How to get the practice into your molecules—not in some militaristic way, but in a way that feels easy and natural.Alexis Santos has been in the field of mindfulness and meditation since 2001. After graduating from Harvard University in 1995, he spent several years in medical school before leaving his chosen career as a doctor to seek out a different path. It was while traveling in India that he was introduced to insight meditation. Since that time, Alexis has practiced in many meditative styles and traditions, including with Sayadaw U Tejaniya, the Thai Forest tradition with Ajahn Sumedho, the Tibetan tradition with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and within the lay Western insight community where he continues to learn from the growing diversity of voices. Alexis's primary teacher has been Sayadaw U Tejaniya, from the Burmese Theravada tradition, and with whom he ordained as a Buddhist monk from 2003 - 2005. Sayadaw encouraged Alexis to teach in 2012. Alexis also completed the Spirit Rock/IMS four-year teacher training program with Jack Kornfield and others, including mentors Joseph Goldstein and Carol Wilson. Alexis teaches meditation at retreat centers around the world. He is featured on the Ten Percent Happier meditation app and is co-founder of Open Door Meditation Community in Portland, Maine where he is a guest teacher. Alexis's teaching style is natural and uncrafted. He brings a practical, intuitive and compassionate approach to the development of wisdom.***Want to study and practice with Alexis? In August of 1971, fifty years after the UK's Football Association banned women's soccer competitions, a group of women's soccer teams gathered in Mexico City for the first unofficial Women's World Cup. The documentary, "COPA 71," tells the story of this monumental - and largely forgotten - sporting event. Directors Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine, as well as Carol Wilson, team captain of the 1971 England team join us to discuss the film, which premieres tomorrow at IFC Center and on digital streaming platforms.

The shameful treatment of pioneer women footballers 50 years ago is the subject of a new documentary Copa 71, which is screening now. Rapturous crowds of over 100,000 fans cheered 18 year old Carol Wilson as she captained England at the 1971 women's football World Cup in Mexico. The experience was a stark contrast to the reception she and other women players received at home. The UK Football Association, which had banned women from playing for 50 years, refused to endorse the tournament and tried to shut it down. To this day the team Carol represented is not recognised by the FA as an official England team, which has earned them the moniker of 'The Lost Lionesses'.

How do we respond when we witness suffering? In this talk, Devin Berry reflects on passages from the Dhammapada related to compassion for others and ourselves in the face of dukkha. He shares that the Buddha described compassion as "the trembling of the heart in response to suffering." Especially in marginalized communities, we practice to create a refuge of belonging, which requires opening our heart. However, the habit of seeing those we encounter as 'other' can constrain our willingness to actively respond with care. Compassion requires a willingness to lean into suffering and be touched. ______________ Devin Berry is an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher. A meditator since 1999, his practice is primarily informed by the metta and vipassana teachings of the Insight Meditation tradition. He has undertaken many periods of silent long-term retreat practice. Devin is committed to the personal and collective liberation of marginalized communities knowing that through the integration of reflection and insight, clarity and wisdom give rise to wise action. Devin was mentored by Larry Yang, Lyn Fine, Joseph Goldstein, Carol Wilson and Andrea Fella. He lives in New England and the Bay Area and teaches nationally.  Support the show______________ To participate live and be notified of upcoming speakers in advance, please Like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/gaybuddhistfellowship) or visit https://gaybuddhist.org/calendar/ To support our efforts to share these talks with LGBTQIA audiences worldwide, please visit www.GayBuddhist.org.There you can: Donate Learn how to participate live Find our schedule of upcoming speakers Join our mailing list or discussion forum Enjoy many hundreds of these recorded talks dating back to 1996 CREDITSAudio Engineer: George HubbardProducer: Tom BrueinMusic/Logo/Artwork: Derek Lassiter

I'm SOOOO excited to talk about goals with you today BECAUSE I usually avoid talking about them. As someone who has studied goal setting pretty extensively, I get frustrated and ranty listening to how some people teach goal setting. But I love goals and I think I've gotten to the point in my own personal growth that I can add some serious value to this conversation without being judgy, snarky, or ranty – or too academic. I will also admit that I work with A LOT of people who are let's say – goal-challenged. They have a lot of “ish” when it comes to setting goals. In the past, I have sidestepped and baby stepped and given alternate ways to set goals, but really what's needed is an honest conversation and a way for you to think about this differently. In this episode we are going to cover: Why you shouldn't set SMART goals The benefits of having BIG goals Why big, hairy, audacious, goals (BHAGS) might not work for you And if you are a person who has struggled with setting goals, I'm giving you a new framework for you to dig into. Some of what I'm presenting to you here today like the new framework has come from the book Performance Coaching: A complete guide to best practice coaching and training by Carol Wilson. Let's start with the problem with SMART goals. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential 90s musicians and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in the book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, we feature Andy McCluskey from OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark). Andy has a story about a happy accident that, if it hadn't happened, we likely wouldn't have ever heard any of their classic songs like "If You Leave," "Electricity," "Enola Gay," and others. Many thanks to Andy for sharing his story and to additional guests Lindsay Reade and Carol Wilson for adding their memories. There are so many benefits to mindfulness with one of the biggest being the cultivation of more self-awareness. This cultivation can lead to identifying the unhelpful mental habits that can develop over the years.Today we're going to talk to Carol Wilson who offers very clear and practical ways that Buddhist meditation can help us turn down the volume on our unproductive mental habits and be less reactive.Wilson is a guiding teacher at the Insight Meditation Society, where for many years she has taught their annual three-month retreat. She began her insight meditation practice in 1971 in India and in the 1980s she spent a year in Thailand as a Buddhist nun. In this episode we talk about:How to be mindful throughout the dayThe concept of 360 degree awarenessNoticing when one experiences wanting or aversion Why Wilson believes that the root of suffering comes from making it all about usHow seeing torment can help us experience freedom from the selfThe benefits of reflecting on your past acts of generosity Bringing awareness to your motivationsAnd doing a gratitude practice regularly to change the weather pattern in your mindFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/carol-wilson-481See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
