Episode 401 | Go Again: Praying with Faith When You See Nothing

Equip and Empower with Christine Caine

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2026 14:04

What do you do when you've prayed and nothing has changed? You go again. In week 5 of our summer series, Christine Caine takes us to Elijah on the summit of Carmel: face between his knees, praying in the dark, sending his servant back to the horizon seven times before a cloud the size of a man's hand finally appears. Most of us go once. Maybe twice. Maybe three times. But the fourth, fifth, sixth time — that's where most people stop. That's where faith gets tested not by what we see, but by what we don't. Elijah heard the sound of rain before a single drop fell. That gap, between what you hear in the spirit and what you can see in the natural, is what Christine Caine calls the faith zone. And it's where every one of us will be asked to live. We've committed to the direction. Now comes the test: what do you do when you keep going and it's still hard? Resilience isn't the absence of exhaustion. It's the willingness to eat the bread God puts in front of you and get up one more time. ✨ If you've ever asked questions like… ✅ I've been praying for the same thing for years and nothing has changed — should I keep going? ✅ How do I pray with faith and expectation when I'm exhausted and discouraged? ✅ What do I do when God feels silent and I can't see anything happening? ✅ How do I hold onto peace without ignoring the reality of what I'm facing? ✅ What does persistent prayer actually look like in everyday life? ✅ Is it okay to feel like giving up — and what do I do when I get there? ✅ How do I keep believing for a miracle when I've seen nothing for so long? …then this is your episode.

There are only three words — and Jesus said them in the middle of a conversation about the end times, almost as an aside. But nothing Jesus says is random. “Remember Lot's wife.” Of the possible 170 women mentioned in the Bible, she is the only one Jesus ever told us to remember. Not Eve. Not Sarah. Not Esther. Not Deborah. Not even his own mother. One woman. Three words. And Christine Caine believes Jesus meant every one of them for you. In week 4 of our summer series, Christine opens Luke 17 and Genesis 19 to ask the question Lot's wife couldn't answer: what happens when your longing for what you're leaving behind becomes greater than your trust in what God has promised ahead? In this episode, Christine Caine unpacks the story of Lot's wife — a woman with no name, a single cameo in the Old Testament, and one of the most arresting warnings in all of scripture. Lot's wife was being led out of destruction by an angel, toward the future God had promised her family, and she looked back. Her misplaced longing led to lingering. Her lingering led to being calcified — stuck forever in a place she was only ever supposed to be passing through. Christine Caine makes the case that this is not an ancient cautionary tale. It is the central challenge of the resilient life: will you keep moving forward into what God has for you, or will you keep looking back at what He's asking you to leave behind? ✨ If you've ever asked questions like… ✅ Why can't I seem to let go of my past — even when I know God is calling me forward? ✅ Is it wrong to grieve what I've lost or left behind, or does that mean I'm looking back? ✅ How do I know the difference between healthy reflection and destructive nostalgia? ✅ I feel stuck — emotionally, spiritually, in old patterns — how do I move forward? ✅ Why does God ask us to leave things behind that feel safe, familiar, or good? ✅ What does it actually look like to fix my eyes on Jesus when the past keeps pulling at me? ✅ Can God still use me if I've already looked back — if I've already gotten stuck? …then this is your episode.

What if the pressure you're under right now isn't a sign that something is going wrong — but that something is being built? We live in a world that treats discomfort as a problem to be solved and pressure as a threat to be escaped. But Christine Caine opens Hebrews with a different diagnosis entirely: the pressure isn't the enemy of your faith. It's the furnace where your faith becomes real. In week 3 of our summer series, Christine Caine closes the Root phase with the message that connects everything: faith, endurance, and pressure don't just coexist — they're designed to work together. James 1 tells us the testing of faith produces endurance. Endurance produces the rooted character that holds a flourishing life. Roots don't grow in comfort. They grow in resistance. This is the last week of the Root phase. Next week everything shifts — and you need this foundation under you before it does. ✨ If you've ever asked questions like… ✅ How do I keep going in my faith when I'm exhausted and everything feels hard? ✅ Is it okay to feel like I want to quit — and what do I do with that feeling? ✅ Why does God allow so much pressure and pain if He's for me? ✅ What does it mean to run with endurance — is that just white-knuckling it? ✅ How do I stop running from hard things and start growing through them? ✅ What does the "great cloud of witnesses" actually mean for me in my daily life? ✅ How do I build roots strong enough to hold everything God is calling me toward? …then this is your episode.

