Large Vessel Occlusion strokes (LVOs) account for approximately 20% to 36% of acute ischemic strokes but results in up to 90% of acute ischemic deaths and 60% of post ischemic stroke disability. Treatment with mechanical thrombectomy is now the Gold Standard, yet we are still struggling to get patients to the comprehensive stroke center or thrombectomy capable stroke center in a timely manner to ensure intervention eligibility. The goal is to improve operational efficiencies within your stroke program to increase the number of patients who are eligible and have positive interventional outcomes. While overall program achievement is usually a multidisciplinary group effort, the Stroke Coordinator is often the driving force. What does it take for the Stroke Coordinator to lead these efforts?During this podcast, Corazon Senior Vice President, Michelle Luffey and Penn State Health Stroke Program Coordinator, Cesar Velasco discuss:Some of the current challenges in maximizing the number of patients with Large Vessel Occlusion stroke who ultimately undergo Mechanical Thrombectomy. How program optimization can help to increase the volume of patients eligible for mechanical thrombectomy and ultimately successful interventional outcomes. How to define and build the skillset needed as a Stroke Coordinator to ensure your program's success.Disclaimer: Please note that Corazon Podcasts are intended for individuals affiliated with hospitals, health systems, physician practices, and other healthcare delivery organizations. Why Offer Thrombectomy Services? A Best Practice Perspective

Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the US, but can we do more to improve those statistics? The answer is yes! Clinical trials have validated significant benefits of Thrombectomy when available for the treatment of stroke. The DAWN and DEFUSE-3 Trials have expanded the window for Endovascular Thrombectomy up to 24 hours for patients with Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO). While LVOs only account for approximately 1/3 of all strokes, they account for 60% of all disability and 90% of all mortality. Endovascular Thrombectomy can change those outcomes.Benefits of an immediate treatment response to a stroke or “brain attack” have paralleled the benefits of coronary intervention in treating a “heart attack.” With this medical evolution, the use of clot busters, angioplasty, and stents are quickly becoming the standard arsenal for stroke treatment – and, as in coronary intervention, time is of the essence. With so much potential for quality outcome improvement, society-sponsored advocacy is proving very successful in influencing legislative changes, including mandating suspected Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO) patients be taken to the nearest Thrombectomy Capable Center. Even where legislative changes have not yet occurred, many EMS providers have begun adopting these protocols. The potential loss of this inbound EMS traffic may affect your bottom line.Join our experts for this important podcast that:Reviews the Thrombectomy service and its potential effect on current stroke outcomesExamines current efforts to change legislation to route LVO patients to Thrombectomy Capable CentersPresents a client implementation journey for Mechanical Thrombectomy and the positive impact the expanded services are having in the communityOrganizations that have already completed the foundational work associated with a formal stroke program are often much better positioned for neuro-interventional program implementation than they perceive.
