Anne is an adoptee from Nebraska. She is currently at work writing a fiction-ish novel that treats adoptees from an adoption-informed perspective. She is also participating in an anthology related to her membership in the group Flourish, headed by Pam Cordano and Anne Heffron. Mentioned in the show: Adoptee Chameleon: adoptees are sometimes described as chameleons, given we often learn to conceal ourselves in order to fit into our environment Kansas laws regarding adoptee access to documents: www.dcf.ks.gov/services/PPS/pages/adoption-records-and-search. Kansas allows adoptees unrestricted access to their own original birth documents. Nebraska laws regarding adoptee access to documents: dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/Vital-Records-Service-Options.aspx. Nebraska does not allow adoptees unrestricted access to original birth documents. They have a complex, confusing set of regulations governing release. The District of Columbia; laws regarding adoptee access to documents: The District of Columbia does not allow unrestricted access to adoptions that took place after 1 September, 1937. Zombie Veto: a veto that maintains restricted access to identifying information even after the death of the parent who has signed a non-consent or redaction veto. * Adoptee Rights Law Center: an excellent resource regarding the status of state laws regarding adoptee access to original birth certificates, established and maintained by lawyer and adoptee Gregory Luce. 23 and Me: a commercial DNA testing company that provides information on health, ethnicity and genetic matches. Salvation Army Booth Memorial Hospital: maternityrecordswest.salvationarmy.org maintains records from the maternity hospitals once run by the Salvation Hospital. Adoptees born in these hospitals can request and receive redacted non-identifying information about themselves so long as the records still exist. Lutheran Family Services: www.lfsneb.org Paul Sunderland: Adoption and Addiction Full Lecture, youtube.com United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Adoptees Connect: adopteesconnect.com *Since the recording of this episode, I re-read the laws that allow adoptive parents in Nebraska to deny access to identifying information to adoptees. I had originally misunderstood the law to be a Zombie Veto. While Nebraska adoptive parents may block adoptees from receiving identifying information during their lifetimes, the veto expires after the adoptive parent who filed the veto dies. The adoptee must be able to demonstrate to the state that the adoptive parent in question is deceased. The state promises to make a "reasonable effort to determine if the person is deceased", adoptees have reported that the states efforts are not very vigorous and have missed deaths that occurred in other states.

This podcast features Anne Heffron who is a screenwriter, book author, and an incredible writing coach.  She compares writing to poop.  She surmises, “What if we realized writing is as basic a function as pooping … it is within us and wants to get out!  We also don't sit around and evaluate poop either. Think about that.”  What a world it would be if we all felt free enough to write from an authentic and true place within.  Anne relates her coaching to a “stick of dynamite” when it comes to helping her clients move past rules and the learned structure of writing, and our inherent editing mind, and teaches people how to find their authentic voice and the question their life is here to answer. Anne Heffron: Anne Heffron has taught writing for most of her adult life. She has been eating ice cream for even longer. She is currently writer-in-residence, farmer-in-training at Spirit Hill Farm in Sebastopol and holds online classes for adopted people with Pam Cordano. As a writing coach, she teaches both groups of people and individuals how to express their most authentic selves on paper. She got a dog not long ago and is deeply, wildly, in love. My very dear friend Anne Heffron coached me in writing my memoir. No way it gets done without her. It took more than two years - almost three. During that time we got to know each other way, way, WAY too well. No, we weren’t lovers. That’s actually kinda funny to think about. We’re both adoptees. And Anne led me in a class with her friend Pam Cordano (who needs to be on this podcast). Anne and I have both gone through a lot of fits and rages and tantrums. We’re much better now, thank you very much. See what you think!

It was hard. 30 years of hard work. Massive credit card debt. Yet, the book was still not finished. She said, “My mom died before she could finish her book. I am not going to die before I finish mine.” However, things continued to get worse before they got any better. She was fired from her job for throwing a pen at a student and saying, “Fuck” in front of the whole class. Her marriage was falling apart. A hard moment of reflection was bound to follow. She gave up her apartment. Packed up everything and left. Next stop, Martha's Vineyard, NY. Two weeks, 336 hours, to complete her work. But, the story was not coming out. She said, “I was heartbroken. My one hope was that I could write a book.” Fear took over. She texted her best friend and explained all of the reasons why she couldn't do it. She felt devastated. But, right before she was about to pack her things and leave, she received a message. Her friend wrote back, “Use your true voice.” It all clicked. She stopped trying to be the person her parents wanted her to be. Enough was enough. All of a sudden, she understood how to tell her story. 93 days later, “You Don't Look Adopted” was finished. Anne co-wrote the screenplay for "Phantom Halo" with Antonia Bogdanovich (daughter of director Peter Bogdanovich), and it's based on a short film written & directed by Antonia, "My Left Hand Man." Anne talks about casting actors for the film, her collaborative experience with Antonia, and why her next project may be writing a book about her experience growing up as an adoptee. "Phantom Halo" is currently in production. For today's Poem of the Week, Marcia keeps it Hollywood by reading "Brad Pitt" by Aaron Smith. And for today's Poetic License, Benjamin Alire Saenz reads part 2 of his reflections on Words, Language, and Memory. Ben reflects on why we need words as tools of remembrance, and why the process of naming things is so important to poets.
