The shameful treatment of pioneer women footballers 50 years ago is the subject of a new documentary Copa 71, which is screening now. Rapturous crowds of over 100,000 fans cheered 18 year old Carol Wilson as she captained England at the 1971 women's football World Cup in Mexico. The experience was a stark contrast to the reception she and other women players received at home. The UK Football Association, which had banned women from playing for 50 years, refused to endorse the tournament and tried to shut it down. To this day the team Carol represented is not recognised by the FA as an official England team, which has earned them the moniker of 'The Lost Lionesses'.

Podcast Overview: Hannah & Will discuss performance anxiety & coping mechanisms, how Hannah's career grew so quickly, having a dance track in the UK top 10 charts and knowing her sound. Who is Hannah Laing: Having cemented herself as a true maven of the peak time banger via a series of high-energy features on the likes of Solardo's Sola, Patrick Topping's TRICK, Jax Jones Presents and Spinnin' Records, a succession of sell-out club nights under her own outfit, plus upcoming shows at the likes of DC10 and Warehouse Project — it's hard to look away from Dundee born-and-raised DJ and producer Hannah Laing's unstoppable trajectory to the top. Rapturous new single ‘Climax' on WUGD joins a slew of big room, blissed-out anthems spanning house, techno and everything in between — including her knockout 2019 bootleg of Sophie Ellis Bextor's iconic 2001 hit ‘Murder On The Dancefloor', a rework that earned Laing global acclaim and the notice of some of the biggest names in the business, including FISHER who dropped the track during most sets in 2019. Rapturous is an adjective that means expressing or feeling great pleasure. Our word of the day is derived from the Latin word raptus (ROP toos) which means ‘to seize.' From this word, rapture entered the English language in the late 16th century. Rapturous is the adjective version. Here's an example of it in use. The first ten minutes of the movie had a rapturous grip on me. That fast-paced chase scene really seized my attention. But once the tedious love story began, my attention began to wander.

Andrew Dickens: High Court mandate decision will be greeted by protestors with rapturous glee

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2022 3:43

As if things weren't already pretty intense in this world, here comes a court decision that will be greeted by the vax mandate protestors with rapturous glee and really put the cat amongst the pigeons. The High Court has upheld a challenge to a vaccine mandate covering police and NZDF staff in a judgment released today at 2 pm.Justice Cook has ruled that the mandates were not reasonable or justified in a free and democratic society.Because a very small number of Police and NZDF staff were holding out on the vaccinations, it found that a mandate was not necessary to either aid vaccination rates or operational efficiencies. They basically made a big heavy law for just 100 people at a workforces that had just over 10,000.Justice Cook noted that the Police and Defence Forces instated vax policies which worked with the unvaccinated in a reasonable manner. For example, the Defence Force had already negotiated with an unvaxxed staff member and decided he could continue to work, but of course, would do so from home. But then the vax mandate law was introduced, and the Defence Force had no option but let this guy go, this guy was not a problem, they'd sorted the problem already, the law came in, he became a problem, he was gone.In other words, the vaccine mandate in these two employment groups was a very big stick that wasn't needed in the opinion of the High Court and Justice Cook. The Police and Defence Force had it covered and the Government didn't need to stick its big fat nose in.This is obviously a big mistake by the Government by enshrining these mandates into a badly written law, the Government made them challengeable. And guess what? Someone came out and challenged them. That gives them the chance of losing, and guess what? They did lose. And when you lose something like this you lose big time. You lose face big time, you lose credibility big time.According to the lawyers who took the action who I talked to today earlier, Minister Michael Wood knew that the mandate law was a big ugly stick and carried on with the mandate law because of some sort of ideologically-driven need to make the mandates a law rather than use the grownups involved in the police and defence forces the chance to use their common sense and negotiate reasonable outcomes between the unvaxxed and vaxxed, which they'd already done. This is all an unnecessary problem for the Government. And here's the run: this decision is quite specific. It's certainly not anti-vax in no way, shape or form, but it's about the mandate laws written for Police and Defence Forces. So teachers will be looking at this with a very, very interested eye. And will there be even more action?Meanwhile, the Government has to decide whether they're going to appeal it and throw good taxpayers' money after bad written law.And as we head into the weekend, the protestors at Government and all their buddies around the country will sit there and hear the words and all they'll hear is “vaccine mandate unlawful” and they will feel vindicated, and their resolve is going to harden, and you can already imagine what their placards will say.

