Cold Case: How AFIS And DNA Unmasked A Hidden Killer

Margarette Eby was murdered in 1986. In an investigation led by Genesee County (MI) Prosecutor Arthur Busch and the Michigan State Police, two cold case rape-murders were solved using the most advance forensic science available.Key details regarding the case:Date: She was found on November 9, 1986, having last been seen on November 7, 1986.Location: She was murdered in her home at the Mott family estate in Flint, Michigan.Perpetrator: Jeffrey Gorton, a sprinkler system installer who worked on the estate, was identified via DNA evidence and charged in 2002.Outcome: Gorton pleaded no contest in Genesee County, Michigan (Flint) to the murder and was sentenced to life in prison. We walk you through how a partial print on a faucet and carefully stored biological evidence waited years for the right moment, then unlocked a chain of breakthroughs that tied two murders to one man.We break down why so many late‑20th‑century investigations stalled: reliance on eyewitness memory, confessions, and limited lab tests that hinted at guilt but rarely proved identity. Then we zoom into the tools that changed the map. AFIS took fingerprint comparison from magnifying glasses to searchable databases, and STR DNA profiling built full genetic identities from the tiniest trace. With CODIS linking labs across states, an old profile from Flint collided with a new profile from a hotel near an airport, revealing a single serial predator hiding in plain sight. Along the way, we revisit the Mary Sullivan case in Boston and the capture of the Golden State Killer to show how forensic genealogy fills gaps when offenders aren't in criminal databases. What ties it all together isn't luck—it's infrastructure. Proper evidence storage turns slides and swabs into time‑delayed witnesses. Dedicated cold case units create focus where daily caseloads can't. Updated databases make every new arrest, every new algorithm, and every fresh upload ripple across past scenes. For families, a late arrest doesn't erase loss, but it affirms that loved ones were not forgotten. For offenders, the takeaway is stark: time no longer offers cover. If this story moved you, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review telling us which case changed your view of cold case work. Your voice helps fund the labs, units, and training that keep justice from aging out.The Mitten Channel is a network of podcasts.

Every December in Olympia, Washington, the sound of Christmas isn't just bells ringing—it's engines revving. For one incredible day, thousands of bikers fill the streets, each with toys strapped to their motorcycles—dolls, skateboards, games, stuffed animals—all destined for children who might otherwise go without. It's the annual Olympia Toy Run, and for 48 years, this event has brought together riders from all over the region for one shared purpose: bringing joy to kids at Christmas. Those toys, thousands of them, end up at The Salvation Army, where they become part of the Toy and Joy program—helping families across Thurston County celebrate Christmas with dignity and love. Today, we'll talk with Captain Amelia Mott from The Salvation Army in Olympia about how the Toy Run helps meet real needs in the community—and later, we'll catch up with Santa Joe, the biker who started and has led this joyful ride year after year. Because generosity doesn't always come wrapped with ribbons and bows. Sometimes, it comes roaring down the street on two wheels. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. BE AFFIRMED. Listeners get an exclusive look at the process of unraveling cold cases and how a podcast can shed new light on baffling mysteries. The conversation touches on some of the most compelling and unsettling cases that The Final Trace has covered. One such case is the tragic "Gumi Baby" incident from early 2021 in South Korea, where the mummified remains of a three-year-old girl were discovered in an apartment. The hosts and Dailey discuss the chilling twist in the case: the woman initially arrested wasn't the child's biological mother, a fact confirmed by a 99.9999% DNA match. They explore how the case went unnoticed and how the podcast sheds light on disappearances that are "forgotten" rather than "loud."Another case discussed is the strange disappearance of Julie Mott from a San Antonio funeral home in 2015. Mott, who had passed away from cystic fibrosis, was awaiting cremation when her body vanished. The conversation details the civil lawsuit filed by her family against the funeral home for negligence and highlights the theories surrounding the case, including a suspect who was allegedly obsessed with Mott. The discussion also touches on the challenges and emotional toll of investigating such sensitive and heartbreaking cases. Finally, the episode covers the mystery of Michael Negrete, a popular UCLA freshman who vanished from his dorm in 1999, and the story of Brent Brand, a case from Dailey's hometown. They delve into the bizarre details of Negrete's disappearance—his personal belongings were left behind and he was last seen by a friend after an online video game. The hosts and Dailey discuss the various theories and the ongoing efforts to find answers. The episode provides an excellent look into the investigative process, the human element of true crime, and the commitment required to tell these important stories.Listen to the Final Trace here The Final Trace | Podcast on Spotifytallboyradio.com