We are diving into another insightful Summer Forecast episode with Dr. Dennis R. Edwards. In our conversation, Dr. Edwards shares insights from his life in pastoral ministry and biblical studies, particularly as we navigate race and ethnicity. Dennis argues that understanding social location is so important as we assess our own culturally-influenced interpretation of biblical texts and theology. While the Bible acknowledges human diversity, he contends that it does not support racial superiority. Drawing on Philippians 2, Dr. Edwards repeatedly calls us back to humility, love, and reconciliation, which transcends racial and ethnic lines, and invites the powerful to relinquish their position so others may be elevated. To learn more from him, consider joining us at Regent this summer for A Biblical Theology of Race and Ethnicity (July 13-17).Dennis's BioRev. Dr. Dennis R. Edwards recently ended his term as the Dean and Vice President of Church Relations at North Park Theological Seminary, where he continues to teach and research the New Testament. He's the author of several books, including Humility Illuminated and Might from the Margins. Dennis has three decades of urban pastoral ministry experience from Brooklyn, New York; Washington, DC; and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dennis holds a BS in chemical engineering and was a high school science and math teacher. He also earned an MDiv in Urban Ministry and an MA and PhD in Biblical Studies. In this special bonus episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas launches an experimental new monthly format: a London events guide covering what's actually on in the city this month. June is arguably London's finest month — 16 to 17 hours of daylight, the longest evenings of the year, and an events calendar absolutely bursting at the seams. Jonathan walks through everything worth knowing about June in London: the major royal events including Trooping the Colour and Royal Ascot, the blockbuster summer exhibitions at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the Royal Academy, the National Portrait Gallery, the V&A, and more, plus what's on in London theater from Shakespeare's Globe to the West End, live music at Wembley and the Roundhouse, and practical tips for surviving — and thriving in — a London heat wave. Trooping the Colour — the monarch's official birthday parade — is the major royal event of the year in 2026. Even without a ballot ticket to Horse Guards Parade, you can experience the procession on the Mall and the balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace by arriving very early and staking out a good spot. Every major summer blockbuster exhibition in London requires advance booking — some, like The Queen's Fashion at The King's Gallery, are already sold out through 2026. Book tickets as soon as you finish listening, even if your trip dates aren't confirmed yet. The Frida Kahlo survey at Tate Modern, the James McNeill Whistler retrospective at Tate Britain, and the Marilyn Monroe exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery are Jonathan's top three must-book exhibition picks for the month. The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition — the world's largest open submission art show, running since 1769 — is a uniquely chaotic, democratic, and wonderful experience where everything on the walls is for sale and any artist can enter. Shakespeare's Globe is staging Much Ado About Nothing from June 11, and Regent's Park Open Air Theatre opens A Midsummer Night's Dream on June 20 — watching Shakespeare outdoors on a long June evening is one of the quintessential London summer experiences. London generally does not have air conditioning in older buildings, hotel rooms, or most tube lines. The first thing you should do after arriving in summer is buy a fan — Jonathan recommends going straight to Argos, Britain's version of a catalog store, for an affordable one. The tube's older lines (Central, Piccadilly) get brutally hot in summer due to London clay absorbing and retaining heat underground. The Elizabeth line is fully air conditioned and runs east-west across the city — use it as much as possible in a heat wave. The National Gallery is experimenting with extended summer evening hours, staying open until 7 PM most evenings and until 9 PM on Fridays from July 1 — Jonathan's suggestion: have an early dinner, then walk over for a free evening of world-class art. Don't try to pack too much in. Pick three or four things you genuinely care about, build your days around those, and leave time to wander, sit in Green Park with a deck chair, or walk along the Thames in the long evening light. June in London is as much about the atmosphere as the attractions. ⠀ Soundbites "The light is the headline for June. You get sixteen to seventeen hours of daylight. Twilight stretches from around eight PM to nearly ten PM. You can have a full day of exploring, sit down for dinner, and still walk home along the Thames and have some daylight." — Jonathan on why June is London's best month. "If you've ever wondered what the best month to visit London is, a lot of people will quietly tell you it's this one." — Jonathan on June in London. Plan your day around it. Get up stupidly early — three, four, five in the morning — get your spot on the Mall and soak up the atmosphere. It'll be like a party atmosphere." — Jonathan on how to experience Trooping the Colour without a ticket. "The Queen's Fashion at The King's Gallery is sold out for the rest of the year, and I know a lot of people are gonna be really disappointed when they try to get tickets and they simply