Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. George Remus was a lawyer who knew the law better than anyone—and used it to become one of the most powerful criminals in American history. During Prohibition, Remus exploited legal loopholes to build a multimillion-dollar bootlegging empire, earning the title “The King of the Bootleggers.” But behind the lavish parties, hidden distilleries, and untouchable image was a man driven by ego, control, and obsession. When betrayal shattered his empire, Remus committed a shocking murder in broad daylight—then defended himself in court using the same legal strategy he had once invented. This episode explores the rise and fall of George Remus, the crime that stunned the nation, and how a murderer walked free in Prohibition-era America. Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. Bridges are meant to connect places—but sometimes, they connect us to tragedy, mystery, and unanswered questions. In this episode, we explore three bridges with notorious pasts, each carrying its own legacy making them stand out among the many Ohio bridges. We begin in Fremont, Ohio, at the Tindall Bridge, a quiet river crossing tied to violent deaths, local legends, and lingering paranormal claims. What happened here, and why has its story endured for generations? Next, we head north to Hillandale Park, Ohio, to uncover the strange history of the “Bridge to Nowhere.” Built with purpose but left isolated and unfinished, this forgotten structure raises questions about abandoned plans, lost industry, and why some places are simply left behind. Finally, we travel to Gallipolis, Ohio to revisit one of the most devastating infrastructure failures in American history—the Silver Bridge disaster of 1967. In a matter of seconds, a routine rush-hour commute turned into catastrophe, claiming 46 lives and forever changing how the nation inspects its bridges. From local legends and forgotten crossings to a nationally significant tragedy, this episode examines how bridges can become symbols of both connection and collapse—and why their stories still matter today. Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. On a cold winter night in December 1876, a passenger train thundered across the Ashtabula River in northeastern Ohio—never reaching the other side. In an instant, the bridge collapsed, sending railcars plunging into the icy ravine below. Fire erupted, screams echoed through the darkness, and one of the deadliest train disasters in American history unfolded. In this episode, we revisit the Ashtabula Train Disaster, an event that claimed more than 90 lives and shocked a rapidly industrializing nation. Through survivor accounts, newspaper reports, and historical analysis, we explore what went wrong—from flawed bridge design and ignored warnings to the chaotic rescue efforts that followed. But this story is more than a tragedy. The Ashtabula disaster sparked national outrage, exposed dangerous corners cut in the age of rail expansion, and ultimately led to sweeping reforms in engineering standards and public safety. Join us as we uncover the human stories, the haunting aftermath, and the lasting legacy of the night the bridge gave way. Step off the interstate and into a different kind of ride. We open with gratitude for a listener who reminded us that joy is a worthy destination, then point our front wheels toward the slower roads that reshape how we see, breathe, and connect. The smells change, the pace softens, and the world stops rushing past. That's where the ride becomes more than miles.Guided by William Least Heat-Moon's Blue Highways, we explore a simple rule that changes everything: skip the main highways and follow the quiet lines on the map. It's not about nostalgia; it's about attention. We talk through why motion calms the mind, how rhythmic travel acts like moving meditation, and why the most meaningful moments happen when the kickstand goes down and the helmet comes off. The real treasure isn't the scenery alone, but the people you meet when you choose to linger—waitresses with town histories, old-timers at gas pumps, and strangers with road tips you'll never find on an app. You'll hear a practical challenge to turn philosophy into practice: plan a highway‑free route, build in stops, and start one real conversation. Trade speed for presence and efficiency for curiosity. Whether you ride Colorado dirt or county lanes in Italy, this approach turns any afternoon into a story worth keeping. Along the way, we tackle the myth that the world is mostly unfriendly, and we make the case that kindness is common—you just have to leave room for it.If this resonates, share it with a rider who needs a calmer road, subscribe for more mindful moto stories, and tell us your name, where you're from, and what you ride. Your blue highway is out there—ready to find it with us? Tags: Mindfulness, Motorcycle riding, mindful motorcycling, motorcycle therapy, nature connection, peace on two wheels, Rocky Mountain tours, rider self-discovery, spiritual journey, motorcycle community, open road philosophy.
