Oracle and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) have announced the launch of Oracle Database@AWS, a new offering that allows customers to access Oracle Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure and Oracle Exadata Database Service within AWS. Oracle Database@AWS will provide customers with a unified experience between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and AWS, offering simplified database administration, billing, and unified customer support. In addition, customers will have the ability to seamlessly connect enterprise data in their Oracle Database to applications running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), AWS Analytics services, or AWS's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) services, including Amazon Bedrock. With direct access to Oracle Exadata Database Service on AWS, including Oracle Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure and workloads running on Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Database@AWS allows customers to bring together all of their enterprise data to drive breakthrough innovation. The new offering provides a low latency network connection between Oracle databases and applications on AWS. This allows customers to benefit from Oracle Autonomous Database, a fully automated and managed Oracle Database service, and the performance, availability, security, and cost-effectiveness of Oracle Exadata Database Service, while enjoying the security, agility, flexibility, and sustainability benefits provided by AWS. "We are seeing huge demand from customers that want to use multiple clouds," said Larry Ellison, Oracle Chairman and CTO. "To meet this demand and give customers the choice and flexibility they want, Amazon and Oracle are seamlessly connecting AWS services with the very latest Oracle Database technology, including the Oracle Autonomous Database. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure deployed inside of AWS datacenters, we can provide customers with the best possible database and network performance." "As far back as 2008, customers could run their Oracle workloads in the cloud, and since then, many of the world's largest and most security sensitive organisations have chosen to deploy their Oracle software on AWS," said Matt Garman, CEO at AWS. "This new, deeper partnership will provide Oracle Database services within AWS to allow customers to take advantage of the flexibility, reliability, and scalability of the world's most widely adopted cloud alongside enterprise software they rely on." Oracle Database@AWS will help customers continue to accelerate their migration to the cloud and modernise their IT environments. Customers can also benefit from: Zero-ETL integration between Oracle Database services and AWS Analytics services. Customers will be able to seamlessly and securely connect and analyse data across Oracle Database services and applications they already have running on AWS to get faster, deeper insights without having to build pipelines. Flexible options to simplify and accelerate migrating their Oracle databases to the cloud, including compatibility with proven migration tools such as Oracle Zero Downtime Migration. A simplified procurement experience via AWS Marketplace that enables customers to purchase Oracle Database services using their existing AWS commitments and use their existing Oracle license benefits, including Bring Your Own License (BYOL) and discount programs such as Oracle Support Rewards (OSR). A fully unified support experience from both AWS and Oracle as well as guidance through reference architectures, landing zones, and other collateral for customers to successfully build and run their most trusted enterprise applications in the cloud. Seamless integration with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for an easy and secure way to perform database backups and restoration, and to aid with disaster recovery. In this Episode of AWS TechChat, Shane and Pete embark on a different style of the show and share with you a lot of updates - over 30 updates and we tackle it like speed dating. We start the show with some updates, there are now an additional 2 AWS regions, Milan in Italy and Cape Town in South Africa. This brings the region count to 24 Regions and 76 Availability Zones. Amazon Guard Duty has a price reduction for the customers who are consuming it on the upper end of the scale, VPC flow log scanning is now 40% cheaper when your logs are more than 10,000GB. Lots of Database engine updates: • Database engine version updates across almost all engines. Microsoft SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Studio) is now available on Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for SQL Server now. • If you are currently running SSAS on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), you can now save costs by running SSAS directly on the same Amazon RDS DB instance as your SQL Server database. SSAS is currently available on Amazon RDS for SQL Server 2016 and SQL Server 2017 in the single-AZ configuration on both the Standard and Enterprise edition. • NoSQL Workbench for Amazon DynamoDB is now is now generally available. NoSQL Workbench is a client-side application, available for Windows and macOS that helps developers build scalable, high-performance data models, and simplifies query development and testing. • Apache Kafka is an option for AWS Database Migration Service and Amazon Managed Apache Cassandra Service is now available in public preview. Microsoft SQL Server on RDS now supports Read Replicas. Storage updates: • More nitro based Amazon EC2 systems receive IO performance updates. • Amazon FSx for Windows File Server is now has a Magnetic HDD option which brings storage down to 1.3cents per GB. • Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) announces 400% increase in read operations for General Purpose mode file systems. On Development front: • AWS Lambda@Edge now supports Node 12.x and Python 3.8. • Amplify CLI add support for additional AWS Lambda runtimes (Java, Go, .NET and Python) and Lambda cron jobs. • AWS Lambda now supports .NET Core 3.1. • Receive notifications for AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodeCommit, AWS CodeDeploy, and AWS CodePipeline in Slack, no need to use Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) and AWS Glue. • Amazon MSK adds support for Apache Kafka version 2.4.1 • Updates to AWS Deep Learning Containers for PyTorch 1.4.0 and MXNet 1.6.0 Containers updates: • AWS Fargate launches platform version 1.4 which brings a raft of improvements. • Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) updates service level agreement to 99.95%. • Amazon EKS now supports service-linked roles. • Amazon EKS adds envelope encryption for secrets with AWS Key Management Service (KMS). • Amazon EKS now supports Kubernetes version 1.15 • Amazon ECS supports in preview updating placement strategy and constraints for existing Amazon ECS Services without recreating the service. As Intuit moves to a cloud hosting architecture that includes Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), containers, and serverless applications, the company is on an "observability" journey to transform the way it monitors its applications' health. Observability requires correlating logs, metrics, traces, etc., which becomes complex as systems become more distributed. In this session, the company discusses leveraging tools such as OpenTelemetry, Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES), Amazon Kinesis, and Jaeger to build an observability solution, and the benefits this solution provides by giving visibility across the platform, from containers to serverless applications.
