She is a Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR). She also served as Councilor for Communications of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Chair of the Research and Technology Committee. Dr. Benavides is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in the multidisciplinary aspects of diagnostic imaging. She has been a co-investigator in NIH funded grants for the past 10 years and recently served as the Chair of the expert panel to update the 2012 ADA/FDA recommendations for dental radiography. Her clinical practice is dedicated to interpretation of 2D and 3D dentomaxillofacial imaging.    The two-part recommendations were updated by an expert panel which included radiologists, general and pediatric dentists, a public health specialist, and consultants from nearly every dental specialty.  Dr. Benavides shares some of the main takeaways and new updates is that that lead aprons and radiation collars are no longer recommended. This recommendation includes all dental maxillofacial imaging procedures and applies to most patients.  Also, a recommendation to avoid routine or convenience imaging, and focus instead of patient-centered imaging, based on the patients' specific needs. And, when possible, previous radiographs should be obtained.   Dr. Benavides shares that imaging must be patient‑specific, not protocol-driven, and encourages dentists to ask the following questions before dental imaging: "Do we need this additional information? Is this additional information going to change my diagnosis, or it's going to contribute to the diagnosis and treatment planning?"   The group discusses some of the possible challenges, and opportunities, to implement these new recommendations.    Resources:    This episode is brought to you by Dr. Jen Oral Care. Learn more about Dr. Jen.  Read the full clinical recommendations American Dental Association and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology patient selection for dental radiography and cone-beam computed tomography  Find more ADA resources on X-Rays and Radiographs.  Stay connected with the ADA on social media! Guests for this episode include Dr. Julie Adamchick, post-doctoral candidate at Cornell University and AABP liaison to the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), Dr. Daryl Nydam, Professor of Dairy Production and Health Management at Cornell University and incoming AABP Vice-President, and Dr. Michael Capel, Perry Veterinary Clinic and Past-President of AABP. This episode of Have You Herd? is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and the PYRAMID(R) line of vaccines, a premier choice to protect calves from BRD. Get relentless protection at PyramidVaccines.com. Advances in youngstock management and reproduction programs has provided an opportunity for dairy producers to utilize gender-selected semen to maintain the correct number of replacement heifers while taking advantage of the increased revenue from the sale of beef-on-dairy calves. Producers should develop a strategy with their dairy clients to plan three years in advance for the number of replacement heifers the herd will require. The veterinarian can play a role in not only assisting with implementation of these programs, but also monitoring reproductive performance and semen selection strategy monitoring to ensure success. The value that is added from maximizing beef-on-dairy calves produced can be equivalent to $2-$3 per cwt of milk. Our guests also provide tips for avoiding pitfalls and what to discuss with clients during the implementation and monitoring phase of this program.  Cornell University has developed a tool to assist veterinarians in consulting with clients on use of gender-selected and beef semen in their herds. You can find Semen Solver 2.0 at this link.  If you have feedback about the tool, please contact Dr. Julie Adamchick at jms349@cornell.edu.

Episode 117: Towards an Equitable and Inclusive Future: LGBTQIA+ ArchitectsWhat would an equitable future for LGBTQIA+ people look like? What's the role of architecture in designing an equitable future?Expanding our equity, diversity, and inclusion series, episode 117 explores the perspectives of LGBTQIA+ architects and designers working to create a more equitable future for all. One of the earliest episodes in this series, “Voices from the Future of the Profession,” episode 016, was recorded in 2020. Since that recording date, a number of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills and legislation have been passed across the United States - risking protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. As architects and designers, we believe there is much more we can do to create safe and inclusive policies and spaces in the built environment and within our communities. We've invited leaders to share their stories and discuss what matters most in this moment of change.Guest Moderator:Dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and visibility of LGBTQIA+ architects, architecture adjacent, and design professionals, Sarah Nelson-Woynicz, AIA, is the Founder of Pride by Design. As a Project Architect with HKS, Inc in Atlanta, Georgia, Sarah's professional practice focuses on commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family markets, while also amplifying and engaging in HKS' justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work. Sarah has served on the AIA Atlanta Board of Directors and currently serves at the AIA Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee, Community Director. Guests:Rajas Karnik is a Project Architect with over 20 years of varied project experience in urban design, transportation, commercial and residential buildings. Raj grew up in India, where he was surrounded by a family of artists. As a child, he spent many days in his father's architecture office and felt it was his destiny to follow in his footsteps. He attended the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai, his father's alma mater, before moving to the United States to pursue his Master of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Raj believes a strong team drives a successful project. It's a combination of personality and communication, but mostly it's about respect. Architecture is one of the few professions where you are literally learning new every day—from different building parameters, to changing client needs and goals, and new consultant teams. He feels that you have to form personal relationships and learn from everyone, so treating everyone equally and with respect is most important.Rajas is also the co-founder and Past President of Build Out Alliance, a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community within the building design and construction industry. It's become increasingly clear that the Turing Test -- determining whether human interlocutors can tell whether a conversation is being carried out by a human or a machine -- is not a good way to think about consciousness. Modern LLMs can mimic human conversation with extraordinary verisimilitude, but most people would not judge them to be conscious. What would it take? Is it even possible for a computer program to achieve consciousness, or must consciousness be fundamentally "meat-based"? Philosopher Ned Block has long argued that consciousness involves something more than simply the "functional" aspects of inputs and outputs.