Anxiety has long been a massive societal issue that spiked during the pandemic, and many of us are still feeling it in 2025. In this episode, renowned Buddhist monk Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche talks in detail about how he personally works with anxiety and panic and the practices he draws upon when dealing with these states.  Mingyur began doing long retreats in his teens and now teaches all over the world.  He's written the books The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness and In Love with the World: A Monk's Journey Through the Bardos of Living and Dying. After graduating from Harvard University in 1995, he spent several years in medical school before leaving his chosen career as a doctor to seek out a different path. It was while traveling in India that he was introduced to insight meditation. Since that time, Alexis has practiced in many meditative styles and traditions, including with Sayadaw U Tejaniya, the Thai Forest tradition with Ajahn Sumedho, the Tibetan tradition with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and within the lay Western insight community where he continues to learn from the growing diversity of voices. Today I am joined by Alexis Santos. Alexis has been in the field of mindfulness and meditation since 2001. After graduating from Harvard University in 1995, he spent several years in medical school before leaving his chosen doctor career to seek a different path. It was while travelling in India that he was introduced to insight meditation. Since that time, Alexis has practised in many meditative styles and traditions, including Sayadaw U Tejaniya, the Thai Forest tradition with Ajahn Sumedho, the Tibetan tradition with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and within the lay Western insight community where he continues to learn from the growing diversity of voices. Alexis's primary teacher has been Sayadaw U Tejaniya, from the Burmese Theravada tradition, with whom he was ordained as a Buddhist monk from 2003 - 2005. Sayadaw encouraged Alexis to teach in 2012. Alexis also completed the Spirit Rock/IMS four-year teacher training program with Jack Kornfield and others, including mentors Joseph Goldstein and Carol Wilson.  Alexis teaches meditation at retreat centers around the world. In today's episode, our guest will be discussing her journey and experiences and how they led her to what she is currently doing with her clients. Social media handles https://spunkyspiritualist.com/  https://www.facebook.com/SpunkySpiritualist/  My story started when I immigrated, but it was more like a night of the soul experience where I was depressed and suffered through a lot, and years later when life got better, I did not deal with the mess but just suppressed it and kept going. [3:55] It took me all the way into while I was in pharmacy school and at the time it seemed like nothing was wrong in my life but in reality, I was miserable and then my friend commented that she wished she had a relationship like mine. [4:39] I responded that it was not that great but immediately right after my coping mechanisms jumped right in and I started giving excuses. [5:18] It was a beautiful moment because it seems like my best friend knew me better than I did myself. [5:34] I became very open and vulnerable and shared with her about my past where I got into a lot of relationships I shouldn't be in and I hated myself a lot. [5:50] I always thought I had to earn happiness by doing a lot of things and just play every role perfectly which was just tiring. [6:12] So that was a saving grace, she also opened up and become vulnerable and share with me her past and it turned out that we were very similar. [6:46] What stuck with me is not about our past, but about how we were adamant that each other deserve the best happiness. [6:55] It took me a few months later while driving along and I have this simple epiphany that if I swap places with my best friend, I will never, ever even think to consider her any less. [7:09] I realized that I was hard on myself and forgave myself and that self-forgiveness was what kick-started my spiritual journey. [7:27] Immediately after I forgave myself, it was like an overnight effect that I felt that the burden was off and that I didn't have to pretend anymore. [7:39] I realized what I was feeling was valid so I took stock of my life on what's working and what was not. [7:50] A year later after I started my journey, I became ready then I met my teacher on Facebook and learned meditation. [8:26] With the work I do as a retail pharmacist, at one point my life was chaotic but with the foundation and the practice I had, there was always a sense of calm and being grounded that almost felt palpable. [9:15] I wished everybody would feel that but it is not always available for everyone and so it is from that wish that I started the business. [10:07] In my work now I help with busy professionals and high achievers where we walk the pattern through relationships, tracing back with their thought patterns beliefs, and perceptions, and how they view life and themselves. [10:24] What worked at the moment that I and my friend had was the kind of relationship we had where we were both understanding of each other and there was great trust. [12:43] We don't always have this kind of trust and understanding with family members or intimate relationships due to expectations but with friends it is different. [12:58] I think that trust, security, and understanding helps open up the conversation and sharing to be vulnerable where without it we just can't get to get down to the bottom to the truth. [13:56] Most of us are just not caring about ourselves. It is so much easier for us to have compassion for others and forget ourselves in the process. [15:15] Part of the healing process is to learn to know ourselves, take it with grace and give us a lot of love and compassion. [15:34] Commercial break [16:20] I was lucky to grow up in Asia, Vietnam