With a new year on the horizon, Catherine is looking forward to so many things – the continued efforts in Health Human Resources, advancing the work in the main areas of Risk, the future of Collaborative Benefits, and so much more. “My optimism is around people that surprise me every day. When I think you can't help but be defeated, human spirit and strength comes forward every time”, says Catherine when explaining her positive outlook for 2024. In this episode, Catherine gives us a glimpse into the mind of a CEO, including her zest for learning new things and how she recharges and stays inspired through even the most difficult of times. Before we let her go, a surprise guest joins us to chat and gives us a sneak peak into what family time looks like for Catherine! Quotables: “There are these juxtapositions of so much that is going on, yet there's reason for hope because the bedrock of what we provide in our healthcare system and the people that provide it is so very strong.” - CG “I'm continually impressed by the people I work with everyday and the people that we have the true pleasure of serving in the healthcare system who are doing the work that is fundamental to the lives of so many citizens of this country.” - CG “We have a population of employees who know that when they provide feedback, they will have a response and I think that's phenomenal.” - CG “Our strength will always be that we have brilliant and caring people who are willing to spend time with us so we learn what they're doing, and we can take that knowledge and put it into forms that are used more generally.” - CG “Lately I've been focused on how there are women who are coming into leadership, how they historically have not been facilitated to have a voice, and now are so strong in our system.” - CG “If you're feeling like you're not accomplishing what you need to or want to, or you're making no progress at all, give yourself the 5 minutes to walk around the block and compare where your life is today with how it was 6 months ago, and you'll be inevitably inspired by that.” - CG “Of course there are really hard times, and we're all at times feeling defeated, but the people I interact with, the people that provide care in our system, the people at HIROC, there's huge optimism on all those fronts.” - CG Mentioned in this Episode: TOH's Innovation Framework Ontario Hospital Association HIROC Safety Grants Program Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your favourite podcasts. This week on the SALTovation podcast we speak with Brad Scott, Director of Finance at Halstead Bead, Inc., an eCommerce wholesaler supplying jewelry businesses worldwide. Brad discusses the challenges and costs of sales tax compliance for small businesses. He shares his personal experience with the Wayfair decision and the impact it had on his company. He talks about the need for greater simplicity in tax policy to drive compliance and reduce the burden on small businesses. He proposes solutions such as a single audit per year from a designated taxing authority and a single rate model for states. Listen this week as we discuss the need for collaboration between business leaders and policy leaders to find effective solutions. Talking Tax Reform: https://taxfoundation.org/event/post-wayfair-remote-sales-tax-reforms/Guest Bio:Brad Scott is the Director of Finance at Halstead Bead, Inc., an eCommerce wholesaler supplying jewelry businesses worldwide. Halstead is a second-generation, family-owned, small business. Scott has been with Halstead for 21 years. He handles multi-state sales and income tax registrations, filings, reconciliations, and all other accounting for the business. Scott also leads Halstead's legislative advocacy efforts to achieve multi-state sales tax policy uniformity & simplification and is the Chairman of the Committee on Tax Policy at the American Catalog Mailers Association (ACMA). Halstead Bead, Inc. was the plaintiff in a lawsuit against the State of Louisiana, represented by Joe Bishop-Henchman and Tyler Martinez of the National Taxpayers Union (NTUF). Scott graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Finance.Topics discussed in this episode:Sales tax compliance is a significant challenge for small businesses, requiring extensive time and resources.Simplifying tax policies and reducing the number of audits can drive greater compliance and reduce costs for businesses. The single rate model, as implemented in Texas, can significantly streamline sales tax collection and administration.Collaboration between business leaders and policy leaders is crucial to finding effective solutions for sales tax compliance.Quotables“There is an equal lack of awareness on the part of policymakers about what goes on within a small business, the challenges that we face, and what kind of resource drain they present. That has been the key focal point of our advocacy, bringing to bear the actual resource that we have to put into this and helping legislators to understand what a reasonable expectation is so that we can comply but also serve our customer base.” -Brad Scott [04:40]“If you start thinking about the sheer volume of businesses that are out there, I question how any state Department of Revenue could reach out to all of the businesses in every single state outside of their territory. It's just not a fair ask. So when you start talking about the sheer volume of communication that's not occurred, how many businesses are unaware of the Wayfair decision?” -Brad Scott [11:39]ConnectSubscribe on your favorite podcast app here.Follow us on LinkedIn and YouTube.Talk to a Tax Advocate Today!
