The Substance is a 2024 body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. It follows a fading celebrity, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who, after being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) due to her age, uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) with unexpected side effects.Noted for its satirical elements and grotesque, hyperrealistic imagery, The Substance is Fargeat's second feature film, after Revenge. Motivated by societal pressures on women's bodies and aging, she wrote the screenplay over two years, assembling a team to co-produce the film between France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Principal photography in France lasted 108 days. It made extensive use of prosthetic makeup designed by Pierre-Olivier Persin and primarily practical effects; these included suits, puppetry, dummies, insert shots, and approximately 21,000 liters (5,500 US gallons) of fake blood to portray Elisabeth's drug-induced transformation. The film score was written by Raffertie and features a cover of "Pump It Up!" by DJ Endor. The Substance premiered on May 19, 2024 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival main competition, where Fargeat won Best Screenplay. It was released theatrically in the United Kingdom and the United States by Mubi on September 20, 2024, and in France by Metropolitan Filmexport on November 6, 2024. At the box office, the film grossed $77 million on a $17.5 million production budget and became Mubi's highest-grossing film. It was a critical success and received numerous accolades, including five nominations each at the 97th Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and the 82nd Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy). For her performance, Moore won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and earned Best Actress nominations at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. On her fiftieth birthday, Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-celebrated but now-faded Academy Award-winning Hollywood film star, is abruptly dismissed from her long-running aerobics TV show by the producer, Harvey, due to her age. A distraught Elisabeth crashes her car while distracted by a billboard of herself being taken down. At the hospital, a young nurse covertly gives her a flash drive advertising "The Substance", a black market drug that promises a "younger, more beautiful, more perfect" version of oneself.Plot[edit]

In this special episode of Your Creative Mind, we're launching a brand-new series featuring table reads of original plays! You'll hear a fresh script performed for the first time, experiencing the raw energy of actors bringing characters to life in real time. What do Edgar Wright, Glen Powell, Stephen King, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have in common? A remake, of course! And this one sounds pretty good. We also talk about Mila Jovovich's next zombie movie. It is not another Resident Evil movie, but is the end of a looooong running franchise.Strange Darling received rave reviews upon it's release. While it didn't make the same box office impression of some other indie horror films released this year, those who had a chance to see it were impressed.Naturally, we talk about the awesomeness of Kyle Gallner, but how did the rest of the cast do? Was the non linear style necessary? And how well did it convey its themes? The Substance has been wowing audiences since winning the Best Screenplay award at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. A gross body horror with an odd sense of humor, the film is big and bold. Whether it is disgusting scenes, flagrant nudity, or in your face messaging, the film is relentless. We talk about feminist messaging, when gratuitous nudity is actually necessary, and how to effectively cram a message down the audience's throat. Does this movie really check off all the boxes for Blake or was he just set up for a major disappointment? Is this truly Demi Moore's best performances? After its world premiere at Cannes, where it won the festival's Best Screenplay prize, many have been anxiously awaiting to experience what is considered a new body horror classic and one of 2024's very best films. The film is an onslaught of maximalist filmmaking with grotesque imagery, impactful sound, and dramatically effective performances mixed with a satirical tone that pokes at our preconceived notions of beauty, aging, and self-image. "A Few Good Men" is a gripping courtroom drama testament to the power of compelling storytelling, strong performances, and sharp dialogue. Directed by Rob Reiner and based on Aaron Sorkin's play, the film has become a classic in the genre. It delivers a powerful narrative that delves into themes of honour, duty, and the complexities of military life.OverviewThe film centres around the court-martial of two U.S. Marines, Lance Corporal Harold Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison) and Private First Class Louden Downey (James Marshall), who are accused of murdering fellow Marine William Santiago at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. The case seems straightforward, but as the defence team, led by the inexperienced Navy lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), digs deeper, it becomes clear that there is more to the story than meets the eye.Kaffee, known for his penchant for plea bargains and lack of trial experience, is initially reluctant to take the case seriously. However, with the support of Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), an idealistic and determined lawyer, and Lieutenant Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollak), Kaffee begins to uncover a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the Marine Corps. Their investigation leads them to the formidable Colonel Nathan R. Jessup (Jack Nicholson), whose belief in the importance of a strong military defence directly conflicts with the principles of justice and accountability.PerformancesThe cast of "A Few Good Men" is stellar, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their