150 company. By night, he mostly recovers from the workday, but occasionally finds time to write. He enjoys writing Twilight Zone-style short stories, mostly horror and light sci-fi. Nick is currently shopping his debut novel, “Midnight Springs,” to literary agents. “Midnight Springs” is the first in a planned horror-Western series that sends classic monsters (think Frankenstein, Van Helsing, the Wolfman) to the Wild West to tangle with their American counterparts (think witches, the Headless Horseman, the Wendigo). Nick live in Gastonia, North Carolina. He is a member of Charlotte Writers Club.
Hey fiends! This week's rebroadcast goes out to all our Yellowjackets fans! If you're knee deep in fan theories but you're unfamiliar with the Wendigo, you need to give this episode a listen! If you have no idea what I'm talking about...listen anyway, this episode is one of our best! Be prepared to sleep with the lights on for a while though, because this is a scary one! _________________________ "The Wendigo lives in the most frightening of places, a place from which there is no escape. Once the Wendigo awakens, it tears through this place with unimaginable patience and force, creating a path of nightmares, and consuming everything it sees. It is a place so close and familiar, yet so mysterious and difficult to explore that only a fraction of it is known to humankind. " This week we explore North America's most famous folkloric monster, The Wendigo. We discuss it's human origins and the kind of world that created it. This episode is a deep dive into a monster with surprisingly real and deep roots, culminating in the true story of an horrific event. The wendigo is an extremely fascinating and blurry line between fantasy and reality and we're still not sure what to think of it. Perhaps the scariest thing about a Wendigo is that it is impossible to tell whether it is real, or just a figment of the imagination. Either way, this monster leaves a trail of destruction unlike any other cryptid. Click to learn more WWBD Merch Buy your WWBD swag here! Join the Conversation

In the remote Canadian wilderness, an ill-fated hunting trip turns into a nightmare when one of the guides vanishes into the night, leaving behind only his screams of burning feet and a trail of something far more terrifying than any beast of the forest.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version. https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateInfo on the next LIVE SCREAM event. https://weirddarkness.com/LiveScreamInfo on the next WEIRDO WATCH PARTY event. https://weirddarkness.com/TVIN THIS EPISODE: “The Wendigo” is a novella written by Algernon Blackwood. It was originally published in the 1910 collection “The Lost Valley and Other Stories” which I've placed a link to in the show notes. The story involves a hunting party that gets separated in the Canadian wilderness in search for moose. One of the party members is abducted by the legendary Wendigo. Fellow author Robert Aickman once said of the story, it's "...one of the (possibly) six great masterpieces in the field". Here's hoping you agree with him.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Disclaimer and Lead-In00:02:32.616 = Show Open00:04:33.284 = A Brief Look At The Author00:07:38.615 = The Wendigo, Part 100:22:54.738 = The Wendigo, Part 200:48:19.248 = The Wendigo, Part 301:09:00.423 = The Wendigo, Part 401:33:13.209 = The Wendigo, Part 501:54:15.127 = The Wendigo, Part 602:00:44.066 = Show Close02:01:49.052 = BloopersSOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…Episode Page at WeirdDarkness.com: https://weirddarkness.com/TheWendigo“The Wendigo” by Algernon Blackwood: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/n8bff63y=====(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.
