Joining us this week is returning guest from March, 2022 (episode 68) Linda Pevac where we learned about her adoption journey and discussed her first book, “The Gathering Place.” Linda has since released her second book, “A Fire is Coming,” available both on Amazon.com and audible. Linda, “Emma Stevens,” is a US domestic adoptee who was adopted at birth and has survived many layers of trauma. Her childhood upbringing in an authoritative, cult-like family, predisposed Linda to several more struggles. One of them was falling prey to an exploitative therapist where she unknowingly entered a cultic, one-on-one relationship with her psychologist. Someone who was to help, support and provide healing - instead, held her captive in a psychological nightmare. Emma Stevens is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. She developed the inner strength and courage to surmount the many struggles she faced. Her traumas were born from first being relinquished and then becoming an adoptee who struggled with being forced to wear an impossible mask of playing the part of the “good adopted child.” Her childhood upbringing of an authoritative, cult-like family, predisposed Emma to several more struggles. One of them was falling prey to an exploitative therapist where she unknowingly entered a cultic, one-on-one relationship with her psychologist. Someone who was to help, support, and provide healing – instead, held Emma captive in a psychological nightmare. Because of these past traumas, it's Emma's desire to be part of the movement that is dedicated to help bring forth change to the way our world views the needs and support of adopted individuals, as well as bring awareness of the exploitation that can occur by the hands of counselors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals. By sharing her experience of being exploited by her abusive psychologist/social worker, Emma feels strongly to expose and bring light to what an unethical, boundaryless, professional therapy situation may look like. In this episode, I interview two adoptees who are connected and who have larger-than-life adoption stories. Meet Kelli and Linda. Kelli was the product of a pre-arranged adoption through a local church and her biological mother's doctor. Her adoptive parents waited for notification of her birth and brought her home at 3 days old. She had a happy life, and she says her adoptive mom was the absolute best woman ever. Unfortunately, since her adoptive mother's death, she no longer has a relationship with her adoptive father and at this time does not have any communication with him. She says she does have an amazing relationship with her biological father and his side of the family, not so much with her biological mother who after a rocky reunion, she has no contact with now, as many adoptees can relate. Kelli has a celebrity adoptee for a cousin that joins us later in the episode. Everyone in the adoptee community knows her as Emma Stevens. Emma discusses why she decided to recently reveal her real name, Linda Pevac, and why she used a pseudonym in the first place. This week on the pod, we explore one-on-one cult dynamics with memoirist, Emma Stevens. Emma's story begins with a peek inside of her first book - The Gathering Place: An Adoptee Story. She shares why she felt compelled to share her story of relinquishment and how the industry of adoption is problematic and ‘a little culty' in sense that it doesn't always serve the best interests of the children it serves. Emma describes being adopted into an authoritarian family and how having so little room for individuation has made her more susceptible to cultic influence as an adult. The conversation then turns to her second memoir, A Fire Is Coming, where she shares what it was like to fall victim to a narcissistic therapist who coerced Emma to leave her marriage and move in with her. She describes how this individual fostered a slow-burn dependency that preyed on Emma's core wounds and fostered a disorganized attachment bond. Thanks to support from the outside, Emma was able to eventually move away from this relationship and take legal action against her abuser; but it would take her years to come to terms with her experience. Sobriety, in every sense of the word, paved way for deep healing, and now Emma is bravely sharing her story with the world in hopes of bringing awareness to the cult-of-one dynamics that are so common in abusive one-on-one relationships.Emma Stevens is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. It is Emma's desire to be part of the movement that is dedicated to help bring forth change to the way our world views the needs and support of adopted individuals, as well as bring awareness of the exploitation that can occur by the hands of counselors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals. Working with a therapist involves making ourselves vulnerable. Putting ourselves in their hands. Accepting their authority. Emma's therapist abused her trust. Time and time again Emma ignored red flags as her intuition warned her off her therapist. Listen in as we explore this and how you can become aware of the red flags you've seen. Other people can't know us like we can know ourselves. There are no gurus. So we have to become our own. Take what works from others and leave what doesn't. Our guest Emma Stevens is an mother, trainer and the author of "The Gathering Place: An adoptee's Story" and newly released, "A Fire is Coming." We unpack the uses of the healing modality, EMDR Therapy (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and she touches on her tumultuous childhood with her adoptive parents, the gift of learning how to take up space, Benefits of tapping as another tool of healing, how she chose life after years of alcoholism, and how deconstructing belief systems led to writing her book, and thereby teaching her how to help others get unstuck. And finally she breaks down how to self-publish a book, step by step. Emma Stevens is back with us to talk about her second memoir “ A Fire Is Coming.” She is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. Her traumas were born from first being relinquished, and then becoming an adoptee to abusive parents. Her developmental trauma increased her vulnerability to fall prey to an exploitative therapist. She has great courage to share and hopes to inform & educate others. You can get her book here. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BT76LPGF?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_P4BKM5GPGVN57PJ9QY77 https://linktr.ee/EmmaStevensWriter
