It’s OMN Coffeeshop Conversation #172 right here at World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan. In with me today is one of the busiest guitarists in town, Mark Bowden. He’ll play at the 7th annual Next Waltz show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday November 23-25 at The Alberta Rose Theater. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation and patrons are encouraged to bring two non-perishable food items for Oregon Food Bank. He’ll also be playing at the 2018 Stumptown Soul Holiday Spectacular at the Wonder Ballroom on Saturday, December 15 to benefit Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Now that you know that, meet Mark Bowden.
This episode has 3 parts. The first conversation is with Jojo and Taber. They set up to check-in with each-other before the show in Portland and Jojo just woke up from a nap and was getting feisty. Part 2 is an introduction to John Swint our stage hand/guitar tech. Taber and he sat down to profess their love for one another and to discuss tour but mainly to share their love. The final conversation took place in the parking lot after the show between Taber and Carmen Winters. Carmen is the wife of of Montreal's sound man Mike Nolte. Taber sought to get to know her better and to discuss the struggles of being in a relationship with someone who tours for a living and how touring can effect a relationship.
February 2, 2016 We’ve got a percussionist and a poet in the coffeeshop this week…all in the person of Heidi Shuler. The coffeeshop is World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan in Portland...and we'rewell into our second year of Coffeeshop Conversations. I met Heidi at the very first Mysti Krewe of Nimbus’ Mardi Gras Ball. She was the percussionist in Steve Kerin’s band. The 2016 Ball at the Wonder Ballroom on Saturday, February 6 is the 6th annual. OMN is a media sponsor again this year. She was a founding member of the Krewe. She’s more than an multi-percussionist. She’s also a poet and I’m going to ask her to read a couple for us.
Back to the basics this week. The holiday season is in full swing and the gang is back to its old shenanigans. We went and had burgers at Frack Burger, you'll want to listen in to our reviews of those (here's a hint: they were good). We also revisited one of our favorite shops in town, Other World Games & Comics, first some good old fashioned holiday style shopping. On this episode we're talking major Rogue One as we're less than 2 weeks away from the movie's release. We're also talking a little about the upcoming Episode VIII and the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. We're also talking Independence Day Resurgence, The Mummy reboot, Supergirl & the CW/DC crossover event, The Walking Dead, Riverdale, NES Classic/Pi Cart/RetroUSB AVS, Final Fantasy XV, The Last Guardian, No Man's Sky, Aesop Rock, Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover aka LANDO) and his new album "Awaken, My Love", the Greater Seattle Area Vintage Toy Show, VR headsets, and all sorts of other action. Also, listen in for a chance to win a guest list spot accompanying Chase to the Aesop Rock show Dec. 20th at Wonder Ballroom. Listen close for the details on how to get in on that. Vibrant Masterpieces From The Bodies Of Exotic Animals The model-turned-Salem artist Christopher Marley transforms dead things into art. We’re not talking butterfly boxes or taxidermy here. Marley preserves exotic birds, insects, snakes, and even octopi using state-of-the-art techniques and then composes them in frames. They’re so exquisite, they’ve ended up on the walls of museums, high-end galleries, fancy furniture stores. And Beyonce herself has one! Marley's new book, "Biophilia," is available in stores. The Santa Photos Nobody WantedEvery year this time, families bundle up their children and take them to meet Santa and have a picture taken. The shoots are always memorable, for better or worse - either they’re adorable, or the child is crying, or the person sitting in poor Santa’s lap is no child. Now, a batch of vintage Santa photos too awkward to be taken home is the focus of installation at Newspace Center for Photography. Don't miss this slide show of the photos.Outgoing PNCA President Reflects on His Legacy Pacific Northwest College of Art's longtime president, Tom Manley, has taken a job leading Ohio's Antioch College. In his 12 years at Oregon’s top school for fine arts, Manley oversaw tremendous growth, including six new MFA programs and the expansion of PNCA’s footprint. Here, Manley opens up about what drove his decision-making.Portlanders Go GrammyingPortland rocked the 2016 Grammy nominations. Hometown heroes include the Oregon Symphony, Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers, The Decemberists, and remix artist R.A.C. And the toast of the kindie set, Lori Henriques, is nominated for Best Children’s Album for her snappy, Frischberg-esque release, “How Great Can This Day Be.” We invited her into the studio as soon as we heard. Family, Unexpectedly Dissected Three women, three new novels: Kathleen Alcott’s “Infinite Home” concerns the tenants of a Brooklyn brownstone, Mary Gaitskill’s “The Mare” is about a Dominican girl who learns to ride, Claire Vaye Watkins’ “Gold Fame Citrus” is set in a drought-scarred California of the near future. Think Out Loud’s Allison Frost brought the authors together at Wordstock for a panel called “Unexpected Family,” and the result was unexpectedly intense. Heartless, But SoulfulWhile the Austin band Heartless Bastards was in town for a sold out Wonder Ballroom show recently, they stopped by opbmusic to play acoustic versions of songs from their newest release, “Restless Ones.” Two of the Bastards - lead vocal and guitarist Erika Wennerstrom and bassist Jesse Ebaugh - took a trip down memory lane with opbmusic’s Matt Drenik. A Tribute to the Godfather of Astoria ArtRoyal Nebeker spent 40 years living and teaching on the Oregon Coast, and he left an indelible imprint on the Northwest art world. In his honor, Clatsop Community College faculty have mounted a tribute art show at the newly renamed Royal Nebeker Art Gallery. Hear Nebeker's family and colleagues talk about why he was so important to the region’s creative scene.
And then everything takes a turn... With Jenny out of town this weekend having some family fun, the two of us pre-recorded two segments to create one bad ass show. The first half was recorded at Mt. Tabor Brewing with owner/brewmaster Eric Surface, right in the brewery. With that comes an array of background noises and a lot of echo, so stick with us as there's some interesting interesting information about the craft brewing world. The second half of our show introduces new friend of the show David Daniel of CNN. The three of us talk Hollywood and some Oscar predictions. Sure, there was a poo cruise ship, meteors attacking Russia, and an Asteroid that almost took out Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck, but we just couldn't get to it. Also, be sure to get your tickets to Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside next weekend at the Wonder Ballroom. We'll be there Saturday. Come and say hi. A big thank to Mainbrew for their ongoing support, and to you for your ongoing ears. jenny@inonedayradio.com sean@inonedayradio.com Talk to us at (971) 238-IN1D Like us at www.facebook.com/inonedayradio Tweet us at @inonedayradio Subscribe to us on iTunes Go support our friends at www.mainbrew.com You can follow David Daniel on Twitter @CNNLADavid You can check out Mt.