The third book of the Patañjali yoga sutras, the Vibhūti Pāda, is often skipped over in modern yoga teacher trainings. Why? Its descriptions of supernatural powers — of yogis who can shrink to the size of an atom, fly, and read minds — can cause cognitive dissonance or discomfort in the modern mind. Yet right in the heart of this discussion of the extraordinary powers is an animate, rapturous vision that is concurrent with the experience of human ritual culture dating back in an unbroken line to the Paleolithic. This is, in fact, the animist chapter of the yoga sutras, which is precisely why it's ignored. Today on the podcast, we look at the rapturous vision of the Vibhūti Pāda, which arrived at a time when the old ways of trance and animal powers were butting up against new doctrines of transcendence. With source references as diverse as Italian scholar Roberto Calasso and the Wu-Tang Clan, we can safely say this is like no other commentary on the yoga sutras that you've ever heard. And if it ruffles a few scholarly feathers, so be it. Enjoy. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/theemeraldpodcast)

Sordid Cinema Podcast #546: ‘The Passion of the Christ’ – Torturous or Rapturous?

This week the hosts of the Sordid Cinema Podcast take a look at Mel Gibson’s 2004 monster hit, The Passion of the Christ. While the film is known primarily for its extreme level of violence and the controversies surrounding its release, does the film actually accomplish what it sets out to do? Is there a point to all the suffering? Rick and Patrick try to get to the heart of the matter, doing our best to remember the Stations of the Cross while debating the artistic merits of Gibson’s context-reliant storytelling. The Passion may be hard to enjoy, but there’s no doubt it’s a film that offers plenty to talk about. As usual, we discuss our favorite scenes, wistfully mention a few things we might have changed, and wonder if this violent biblical epic will stand the test of time. For all this and more, have a listen!  Listen to the show on SpotifyListen to the show on YouTubeListen to the show on iTunesListen to the show on StitcherListen on Google PlayListen to the show on Podbean

FOLLOW UP: VW TO FACE CLASS-ACTION IN UKFollowing the ruling, this week, Volkswagen does have a case to answer in the UK class-action case over #Dieselgate. Whilst the judge has ruled, in line with several other countries, that the software and technology in certain engines is a defeat device, there is no confirmation that VW is liable in the compensation claim. When asked why he was on the road, he stated that he’d gone to London for bread, as it was £1.00 cheaper there. This has been met positively, unlike when ‘Heck’ was put over ‘Peas’. To read more, click the BBC News article here.MARCH 2020 NEW CAR REGISTRATIONSObviously, we are not in normal times, which has been partly reflected in the new car registration figures released by SMMT, for March. Overall figures are down 44.4%, with electrified vehicles bucking the trend and showing an increase on last year, which can be aligned to new BIK rules expected from April. Andrew and Alan run through the ‘Spreadsheet of Doom’ in mercifully quick time as they only talk about the positives. To read more, click the SMMT article here.DECARBONISING TRANSPORT IN THE UK REPORTThe Transport Secretary released a report into the plan to decarbonise UK transportation recently, which Andrew has looked at. To his, frankly, astonishment, it is well written and very interesting. Within the document, there are graphs that go to show how much passenger cars contribute to the UK’s overall emissions. The news is startling. However, it does help to explain why a large number of initiatives and ideas are focused on cars. To read it and also gain a better understanding of where we currently are and where we need to move to, click the link here.EXTENT OF TYRE POLLUTION INVESTIGATEDAs the focus of vehicle emission has been on power plants, now that they are cleaning up other elements that pollute are becoming known. Tyres have been investigated by Emissions Analytics, who has found great variations depending on the actual tyre, road surface, road layouts and driving styles. Vehicles that are heavier and develop more torque increase the wear of tyres, which is potentially bad news for EVs and SUVs. However, more research is required which could possibly result in new tyre labels or even the banning of some. To read more click here for the Motoring Research article and for a more in-depth article, click here to read about it from Tire Technology.OLD FASHIONED TOYS MAKING A COMEBACKAs a result of lockdown in the UK, there has been an increase in toys such as slot cars and model railways being purchased. Anyone who follows the podcast will know Alan has bought a remote control car that he is in the middle of constructing, now surprises that he selected a Toyota Yaris WRC. This is a cautionary tale, in more ways than one, for example, you can get set up without spending anywhere near as much as he did, also maybe don’t explain to your partner how much you’ve spent! To read more, click The Drive article here.LUNCHTIME READ: RACE AGAINST TIMEThis week’s Lunchtime Read is about motorsport photographer Drew Gibson and how he took THAT fabulous shot of the Ford GTs at Spa. Fifty years ago at The Stonewall Inn, gay pride took the form of a riot, not a parade. This week, we speak with a group of LGBTQIA+ leaders who each have a different relationship to being out and proud. We've come a long way they say, but in the next 50 years, we have a long way to go. My idea of a good date movie is "Shaun of the Dead." So maybe I'm not the best person to be making Valentine's Day recommendations. So as much as I hate Cupid's silly holiday, here's a Valentine to Wong Kar-Wai.

Kat deftly moves from strength to strength in everything she touches. Transcendent as the Fairy Godmother in Company XIV's Baroque-Burlesque interpretation of Cinderella. Rapturous at a sold-out Joe's Pub performance in December 2015. I've been a lifelong fan since I first bought his live album, Stage, on double- vinyl at my local library for 50 cents.