can't." — Jonathan's warning on the most in-demand exhibition of the summer. "The walls are packed from floor to ceiling and everything is for sale. It's chaotic and wonderful. And it's a great way to see up-and-coming artists and established artists side by side." — Jonathan on the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. "Shakespeare under the open sky in one of London's loveliest parks on a warm June evening — it doesn't get dark till ten PM anyway. Enjoy some champagne, enjoy some theater out in the green. That's my top theater pick for the month." — Jonathan on Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. "The first thing you should do after you land is go to what the British call an ironmonger — a hardware store — and buy a fan. Don't skimp. It is essential for Americans traveling in Europe." — Jonathan's number one summer travel tip. "The London clay is a heat sink. It absorbs heat and then it doesn't let it back out. So the tube gets really hot in the summer. If you are prone to heat issues, avoid the tube except the Elizabeth line, which is fully air conditioned." — Jonathan on navigating London in a heat wave. "I sat there in the rain in the 40s, got soaking wet. And I — not exaggerating — almost got hypothermia. It was July. I could not warm up when I got back to the hotel because the heating wasn't on and there weren't enough blankets because it was July." — Jonathan's cautionary tale about British summer weather. "Argos is exactly like Service Merchandise — you go in, there's a big catalog, you pick your thing, and it comes out on a conveyor belt. Get a fan. Don't even look at the weather forecast first. Just trust me — you're going to need a fan." — Jonathan's most practical London summer tip. ⠀ Chapters 00:21 Introduction — Jonathan launches the experimental monthly London events format 01:15 The Feel of June in London — Long days, the light, and why June is special 02:20 June Weather — What to expect, heat waves, and the maritime humidity problem 03:45 Peak Tourist Season — Crowds, hotel prices, and why June still beats July 05:00 Trooping the Colour — What it is, how to see it without a ticket, and Jonathan's tips for getting a good spot 08:30 Royal Ascot — Fascinators on the tube, the royal procession, and how to get tickets 10:00 Wimbledon — The ballot, resale tickets, strawberries and cream, and what to do if you can't get in 11:30 How to Book Exhibitions — Why advance booking is non-negotiable and the Queen's Fashion sellout warning 13:00 Frida Kahlo at Tate Modern — Jonathan's pick and why Tate Modern is worth seeing for the building alone 14:30 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (June 16) — The world's largest open submission art show 15:30 Anish Kapoor at the Hayward Gallery (June 16) — The Cloud Gate connection and why it's worth seeing 16:15 Marilyn Monroe at the National Portrait Gallery — Just opened, book fast 17:00 Barbara Hepworth at the Courtauld Gallery — And why Somerset House is worth a visit anyway 17:45 Schiaparelli at the V&A — Fashion exhibitions and why the V&A excels at them 18:15 Wes Anderson at the Design Museum — A treat for film fans 18:45 James McNeill Whistler at Tate Britain — A sellout show, book immediately 19:30 Wallace & Gromit at Young V&A — The Aardman exhibition Jonathan is hoping to catch in August 20:15 Closing This Month — Mikalojus Čiurlionis at the Royal Academy (closes June 21) and Hokusai at Dulwich (closes June 30) 21:00 Theater — Why June is the best time for London theater 21:30 Regent's Park Open Air Theatre — A Midsummer Night's Dream, Jonathan's top pick of the month 22:00 Shakespeare's Globe — Much Ado About Nothing from June 11 22:30 New West End Openings — To Kill a Mockingbird (June 25) and Cyrano de Bergerac (June 13) 23:00 Long-Running Shows — Lion King, Hamilton, Wicked, Six, Les Mis, and how to get discount tickets 24:00 Live Music — Harry Styles at Wembley, Olivia Dean at the O2, Orville Peck at the Roundhouse 25:00 Practical Tips: Heat — Does London have air conditioning? This summer on Equip & Empower with Christine Caine, we're answering the question: what does it actually look like to live a rooted, resilient, and fruitful life? We're starting not with survival, but with possibility. A rooted life isn't just a stable life — it's a life capable of believing God for the impossible. And most of us have confused those two things. We want to be steady. We want to be safe. But Christine Caine opens this summer series with a provocation: the moment your situation stops being impossible is the moment you stop needing God. Roots aren't just for holding you in place. They're what make everything else possible. In this opening episode, Christine draws the line between intellectual faith and active trust — the difference between believing in God and believing God. For the thing in front of you.  For the miracle that seems too far.  For the promise you've nearly stopped praying for. ✨ If you've ever asked questions like… ✅ What's the difference between believing in God and actually believing God — for my specific situation? ✅ How do I trust God when the people I should have been able to trust have hurt me? ✅ Can God really rebuild what's broken in me before He can use me for something bigger? ✅ How do I step out in faith when I'm still carrying wounds from my past? ✅ Why do I keep praying for a miracle but pulling back from anything that actually requires one? ✅ What does it mean to be rooted — and why does it matter for the life I'm trying to build? ✅ Is it possible to flourish after abandonment, betrayal, or brokenness? …then this is your episode.