In the “The Unspoken Stressors of Being a Stepparent” episode, children's book author, Jennie Guay, helps us break down the complexities of being a step-parent. Being intentional about creating healthy spaces as a step-parent is the basis of the relationship. Every parent and step-parent has their unique set of parenting tactics; however, all tactics must benefit and protect the child. Having open discussions on the role you'll play and the dynamic of each parent is vitally important to the continued success of any step parent journey. Not only is communication important for all adults involved, but it is essential to create a space for the child to communicate their feelings. Learning how to manage your frustrations connected to parenting starts with healthy communication. It's imperative to understand if you have trouble managing your own emotions, you will struggle as a stepparent. You will need to find ways and tools to manage your stress on a daily basis. SPONSORED BY: Dating Well AF Course, visit to learn more: http://datingwellaf.com KEY POINTS: Identify the parenting methods that are not acceptable for your family unit, agree on those as a unit, and consistently reinforce those with your child(ren). You cannot tell children what to think, but you can teach them how to think. If you have trouble managing your own emotions, you will struggle as a stepparent. You will need to find ways and tools to manage your stress on a daily basis. Knowing how to teach your child instead of telling them what to do will benefit them most in the future. QUOTABLES: “There is no right way to parent, but there is a wrong way.” “It is important to allow children to have choices and avenues to communicate their feelings.” “You cannot tell children what to think, but you can teach them how to think.” “Sometimes our own coping mechanisms can work against the connection with our children.” “It can be challenging to be a better person for a child you may not have had otherwise.” CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST: Jennie Guay LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/jennie-guay-77720219 “Howie Blend - Playdate Adventures with Family & Friends” Book: https://www.amazon.com/Howie-Blend-Playdate-Adventures-Friends-ebook/dp/B099GRSWKM CONNECT WITH YOUR HOSTS: Alechia Reese For coaching visit: http://gotvaluenation.com Instagram | instagram.com/alechiareese LinkedIn | linkedin.com/alechiareese Dani Bourdeau For coaching visit: http://danifostercoaching.com Instagram.com/thedanibourdeau RESOURCES: For more info, visit: http://triggeredafpodcast.com Like what you're hearing? Why authority-based businesses require being unproductive at times—and how to give yourself permission to go there. The hidden costs of failing to innovate, especially for soloists. The wide spectrum from productivity to creativity—and deciding where you want to be in any given moment.Pushing through any residual guilt from not being highly productive, all the time. The difference between exploration and expedition—and why exploring (a proxy for creativity) may be challenging for experts.Quotables“There are things that you probably need to do for an authority-based business…that require you to be unproductive.”—JS“Creativity is like being delightfully unproductive.”—RM “There's no stopwatch to be like, okay, like how fast did you come up with an idea today?”—JS “You may have this sort of mindset that you need to always be busy. And sometimes that just has to be broken.”—RM“The question immediately comes up like, how do you schedule projects back to back if you're not sure when they're done? And I'm like, why are you scheduling projects back-to-back at all?”—JS“You just have to find a way to shift back and forth between those times where you're really busy and it's relatively quiet.”—RM “There's a thing that I do that looks like I'm doing nothing from the outside. And if you just recognize that that's part of the process, like without that, you're not gonna innovate.”—JS“People resist it (allowing an idea to roll around before it gels) like I can't even tell you because there's so much discomfort in sitting in the not knowing.”—RM

In this episode of the SALTovation podcast, Meredith Smith, and Tram Le talk with Dan DeLau, a founding partner of TaxOps, and Professor at the School of Business at Colorado Christian University, with decades of domestic and international experience in accounting. DeLau and the team discuss why the number of students enrolling in accounting is down, what that means for businesses, and the future of the accounting profession. They also talk about how globalization has created complexities in accounting and tax laws, and the additional requirements it places on smaller organizations. Topics discussed in this episode: How globalization and the internet have changed tax laws The decline in accounting enrollment over the past 30 years Present-day hurdles to excelling in accounting and tax law What You Will Learn: [01:44] Daniel DeLau on globalization [07:35] Complexities in the accounting profession [13:10] State-by-state requirements for obtaining an accounting degree Quotables: “There are a majority of reasons we have seen a decline in the profession over the last twenty to thirty years. One of them is if you look at the traits of a good accountant they have good time management skills, pay attention to detail, and have good organizational skills. Those are the same traits that are important for someone who