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2026/01/05/339-ned-block-on-whether-consciousness-requires-biology/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Ned Block received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University. Save 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKIPEDIA at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comThis week on the podcast, Mikki speaks to Dr Lise Alschuler — a naturopathic oncologist, professor of clinical medicine, and one of the most respected voices in integrative cancer care worldwide. Dr Alschuler is known for bridging rigorous evidence with deeply human practice, helping people navigate not just cancer treatment, but the long arc of survivorship that follows. Her work spans circadian biology, metabolic health, botanical therapeutics, lifestyle medicine, and the psychology of living well after cancer.Their conversation travels through the evolving landscape of survivorship, delves into what high-quality follow-up care actually looks like, how to integrate whole-person philosophy within a conventional and often fragmented medical system, and what an ideal post-treatment care pathway would include. From insomnia to fatigue, melatonin to magnesium, morning light to meal timing, they unpack the practical tools that genuinely help restore circadian regulation — and why circadian disruption is far more consequential than most oncology guidelines acknowledge. They also explore exercise as a survival enhancer, how to guide intensity safely for those wary of over-exertion, and why maintaining muscle may be one of the most under-recognised cancer-prevention strategies. Adaptogens, botanicals, and supplement selection all feature, with clear insight into what works, for whom, and where caution is needed. They close with a deep dive into insulin resistance, nutrition strategies, carbohydrate restriction, soy, alcohol, processed food, vitamin D, and the broader metabolic terrain influencing recurrence risk.Dr. Alschuler is past-President and past-Board member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and a founding board member and Past-President of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Divorce can feel like you're unravelling from the inside out, and today Dr. Beth Karassik and Louise Zito, Esq. join Susan E. Guthrie to explain why and how you can regain your emotional footing.  If you're overwhelmed, scared, or emotionally flooded in the middle of divorce, there is a scientific reason for it and there are ways to steady yourself, even when everything around you feels chaotic. In this powerful conversation, Susan Guthrie is joined by clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist Dr. Beth Karassik and longtime mediator and collaborative professional Louise Zito, Esq. to break down what's happening in your brain and body during divorce and share practical tools for restoring calm, clarity, and control. Together, they help you understand why your reactions feel so big, why everyday decisions suddenly feel impossible, and what you can do right now to support your nervous system through one of the most destabilizing experiences of your life. Plus, for legal practitioners, discover how Beth and Louise's work can help you re-align, re-center, and rein in the chaos of divorce work. Why This Conversation Matters When you're navigating divorce without understanding what's happening in your nervous system, it's easy to blame yourself, question your decisions, or feel like you're failing. But the truth is this: divorce places an extraordinary cognitive and emotional load on you. When you know why you're reacting the way you are and you have tools that actually help you communicate more effectively, you make better choices, and you're able to protect your well-being through every stage of the process. And for the professionals who support divorcing individuals, understanding these emotional dynamics (and tending to their own regulation) directly affects their ability to guide clients forward. A grounded professional creates a grounded process, leading to healthier outcomes for everyone involved. This conversation supports both sides of the experience: the people living through divorce and the practitioners walking beside them. You Will Learn: Why divorce triggers fear, confusion, and emotional flooding How stress impacts communication, decision-making, and co-parenting Signs that your overwhelm is actually a trauma response Practical grounding tools you can use today Scripts for setting emotional boundaries during conflict How to build a support system that keeps you steady Why the emotional health of your divorce professional affects your experience Insight into the Calma Collective Retreat supporting divorce professionals Download the Calming Exercise Guide from this Episode: Access the grounding tools discussed in this episode. if you have any feedback, please send us a text! Thank you!Welcome to another episode of the CSA's Podcast Vital Times In September 2025, a landmark ruling by a California judge stated that nonphysicians could not use the term “Doctor” in a clinical setting. This was a ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by Three California-based nurse practitioners. They challenged California Business and Professions Code Section 2052, which makes it a misdemeanor for nonphysicians to use “Dr” in clinical settings or advertisements.Judge Jesus G. Bernal wrote in the opinion that using the title “Dr.” by nonphysicians in clinical contexts is “inherently misleading” and amounts to regulated commercial speech. Because of that, it does not fall under free speech protections. The court sided with the state, which argued that allowing nonphysicians to use “Dr.” could confuse patients about who is providing their care. Bernal cited an American Medical Association (AMA) survey showing: 39% of patients mistakenly believed that DNPs are physicians. He concluded that even when nurses disclose their credentials, the risk of confusion remains high in healthcare settings. To help us understand the importance of both the law and the ruling - 3 amazing patient advocates ae joining the show today.Dr. Rebekah Bernard is a family physician in Fort Myers, Florida. She's a founding member and past president of Physicians for Patient Protection, a grassroots advocacy group focused on ensuring physician-led care for all patients and truth and transparency among healthcare practitioners, and has authored two books on scope of practice.Dr. Antonio Hernandez Conte -- Former Chair of CSA Legislative and Practice Affairs Division from 2019 to 2022. Malnutrition should be defined as any diet that results in metabolic derangement. Few Americans suffer from lack of access to calories. But we are unhealthy, with metabolic and chronic diseases increasing steadily. These are true statements, but how we should respond to them individually and societally is controversial. Peter Ballerstedt ("Sodfather of the Ruminati”) earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Georgia and his doctorate at the University of Kentucky. He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 to 1992. He worked in the forage seed industry from 2011 until 2023. He is a member of several national and international scientific societies, participates in related global initiatives, and is a Past-President of the American Forage and Grassland Council. Peter's personal experience has led him to re-examine human diet and health. What he has learned doesn't agree with the advice given for the past several decades. Peter is an advocate for ruminant animal agriculture and the essential role of animal source foods in the human diet. He strives to build bridges between producers, consumers, and researchers across a wide variety of scientific disciplines – increasing awareness of metabolic health and ruminant animal agriculture's essential role in social, economic, and ecological sustainability. Peter has spoken at many different events in the US and internationally. Many of his presentations are available on YouTube. Peter and Nancy live in western Oregon (northwestern USA) with their three dogs, Conor, Noni, and Iris.
