For Kevin Sweeney (author, speaker, spiritual director), Christian faith is all about experiencing God, not in having abstract beliefs about God. And the experiences that have kept him a Christian, even after his first dogmatic teachings about the Bible fell by the wayside, have been at the intersection of the great, transcendent, mystical Cosmic Christ, and the real, authentic, liberating, earthly Concrete Jesus. Kevin talks with us about fading back from a front-and-center role as a pastor to being a servant and part of the whole body of Christ, as a writer and hospice chaplain helping people transition into their next phase. And he also talks with us about how tangible, boots-on-the ground liberation theology—particularly Black theology taught by James Cone, Kelly Brown Douglas, and others—has kept him grounded in the understanding that love is real, love is now, and love is active in this world. Jesus isn't here just to save our individual souls, he tells us. Without liberation, there is no Jesus. Listen for this great perspective on how the cosmic vision and real world works of faith can be reconciled into a single cohesive Christian faith. Kevin is the author of the new book, “Cosmic Christ and Cosmic Jesus,” which is available for pre-order and will be released in May 2025. He is also the author of the previous books “The Making of a Mystic: My Journey With Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay for Everyone to Relax” and “The Joy of Letting Go: How One Thing Has the Power to Change Everything.” He is also the host of “The Church Needs Therapy” podcast, and co-founder of Imagine Church in Honolulu. Episode 114 of The Church Needs Therapy is up! This week is a great conversation with Keith Giles. In this conversation we talk about the wisdom and quantum dimensions of the non-canonical book, The Gospel of Thomas.
For the month of May, we'll be discussing all things mental health related. Although the stigma of mental illness is dwindling some, there is still work to be done. For those who suffer, you are not alone. Our prayer is that you find comfort by hearing these stories and discussions, even if it's just a little bit. For those who do not struggle, our prayer is that through these episodes, you will have more understanding; and this would lead you to more compassion and grace for all who do. Episode 2: Where does mental health fit, in the context of faith and spirituality? Does the church place enough value on professional therapy? Are expectations for pastors reasonable and healthy? Why does the church often prefer simplicity and formulas over an acknowledgement and appreciation of human complexity? Amie Patrick shares what she's learned in her life experiences, including the loss of her husband to suicide three years ago. Elizabeth Gillespie, a licensed therapist, describes where "mental disorders" fit in the context of general "mental health" and shares new research on suicide and what ACEs is. She also gives her take on some short-sightedness in how people of faith view mental health. At the top of the episode, Lynne Stroy, Roy Jacques and Joey Svendsen discuss medication and what motivated Joey to ween himself off of it, leading to his mental health crisis in 2019 [this story told in Episode 1 of this months mental health series]. Kevin Sweeney joins us to talk about his provocative new book: "The Making of a Mystic: My Journey with Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay For Everyone to Relax". Can psilocybin (AKA Magic mushrooms) lead someone to Christ? The answer is yes and Kevin tells us all about it. Dig in and let us know what you think. About the book: “There is an increasing interest in the mystics, contemplative faith, and what this feels like in real life. We have teachers who can explain the path and help us understand, but we need guides who have experienced the path, and who can show us how it unfolds. This is what the making of a mystic is about. While everyone is talking about deconstruction, their faith falling apart, and the dark night of the soul, this book is written from the place of joy, freedom, and light on the other side.” About Kevin: He is the host of the podcast “The Church Needs Therapy” and is the author of the forthcoming books, “The Making of a Mystic: My Journey with Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay For Everyone to Relax,” out on May 31st, and “The Joy of Letting Go” which will be out in January 2023. In the 1960's, Jesuit priest Karl Rahner made a bold claim about the future of faith. "The Christian of the future will either be a mystic, or nothing at all." Who could have guessed that sixty years later the deconstruction community would turn his statement into reality through the modern pursuit of mysticism. Apologetic, rational, belief-based Christianity can only get you so far. In fact, in many ways it's gotten us into the mess we are in today. It could very well be true that the most necessary step you make during your deconstruction journey is to move from thinking the 'right' things about God to knowing God through intimate experiences. Modern mystic Thomas Keating describes this process as going inside yourself to find what is true. It is a way of knowing that begins with unknowing, a way of understanding that involves not just your mind, but your whole self. In this, our 50th episode, we talk with author and mystic Kevin Sweeney about his path out of rational, apologetic faith and into the ancient tradition of Christian mysticism. Through formative practices like meditation, mindfulness, and centering prayer, Kevin charts a path for many of us to follow as we take the necessary step out of evangelicalism into a more freer, experiential faith. Father Richard Rohr describes a mystic as someone who has moved from mere belief to actual inner experience with God. This introductory conversation about Christian mysticism invites all of us into a deeper stream of spirituality. Plus, we discuss the formative practices you will need to facilitate inner transformation, a transformation from someone who thinks about God to someone who finds their entire being already in God. BioMystics are not just a thing of the past. We all can embrace the mystery of God and the way of Christ in the world today. Kevin Sweeney, a pastor in Honolulu with his wife Christine, is here to share his journey within mysticism.
