The 1996 Sundance hit indie "Girls Town" has gotten the 4K restoration treatment thanks to Indie Collect (a company run by former Filmwax guest Sandra Schulberg). The film is the directing debut of guest Jim McKay, and stars Lili Taylor, Bruklin Harris, Aunjanue Ellis and other guest Anna Grace. The plot follows a group of girl friends and their coming-of-age during their senior year of high school in urban America. The screenplay for the film was mostly developed through improvisations among the four lead actresses. GIRLS TOWN is currently enjoying a theatrical release at the IFC Center in NYC and is expected to have a nationwide expansion in the coming months. It will be available in its newly restored version later this year or early 2026. Jim and Anna are my guests.

Ep. 275: Rumours Directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson Talk About Movies Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week sees the release of Rumours, the new movie from Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson. It's about a remote gathering of world leaders (played by Cate Blanchett and Roy Dupuis among others) who face a looming crisis and encounter a giant brain in a forest -- for starters. During the New York Film Festival, I jumped at the chance to chat with the filmmakers about movies. The conversation had two parts: movies related to Rumours in some way, and then (taps sign) the last things each filmmaker had seen, whether in a cinema or at home. Their wide-ranging answers were an absolute delight, which I won't spoil here! Rumours opens on October 18, including screenings at IFC Center moderated by executive producer Ari Aster and Owen Kline. Through Oct. 17, IFC Center is also showing a Guy Maddin retrospective including Careful, Brand Upon the Brain!, Tales from the Gimli Hospital, My Winnipeg, The Forbidden Room, and more. Amy Nicholson is a New York-based filmmaker and commercial director whose projects often explore the essence of Americana with a humorous eye and a warm respect for her subjects. Nicholson's most recent documentary, a short titled Pickle, won multiple audience awards, was selected for The New York Times' Op-Docs, and was featured on the Criterion Collection alongside Errol Morris' Gates of Heaven. Pickle was also nominated for an IDA Award and Cinema Eye Honors. Nicholson has produced and directed several features. Zipper: Coney Island's Last Wild Ride won the Special Jury Prize at DOCNYC and was held over twice at the IFC Center. Muskrat Lovely premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival and was broadcast on Independent Lens. Nicholson's films have screened at Hot Docs, Sheffield, Full Frame, DOK Leipzig, BFI London, Camden, Traverse City, Rooftop Films, and the MoMA. They have been reviewed by Variety, Indiewire, The Hollywood Reporter, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.   HAPPY CAMPERS chronicles the final days of a working-class summer colony in a scrappy trailer park that just happens to hold the secret to a rich life. In a waterfront campground off the coast of Virginia, residents spend their summers living spitting distance apart in rust-bitten RVs. They chuckle about the modest rent they pay for a million-dollar location, but what makes them the luckiest people in the world is more than just stunning sunsets, it's the community they've created. Beneath cliched trailer park stereotypes lies an unlikely utopia where all are welcome. Neighbors help each other out, and share everything from power tools to simple pleasures. Loneliness and isolation are inconceivable.  When their affordable paradise is sold to developers, the residents brace for eviction and the loss of friendships that span generations. They hold tight to their final days in the sun. The well-heeled crowd that takes their place will never be as wealthy. Jeff Cerulli! Comedian! Documentarian! Friend! Guy with a new special out now called "Live at the Bomb Shelter"! ABOUT THE SPECIAL: NYC-based comedian, writer and filmmaker Jeff Cerulli and Comedy Dynamics are pleased to announce the release of Live at the Bomb Shelter, Cerulli's debut full-length comedy special, out now everywhere comedy can be streamed. Cerulli takes the stage at NYC's Bomb Shelter for an hour of comedy that takes viewers on a hilarious journey through growing up on Long Island, the true crime craze, the joys of being a dog-dad, getting engaged after 10 years, and the struggles of helping an aging parent. Notably Cerulli gets into the bad NYC apartments I've lived in: “I had to move about a year ago because my last apartment was filled with lead…which is not what you want.”   