Tour D'oeuvres Podcast

In episode 22 Taber got the chance to talk with Ian Mott, the former guitar-tech and bus-driver for of Montreal. Ian has had close ties with the members of the band and crew since around the time of the band's conception. He continues to drive buses for a number of artists and he has a natural gift for story-telling as well as a very sharp memory. Ian enlightened Taber on many aspects of the band's history and opened his eyes to just how unique their touring "family" really is.

In this episode Taber talks with Kishi Bashi (K for short). This interview is from 2 years ago, before the Tour D'oeuvres Podcast was started. It was the first interview Taber had ever done and as a result he and Jojo decided to make the podcast. To help with the interview, Taber recruited his good friend and previous Tour D'oeuvres guest, Drew Kirby. When this interview was recorded K had just released his 3rd studio album, Sonderlust. Taber and Drew were invited to K's studio to listen to and discuss the album. Unique to this episode is the addition of music throughout the conversation.With his laptop handy K took us through some of the songs on the album and explained different aspects of the writing/recording process. He also shared some of his favorite bands and the groups whose music helped inspire the new album. Other topics include K's background in Jazz, his musical career from his first band, Jupiter One, to playing for Regina Spektor, to joining of Montreal and to eventually headlining tours around the country and around the world. In Episode 20 Taber talks with Liz Wheeler. Liz has been a stage performer for of Montreal for nearly 10 years. Liz tells about meeting Kevin and hearing his music for the first time, in the days before of Montreal. She and Taber discuss Liz's home life in New Orleans, her job as a message therapist, the benefits of performing with a mask and much more.

In this episode Taber talks with Shaun Fleming, the creator and frontman for the band Diane Coffee and the former drummer of Foxygen. They got together before the show in Bloomington, IN, where Shaun now lives. They discuss life in Bloomington and growing up in southern California. Other topics include Shaun's acting career (both voice and "real body"), the Diane Coffee live show, Shaun's musical process and more.

Episode 17 will be the final episode of Vol. 1. In this episode Taber talks with David Barnes, the visual mind behind of Montreal. Taber, being the newest appendage to the visual team at of Montreal, talks with his boss/mentor/friend about their collaborative process and shared history on the road. They discuss David's creative process on and off the road and how he has turned his art into a profitable business for his family. Episode 16 is a 2 part conversation with Boshra AlSaadi, the bassist for TEEN. Part 1 takes place outside the venue, The Mohawk, in Austin, TX and Part 2 was recorded after the show in Mobile, AL. They discuss Boshra's upbringing and her yearly visits to see family in Syria. They talk a bit about music from Syria and her musical roots.

In this episode Taber sits down with Katherine Lieberson, the drummer for TEEN and the eldest of the Lieberson sisters. They discuss gymnastics, family dynamics and Katherine's path from a competetive gymnast to a touring musician.

Taber sits down with of Montreal's tour manager, Michael Wheeler to talk about Martini's, The difficulties of tour managing and Michael's long history with of Montreal.

Episode 0.1 could be called the first of the bonus content. It is not directly affiliated with the of Montreal tour episodes which are airing every Monday. Instead Jojo and Taber sought to talk to other friends of their's who tour in bands. This episode is Jojo talking to Drew Kirby who has been touring with the band Mothers, from Athens, GA, for the past 2 years or so. During that time "Mothers" has criss-crossed America, and several other countries, on a number of tours. Drew gives his take on life on tour.  

Taber and Nikki talk about NPR, tap dancing, a little girl's dream of growing up to be a business woman, and they definitely do NOT discuss Hillary's e-mails.

Taber sits down with Trey in Houston, Texas to talk about Trey's early music career and their shared history with FreekLife (the t-shirt press/house show venue that Taber helped start with Drew Kirby in Athens) and Rowdy Dowdy (the house show/ event space/ art installation/ drag show theatre company where Taber once lived, originally founded in Athens, GA but currently located in Atlanta). JoJo sits down with John Baldwin, formerly of Wild Moccasins, at Walter's in Houston. They review the timeline of knowing each other and catch up on the Houston music scene, and talk quitting bands, finding success in self-contained creative careers, and the homogenization of American cities. Taber hangs out with John Swint again in a back alley near skid row in LA and delves into John's painful past. Then, in Santa Fe, the two hang out under a giant spider and recount a visually stimulating day at the museum/art space/venue/magic portal Meow Wolf.

This episode has 3 parts. The first conversation is with Jojo and Taber. They set up to check-in with each-other before the show in Portland and Jojo just woke up from a nap and was getting feisty. Part 2 is an introduction to John Swint our stage hand/guitar tech. Taber and he sat down to profess their love for one another and to discuss tour but mainly to share their love. The final conversation took place in the parking lot after the show between Taber and Carmen Winters. Carmen is the wife of of Montreal's sound man Mike Nolte. Taber sought to get to know her better and to discuss the struggles of being in a relationship with someone who tours for a living and how touring can effect a relationship.  

Jojo sits down with Trey Rosenkampff before the show in Seattle. Trey is the merch man as well as a talented musician and songwriter. Together they discuss creative pursuits, how they stay creative on the road and interacting with fans at the shows. 

Taber sits down with Jojo in Boise to unload some mid-tour emotional baggage surrounding his past and his Mormon upbringing.

Taber reconnects with a friend from boarding school after the show in Denver. They discuss recent tribulations and failed relationships and find some roads to peace in the fallout.

JoJo and Clayton catch up after the fourth show of the tour and review the course of things so far, talk about getting to know TEEN and overcoming the awkwardness, and Clayton tells some stories from his day wandering in Nebraska.