wants to focus in computer information systems.” - Daniel DeLau [09:13] “In finance and data analytics students don't need that extra year of education. In Texas, we require one hundred and fifty hours, but in most states candidates need one hundred and twenty hours to sit and take the accounting exam. It is another big hurdle.” - Tram Le [12:38] “I have to put on my sales hat and entice students to pull the trigger on an accounting major today. I talk to them about the benefits associated with the profession but many of them ultimately have those critical thinking skills you need and they just get it. It is like a puzzle to them and they enjoy solving it.” - Daniel DeLau [14:19] “I think when you are younger people talk about different careers. But in terms of becoming an accountant, I feel I was recruited by my advisor in undergrad who was an accounting professor. He encouraged me to take this path and I'm not sure I would be in this field if it wasn't for career mentorship.” - Tram Le [15:48]

In the second episode of a two-part series, we continue our conversation with Paul Williams, Senior Tax Correspondent at Law 360, and our own Judy Vorndran. Paul discusses boomerang issues, which are when old concepts get new life in the court system, and trending issues across the nation. Topics discussed in this episode: Halstead Bead's case in Louisiana and other cases related to home rule cities Wayfair's lawsuit against Lakewood for a $600K sales tax bill What You Will Learn: [00:26] Halstead Bead's case in Louisiana and home rule jurisdictions [07:27] Wayfair's lawsuit against Lakewood [11:02] Trends from a litigation perspective Quotables: “There's a push and pull there is to how much power the local governments wanted to retain for the local tax collection versus what the sponsors thought that the state may need to do is what some would argue to comply with Wayfair.” - Paul Williams [02:53] “It's very interesting how we've given this authority to the locals, which I appreciate why they need it. I appreciate why our states need authority, because the federal government doesn't give them enough money, but it does create a lot of complexity in tax compliance.” - Judy Vorndran [06:04] “When you look at both Wayfair's case now and the Halstead Bead case, it does bring up the question of to what extent, if any, do home rule jurisdictions… what are limitations to their authorities potentially or what burdens can varying local rules create for companies that just want to comply with the Wayfair decision?” - Paul Williams [07:34] “Since Wayfair came down, and different practitioners we've talked to and different tax conferences we've reported on, practitioners have raised the question as to whether or not Wayfair gave local governments the authority to also impose economic nexus for sales and use tax.” - Paul Williams [08:17] Relevant Links: Paul Williams on Law360: law360.com/tax-authority/search?q=reporter:%22Paul+Williams%22 Paul Williams on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/paul-williams-56183567

When it comes to sex, “the wait” can be a daunting and exciting time. And with the outdated adage of waiting until marriage no longer the standard for many of us, the real question now is how long do we wait, and especially when it comes to someone we want to pursue? Would you buy a car without driving it? Do you live every day as if it could be your last? Or do you believe in the beauty of delayed gratification? Tune in as your Triggered AF hosts get raw about sex and share their “been there, done that” two cents on the waiting game. KEY POINTS: - If we aren't waiting for marriage, how long are we waiting? - Do you have p*ssy discipline or are you “dickmatized”? - Is sex truly meaningless? - Why freedom and discipline can go hand in hand - Energetic transfers and cleansing - what does it mean to you? Whole life? Universal? Infinite banking? Wealth accelerator? Why do insurance policies have all these different names and what makes them different from one another? At this point, I'm pretty sure you've already heard tons of different names from financial advisors and insurance companies that try to sell you life insurance in different ways. In this episode, I'm going to help you better understand why insurance policies have different names and what you really need to pay attention to. Key Talking Points of the Episode [01:26] Invest with PreREO! [02:18] Why do life insurance policies have different names? [03:38] Term Insurance [06:58] Infinite Banking Insurance [08:02] Types of Life Insurance [09:04] Why do companies give life insurance different names? [10:21] What do you need to understand when it comes to insurance? [11:42] When do you use which insurance for which situation? [17:34] What is the Wealth Accelerator they're talking about? [20:55] What if you don't have enough net worth yet? Quotables “There are so many stupid names for life insurance and I think it's primarily for two reasons. One, of course, a company wants to differentiate themselves but two, they're just trying to mask their insecurities about using what ultimately is life insurance.” “There are so many “banking” things out there, but they're all pretty much referencing infinite banking.” “They'll give you all these cute names, but ultimately, when you hear most of the names out there, it's usually referencing something like whole life insurance.” “It's never anything new under the sun, they're just trying to make it sound special.”