which is a very spiritual country and even if we have no religion, 100% of Vietnamese have ancestorship. [18:20] I was always begging my mum to go see a psychic which she did much later when I was eighteen and after that, I just got sucked into it. [18:48] After a while, I started getting a lot of psychic reading and became like a dependency which was very unhealthy. [19:07] When I got to the US that trait of mine continued and later on I got exposed to the Tarot which was different from how it was done in Vietnam. [19:38] I got this urge and curiosity to go explore and I realized that I could do it which was quite surprising to me because I never thought I could do it. [20:30] So my brand is very analytical and nowhere intuitive at all. [21:10] Tarot is interesting to me because it has a system or guideline on which I can rely and not be completely lost and overwhelmed. [21:29] The beautiful thing about the Tarot is there is a lot of archetypes and is applicable in so many aspects of our life. [23:18] Later on, when I started my spiritual journey and awakening and started working with people I started noticing people also developing the same dependency tendency that I had before and therefore I stopped offering Tarot reading professionally. [23:44] It is also beautiful to just offer people an opportunity to explore their possibilities. [24:52] I think Tarot is a very good, personal tool to use for reflection and a great exploration tool to learn about oneself. [27:01] Another way that I have seen people use the Tarot a lot is when writers encounter writer's blocks. [27:37] A lot of artists also use the Tarot since it has so many themes and there is a lot of things that they can explore. [28:00] I would say any long-lasting fulfilling relationship that you ever wish in your life is so where you have to start at the solid foundation of the relationship with yourself. In Nepal, we went to this one little monastery and Karma and Pemba approached the shrine and very intentionally  put their hands to their forehead, to their lips, and then to their heart, while uttering a Tibetan mantra that means ‘homage to the Buddha', which they consider my highest self. Homage to the teachings, wisdom that has come before, and homage to the community, the interconnectedness of all things. That's the level of mindfulness they're operating from. Confidence often seems to go along with success in the art world—when talking about the business side of things, qualities like self-assurance, decisiveness, and the ability to speak well about your work are important. In the studio, confidence may take a more private form—the ability to try new things, or to carry through with major projects. While there's no doubt that confidence is a good thing, many artists feel they fall short of having it. Today we're going to talk about confidence in a somewhat philosophical way that may help see it more broadly. In this episode we reference a book by a Tibetan Buddhist monk, In Love with the World, by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche about a spiritual journey in which he cast off his status and the trappings his esteemed position and wandered in India for several years without any resources, no money or possessions. He wrote, "To be confident you have to accept impermanent conditions." This is the opposite of the way most of us think about confidence, as a quality that results from knowing what to expect. But really, we do not ever truly know what lies ahead; we are always dealing with the unknown. Past successful experience can give us a sense of confidence but things can always turn out differently. Many of us have developed aspects of ourselves that show true confidence but may we may not recognize them as such. All of us have met and dealt with adversity in our lives, and the ability to adapt and cope with whatever comes along is important to confidence. Confidence also encompasses a sense of trust when things are rough; going ahead even when you feel anxious. It means being prepared for what you can control but understanding that our personal control is limited. And finally, it means understanding how to support --and accept support-- from others. Confidence is a composite of many qualities that we practice all the time in daily life, rather than something that we either have, or we don't. As artists, confidence comes through in our willingness to try new things, to be flexible, to remain true to our own vision, trusting in our art process, and to find balance with our goals and expectations. As a dharma teacher, Devon supports practitioners with persona dharma mentoring, serves on retreat teams at the Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock, and offers meditation retreats with Craig throughout North America and Europe. His biggest influences have been Zentatsu Richard Baker-Roshi, Joseph Goldstein, and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. Craig lived in a Zen monastery for 6 years before getting his PhD in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he had the good fortune to learn from neuroscientist Richard Davidson and contemplative scholar John Dunne, among other luminaries. #6: How Can We Inspire Ourselves With Humor