Emma Stevens is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. She developed the inner strength and courage to surmount the many struggles she faced. Her traumas were born from first being relinquished, and then becoming an adoptee who struggled with being forced to wear an impossible mask of playing the part of the “good adopted child.” Her childhood upbringing of an authoritative, cult-like family, predisposed Emma to several more struggles. One of them was falling prey to an exploitative therapist where she unknowingly entered a cultic, one-on-one relationship with her psychologist. Someone who was supposed to help, support, and provide healing – instead, held Emma captive in a psychological nightmare. Because of these past traumas, it's Emma's desire to be part of the movement that is dedicated to help bring forth change to the way our world views the needs and support of adopted individuals, as well as bring awareness of the exploitation that can occur by the hands of counselors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals. By sharing her experience of being exploited by her abusive psychologist/social worker, Emma feels strongly to expose and bring light to what an unethical, boundary-less, UNprofessional therapy situation may look like. This memoir is Emma Stevens' second book. Her first was The Gathering Place: An Adoptee's Story. She has an undergraduate degree in journalism and has completed Master's level course work in psychology, specializing in Marriage, Family, and Child counseling. She has two adult children and two cat children who she adores. ***MAY CONTAIN TRIGGERING CONTENT AND EXPLICIT TOPICS ***Please seek professional help if you find yourself struggling with some of the realizations that you may experience during this episode. ***If you or someone you know would like to tell their adoption story on the podcast (anyone in the adoptee constellation), or if you are searching for a lost loved one, either separated by adoption or the foster care system, I would love to help you with your search by getting the word out and having you tell your story on the podcast. Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees
Adoptee Emma shares what she's learned about how we break from addiction whether that's our thinking or other addictions like alcohol. It's a particularly profound episode. I hope you find it as powerfully enlightening and empowering as I did.Emma Stevens is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. She developed the inner strength and courage to surmount the many struggles she faced. Her traumas were born from being an adoptee who struggled with being forced to wear an impossible mask of playing the part of the “good adopted child.” Because being relinquished and adopted has colored her life, it's Emma's desire to be part of the movement that is dedicated to helping bring forth change to the way our world views the needs and support of adopted individuals. She believes strongly in adoptees finding their voice and discovering their truth to have a solid sense of self and to reclaim their identities. Through telling her story, Emma is dedicated to help redefine the narrative of adoption to include the entire complex truth.https://mobile.twitter.com/emmastevenstgphttps://www.facebook.com/Emmastevens99https://www.instagram.com/emmastevensthegatheringplaceWhen Emma learns her birth mother wrote and signed a letter about her to the adoption agency, she knew she had to have that letter if she were to ever discover her birth mother's true identity. Her birth mother had used a fictitious name at the maternity home and used an assumed name on Emma's original birth certificate. Emma takes bold measures to get ahold of that letter and start solving the puzzle that is her life.Emma was adopted into a family that expected her to conform to their expectations of who she should be — but she did not arrive as a blank slate. Unable to see that her relinquishment and adoption were not her fault, her soul split into pieces. In order to put the pieces back together, Emma embarks on multiple journeys and adventures towards both solving the mystery of who she is, and healing from the pain of separation from her origins.Emma powerfully describes a childhood and life profoundly affected by not knowing her true self. Has she ever known her true self? It's a story of inner strength and perseverance where Emma welcomes all her parts of self to feel valued and seen. She fights to reunite her fractured soul through love and acceptance of herself, and of others. In a meditative and surreal state, under and around a big old oak tree with a simple wood-seated and rope swing attached, she accepts the invitation of integrating herself. And this reunion all takes place at The Gathering Place.https://www.amazon.com/Gathering-Place-Adoptees-Story/dp/B09HH8PDGLhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Gathering-Place-Adoptees-Story/dp/B09N54ZRRT