Today we're talking with Kathryn Nichol, who is President and CEO of VHA Home HealthCare. She stepped into the role in early 2021 after several years at VHA working as Vice President Quality, Best Practice, Research and Education. Our aging population, movement towards a community-based model of care, and the pandemic have put the spotlight on homecare like never before. For Kathryn, this has reinforced homecare's crucial role in facilitating the flow of people out of hospital so they can return to their homes where they want to be. Her initial desire was to go to medical school but when that proved too expensive, she happily went to nursing school and worked as a frontline nurse for several years before discovering her passionate interest in research. Having a clinical background in a leadership position Kathryn says is valuable – not just for her but for all healthcare leaders – because it enables them to lead from a place of compassion. Quotables “There is a ton of pride because homecare never stopped for a moment.” - KN “There was a realization that homecare is a very safe way to provide care in a pandemic. It's much safer than providing care in an institution where there's many more people involved, and you have to be closer together.” – KN “If we don't have people who want to work in our sector and who are compensated at an equal level, they're going to leave.” – KN “The capacity issue is more acute than it ever has been before.” – KN “If I had superpowers, homecare would be recognized as a clinical specialty and our workers recognized as clinical specialists because it takes a very unique set of skills to be able to operate in this kind of environment.” – KN “Those people who were self-deployed for a month into LTC, that is the most remarkable example of courageous leadership I can share with you.” – KN “Homecare is significantly understudied yet it's an incredibly important part of our healthcare system.” – KN “Health system leaders with some kind of clinical background is more important than ever before because you're leading from a place of compassion in a field that is people-based.” - KN “When you find yourself at the top of ‘S curve', it's time to disrupt yourself. You have to jump to your next curve.” - KN Mentioned in this Episode: VHA Home Healthcare Dr. Samir Sinha Disrupt Yourself by Whitney Johnson Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. In the 1960's, Jesuit priest Karl Rahner made a bold claim about the future of faith. "The Christian of the future will either be a mystic, or nothing at all." Who could have guessed that sixty years later the deconstruction community would turn his statement into reality through the modern pursuit of mysticism. Apologetic, rational, belief-based Christianity can only get you so far. In fact, in many ways it's gotten us into the mess we are in today. It could very well be true that the most necessary step you make during your deconstruction journey is to move from thinking the 'right' things about God to knowing God through intimate experiences. Modern mystic Thomas Keating describes this process as going inside yourself to find what is true. It is a way of knowing that begins with unknowing, a way of understanding that involves not just your mind, but your whole self. In this, our 50th episode, we talk with author and mystic Kevin Sweeney about his path out of rational, apologetic faith and into the ancient tradition of Christian mysticism. Through formative practices like meditation, mindfulness, and centering prayer, Kevin charts a path for many of us to follow as we take the necessary step out of evangelicalism into a more freer, experiential faith. Father Richard Rohr describes a mystic as someone who has moved from mere belief to actual inner experience with God. This introductory conversation about Christian mysticism invites all of us into a deeper stream of spirituality. Plus, we discuss the formative practices you will need to facilitate inner transformation, a transformation from someone who thinks about God to someone who finds their entire being already in God. BioMystics are not just a thing of the past. We all can embrace the mystery of God and the way of Christ in the world today. Kevin Sweeney, a pastor in Honolulu with his wife Christine, is here to share his journey within mysticism. He shares his journey of releasing ego, surrendering into God's love, and embracing the wild journey life truly is. Kevin also shares about his new, forthcoming book, “The Making of a Mystic: My Journey with Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay For Everyone to Relax,” which comes out on May 31st.Kevin Sweeney is co-founder and lead pastor of Imagine Church—an urban church in Honolulu that is welcoming of all people, sees imagination as the key to the future, chooses authenticity over performance, substance over hype, and quality over quantity. He is the host of podcast “The Church Needs Therapy” and is the author of the forthcoming books, “The Making of a Mystic: My Journey with Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay For Everyone to Relax,” out on May 31st, and “The Joy of Letting Go” which will be out in January 2023. Both on Quoir Publishing. He lives In Honolulu with his wife and co-founder of Imagine, Christine, and their two kids, True and Mikayla.Quotables“There is a difference between spiritual intelligence and spiritual experience.”“Spiritual intelligence is what you believe about God, but spiritual experience is direct, first-person experience of God.”“Spiritual experience is the connection and the union with God.”“Spiritual experience is about waking up…For me a transformative faith is not primarily about believing what is right it is about tasting what is good.”“You can be less certain and more free.”If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a rating and a review