Cerulli always loved stand up comedy, and knew he would try it one day. He started running comedy shows in his 20s - a great way to land consistent stage time. “I have run so many random shows at different places in the city that most of the bars are now either a 7/11 or a Citibank”. The Bomb Shelter is a weekly comedy show run by Cerulli since 2016 in the basement of the Gaf West - one of the best independent comedy rooms in New York, super-intimate with low ceilings, a hot pipe and Christmas lights all year round. Says Cerulli: “There isn't anything else like it, going up and telling jokes without a net. It is the only artform you must practice in front of strangers to get better.”  Cerulli is a filmmaker as well as a comedian, with multiple documentaries, web-series, and short films to his credit. Thus, he opted to make his own special a DIY affair, hiring amazing DP friend Ari Rothschild to shoot and run sound, and Paul Levin from International Digital Centre to mix. Cerulli edited Live at the Bomb Shelter himself, deftly switching hats: “I have been doing comedy for a long time, I have enough material, just do it.“ Cerulli took it to Comedy Dynamics because he loves what they are doing in the comedy space and was thrilled that they came aboard to distribute.  ABOUT JEFF CERULLI: Jeff Cerulli is a NYC-based stand-up comedian and filmmaker who has performed all around the world. Jeff has been featured on Sirius radios Jim & Sam show, Amazon Game Breakers, The Laugh Button & Decider. His web series The Feed earned critical praise - The Observer said “it hits too close to home” and Paste called it “a sly satire on social media.” Jeff's feature-length documentary debut Hungry premiered at the IFC Center as part of the DOC NYC film festival. His latest documentary Tasteless, about the ever-changing comedy landscape, is currently available on Apple TV. Jeff currently hosts the podcast Your Team's Stuff where he invites a guest to judge memorabilia he finds off eBay for their favorite sports team ABOUT THIS PODCAST: Listen and enjoy! Co-director Abbas Rezaie debut feature documentary takes the viewer inside the office of the city's most widely read newspaper, The Etilaat Roz. The film is a gripping firsthand account of the August 2021 takeover of Kabul by the Taliban. Afghan filmmaker and Etilaat Roz staff member Abbas Rezaie relentlessly films and questions his passionate colleagues on the editorial team in the days leading up to, during, and after the takeover as they try to decide whether to stay and continue reporting - risking torture, imprisonment and death - or join thousands of others attempting to flee the country. What begins as shock at a surreal situation gradually shifts to realization of an inescapable reality at their doorstep.  Tensions rise as Rezaie's colleagues must balance their families' safety with their dedication to providing honest reporting, while the Taliban sets its sights on curbing the free press. This dramatic account of a group of courageous journalists in their struggle for truth, freedom and life is poignantly captured by Rezaie's camera, fully immersing the viewer in this rapidly changing environment. We are joined by the co-director and editor-in-chief of Etilaat Roz Zaki Daryabi for a conversation on the harrowing days of dread and fear that Daryabi and his colleagues endured watching their beloved country fall under the heavy hand of the Taliban, fearing for their lives and being forced to abandon the offices and the mission of Etilaat Roz. Julie's life-saving work stems from her brother Jonathan's untimely death from a heroin overdose 20 years ago. ONLY IN THEATERS, a film by actor/director Raphael Sbarge (Emmy Nominated for directing “LA FOODWAYS,”) is an intimate and moving journey taken with the Laemmle family, spanning nearly three years of challenges, losses, and personal triumphs. There has been a Laemmle in the movie business since there's been a movie business. Their beloved Arthouse Cinema chain with an astonishing Hollywood legacy has, for four generations, been dedicated to elevating the art of filmmaking and the filmmakers who make them. Responsible for bringing foreign film to Los Angeles and popularizing countless foreign independent films and their filmmakers, the Laemmle Theatres' impact on Hollywood and world cinema cannot be overstated. In a world of growing conglomeration, the Laemmle circuit of theatres has become even more of an anomaly: a family-owned and operated art house theatre chain. Filmed over 2 1/2 years, Only in Theaters chronicles a family business, and their determination to survive. But in a changing world this is also a story about the future of Cinema. Interviews with Ava DuVernay, Cameron Crowe, James Ivory, Nicole Holofcener, and others. In the film The Evening Hour, director Braden King wanted to immerse the viewer in