Kevin Barnes started of Montreal in 1996 in Athens, Georgia. The Sunlandic Twins came out in 2005; it was their seventh album. And I remember when that album came out, how it felt like they were suddenly everywhere. And the breakout song from that breakout album was “Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games.” And so, for this episode, I spoke to Kevin Barnes about how that song came together, and what it meant to them then, and what it means to them now. Kishi Bashi's “Omoiyari: A Song Film” has been nominated for an Emmy with the winners announced in September.
Non-Alcoholic beer is basking in the glow of incredible growth and significant improvements in quality and taste, but challenges that could threaten its trajectory remain. In our most technical episode to date we're re-joined by Reducaholic's Tyler McMahon, who helps us break down some of the most important questions facing the young category, such as safety and handling, profit margins, consumer cost perceptions, and the ramifications of an industry still very reliant on contract brewing. Our featured guest is Kevin Barnes, co-founder and Brewmaster of Beaglepuss Brewing, a veteran of non-alcoholic beer already having previously helped start Two Roots Brewing Company, an early upstart in the NA category. Listen as Kevin answers these and other important questions facing the industry today.Referenced in this episode:ReducaholicBeaglepuss BrewingTheBeerShamus.comUltralow Brewing (Facebook group)

On today's episode, I talk to musician Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal. Originally from Ohio, Kevin eventually ended up in Athens, GA where he became part of the Elephant 6 collective, a group that included Apples in Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control and many others. Kevin's music has transformed over time, as his own aesthetic beliefs have changed. Starting off as a Kinks/Paul McCartney-esque surreal indie pop group with albums on Bar/None and Kindercore, morphing from there into electronic pop and then dance pop, the entirety of the band's output given a throughline by Kevin's psyche. Since 2004, Kevin has almost exclusively released albums on Polyvinyl and his latest Freewave Lucifer Fck is out now! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
The psychedelic indie pop project Of Montreal has put out more than 20 albums since their debut in 1997. The latest album, 'Freewave Lucifer fck,' is an experiment in “painting with sound” through despair and euphoria. The band's frontperson Kevin Barnes talks with Roddy Nikpour about their vision for their latest release.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For the 15th anniversary of the landmark of Montreal album, HISSING FAUNA, ARE YOU THE DESTROYER?, Kevin Barnes joins us for a detailed look at how the record was made. After of Montreal had already released multiple albums by this point, Barnes had mostly been writing in a conceptual and fantastical style as a way to avoid writing personal songs. For HISSING FAUNA, Barnes decided to write autobiographically about the difficulties they were experiencing in their personal life during this period. Barnes had gotten married and moved to Norway while expecting their first child and was struggling with anxiety and depression. The isolation and stress they were feeling informed the deeply personal songs that ended up on the record. After splitting with their wife, Nina, part way through the sessions, Barnes finished the remaining songs in Athens while writing from the perspective of the Georgie Fruit character they had created. From alienating band members by working alone to using the studio as an escape to the struggle to earn a living as an artist to the problematic Georgie Fruit character, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying...

Of Montreal singer-songwriter Kevin Barnes calls Kyle Meredith to detail the outfit’s latest record, UR FUN. Together, they dig into its '80s influences, especially the sounds of Cyndia Lauper, Janet Jackson, and the mid-decade pop era. Barnes also connects the political climate of that time to what’s currently happening in Congress, and how those bigger themes find their way through many of these songs. The psychedelic-pop wizard also talks about combining references of art and pop culture into biographical moments, living with dissociative disorder, and simultaneously producing Locate S,1’s new album, resulting in a sister record to UR FUN. Identity. The classic ideal of identity is a detriment. The Stoics should have been more clear -- yes, "Know Thyself"; however, know that you are the sum total of multiple compounds, not merely a carrier identity. Kevin Barnes knows this. Kevin Barnes has a cold. He looks tired, taking swigs of coconut milk from one of those oddly-shaped cartons, but his face is sparkling in the mid-day sun. It’s the first truly nice day in New York City in several months, and we’re jammed into a corner on the southside of a packed Union Square Park. Barnes asked if we could find a sunny spot to speak, so we walked the five blocks up from Webster Hall and now he’s sparkling in the sunlight with the residual glittering of last night’s show, like those teenage vampires of lore. It’s bright and it’s crowd and noisy as the city takes momentary respite from the longest, coldest winter any of us can remember. It’s hardly the ideal spot for frank and intimate conversation about the creation of art in the wake of lost love, but it somehow works, as Barnes and I discuss the Elephant 6 alum’s 13th record, Aureate Gloom and the painful separation from his wife that followed shortly after the release of his last album. It’s an honest and fascinating conversation with an artist’s whose musical themes are sometimes seemingly impossible to penetrate.