roles. Tom Cruise delivers one of his finest performances as Lieutenant Kaffee, transitioning from a cocky, indifferent lawyer to a passionate advocate for justice. Cruise's portrayal captures the character's growth and determination, making his journey believable and compelling.Demi Moore shines as Lieutenant Commander Galloway, a character-driven by a strong moral compass and unwavering dedication to her clients. Moore's performance adds a layer of intensity and integrity to the film, highlighting the challenges faced by women in the military. However, Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Colonel Jessup steals the show. Nicholson's commanding presence and delivery of the film's most famous line, "You can't handle the truth!" have become iconic. His performance perfectly captures the arrogance and conviction of a man who believes that his actions, no matter how morally questionable, are justified in the name of national security.Cinematography and DirectionRob Reiner's direction is precise and effective, allowing the tension to build steadily throughout the film. The courtroom scenes, in particular, are masterfully shot, with Reiner using close-ups and dynamic camera angles to emphasise the intensity of the legal battle. The film's pacing is impeccable, ensuring that the audience remains engaged from start to finish.Robert Richardson's cinematography complements Reiner's direction. Its focus on stark lighting and tight framing adds to the film's dramatic atmosphere. The use of shadows and light enhances the visual appeal and symbolises the moral ambiguities and hidden truths at the story's heart.Screenplay and DialogueAaron Sorkin's screenplay is the backbone of "A Few Good Men," showcasing his talent for crafting sharp, intelligent dialogue. The film is filled with memorable lines and exchanges that drive the plot forward and provide insight into the characters' motivations and beliefs. Sorkin's writing is thought-provoking and entertaining, perfectly balancing drama and wit.The courtroom confrontations are particularly well-written, with the back-and-forth between Kaffee and Jessup as the film's climax. These scenes are a masterclass in tension and conflict, with each line of dialogue carefully constructed to build toward the explosive conclusion.Themes and Cultural SignificanceAt its core, "A Few Good Men" is a film about the clash between duty and morality and the often blurred line between right and wrong. The story raises important questions about the nature of authority, the ethics of military command, and the cost of protecting a nation. It challenges the audience to consider the balance between security and accountability and the importance of standing up for truth and justice, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. The film's exploration of these themes remains relevant today, as issues of military conduct and governmental transparency continue to be hotly debated. A Few Good Men serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and courage, both in the legal system and in everyday life.Character DevelopmentOne of the strengths of "A Few Good Men" is its well-developed characters, each of whom can evolve throughout the film. Kaffee's transformation from a complacent lawyer to a passionate defender of justice is central to the narrative, and Cruise's performance effectively captures this growth.Galloway's character provides a strong counterpoint to Kaffee, embodying the ideals of dedication and perseverance. Her unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth catalyses Kaffee's own journey, and Moore's portrayal brings depth and complexity to the role.Colonel Jessup, while ostensibly the antagonist, is portrayed with enough nuance to make him a compelling and, at times, sympathetic character. Nicholson's performance ensures that Jessup is not merely a villain but a man whose rigid beliefs and sense of duty have led him down a morally questionable path.Historical Context and ImpactReleased in 1992, "A Few Good Men" came at a time when the United States grappled with military ethics and accountability issues, particularly in the wake of the Iran-Contra affair and the Gulf War. The film's focus on a military trial resonated with audiences and critics alike, sparking discussions about the responsibilities of those in power and the consequences of unchecked authority. The film's critical and commercial success helped to cement its status as a classic, earning multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson, and Best Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its powerful storytelling and the relevance of its themes."A Few Good Men" is a masterful legal drama that combines outstanding performances, sharp writing, and expert direction to create a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film. Its exploration of duty, morality, and justice remains as powerful today as it was upon its release, making it a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences. For the Born to Watch podcast, "A Few Good Men" represents a significant entry in the legal drama genre and a film that challenges viewers to consider the complexities of honour and duty in a world where the lines between right and wrong are often blurred. Whether you're revisiting it for the umpteenth time or watching it for the first, "A Few Good Men" is a cinematic experience that promises to leave a lasting impact.

"El Conde" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival (where it won the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay), where it received positive reviews for its satire of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a 250-year-old vampire seeking death. Three-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Edward Lachman was tasked with bringing Pablo Larraín's unique vision to the screen in stunningly gorgeous black and white. Lachman was kind enough to spend some time talking with us following his latest Oscar nomination about his experience working on the film's technology, shooting with Larraín for the first time, his thoughts on his awards recognition, and more.
