Charlotte has been on my mind a lot lately. Recently, I profiled the Queen City's Emanuel Wynter in the episode “Violin's Architect of Joyous Sound: Emanuel Wynter”, which followed a recent episode on Charlotte artist Sam Tayloe of the band Time Sawyer titled “New Stages for Time Sawyer and Their Hometown Festival”. Around the time I interviewed Emanuel Wynter, I was in Charlotte on two occasions for interviews that are coming to light here, in the first of a two part series on the public TV program After Dark, the brain child of the late Bill Barnes, who launched the series on WTVI in the late 1970s, continuing through 1984. Charlotte photographer, writer and music producer Daniel Coston came into possession of the audio of performances which were the foundation for After Dark episodes, and Daniel gave me the idea for this podcast and joined in as a co-producer.This episode features interviews with former WTVI staff, members of Charlotte bands The Spongetones and Sugarcreek, as well as Daniel Coston, along with audio excerpts of performances from both aforementioned bands as well as The Fabulous Knobs and New Grass Revival, whose performance was the debut for banjo player Bela Fleck and guitarist Pat Flynn. Along the way is a good bit of history of the scene in Charlotte and the region, focusing on the late 1970s to mid 1980s, but also going back to the days of the Crazy Water Crystals Saturday Night Jamboree, a “barn dance” program on AM radio station WBT beginning in 1933. Charlotte, NC public TV station WTVI staff in 1984 Bringing After Dark and Charlotte's Music Past Back to Light, Part One Joe Kendrick Download Songs heard in this episode:“Encourage Me” by The Fabulous Knobs, live at P.B. Please take a moment and give us a top rating on your podcast platform of choice, and where you can, a review. Doing either, and especially both, boosts the ranking and therefore the visibility of this series to all the other music fans who also follow podcasts. Daniel Coston has been a previous guest on this podcast in our series titled “The Music and Culture Episode” parts one and two, and New Grass Revival members Bela Fleck, Sam Bush and John Cowan have their own episodes on this series, as well as being guests on the three part series on Green Acres Music Hall. This is Southern Songs and Stories, where our quest is to explore and celebrate the unfolding history and culture of music rooted in the American South, and going beyond to the styles and artists that it inspired and informed. - Joe Kendrick

Buff Faye opens up about starring in Pageant Queens, the new reality series bringing a national spotlight to 10 legendary drag entertainers competing in the ultimate “Queen of Drag” competition for a $50,000 grand prize. Buff Faye the Queen of the Queen City proudly represents Charlotte and the Carolinas on a national stage. Buff dishes on her unforgettable Snow White-inspired competition talent, being underestimated by fellow contestants, facing criticism and body shaming, and proudly embracing her larger-than-life “South Beach type” energy. She also spills a little tea on the other queens competing in the series and shares how every obstacle became another opportunity to shine. Tune in, dolls- this episode delivers everything fans love about Buff Faye: camp, charisma, comedy, chaos, and heart. There's praise for the 'tight ship' Immigration New Zealand's running. Data released to Newstalk ZB reveals just over 65 thousand visa applications were turned down in 2025, plunging from more than 83 thousand in 2024. The rejection rate last year sat at around 6.3% – while the two years before both sat at 7.3%. Queen City Law Managing Director Marcus Beveridge told Mike Hosking Immigration New Zealand's making efficient decisions to keep the bad guys out. He says they've had computer and personnel issues in the past, but it now seems they've got things humming pretty well. There's also little surprise at the countries making up rejections – India made up almost a third of them, followed by China and Pakistan. Beveridge told Hosking India's seen similar numbers for years, as it's always been considered a high-risk country, but Fiji often sees quite a bad rejection rate as well. With Toronto on the rise a century ago, residents expected world-class offerings. Enter the 1926 Toronto Maple Leafs—led by the colorful “Howling Dan” Howley—and the construction of a sparkling state-of-the-art ballpark, Maple Leaf Stadium. D.M. Fox tells the story of a pivotal time in Toronto history. In this August Publications/Ballpark Digest podcast, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard sit down to discuss the newest August Publications title, The Howleyites: Toronto's Changing City, A Stadium Rising, and the Champions of 1926, with author D.M. Fox.Toronto was an international city on the rise in 1926, as Canada was starting to flex its muscles on the world stage diplomatically and economically. The country was making advances in medicine, literature, academia, the arts, and technology, and nowhere was this more evident than in Toronto. By virtue of its central location, the city was becoming a major manufacturing, financial, and transportation hub.Prosperity also created demand for leisure offerings, and baseball was one of the top entertainment draws of the era. Toronto's baseball scene featured a scenic but hard-to-access stadium on Hanlan's Point, and when entrepreneur Lol Solman sought to upgrade the baseball experience both on and off the field, he called upon a familiar face to put together the 1926 Toronto Maple Leafs. The result was a shiny new state-of-the-art facility, Maple Leaf Stadium, and an upgraded Maple Leafs roster, ready to challenge Jack Dunn's Baltimore Orioles for the International League title. And the new-look Leafs were led on the field by “Howling Dan” Howley, a baseball lifer with a fiery reputation: “full of the old paprika and hot tamale stuff that puts life in the game,” according to one scribe, experience formed by serving as Ty Cobb's right-hand man and chaperone to a young and wild Babe Ruth. With a roster of experienced hands and young talent like Carl Hubbell, The Howleyites fulfilled the high expectations of Torontonians with International League and Junior World Series titles. In this podcast episode, D.M. Fox discusses the baseball events of 1926 in the broader context of the rise of Toronto. The rise of the Maple Leafs in 1926 gave Toronto major league cred, presaging the creation of the Toronto Blue Jays 50 years later. Chronicling the rise of Toronto on the world stage and the emergence of the Maple Leafs in the baseball world, Fox tells the story of a fascinating time in Canadian history.
