S3, June 22nd, 2024 Summer time is here in the Carolina Outdoors.  That means that summer time produce.  Host of the Carolina Outdoors, Bill Bartee speaks with Bush N Vine Farm's, Sam Hall about corn, peaches, watermelon, & okra, & more.  Plus the conversation edges towards the popularity of pick-your-own & how to best tackle perishables during the heat of the summer..Show Highlights: Freestone Peaches fall away from the pit & are sweet eating Blackberries and Blueberries are now ripe & available for pick-your-own with the whole family Hall recommends freezing your picks to keep them ready to eat Cantelopes & Watermelons are also ready The Carolina Outdoors features an ideal environment for growing a wide variety of fresh produce during the summer. Here are some popular summer crops grown in the South & much of it is grown at the Bush N Vine Farm. Tomatoes: A staple in Southern gardens, tomatoes thrive in the heat and can be used in salads, sauces, and sandwiches. Peppers: Both sweet and hot peppers do well in the Southern summer heat. Okra: A classic Southern vegetable, okra grows well in hot, humid conditions. Squash: Both summer squash (like zucchini) and winter squash (like butternut) can be grown during the summer months. Cucumbers: These are great for fresh eating, pickling, and adding to salads. Eggplant: Another heat-loving plant, eggplants can produce abundantly in Southern gardens. Beans: Green beans, pole beans, and lima beans are all suitable for summer planting. Sweet Corn: This popular summer crop requires a bit of space but grows well in the warm Southern climate. Melons: Watermelons, cantaloupes, and honeydews thrive in the summer heat. Herbs: Basil, thyme, rosemary, and mint grow well during the summer and can add fresh flavors to dishes. Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries can be harvested during the summer months in the South. These fruits and vegetables benefit from the long growing season and ample sunshine in the Southern states, making them fresh and flavorful additions to any summer meal. Having recently played Shelley in I Should Be So Lucky (UK & Ireland Tour), Melissa Jacques is currently preparing to perform a very special solo show, Songs My Father Told Me I Should Sing. Taking place at the Phoenix Arts Club on Monday 8th July, Melissa will share songs from some of the inspirational artists her dad introduced her to as a kid growing up in Sheffield as well as numbers linked to her career. Melissa has co-written the show with Jamie Alexander Wilson who is also directing whilst musical direction and arrangements are by Sam Hall. Melissa's regional theatre credits include: Little Shop of Horrors, Me and My Girl, Spend Spend Spend, Crazy For You, Oliver!, Company, Into The Woods and many more. Melissa understudied Donna, Rosie and Tanya in the original West End cast of Mamma Mia! In 1999. She had a total of three stints in the show and later became the alternate Donna. Some of Melissa's other theatre credits include understudying Madame Morrible in Wicked (Apollo Victoria Theatre), playing Trish in Kinky Boots (Adelphi Theatre) and starring as Carol's Mum in the semi-staged performances of 42 Balloons (Vaudeville Theatre). Melissa joined the West End production of Everybody's Talking About Jamie (Apollo Theatre) as the standby for Margaret, Ray and Miss Hedge in 2018. The following year Melissa took over as Margaret to tremendous acclaim and stayed with the production until it closed in 2021. Melissa later reprised her performance when the musical had its US premiere in LA in 2022. Melissa's screen credits include Doctors, Disenchanted and the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked. In this episode Melissa discusses juggling being a mum with being on tour, her life changing audition for Everybody's Talking About Jamie and the influences behind her new solo show, plus lots more! Sam Hall's family has deep roots in York County Agriculture. His farm has been in their family for over 150 years and Bush-N-Vine Farm has been a staple of the community since 1979 when his father opened their first market at the farm. Since then, they've grown into multiple farm stands across the county, and attracted folks to their farm with their Farm Cafe, CSA, U-PICK, and other agritourism opportunities. "Happens to all of us y'know... being born." Between 1970 and 1975 Peter Sellers made films which mostly fell flat commercially, and some of which didn't even get released, but there was the odd little gem and The Optimists of Nine Elms, directed by Anthony Simmons and based on his novel, is perhaps one of Sellers' most personal films. The task of embodying Sam, a washed-up old music hall entertainer, prompted Sellers to channel both his father and his great hero Dan Leno and look back to his youth, trailing around theatre after theatre with his parents, soaking up the patter and the hoary old routines, the songs and the stagecraft. Joining Tyler this week is writer and presenter Bob Fischer to talk about the film, released exactly 50 years ago. It centres around Sam, who is reluctantly befriended by two children seeking a distraction from boredom. With their parents both too busy working to give the children much in the way of attention, by contrast Sam has all the time in the world to keep the children occupied and entertained in his own slightly irascible fashion. The three, along with Sam's beloved dog Bella, form such an unusual bond that occasionally you are left wondering who are the children and who is the adult. Shot through with some great songs and a terrific score by George Martin, plus really great performances by the young actors and Sellers, not to mention the ever reliable and slightly shifty David Daker, The Optimists of Nine Elms is well worth a watch - a sweetly melancholy tip of the hat to an entertainment tradition that had all but passed from memory, as well as showing the last knockings of London's slum culture and the general post-war malaise.