Join Cecilia, Scott, and me as we start off our day, waking up in a spooky spot. Then we continue adventuring outdoors via boating the Potomac and geocaching. All while also appreciating old architecture, waterfront parks, art installations, Cherry Blossoms, and all of the best eating and drinking Alexandria has to offer along the way. About Cecilia and Scott Fix Scott and Cecilia are a travel blogging married couple who travel both locally and internationally. They have an insatiable desire for outdoor adventure, not necessarily just in the adrenaline junkie sense of the word, but for anything exciting and new. Cecilia has a background in humanitarian work, a Master's degree in International Development, and has served as a Peace Corps volunteer for 2 years in Cape Verde, giving her a keen interest in human relationships and connectedness. Scott has a background in physics and math. His love for travel is driven more by an intense curiosity to discover the history and theories of why things are the way they are. Together Scott and Cecilia have climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, scuba-dived in the Philippines, safari'd in Tanzania, and slept in a yurt in the mountains of West Virginia. But it's their love for "micro-adventure" that has led them to many of their new favorite experiences, including geocaching, camping in their backyard, sleeping in treehouses, and exploring haunted and abandoned locations. Learn more about Cecilia and Scott Fix at lovicarious.com or on Instagram. What We Cover in This Episode What makes Alexandria worth a visit for both outdoor explorers and history buffs. Where the locals eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and go out for drinks in Alexandria. The best ways to spend a day on the Potomac River, including an option sure to be appreciated by your dog! A location that is sure to be an art lover's delight. A few beautiful parks and spots along the waterfront that should be visited. Why geocaching is worth your time in Alexandria, and how to do it! Which local tours are the best, which are overrated, and a way to get a tour of the town for free! The best spots in Alexandria for Instagram photos. Quotables There are very few places in the U.S. that you can go to that genuinely feel old, that you can look around and there's unique architecture. There's something unique about the town. I think a lot of places in the U.S. either tend to look the same or look very modern. Alexandra is someplace that definitely looks historical and it's that way, because it genuinely is. So that history mixed with little bits of Modern cuisine, modern culture, with live performances, and pop up boutiques, it's a nice mixture of old and new. On This Episode The episode opens with Dawn Prall and Audivita Studios founder, and MyMacDLife production partner, David Wolf. They discuss the relationship between Audivita Studios and MyMacDLife as well as exchange views on the rise and importance of audio production and consumption. David shares his journey in the creative field; his love of audio shines throughout, specifically creating visual experiences in the mind of the listener. They then introduce the speakers for the next segment. Voiceover actors Kim Monti and Steve Corona join the conversation and explain audiobook narration. They begin by providing a brief background on their paths to voice acting and answer questions about the challenges, techniques, and physicality of their work. Kim then tells a story about the freedom and independence audiobooks offer to those with vision loss. Audiobooks allow you to listen on your own time, removing the need for someone to read to you. There is a vast range of audiobooks; you can explore almost any subject in the world. The conversation continues as Kim and Steve share their experiences with character development and how they keep multiple character personalities organized while recording. The interview transitions to David, Dawn, Kim, and Steve verbalizing the importance of stories and the innate nature of storytelling. This entertaining conversation concludes with lightening round questions for Kim and Steve. The episode finishes with Bill Kilroy, Vispero's Senior Sales Director for the Northeast and Mike Woods, Strategic Accounts Manager for Education, discussing the DaVinci Pro, a larger desktop unit by Enhanced Vision. This high-performance desktop video magnifier has a 3-in-1 high definition 1080p camera, ensuring a crisp, clean, high quality image on the 24-inch monitor. This device has two levels, the DaVinci HD and the DaVinci HD Pro. While both have OCR functions, the functional difference lies in the OCR capability. You can go online www.enchanedvision.com to see videos on the device and learn more about the product. What We Discuss in this Episode This tenth episode covers the following featured topics: We're freeing people from screens, pages, anything visual. We're giving them a choice in how they consume content, for the sighted population. But for those that are visually impaired, or can't read it all, audiobooks are amazing in that they're an inclusive medium. (10:59) There needs to be vocal separation, you need to be able to tell the characters apart. So that's everything from gender to accent, pitch, pacing, tone, all of it. We spent a lot of time going through and developing the characters. There's also the more daunting part, for me anyway, is putting the list together of all the words that we need to make sure we're saying correctly. (18:50) I just always try to make every story that I tell, every book that I voice, be so vividly expressed through my voice that you can see it anyway in your mind's eye, whether you have vision or not. You should be able to, if you have good vision, and you close your eyes, you should be able to see that picture just as vividly. I always aim to bring that mentally visual picture telling, with my narration. I go very deep in my in my visualization, Kim knows this. I'll do exercises where I close my eyes, and I become these characters. I can see and feel and smell and taste and hear everything that's going on in their world before I jump into it. Then I start narrating, and I'm there. So hopefully I can pull you in with me. That's always my goal. (35:40) I don't know if people understand how deep storytelling goes. Storytelling, vocal storytelling, is