Send us a textThis week we discuss Ian Hunter and his 1979 LP You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic.  Hunter worked a long time to find success. His band Mott the Hoople were instrumental in advancing glam rock by giving it a rougher edge. David Bowie was such a fan of the band that he even gave them the song "All the Young Dudes" which became the title track for their most popular album, which he also produced. Hunter eventually left Mott the Hoople to concentrate on a solo career and made several albums with Bowie collaborator, and guitarist extraordinaire, Mick Ronson. The results were a series of fine albums, featuring Hunter's (admittedly limited, but expressive voice) against Ronson's classic Marshall stack sound. You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic not only features Ronson, but several members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street band, grounding the album with a solid foundtion. The song "Cleveland Rocks" became an anthem for the birthplace of Rock-n-Roll and "Ships" was even covered by Barry Manilow, becoming one of his biggest hits. But don't let the Manilow cover fool you, You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic is chock full of rock and roll energy and is considered by many as Hunter's crowning achievement. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

“How could this owl, who was born in captivity, lived his whole life in a cage, how could he possibly survive? He's going to be dead in a few days. That's what everybody thought.” – Christine Mott   In February 2023, a Eurasian eagle-owl named Flaco made headlines—and captured hearts—when he escaped from his small enclosure at the Central Park Zoo. Born in captivity and unable to fly or hunt, Flaco defied every expectation. In just weeks, he taught himself to soar across the Manhattan skyline, hunt for his own food, and live as freely as an owl could in a city of concrete and glass. For more than a year, New Yorkers spotted him perched in Central Park, on high-rises, even outside apartment windows—cheering him on as a symbol of resilience and freedom. Today's guest, attorney and lifelong animal advocate Christine Mott, has immortalized Flaco's story in her new children's book, Free Bird: Flaco the Owl's Dreams Take Flight. Told from Flaco's perspective, the book celebrates courage, hope, and the right of all animals to live free—without cages or confinement—while gently encouraging young readers to see captivity through an animal's eyes. This conversation is about Flaco's extraordinary journey, the lessons he left behind, and how one small owl sparked big changes for animals in New York and beyond.   Links: https://lanternpm.org/book/free-bird/

In 2021, Jason Mott won the National Book Award for Hell of a Book. Now, he's out with a new novel called People Like Us, in which two Black writers navigate life in the United States in an era of gun violence. Mott says the book is loosely based on himself – and leans into the audience's tendency to conflate authors with the stories they write. In today's episode, Mott talks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about his personal relationships with American identity, guns, and fiction. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Hop in the Top Ten Time Machine as Dave and Milt, joined by certified grooveologists Al and Ira, crank the dials back to 1972 — a year when rock was raw, soul was deep, and at least one guy was wearing glitter and singing about space. It's time for the ABCs of Rock Draft, where our fab four draft their dream teams of albums released in this musically stacked year. Expect legends like Bowie, Wonder, and the Eagles to fly off the board early — but don't be surprised when someone grabs the Sanford and Son theme or gets misty over a reggae soundtrack. There's glam, grit, gospel, and a live J. Geils record that might punch you in the face. Along the way: hot takes, deep tracks, accidental revelations, and one AI-generated roast session. By the end, you'll either be nostalgic for bell bottoms or in awe of how many stone-cold classics dropped in '72. Either way, you're gonna want to stick around for the final picks, the albums that got left behind, and ChatGPT's judgment from on high.