a fully formed world, with spare dialog and little exposition. This approach appealed to cinematographer Declan Quinn, ASC. With such little dialog, Declan paid close attention to finding the right camera placement, how each scene was composed and how the images told the story, with natural and motivated lighting. The Evening Hour tells the story of Cole Freeman, a health aid at a nursing home who lives in a fictional rural West Virginia town. He makes a little extra money on the side selling his client's prescription medication, until an old friend comes back to the Appalachian town and tries to convince Cole to get further involved in the drug trade. The film was shot entirely on location in Kentucky. Braden specifically wanted to shoot in autumn in order to capture the beauty of that time of year and show in images the collapse of these rural towns due to the opioid epidemic and the risk of environmental destruction by mining companies. Declan enjoyed actually shooting on location in the real Appalachia, instead of having to fake it on a soundstage or in a different area. He was able to freely capture everything in the environment, letting the art of cinematography work its magic in the film. The Evening Hour is screening in limited release in New York at the IFC Center and Los Angeles at the Laemmle Monica on August 6th. https://www.laemmle.com/film/evening-hour Twitter & Instagram: @eveninghourfilm Braden King: www.bradenking.com Twitter:@bradenking Instagram: @truckstop Find Declan Quinn: https://www.artistry.net/clients/directors-of-photography/declan-quinn-asc#category=narrative Find out even more about this episode, with extensive show notes and links: http://camnoir.com/ep134/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

A lot of time is spent on this podcast defending the multitude of roles that pornography plays in people’s lives. We say, it’s not a moral scourge, it’s not an enemy of feminism, it’s not corrupting young minds any more than any other media form. The academic study of pornography was established in a defensive mode, against second-wave anti-porn feminists, against the lies perpetuated by the church, against the forces fighting sex-worker rights. And because of this defensive posture, it’s jarring whenever we see the mainstream media portray pornography in a sensible, non-hysterical, perspective. This is what makes the Netflix documentary Circus of Books such a revelation! Circus of Books tells the story of a gay pornography video and book store in West Hollywood that endured as a staple in this gayborhood through the AIDS crisis and the mainstreaming of gay culture that has willfully abandoned its porn past in favor of getting married and joining the military. In this documentary, pornography, and the community build around this store, is presented as a positive, unifying force where the gay community can indulge their sexual desires without shame But while the store served as a beacon of hope during dark times, the owners weren’t as invested in the erotic potentiality of pornography as their customers. And that’s because the owners of this store are a heterosexual, highly religious, married couple! And while they have no problem with the gay community, their worldview is shaken when their own son struggles to come out as gay to his religious mother. This creates a unique dynamic and tension that brings this documentary to the next level. In this episode, I’m joined by one of the film’s producers, Adam Baran. Adam is an interesting character because most of his work deals with pornography and gay sexuality in a very straightforward and blunt fashion. Within an environment where being a buttoned-up sexless chairman of a Fortune 500 company is considered to be a quote-unquote “victory” for the gay rights movement, Baran insistently positions gay sexuality and pornography as an essential part of what it means to be gay in the contemporary age. Baran has produced music videos, short films, web series, and documentaries emphatically positioning pornography and sexuality at the center of the gay experience. In this episode, we talk about how pornography helped him feel comfortable in his own skin and how writing about his own sex-life online led to bigger opportunities. An intimate study of the artistic process that contemplates the relationship between the sense of sight and artistic "vision," Evans’ film explores the quintessence of cinema: adventures in perception, subjectivity, and the imagination. Director /Producer Rodney Evans joins us for a conversation on ways in which creativity and artistic expression can manifest and how perceived limitations can be shattered. About the filmmaker: Rodney Evans is an award-winning fiction and documentary film writer, director and producer based in New York.  His debut feature film Brother To Brother won the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize in Drama. The film had its European premiere at The Berlin International Film Festival and garnered four Independent Spirit Award nominations. His second narrative feature, The Happy Sad, played at over thirty film festivals throughout the world and had its U.S. theatrical premiere at the IFC Center in NYC and the Sundance Sunset Cinema in Los Angeles. Evans has taught at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Princeton and currently teaches at Swarthmore College. For news, screenings and updates go to: rodneyevansfilm.com