the first media of communication. If you ever want a classic example, listen to a two-year-old tell you how they stub their toe or got their booboo. (36:58) If you've got a page of text that you want to have this product scan in, the DaVinci Pro can scan that and then read it out loud to you in multiple voices. You can customize the voices, whether you want male or female, you can change the speed of that, really customizable. When you're magnifying, you've got a 24-inch monitor. It's widescreen 24-inch magnification, which allows you to get up to 77 times magnification, that's pretty high-powered. You can use that to do your magnification, change the color contrasts. You've got 28 different viewing colors, so if you want to use black on white, white on black, you know, yellow, one black, you name it, there's 28 different color combinations that you can use. (49:16) Quotables “There's also, and I've observed this as a producer, there's an intimacy about audio, it's a very primal thing to have stories read to you, it's the first thing your mother did, for example. It's a very primal kind of way to experience story and narrative.” – David Wolf “The thing I like about audiobooks is, whoever you are, you can create what the character looks like. You get the basic description from the author, but you decide how tall the palm trees are. You decide how green the grass is, or if you live out in the southwest, not green the grass is. You paint these pictures.” – Kim Monti “…you were talking about why audiobooks are becoming a huge thing. I think part of it too, is it's sort of harkening back to that golden age of radio…” – Steve Corona “…it's like the theater of the mind because you're visualizing everything that you can't see because it is only audio.” – Steve Corona “They said that it [audiobooks] is so freeing, and they don't feel like they are dumbed down. People sometimes feel, and I had a friend tell me this, that when her eyesight went away, and hers one way very abruptly, there was no gradual it was lights on lights off. She said she felt like she had to stop learning because she didn't know how else to get the information.” – Kim Monti “This is storytelling at its finest, it is that innate. You have a two-year-old that will give you strong storytelling. It was only after storytelling that they start painting pictures on the cave walls. Storytelling came first. This is why it grabs people.” – Kim Monti Recommended Resources - https://audivita.com/ - http://www.supportsight.org/ - http://www.mymacdlife.org/ - https://vispero.com/ - https://www.freedomscientific.com/ - https://www.enhancedvision.com/ - https://www.enhancedvision.com/low-vision-product-line/davinci-pro.html - https://us.optelec.com/ - https://www.healthyvisionassociation.com/ - https://www.novartis.com/ - https://www.centricbank.com/ - https://hinklestein.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mymacdlife-macular-degeneration-podcast/donations

In this episode of the SALTovation podcast, we speak with Ed Sealover, senior reporter for Denver Business Journal (DBJ), Laurel Witt, associate council with Colorado Municipal League (CML), and our very own Judy Vorndran. Ed and Laurel break down the what, why and how of Colorado's Sales and Use Tax System (SUTS) , which is a destination-based tax system as a result of the Wayfair decision. They discuss some of the issues they have seen from participating businesses and jurisdictions. Questions asked and answered in this Episode: How did Ed become aware of the SUTS issues and what is he following now on behalf of the businesses? Do businesses approach the Denver Business Journal as an outlet for their concerns? What is the Colorado Municipal League’s role in general? What does home rule mean? What has CLM heard or done to address the reluctants within the jurisdictions and municipalities they represent? What is Ed hearing from the business community on what they wished they knew more about? Did Laurel see the increase in online buying from the pandemic incentivized governments and jurisdictions to come on board? Is there a safe harbor with the SUTS that doesn’t go back on the business if a vendor messes your address up? What are the top two priorities for CML in 2021? What should we keep in mind or be aware of from a business perspective in relation to this sales tax shift? What You Will Discover: [01:55] How Ed became aware of the issues & what he’s following now [07:33] Colorado Municipal League’s role [09:57] What does home rule mean [16:24] Concerns with the inability to integrate SUTS with own website [22:20] What CML has done to address those reluctant [30:46] The issues with business licenses [36:20] What the business community wished they knew more about [38:54] How the increase in online spending incentivized governments and jurisdictions [42:47] A safe harbor system [51:35] CML’s top two priorities in 2021 [53:20] What to keep in mind with the sales tax shift from a business perspective Quotables: “There’s a lot of concern that SUTS, while it’s wonderful for calculating and remitting taxes to the state, it’s not as useful unless you want to invest a decent amount of money hiring a contractor to interface SUTS with your website. It’s not as useful for interacting with your customers.” - Ed Sealover [17:17] “SUTS is not a one size fits all solution, nor is it really honestly a solution if you’re a multistate vendor selling outside of the state of Colorado.” - Judy Vorndran [18:00] “It is an issue that we have flagged and want to talk about again, because business licenses are something that I think are really problematic. Like there’s no way a business in Massachusetts cares about getting a business license in all the self-collecting home rules jurisdictions.” - Laurel Witt [31:57] “SUTS and the pandemic all kind of happened around the same time… in March of last year, which was a little bit chaotic for all of us. But as cities start seeing money coming in through that way, they just started jumping on SUTS a lot faster.” - Laurel Witt [39:32] “I think the question here is not completely how do we make sure that everyone complies. How do we make sure that compliance is not an overburdensome thing?” - Ed Sealover [54:19] Relevant Links: Ed Sealover on Twitter: @ESealoverDenBiz Ed Sealover on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ed-sealover-71116416a/ Denver Business Journal: bizjournals.com/denver Laurel Witt on Twitter: @COMuniLawyer Laurel Witt on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/laurelwitt Colorado Municipal League: cml.org