Wandering Tree welcomes Author Emma Stevens, The Gathering Place, to the show. In today's conversation with host Adoptee Lisa Ann, our guest touches on her multi-decade journey of search and reunion; even teasing a bit on the adventures and detective skills needed to find ourselves. Having read/listened to this book myself, I can share that it is a must for adoptees! Emma's writing style and narration pull you in from the very beginning and keeps you till the last word. We loved having her as part of the show and look forward to her return and updates in the future. From Emma Stevens:Do you have a story to tell? I know you do. We all do. When I told mine in “The Gathering Place,” I was aware that it wasn't going to be readily accepted by all. What is? The vulnerability it takes to tell your story is no joke. Here's to us standing strong together. The Gathering Place: An Adoptee's Story found on: Amazon.comLearn more: https://www.amazon.com/.../ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp...#emmastevensthegatheringplaceFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Emmastevens99IG: https://www.instagram.com/emmastevensthegatheringplace
Emma Stevens is a U.S. domestic adoptee from birth and has survived layers of trauma that have put her on multiple journeys. She developed the inner strength and courage to surmount the many struggles she faced. Through telling her story, Emma is dedicated to help redefine the narrative of adoption to include the entire complex truth. This memoir is Emma Stevens' first book. It's been a long season working hard, and your dog deserves a break. But how do you tell them that the shooting season is over now? This podcast episode hosted by LWDG Founder Joanne Perrott is all about transitioning your dog from a busy work schedule to a more relaxed lifestyle during the training season. Emma Stevens and Abbie Reid, Experts from the LWDG Group, shared their tips for making this transition successfully. They recommend using the offseason to work on obedience training, fixing any problems that arose during the last season, and gradually introducing your dog to the things they'll be doing during the upcoming season. By taking things slowly and consolidating old skills before moving on to new ones, you'll help your dog be successful in the next season. Ask anyone in Louisville the best place to see Halloween decorations, and you’ll likely be sent to Hillcrest Avenue in Crescent Hill. It’s just one of those things everyone seems to know. But how did it get started? And what’s it like being a homeowner there? That’s what Curious Louisville listener Katharine Crawford wanted to know. Some sources have the tradition going back to the 1980s — originally a competition between two neighbors trying to outdo each other. But historian Joanne Weeter said Halloween on Hillcrest really started picking up steam in the 90s. “1995 was the first year that Hillcrest was formally mentioned in the local paper that it was a Halloween thing,” Weeter said. Word got out, and crowds started showing up throughout the month of October. These days, they number in the tens of thousands. Up and down the street, stretching from Frankfort Avenue to Brownsboro Road, houses are decked out by proud homeowners who spend months preparing. “It takes a commitment to pull off such a wonderful display that really borders on set design,” Weeter said. “These homeowners are putting in a lot of time and effort to put up such elaborate concoctions for Halloween.” Who are these frightfully festive people? We met Susan Longerbean on a stroll down Hillcrest the week before Halloween. Longerbean bought a house on the street to be close to her son’s school. “And the tradition here is that the owners will leave the Halloween decorations behind,” she said. So her family inherited Halloween decorations, including a pair of giant eyeballs, and several rows of sharp teeth. “I didn’t know what this house was,” Longerbean said. “And then a neighbor said, ‘oh, that’s the monster house!'” She googled the words monster house, Hillcrest, Louisville, “and it popped up immediately!” Emma Stevens Susan Longerbean’s “monster house.” She followed the design in the picture, and now Longerbean and her family fit right into their bloodcurdling block. If you go to Hillcrest tonight to check out the devious decor and maybe score some candy, be prepared for a crowd; the neighborhood website says between 2,500 and 3,000 kids trick-or-treat there every year. Once you wake up from your Kit-Kat coma, submit your own question at curiouslouisville.org. Hi Podcast listeners! Thanks for downloading. Be sure to get a copy of the Break the Business audiobook, now available on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes! In the first segment, Ryan and Dave continue the show's discussion from last week about the proposed Transparency in Music Licensing law currently in Congress. The law would have significant implications for indie musicians. Ryan and Dave discuss two important questions that are currently not clear: Who is going to pay for this database, and how will the government publicize this database to artists so that they don't lose their rights? In the second segment, folk pop singer songwriter Emma Stevens stops by for an interview. She talks about her latest album "To My Roots" and her successful crowdfunding campaign to help make it. Emma had a lot of great crowdfunding tips in this interview, including some terrific advice on creating effective rewards in your campaigns. You can find out more about Emma's terrific music by visiting www.emmastevensmusic.com. In the third segment, we have Dave's Movie Minute AND Dave's Metal Minute.