Today, we continue our Summer Forecast with Dr. Lanta Davis, who will be teaching "Imagination and Spiritual Formation" at Regent Summer School from June 29 - July 3. In this conversation, Lanta introduces us to how the imagination shapes our lives with God. She brings us back through Christian history to show how visual art, stories, and symbols shape our faith, identity, and understanding of God. We discuss how the contemporary imagination is being influenced by consumerism and political agendas, and reflect on the power of images of Jesus in particular. Lanta takes us deep into the fascinating world of saints' lives and bestiaries as sources that train and model our imaginative capacities, but also gives practical suggestions for ways to practice growing our imaginative capacities through visual art and literature. We hope you enjoy this conversation and consider joining us this summer for a class that may contain unicorns!Lanta's BioDr. Lanta Davis writes and teaches about the sacramental imagination, beauty, and character formation. Her book, Becoming by Beholding: The Power of the Imagination in Spiritual Formation (Baker, 2024), was named one of Christianity Today's best books of the year. Her writing has also appeared in publications such as Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, Christianity Today, Plough, Parabola, and Christian Century. As a Professor of Humanities and Literature for the John Wesley Honors College at Indiana Wesleyan University, she has researched and lectured on topics as diverse as ancient Christian mosaics, sacred architecture, virtues and vices, pilgrimages, memento mori art, and contemporary Irish fiction. In this sensitive and insightful conversation, Warren reflects on his many years practising medicine as a Christian psychiatrist. He considers the intersection of psychiatry, theology, and human experience, emphasizing the importance of understanding people as whole persons on a journey rather than machines or clusters of symptoms.  He points us to the reality of human interdependence as a gift, and our common humanity as wayfarers, persons on a journey, seeking to discern what we need in the particularities of our lives in community with others. Warren will be joining us at Regent from July 6-10 to teach “Christian Faith and Mental Healthcare.” We hope to see you here!(TW) Warren discusses difficult issues, such as suicidality and euthanasia, as well as other mental health challenges.Warren's BioDr. Warren Kinghorn is Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine, Esther Colliflower Professor of the Practice of Pastoral and Moral Theology, and co-director of the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School, and a staff psychiatrist at the Durham VA Medical Center. The two will be chatting extensively about this brilliant band's 1978-2016 life, which was punctuated by periods on inactivity but inevitably continual returns that netted them deep and dedicated international fandom. Founded by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, initial rotating lineups traversed their New Zealand homeland with budget tours, met with degrees of alienation from the established Auckland punk scene. Their psychedelic pastiche contained deep love of Barrett, The Beatles, Velvets, Hendrix, and Arthur Lee, which showed in their rudimentary DIY ethic; a heady formula out of fashionable step and thus triggering retreat back to their Dunedin hometown. However,  surprise success of their first single hitting the top 20 trigged a great leap forward for not only the Kilgours (now joined by future Bats founder Robert Scott), but a newfound communal scene in The Clean's wake that launched not only the Flying Nun label but a score of kindred spirit groups. They eventually achieved notoriety internationally despite periods of pause, and massively influenced a big slab of American indie rock units as well. Langston chronicles the great heights of this band live and on record with dutiful shoutouts to those in their circles who helped elevate them. In this special episode, I'm sharing a full interview conversation recorded in Regent's Park, London, in which I tell my story from the beginning. I talk about growing up as a people-pleaser, always looking for approval from parents and teachers. About how a corporate career built on saying yes to everything eventually left me asking, "where's me in all of this?" About discovering I was infertile, and how that cracked something open and woke me up to how conditional my happiness had become. I share the turning point that changed everything: checking myself into a convent for five days of silence, sitting in front of a barren vegetable patch, and realising I had a blank canvas. A chance to stop living from the outside in and start building a life that was genuinely mine. If you're an ambitious person who's achieved a lot but feels like something is still missing, this conversation is for you.