I’m bringing a new kind of inspiration to this episode of the Yoga Inspiration Podcast! You may not realize it, but humor is so important to our spiritual journey - especially right now. We can walk the line between appropriate and inappropriate humor, or we can use humor to help us and our fellow yoga students to cope, understand, and bring some light to an otherwise dark and confusing time. My guest, conscious comedian JP Sears, is here to discuss how humor can be a yogis best motivator. What I love most about humor is that it takes something that’s mysterious and makes it approachable. If you’ve ever been intimidated by a yoga studio, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Being able to laugh at your awkwardness or the silliness of the poses is a great way to relax and come into your own in a yoga class. For more practiced yoga students, humor is a great way to approach meditation and keep your ego in check. At least, that’s how JP does it. JP’s motivation for comedy came from a personal need to get his own big head back to size. He was quickly becoming aware of his own egotistical nature - as he calls it - and he wanted to bring himself back to earth.  As students of yoga, we aren’t immune to our own successes. Sometimes on our spiritual journey we can grow a little over-confident in our abilities and the role we play. That role puffs up an ego and influences the way we share our spirituality with others. Humor can be a way to tap into that side of our ego, to learn where it hides and how it feeds, and ultimately laugh at it (and ourselves).  Just like yoga students, comedians have layers. When you start to peel away the layers of their jokes, you realize that they are making some serious points. We peel away some of JP’s jokes on this episode and really talk about what it means to be a comedian during the Coronavirus. Because there’s not too much humor in this situation. There’s a lot of fear, a lot of anxiety, and JP points out ways we can still laugh in the face of trauma without disrespecting the severity of our situation. With humor, timing is everything. Navigating when is the right time to make a joke is one big topic we discuss on this episode. Humor isn’t always going to be an appropriate response for everyone, but there are ways to use humor in a way that’s inspiring without being inappropriate.  How can we inspire ourselves with humor? JP says to look at our lives as a spiritual practice. Too often we compartmentalize our yoga journey and our spirituality. It becomes something we only do on the yoga mat or when we meditate, which is kind of silly when you think about it. JP looks at his experiences and his relationships all as spiritual practices. Every day there are opportunities to learn by fire and discover new layers of yourself, and you don’t have to be in a yoga studio to do it.  I hope that taking this kind of approach to your spiritual journey - and being able to laugh along the way - will inspire you to continue your yoga practice throughout these sheltered times. Being able to laugh at ourselves can be immensely healing. I know that, personally, I would not have been able to work on my higher spiritual journey if I wasn’t able to laugh. When JP interviews me at the end of this episode, I explain how humor tackled my internal antagonistic paradigm of achievement, and I hope it helps you to see how humor and laughter can encourage your spiritual journey. #4: Yoga In The Age of Coronavirus

We are sitting with so much uncertainty these days. I know many of us have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic, and it’s put many of us in a difficult space. Even the most dedicated yoga practitioners are having a hard time, myself included. I’m turning to my yoga community for guidance right now, and I’m sharing their responses with you on this episode. Hearing real stories from fellow yogis can help us through this in-between stage of not-knowing. Uncertainty is a common trigger for many anxieties, and just being able to discuss these fears with others can be a huge relief. Especially when we can’t leave our homes to see friends or even get out to our favorite yoga studios.  If yoga teaches us anything right now it is that it’s impossible to try and deny our depressive or anxious emotions. In order to become a whole person, we must embrace the darkness. Yoga is about embracing the darkest, most vulnerable sides of ourselves and recognizing that this, too, shall pass. Everything is of cycles, and we will not be in this uncertain state forever.  Much of what I talk about in this episode is inspired by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche’s book In Love with the World. With it I discuss the Buddhist Bardo states, especially the Bardo of the unknown and the transient. It acts as my guidance on this inner journey of my mind as I process the uncertain situations happening around me. I hope to inspire my fellow yogis struggling with their own anxieties.  You are a student of yoga, and you have the strength within you to bear the brunt of these uncertain times. Yoga practice is designed to help us get through challenges just like these. Meditation, breathing exercises, and centering yourself within yourself are all techniques made to ease the mind and soothe anxiety.  The responses I share in this episode vary across the board. I work with many yoga students from across the globe, and we are all in varying degrees of social distancing and lockdown. But right now, it seems we are all sharing the same grateful attitude for having our yoga practice.  The reality of yoga right now is that it’s available to us whenever we need it. Whether you’re using this time to develop a home yoga practice or taking an online yoga class, just make sure all of your thoughts and actions are aligned with supporting a balance within yourself. In this episode we speak with Karma Kagyu teacher, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. He starts off by telling us about how he got into formal Buddhist practice, at the tender age of 9. He also shares some of his initial challenges with anxiety, and how he was able to work with it on his first 3-year retreat. Rinpoche also shares some suggestions for meditators who are fairly new to the path, suggesting that they focus on 1) Wisdom & 2) Method. In addition to that he speaks about what makes a good teacher and whether or not it is vital to practice in a particular lineage. We finish our interview with Rinpoche discussing the importance of Joy on the Buddhist path, and of what he calls “Boundless Joy.” Tying in with that he shares what it was like participating in the meditative research conducted by Dr. Richard Davidson, and what the results of that study were.
