Solo Travel Adventures: Safe Travel for Women, Preparing for a Trip, Overcoming Fear, Travel Tips
Wondering if group travel might be your next adventure? Join me as I chat with Avery Hale-Smith, Chief Experience Officer at Backroads, who shares how guided active adventures are transforming the way people experience destinations worldwide.Avery reveals how her own childhood travels—from immersive village experiences in Ecuador to studying abroad in India—shaped her perspective on what makes travel truly meaningful. These formative journeys ultimately led her back to Backroads, where she now works alongside her father (the founder) to create exceptional active travel experiences focused on cultural connection and personal growth. We dive deep into the remarkable surge in women's adventure travel, with Backroads seeing triple-digit growth in their women-specific trips. Avery explains this phenomenon: "Women tend to spend much of their lives doing things for others. Now they're waking up and feeling like 'why wait?' The time is now to choose me." This shift has created a boom in journeys with spiritual elements, like the Camino de Santiago, where women find both connection and personal transformation. The conversation takes unexpected turns when Avery describes their unique active safaris in Africa—where guests actually bike through game reserves alongside giraffes—and their adventures spanning from Antarctica to the Azores. For solo travelers (my specialty!), there's exciting news about upcoming reduced single supplements to make these experiences more accessible.Perhaps most valuable are Avery's insights for women venturing out alone: "Start small, follow your intuition, and remember you're capable of more than you think." Whether you're considering your first solo journey or looking to join a group adventure, this episode illuminates how stepping beyond your comfort zone—with the right support—can create life's most enriching experiences.Ready to discover how active travel might transform your next adventure? This conversation will inspire you to explore the world in ways you never imagined possible.https://www.backroads.comhttps://www.instagram.com/backroadstravel/Support the showhttps://www.cherylbeckesch.com hello@cherylbeckesch.com Instagram @solotraveladventures50Facebook community: Solo Travel for Women Over 50 https://www.facebook.com/groups/860865768609200

In this episode of Vacation Mavens, we are joined by adventure traveler and blogger Sherry Ott of OttsWorld. We dive into what it takes to plan a successful cycling vacation — everything from choosing destinations and tour types, to picking the right gear, training beforehand, and recovering well. Whether you're a biking newbie or looking to level up your next bike‐based trip, this one's packed with insights and practical advice. Sherry Ott is a long-time travel blogger (since 2006) specializing in adventure travel, especially for women. She started leading small group trips in 2018, including unique “cat lady tours” in Japan. Sherry began serious biking during the pandemic, upgrading to gravel bikes and exploring both domestic (U.S.) and international routes (Chile, France, Prince Edward Island). She is passionate about making bike travel accessible, safe, and fun for all skill levels. Episode Highlights Planning & Choosing a Trip Decide between guided and self-guided tours — guided trips offer support and community, while self-guided give you more flexibility. Research destinations with strong bike infrastructure (trail networks, signage, support). Check elevation, distance, and trail type (paved vs. gravel) to match your comfort level. Look for tour companies that provide e-bike options if you want extra support. Read reviews, ask about group size, and confirm whether you can bring your own gear (seat, mirror, pedals). Training & Fitness Prep Start riding regularly at home to build saddle time and comfort. Practice on terrain similar to your trip (gravel, hills, road). Work on balance, confidence, and endurance. Don't underestimate elevation — even moderate climbs can feel tough over multiple days. Safety & Comfort Gear Always bring your own helmet for the best fit and safety. Pack a rear-view mirror (handlebar or helmet mount) for traffic awareness. Wear bright, high-visibility clothing so drivers and riders can see you. Bring rain gear and layers — weather can shift quickly. Prioritize comfort over style on the bike. Recovery & Wellbeing Use compression socks or leggings (e.g. Vim & Vigor) to reduce muscle fatigue. Hydrate often and refuel with snacks during rides. Allow time for rest and stretching after long days. Be mindful of long flights post-trip — keep circulation flowing with compression wear and movement. Helpful Resources Adventure Cycling Association – maps, routes, and trip planning tools. Tour operators like Experience Plus, Biketours.com, and Backroads. Tourism boards for bike-friendly regions with trail networks and infrastructure.

