From Amy:I met Nicole Diaz in the life-coaching world around the time that I was first envisioning my online community for real-life writers. She demonstrated a brilliant understanding of the creative process, and I had this idea of hosting Idea Parties as the centerpiece of my work with writing groups, with Parker Palmer's work as my model. Nicole was a Parker Palmer fan too. So for a few years, we collaborated to host once-a-month calls on Saturday mornings where we let beautiful words draw us into our writing.Afterwards, people spoke their voices into the room, and nobody corrected or coached or edited each other. Instead, we let you be at the heart of your story and reflected your words back. And books began to be written and friendships began to be made.Together, Nicole and I developed a flexible and potent Idea Party format that works to this day, even after she has moved on.There were other experiments Nicole and I tried, among them this little series of three podcasts. It was going to be available in the community library only, as one of many exclusive features. Since then I've streamlined my online Writing Circle space to center on writing calls and there's no reason to house a three-part podcast series with a leader who's no longer there. On the other hand, Nicole and I agree that these three episodes would make a beautiful Winter Solstice gift to YOU, my podcast listeners, at a time when creativity could bring us all comfort if we could just calm down about the creative process itself. These are shorter than my other episodes, and I find talking with Nicole delightful. I hope you enjoy.Happy holiday season.Love, AmyPS–Nicole sends her love too.Nicole Diaz is a creativity coach and business strategist. Detroit-area author Lynne Golodner's newest novel, Cave of Secrets arrived this August. Lynne made multiple midlife pivots in her life, moving from journalism to a complete commitment to her own writing-focused businesses. She actively chose to chase the things she most wanted — and found them. While dedicated to her own craft – 10 books and counting — she lifts up other writers in other ways, including running her own coaching, publishing and marketing businesses. She speaks with great expertise on balancing life as a writer and entrepreneur, and the culture of women writers supporting each other.  Her other books include Women of Valor, two poetry collections, and six nonfiction books, including Hide and Seek: Jewish Women and Hair Covering and The Flavors of Faith: Holy Breads. She has written thousands of articles and is a marketing entrepreneur, writing coach and host of the Make Meaning Podcast. After working as a journalist in New York and Washington, D.C., Lynne returned to her native Detroit to pursue a freelance writing career and teach writing. In 2007, she created Your People, a marketing and public relations company with a focus on storytelling, relationships and higher purpose. Over the years, Your People has worked with the yoga industry, nonprofits and in K-12 and Higher Education, with a specialty in Waldorf/Steiner schools. Today, the company focuses solely on guiding authors in building brands and marketing their writing. Lynne's journalistic and creative nonfiction writing has appeared in Saveur, the Chicago Tribune, Better Homes and Gardens, Midwest Living, the Detroit Free Press, Porridge Magazine, the Jewish Literary Journal, The Good Life Review, Hadassah Magazine, The Forward, Valiant Scribe, Story Unlikely, bioStories, The Dillydoun Review, Adelaide Magazine, QuibbleLit and YourTango, among many more publications. Plus, one of Lynne's creative nonfiction essays was a finalist in the Annie Dillard Creative Nonfiction contest at Bellingham Review. As a Writing Coach and Literary Instructor, Lynne teaches writing around the world, leads writers' retreats and facilitates The Writers Community. She provides 1:1 Writing Coaching and Developmental Editing services as well. Lynne fuses her Marketing expertise with her Writing background in webinars and masterminds focused on arming writers with the tools to market their work and build consistent, compelling author brands. In 2023, Lynne founded Scotia Road Books, a hybrid publisher for women over 40 to bring strong stories and stronger voices to a market that often overlooks this powerful population. Lynne's novel, Woman of Valor, was the first publication produced by Scotia Road Books in September 2023. Lynne chose the name, Scotia Road Books, because of the symbolic path an author takes toward publication. Plus, Scotia – the ancient word for Scotland – represents independence, rebellion, culture and identity, knowing who you are and dedication to being your truest self. While she happens to live on Scotia Road, Lynne built the press in the image of this symbolism and layered meaning. Lynne graduated from the University of Michigan (BA, Communications/English) and Goddard College (MFA, Writing) and earned a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program through Wayne State University in 2018. She is the mother of four young adults and lives in Huntington Woods, Michigan. Lynne is at work on her next novel. Helen is neither a historian nor a writer or history herself, but she has been working as a writing coach for the past six years, often with historians and other academics. If you remember my conversation with Anna Zeide in episode 29 last year, Helen was the writing coach that Anna and her co-editors brought in to a workshop to help book contributors work on writing essays aimed at wider audiences. I'm delighted to have the chance to talk more with Helen about what exactly a writing coach does and the kinds of conversations she finds herself having with historians. In addition to her work as a coach and teacher, Helen is a writer with MFA degrees from Brooklyn College and the University of Iowa, and her essays and fiction have appeared in publications including The Kenyon Review, The Paris Review Daily, and Literary Hub. She is the author of a book of lyric fictions and also has a forthcoming book about writing, teaching, and publishing.

In this episode of the How to be an Author podcast, writing coach Karena Akhavein, PhD, will make you feel better about some of the perceived shortcomings you may have, and open your eyes when it comes to some of the skills you may not have thought of, that belong to not only the category of technical writing craft, but also mindset and business skills. It's not enough to write a kick-ass book- one must also develop resilience and productivity, and build an author platform that will help your book to reach its ideal readers. Don't get intimidated: the beautiful part about being a writer is that we are always learning and growing, so all of these skills can be learned. In this episode, you'll learn about which writing skills really matter, how to gain those skills as easily as possible, the hacks that will help you to improve your writing fast, and the ways to determine how much you have improved so you can celebrate your wins.
