March 1st, 2025 Steele Creek is an area of southwest Charlotte, once its own town. Since the beginning, though, Steele Creek has been important to the history and culture of the Charlotte Area. Today we dive into the modern traces of history and the present-day population boom in the region. Whether it's the Charlotte Airport, Presbyterians, or an Outlet Mall, there's a lot to talk about. Today we are joined by Christopher Lawing, creator of the Charlotte Sign Project and the author of Charlotte: Signs of the Times. Segment 2, May 20th, 2023 Graduation is always an exciting time each year. The graduates are ready for whatever exciting future is ahead for them.  That next step. That next job. That next school. Recently, JB personalities, Angie Marshall & Christopher S. Lawing, did a presentation of graduation gift ideas on both Facebook & Instagram. Segment 1, January 20, 2023 So often we talk about the personalities of Jesse Brown's, the outdoor store of Charlotte. Charlotte sign expert, Christopher Lawing, joins Trent and Patrick on “At Home with Roby”.  Christopher loves signs and the history behind them.  So when working on a thesis project for his high school darkroom photography class, he decided to tell the history of Charlotte in a colorful and unique way.  The first sign that he photographed for his project was the “Jesus Saves” sign located on top of the now demolished Garr Memorial Church in the Wesley Heights community.  From this project, Christopher self-designed and self-published “Charlotte:  The Signs of the Times” in 2017.  His book has since evolved into a physical preservation effort that can be seen on full display in an exhibit at the Charlotte Museum of History titled "Charlotte: Signs of Home".  Christopher curated and designed this exhibit that opened in October 2021 and runs through June 2023.  Tune in the meet Christopher and receive an interesting history lesson on some of Charlotte's most iconic signs.  To purchase his book and learn more about the exhibit, visit https://www.cltsignsproject.com/.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(From 06.26.21, Segment 2) The Outdoor Guys, Bill and Wes, gather to chat about the closing of one of Charlotte's favorite restaurants, Price's Chicken Coop. Christopher Lawing, a Charlotte native, joins in to talk about his earliest memories of Price's as well as what he got as his last meal before the restaurant's closing. The Southend area of Charlotte has grown immensely in the past years and tall buildings now tower around Price's small location. After announcing their closing, Price's stayed open for 3 more days ensure people were able to enjoy their food one last time. During this segment, Bill and Wes also sit down with Wynne Mayeaux, fishing and surfing enthusiast, to find out more about the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. (From The 12/19/2020 Program) Historic names have been celebrated on road signs for centuries.  However, the city of Charlotte is reviewing some roads for name change due to historic and social sensitivities.  We're going to find out about four of the roads and their current namesakes with the Charlotte Signs Project director, Christopher Lawing.  Lawing is our sign expert and his insight helps us learn the reasons for the proposed changes.

Across the country for centuries, sightings of this mysterious creature have been reported – though with various names depending on the region. While this half-animal half-human is most famous for reportedly being located in the Pacific Northwest, Outdoor Guy Bill Bartee welcomes Christopher Lawing onto this segment of the Carolina Outdoors to speak on “Knobby's” local existence in Cleveland County, NC. This ‘local Bigfoot’ mystery has existed for centuries and has become a celebrated local in Marion, NC. Let's listen in and learn!

(From The 08/15/2020 Show) Now, let’s head to Mt. Airy, NC! Jesse Browns’ own Christopher Lawing joins the program to speak on this popular town which is just two hours north of Charlotte. The town started as a stagecoach stop in the 1750’s but is now known as ‘America's Mayberry.’ Why? Well, because it was the real-life inspiration of the "Andy Griffith Show" and spinoff “Mayberry RFD" from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Christopher also shares with host, Bill Bartee, some of the people and points of interest in Mt. Airy.

Located in Connelly Springs, NC (Burke County), South Mountain State Park offers view of an 80 ft. waterfall, as well as equestrian, mountain biking and hiking trails. There is also plenty of wildlife watching, swimming, and fishing available in this easy-to-access park between Morganton & Shelby.

Outdoor Pursuits after the rains & what it may mean for the fall leaf change and the May bloom of the Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies.  Plus, a quick breakdown of the upcoming Southern Spring Home & Garden Show.  Christopher Lawing is running the Jesse Brown’s shop & Don Yager is having a seminar “Let’s Fly Fish with Jesse Brown’s” on Saturday, 3/2, at 2 p.m. (on the stage).  

The Brooklyn community wasn’t a borough in New York City to the citizens of Charlotte.  It was predominantly black & included thriving African-American businesses, churches & schools.  It was razed in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s for newer buildings.  In fact, almost 1500 buildings were torn down in this Second Ward area of Charlotte.  Christopher Lawing of the Charlotte Signs Project & Jesse Brown’s knows some of the remaining buildings & shares with the Outdoor Guys.