Have you ever thought of your professional life as a series of highways and backroads, and wondered how to navigate? On this show, Sam Passey, Associate Dean of Library Services at Colorado Mountain College, shares his model for navigating organizational stoplights and roundabouts to better avoid congestion and ensure smooth progress.
Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. Founded in 1898 on 240 acres of farmland donated to the state, Massillon State Hospital opened its doors under the name Eastern Ohio Mental Asylum. Its first patients came from 21 Ohio counties. At its peak in the 1950s, the hospital housed more than 3,100 patients and employed roughly 365 staff — part of what many regarded as one of “the most beautiful institutions in the world.” But as treatments and mental-health policies evolved, the massive institution began to shrink. By the mid-1970s many patients were transferred out, and over decades the facility gradually shifted identities — eventually becoming Heartland Behavioral Health Center. The origins: how farmland donated by early settlers became a state asylum. Lives within the walls: personal stories, struggles, and survival in a sprawling mental-health institution. The rise and fall: how peak expansion gave way to decline, changing mental-health philosophies, and shifting societal attitudes. What remains today: the buildings, the memories, the legacy — and the efforts to preserve or repurpose pieces of its history. Join us on a journey through time, memory, and healing. If you're curious about mental-health history, local heritage, or the echoes of institutions long gone — this podcast is for you. Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. On November 23, 1963—while the nation was consumed by news of President John F. Kennedy's assassination—a devastating fire quietly swept through the Golden Age Nursing Home in Fitchville, Ohio. In this episode, we uncover the overlooked tragedy that was overshadowed by national mourning. In this episode of Vacation Mavens, we are joined by adventure traveler and blogger Sherry Ott of OttsWorld. We dive into what it takes to plan a successful cycling vacation — everything from choosing destinations and tour types, to picking the right gear, training beforehand, and recovering well. Whether you're a biking newbie or looking to level up your next bike‐based trip, this one's packed with insights and practical advice. Sherry Ott is a long-time travel blogger (since 2006) specializing in adventure travel, especially for women. She started leading small group trips in 2018, including unique “cat lady tours” in Japan. Sherry began serious biking during the pandemic, upgrading to gravel bikes and exploring both domestic (U.S.) and international routes (Chile, France, Prince Edward Island). She is passionate about making bike travel accessible, safe, and fun for all skill levels. Episode Highlights Planning & Choosing a Trip Decide between guided and self-guided tours — guided trips offer support and community, while self-guided give you more flexibility. Research destinations with strong bike infrastructure (trail networks, signage, support). Check elevation, distance, and trail type (paved vs. gravel) to match your comfort level. Look for tour companies that provide e-bike options if you want extra support. Read reviews, ask about group size, and confirm whether you can bring your own gear (seat, mirror, pedals). Training & Fitness Prep Start riding regularly at home to build saddle time and comfort. Practice on terrain similar to your trip (gravel, hills, road). Work on balance, confidence, and endurance. Don't underestimate elevation — even moderate climbs can feel tough over multiple days. Safety & Comfort Gear Always bring your own helmet for the best fit and safety. Pack a rear-view mirror (handlebar or helmet mount) for traffic awareness. Wear bright, high-visibility clothing so drivers and riders can see you. Bring rain gear and layers — weather can shift quickly. Prioritize comfort over style on the bike. Recovery & Wellbeing Use compression socks or leggings (e.g. Vim & Vigor) to reduce muscle fatigue. Hydrate often and refuel with snacks during rides. Allow time for rest and stretching after long days. Be mindful of long flights post-trip — keep circulation flowing with compression wear and movement. Helpful Resources Adventure Cycling Association – maps, routes, and trip planning tools.
