ABOUT PIGEON CLUB:Pigeon Club is the music of Wayne Whittaker, a multi-instrumentalist musician/ songwriter living in Los Angeles. Outside of his own project, Whittaker has worked with artists such as Dawes, Diane Coffee, Haerts, and countless others.Pigeon Club's upcoming second album, Another Year In The Minors, is another collaboration with Grammy-winning co-producers John Would and Amy Wood (Fiona Apple, Warren Zevon). Together, along with a stellar group of friends/ backing musicians, they unwittingly managed to document a major transitional period in the life of the songwriter.Sonically, Pigeon Club has built its nest neatly between genres. There are the ubiquitous indie singer-songwriter overtones, jangly Beatle power-pop moments galore, and self-aware nods to “dad rock.”As a songwriter, Wayne explores themes of self-reflection, doubt, anxiety, and the minutiae of everyday life with an inviting mixture of emotional transparency and self-effacing humor.Pigeon Club's latest single, ‘Liar,' is a lush indie rock vehicle that examines the aftermath of a defense mechanism malfunction, with both humor and heart.“This was a really hard song to write,” Whittaker recalls, “structurally, it came together very quickly. But once I read it back, it became clear that this was going to be a particularly exposing three minutes. Thankfully, the touched-upon themes are unmistakably human, so at the very least I've confirmed that I am indeed only human.”Survival skill for those unfitTo handle what we're dealing with Seek a softer landingThe damage notwithstandingLyrically, parts of the song read like a relational autopsy report. We've reached the point where you'll admit You don't know who you're living withYou could see right through me If I let you closer to meBut I'm a liarThe accompanying music video for ‘Liar' sees a traveling entertainer and his puppet sidekick struggle to engage with an audience using card tricks, sleight of hand, and some honest-to-goodness magic. It's clear that however successful the illusion is, this game of deception is taking its toll. But the show, of course, must go on.CONNECT WITH PIGEON CLUB:InstagramSUPPORT THIS SHOWSUBSCRIBE TO YOUR LIFE THE MIXTAPE MAGAZINE

This week Joe talks with Shaun Fleming-aka Diane Coffee. Shaun is a singer, song writer and multi-instrumentalist based in Southern California. His 4th record, With People (out now on Polyvinyl Records) is a personal reach into the past and a closer, sometimes darker look at the people and experiences that have made him who he is now. In this episode, Shaun shares what motivated him to look back, why he sometimes masks painful memories with uplifting melody, and why this record felt more therapeutic than his previous efforts. Joe and Shaun discuss the process of making With People with his former bandmate Jonathan Rado (Foxygen) and long time collaborator Joe Lefitz and how the power of their shorthand was a key ingredient in the production. We also learn that there just might be a vaccine for Demoitis and we hear a couple tunes. http://www.dianecoffee.com/https://www.polyvinylrecords.com/artist/diane_coffeeTour Stories is sponsored by Izotope. There are birds chirping. Shaun Fleming is making the most out of this beautiful spring day in Los Angeles, taking the call from the front porch. We get into a little lore about some parrots that have colonized Pasadena. Things get personal quickly, as they tend to with these conversations. And while he's quick to note that his latest record, With People, arrives under the Diane Coffee monitor, it's still a personal one. The name, after all, has been a fluid one. It's sometimes a band, sometimes a person. Sometimes him, sometimes not. Male, female. Often in-between. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Shaun Fleming. Originally from Agoura Hills, CA, Shaun started out their creative life as a child voice actor on shows like Fillmore!, Kim Possible and Lilo & Stitch. As a musician though, they first started playing professionally as the touring drummer for the indie rock band Foxygen. Soon after, Shaun formed Diane Coffee as an outlet for their own music, and since then have recorded five albums and EPs, the latest of which, With People, was just released on Polyvinyl! Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez, whose jurisdiction includes Uvalde, has accused Governor Abbott of attempting to "bamboozle" grieving locals with empty promises of legislative action. Five people remained hospitalized with injuries suffered in the shooting as of Wednesday, including a 10 year old girl who remains in serious condition. The Girl Scouts have posthumously honored shooting victim Amerie Jo Garza with its Bronze Cross, which is granted to members who display life-threatening heroism. The Austin Police Department is pushing for the reinstatement of automated license plate readers, or ALPR's - a tool that was suspended alongside budgetary modifications following the George Floyd protests in 2020. Meanwhile, five APD officers facing indictments over their use of force during those protests are suing the city, saying the “less than lethal” rounds employed during the demonstrations were defective, and that they were insufficiently trained in their use. TXDOT has begun an extensive project to remove those pesky stoplights from part of Loop 360. The criminal justice org Mano Amiga reports it has reached the necessary number of petition signatures to force a local vote on marijuana decriminalization in San Marcos. Texas French Bread announces its return, at first with sales via local farmers markets. The future of the historic building on 29th Street, largely destroyed by fire, remains uncertain. Texas Longhorns Men's Golf has won a national championship - its first NCAA title since 2012. At its best, music offers us a chance at time travel, transporting us back to moments in our past. That happens over and over again on With People, the latest album from Shaun Fleming's Diane Coffee project. Produced by Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, it blends '70s style folk-rock with orchestral pop flourishes and focuses in on their youth in Agoura Hills, California. Fleming joins Clairaudience host Ersa Lowly tonight to discuss the album, the nostalgic power of Pink Floyd, and of course, discuss a visit with Harry Nilsson. With People is released April 29 and is available now for preorder from Polyvinyl Records.