Perl Wolfe is a musician, songwriter, producer, makeup artist, and fashion designer. She is best known as the lead singer and co-founder of Bulletproof Stockings, an all-girl Hasidic rock band from Crown Heights, Brooklyn.    Born and raised in a Hasidic family in Chicago, IL, Perl showed an interest and aptitude for music early on. She began training in classical piano at the age of 5 and soon began performing in recitals and competitions. She sang in choirs throughout her childhood, but it wasn't until a move to NYC, that she began writing and performing original music.    After writing a number of songs in the spring of 2011, Wolfe set out to create an all-female band, hoping to build an empowering environment for women of all walks of life to come together through music. A few months into her search for musicians, Wolfe was introduced to drummer Dalia Shusterman, and Bulletproof Stockings was formed.    Wolfe's thoughtful, evocative lyrics, transportive melodies, and powerhouse vocal performances, quickly helped gain the first all-woman Hasidic rock band a following as well as media attention and acclaim. The first of its kind, Bulletproof Stockings was revolutionary, offering women a safe space that was entirely their own, in a rock music scene dominated by men.   Bulletproof Stockings grew a loyal fan base, produced an EP, “Down To The Top,” a full-length album, “Homeland Call Stomp,” and toured the country, performing in many legendary rock venues. In April 2016, after a whirlwind national tour, the group disbanded.   Perl is currently living in Chicago, where she is working on several music projects, including her first solo album. She recently wrote and performed music for the upcoming film, 93Queen, which premieres at the IFC Center in NYC on July 25th, and will air on PBS in September. While she has since opened up her live audience to include anyone and everyone, she still works to empower women, hiring many talented female musicians to perform on her upcoming album and tour. Look for Perl's first solo album, due out Spring 2019.   Facebook: facebook.com/perlmusic Instagram: @perlmusic Twitter: @perl_music

With the daily breaking news about mogul Harvey Weinstein and the growing charges of sexual harassment that has now permeated his life and the nation as a whole, this film is even more important. WHAT HAUNTS US tells the real story behind a town whose silence lead to the suicides of a disturbing number of victims. This film is a cautionary tale for parents and their children and a horrifying example of what happens when one stays quiet about sexual abuse/molestation. WHAT HAUNTS US tells the story about the 1997 class of Porter Gaud High School in Charleston, South Carolina that graduated 49 boys. Within the last 35 years, six of these boys committed suicide. Filmmaker Tolmach graduated from Porter Gaud, and now she digs deep with this film in discovering the dark secrets that have lingered and haunted this community that she so loves. The six boys that committed suicide featured in the film didn't have to die if they would have spoken out and not remained quiet about what had happened to them. However, the shame associated with this nightmare often weighs more on the victims - only to keep them silent. WHAT HAUNTS US is not a new story, but it is the continuing common tale of sexual abuse, molestation, shame and a community's silence so that "no one rocks the boat" rings all too true to this day. Until, we as concerned people speak up, these crimes against innocent victims will continue. WHAT HAUNTS US is directed by Paige Goldberg Tolmach and produced by Frank Marshall and Matt Tolmach. It is one of the new non-fiction films coming from THE KENNEDY/MARSHALL COMPANY DOCUMENTARY DIVISION. WHAT HAUNTS US will be screening at DOC NYC on November 13th at the IFC CENTER

The film had its world premiere at SXSW 2015, has screened over 50 times, garnered several awards, was voted one of the Top 10 Audience Favorites at Hot Docs Film Festival, and is nominated for a Cinema Eye Honors Award for Spotlight Doc.