Next, Heidi Brown describes her mental journey before, during and after a trip, identifying some of the precise reasons that she believes her travels have improved her mental health. Finally, Diane Hartmann describes some of what happened to her on her first trips abroad - all solo - and how these challenges contributed positively to her mental health. Creativity is an important part of my life, and I have so often observed that when I'm travelling, and also on my return, my creative thinking gets a huge boost. In this episode I chat with other travellers who feel the same. First up, I talk to author Spiri Tsintziras. Spiri has written several memoirs related to her experiences and travels in Greece, and explains beautifully how being away from home impacts her creativity so positively. Next, artist Carol McQuaid describes how travelling not only allows her creativity to flourish, but also talks about how travellers who take her visual art workshops while they are travelling have the same experience. Finally, author Diane Hartman tells me about her experiences in Ireland and in particular, about a writing retreat in a beautiful part of County Cork which included all the required ingredients for maximum creativity. I also chatted with friends and colleagues from the Creative Schools program, Claire Davenhall and Joanne Marriott, about how they feel travel and creativity come together, and I've included some of their thoughts. Ever wondered what it would be like to cross America primarily on dirt roads? Andy and Mercedes Lilienthal let us ride shotgun on their extraordinary Transamerica Trail adventure – a jaw-dropping 7,100-mile journey with over 3,100 miles on unpaved terrain, all completed in just 29 days. The couple's modified 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness proved remarkably capable, conquering elevations approaching 13,000 feet in Colorado and withstanding temperatures ranging from freezing to a sweltering 111°F in Moab. Their detailed walkthrough of the vehicle's modifications reveals the thoughtful preparation behind such an ambitious journey – from the Thule rooftop tent and ARB awning to the critical Primitive Racing skid plates that protected vital components on rough terrain. What makes their story particularly compelling isn't just the vehicle specs or challenging routes – it's how this journey provided them a completely different perspective on America. Despite both having previously visited all 50 states, experiencing the country from rural backroads allowed them to discover unfamiliar wildlife, connect with locals in remote areas, and witness aspects of American life rarely seen from interstate highways. Perhaps most fittingly, they completed this epic adventure on their 21st wedding anniversary, proving their relationship is as durable as their remarkably capable Subaru. We also feature Don Armstrong's comprehensive review of the 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV, a sleek electric SUV with limousine-like comfort and impressive 615 horsepower performance. Don highlights its sharp exterior design, user-friendly 17-inch infotainment system, and competitive positioning in the premium electric SUV market at $44,600 for base models with the high-performance SS trim testing at $64,180.Subscribe to In Wheel Time for more fascinating automotive adventures, detailed vehicle reviews, and conversations with passionate car enthusiasts who push the boundaries of what's possible on four wheels.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. In tonight's episode we explore 3 Ohio roadside attractions with Backroads flair. When Ohio was still considered the countries frontier, legendary Wyandot leader "Leatherlips" helped broker peace deals with the European settlers. This didnt sit well with his fellow tribesman and would ultimately cost him his life. A striking monument stands today in his memory, evocative of the legendary "Sitting Bull" monument. Overlooking the Scioto Rive in Dublin, Ohio, this limestone monument stands today as a tribute to the legendary warrior chief. Traveling West, is the infamous "Blue Hole" of Castalia. Once rumored to have no bottom, this crystal clear pool dumps millions of gallons into the Sandusky Bay each day. Once attracting over 165,00 people each year, this location was closed in 1990 and is in private hands today. However, similar type pools are located close by that you can visit. You can even win a chance to be one of the lucky few to have a chance to visit the original park. Finally, did you know that Ohio had an amusement park that is only open 4 days a year? It has 2 roller coasters many smaller rides and games. Built by the Stricker family, you can attend (on one of the 4 days, you will have to listen to find out which 4). On the cold dark morning of January 10, 1954, in a lonely rail yard a railroad work would observe a mysterious figure of a man, slipping away into the darkness of night, slinking away from the tracks. Almost immediately, the railroad worker would observe the corpse of a woman, having experienced severe trauma and very much dead despite a lack of blood at the scene.