Democrats and Republicans are cleaning house this week: both Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales resigned from Congress following a wave of scandals. Dr. Drew is taking your calls and wants to know: Are they “innocent until proven guilty” or is the evidence so strong that they just needed to go? Global tensions continue to escalate as the Iran War continues. And in a rare move, President Trump deleted one of his Truth Social posts that many perceived as blasphemy – was this a smart move, or did he bend to the mob? Joining Dr. Drew to answer calls is ophthalmologist and surgeon Dr. Azadeh Khatibi, who fights for bodily autonomy and medical freedom in Sacramento. Dr. Azadeh Khatibi is a fellowship-trained and board-certified ophthalmologist, surgeon, physician-scientist, filmmaker, actress, teacher, and activist. She is currently working on a film about free speech in medicine. She hosts the show WITHIN with Dr. Azadeh Khatibi, MD, MS, MPH on YouTube, Spotify, Rumble and podcast platforms. She was a Regent's Scholar at UCLA, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with Highest Departmental Honors in Molecular, Cell, Developmental Biology. She studied at UCSF in the Joint Medical Program and holds a Master's in Public Health and a Master's in Health & Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley. The Greek Current
A turning point for Europe? Hungary's election and the end of the Orban era

The Greek Current

All of Europe's eyes were on Hungary this past weekend, where voters, in a historic election, brought Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's 16 years in power to an end.  Orban's close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his blocking of multiple EU initiatives - including an urgently needed €90 billion loan for Ukraine - had frustrated many across Europe. At the same time, he presided over a system that saw his party gradually gain control of much of the judiciary, bureaucracy, media, universities, and the economy, which sounded alarms for those concerned about democratic backsliding.  Beyond Europe, this result was also on the White House's radar, and Vice President J.D. Vance even traveled to Hungary to campaign for Orban - the European leader with the closest ties to President Trump. Orban's sweeping defeat raises new questions for European far right populist parties, and its leaders are beginning to question the value of their ties to the MAGA movement. Since our focus is on elections this episode, Greece, which is scheduled to hold national elections in 2027 is also gradually shifting into campaign mode. As parties jostle for a larger share of the electorate, the government looks to be bracing for a number of post-Easter challenges that include rising prices and the ongoing and evolving farm subsidies case. Steven Erlanger, Simon Nixon, Jennifer McCoy, and Nick Malkoutzis join Thanos Davelis as we look at Hungary's landmark election, breaking down what it means for Europe and for the war in Ukraine, the message it sends to those concerned about democratic backsliding in the West, and what takeaways there are for Greece as the country inches toward national elections next year. A little more info on our guests: Steven Erlanger is the chief diplomatic correspondent for The New York Times covering Europe. Simon Nixon is an independent journalist, Kathimerini columnist, and the publisher of the Wealth of Nations newsletter. Dr. Jennifer McCoy is a Nonresident Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She is also Regent's Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University in Atlanta and a research affiliate at the Democracy Institute of Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. Nick Malkoutzis is the co-founder and editor of Macropolis.gr. You can support The Greek Current by joining HALC as a member here.

Summer Programs 2026 is coming! In this catch-up and course preview conversation, Claire and Rachel reconnect with Dr. Elizabeth Sung, who shares her journey through systematic theology to moral theology and questions of spiritual formation. She shares her reflections on the good life and how biblical principles from the gospel can transform our understanding of flourishing here and now. She shares her lived experience and perspectives on the depth and breadth of salvation, love, shalom, and spiritual formation. Lisa offers reflections on the particular pitfalls of "false gospels," the expansiveness of agape love, and the delusions of the false self. Lisa shares her insights and takeaways from the Scriptures, the writings of Dallas Willard, and other key theologians and spiritual writers in ways that have touched and formed her own life.Lisa's BioElizabeth (Lisa) Sung, PhD, is a systematic theologian and spiritual director. She served as Visiting Associate Professor of Theology at Regent College from 2022 to 2025, and continues to teach courses for Regent as a Faculty Teaching Fellow. She now serves as Theologian-in-Residence at The InterVarsity Institute, where she brings her life and her ministry and academic experience 15 years as a full-time theology professor at 3 major seminaries in the US and Canada, preceded by 13 years as a campus minister, mostly serving graduate students at The University of Chicago, to her work. Lisa's primary specialization is theological anthropology, and secondarily (in connection with it), soteriology. Currently, she is writing two books: Race, Racism, and Christian Moral Identity and a volume on theological anthropology. She also speaks on these topics at churches, conferences, and professional development workshops.