In this episode we’re speaking with Dr. Lisa Calder, CEO of the Canadian Medical Protective Association, known as the CMPA. She stepped into the role in August last year and is the CMPA’s first female CEO. Dr. Calder studied medicine at the University of Western Ontario and did an Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Ottawa. She has a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology and was an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Calder pursued her passion for patient safety by completing two additional fellowships: the Patient Safety Fellowship in Emergency Medicine from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation, and the American Hospital Association’s Fellowship in Patient Safety Leadership. She spent more than a decade practising as an emergency physician before joining the CMPA in 2015 as the Director of Medical Care Analytics. When Covid 19 hit, Dr. Calder and her leadership team moved quickly, using a variety of tools to support their physician members during this tumultuous year. She credits her own experience as an emergency physician for teaching her disaster training and how to live with unpredictability. Today Dr. Calder says the mission of the CMPA has never been more important - to protect the professional integrity of physicians and promote the safety of medical care. Quotables “There are things that we can see that are right in front of us, and are being reported in terms of numbers, but there are impacts that are more subtle – on our well-being, on the way we work together, and those are the ones that I find tricky to put my finger on and understand.” – LC “We have a phone line which is available to our membership and we receive up to 200 calls a day from our physicians asking for advice.” – LC “We’re always, when we look at medico-legal data looking back in time. We’re limited by what’s actually documented and that’s a significant limitation because we know that a lot happens in the moment when physicians are making critical decisions that does not get documented.” – LC “I’ve seen a real shift, which I think is hugely positive to a more of a personal tone to the communication, more of a ‘sharing struggles’ and a willingness to be humble and authentic on the part of leaders.” – LC “I want to know from employees, what does it mean when we say ‘We are here for you? What does that translate for you in tangible terms in your day-to-day work?’” – LC “I’m fiercely protective of my lunch break every day. I need time away from my computer and I use that time to go for a quick walk around the block and then to meditate.” – LC “At HIROC we introduced the Collision Chats, where we pair up staff randomly and they meet up for 5-10 minutes and that’s a way of having those hallways conversations online if possible.” – PAD “The challenges ahead for the healthcare system are huge and so we will need more collaborative approaches to address these. I don’t think siloing organizations – everyone doing their own thing –is going to advance us where we need to be.” – LC Mentioned in this Episode: CMPA University of Ottawa – Faculty of Medicine Dr. Mamta Gautam Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. For this special series HIROC is partnering with the Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario (AFHTO) to highlight the work of several amazing primary healthcare teams. In this episode we speak with Robin Mackie, Executive Director, Delhi Family Health Team; Roxanne Pierssens-Silva, Clinical Services Manager/RPN, Delhi Family Health Team; and Rebecca Spencer-Knight, Nurse Practitioner, Delhi Family Health Team. Migrant workers constitute a large portion of the workforce in rural Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties. In Haldimand-Norfolk, there are 204 farms that hire and house over 3,300 Seasonal Agricultural Workers (SAW). The Delhi Family Health Team has traditionally provided primary care services to the workers and were the first people called when a case of COVID was reported. Within hours they transitioned to a fully-functional mobile care team. And they never looked back. Using their cars, cell phones, and as much equipment and supplies as they could carry, Robin, Roxanne and Rebecca attended to the physical, mental and emotional needs of the workers who were isolated, spoke a different language, and were far from home. The experience of providing low-tech care in an unpredictable environment reminded the team of why they became nurses in the first place and the importance of looking out for each other. Quotables “There were a lot of barriers this year for the agricultural workers being able to access primary care.” – RPS “Within 20 minutes, I was on the phone calling my team and saying, ‘Can we start going out to these farms in the next couple of hours?’ I had no doubt that the team was going to respond in a positive way.” – RM “My role as the Executive Director was to make sure that this team felt safe and that they were well before anything else so they could provide the great service they did to these workers.” – RM “We were out there knowing that at any point in time if I needed supplies, if I needed support, if I needed just a phone call, I had people available to me at any time of day.” – RSK “It’s amazing when you’re in something as big as this, how things just seem to fall into place.” – RPS “By offering accurate information, by reassuring them about their care, and being there for them on an emotional basis as well, we were really able to enhance their ability to heal, their ability to cope with the isolation they were going through at that time.” – RSK “The admin side we have to do now is taking away from that emotional, hands-on nursing that most of us got into healthcare for.” – RPS “We put safety first, we put our workers first, we put our patients first and then we moved forward.” – RM Mentioned in this Episode: AFHTO Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario Delhi Family Health Team Migrant workers from Trinidad and Tobago stuck in Haldimand-Norfolk Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. If you listened to an earlier episode where I discussed my sales trend predictions for 2020 and beyond, this is a great episode for you because it takes it to the next level to help you identify how do you keep growing those personal relationships, what does that look like, who should they be with and how do you ensure that you are focusing on the right types of activities for each type of person. Biggest Takeaways: Too often we overlook the opportunity to connect when we're having conversations with individuals, we simply think they're not important enough because they're not a potential client. By doing that, we're diminishing the value that they could bring to the table for us because we're desperately looking for clients. The three relationship currencies - clients, collaborators and connectors, are all important. Our collaborators and connectors can indirectly and directly lead us to more clients. In these relationship currencies, you are in charge of how much goes in and how much gets taken out. There needs to be kind of a reciprocal back and forth because you can't have too much going and not enough coming out or vice versa. Quotables: There is no shortage of clients out there in the world for you to be able to tap into. Your whole thing is to find as many people that you can serve every single day, at least one person. Collaborate and partner with complimentary businesses to create more bandwidth, more expertise and more value for both your audiences. Highlights: Why relationships are like money in the bank [01:29] What happens when you only see everyone as a potential customer [03:19] There is no competition, only other people you can collaborate with. When you collaborate, you are able to sell in a way where you wouldn't be able to do individually. [07:05] Why partnering with complimentary businesses allows you to reach out to many more people [10:18] How to ensure that your collaboration agreement fairly benefits both you and the person/business you are collaborating with [11:07] There are people out there who love to connect people and why it is ok to ask them to connect you with people who need what you have to offer [13:29] Bonus Resource: 5 Steps To Growing Your Abundant Sales Mindset - How to connect authentically with your audience so you can finally sell with more ease and less sleaze. The theme of today's episode is happiness and overall wellbeing! I will be talking about how wellbeing has traditionally been measured, such as with gross domestic product, before looking at some more novel approaches to gauging happiness and wellbeing, through genuine progress indicators and gross national happiness. We'll be diving into the concept of the middle path, which is a deep-seated idea that has roots in many traditions, from Buddhism to Christianity, with many ancient civilizations possessing something analogous to it. It is all about avoiding extremes and helps us attain contentment without directly seeking out pleasure. It also means avoiding too many restrictions, self-denial, and austere lifestyles. I'll be talking about what happiness is, where it comes from, and the ways we can foster and observe it in our inner and outer lives. I also want to consider happiness in ways that are less traditional — something beyond mere joy, cheer, and pleasure. Lasting happiness can often be characterized as something more akin to contentment, peace, and satisfaction. Ultimately, sustainable wellbeing can only be achieved when the personal and planetary align, so what is good for you and me and the planet will lead to more lasting happiness all around! Key Points From This Episode: • What is happiness? The many ways that we can broadly define it. • The deep history of the measurement of happiness and wellness. • Simon Kuznets and the idea of gross domestic product; correlation and inconsistencies.• The examples of Singapore and Costa Rica and the genuine progress indicator.• Gross national happiness; the indicator that takes the focus away from economics. • The country of Bhutan as a champion of Gross National Happiness. • The World Happiness Report and the International Day of Happiness.• Components of gross national happiness; complimentary material and spiritual development.• The nations who are at the top of the World Happiness Report!• The middle path as the way to happiness! An old idea that can help us all.• Understanding what this median means; acceptance, non-attachment and mindfulness.• The current situation in Bhutan and its four basic pillars for development.• Applying the middle path to happiness to our own lives; avoiding extremes.• Meditation, inner dialogue, and acceptance — adding to the inner ocean. Quotables: “There are also definitions of happiness that include things like contentment and satisfaction.” — Kristina Hunter [0:01:25]“What I wanted to talk about today though is more than the idea of happiness but how do we get there.” — Kristina Hunter [0:12:29]“The middle way is the way of moderation. It is living in between extremes.” — Kristina Hunter [0:13:00]“I personally like to think of it as having an inner ocean. That is our true selves.” — Kristina Hunter [0:15:39] Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: Kristina Hunter FlourishingSustainable Wellbeing Starter KitWorld Happiness Report International Day of Happiness
After helping other sales professionals sell over 600 million through my sales career, I’ve learnt that it's very different selling products and services for somebody else on behalf of another person or another company, another brand versus having to sell yourself. If you are somebody who is struggling to sell in your business, perhaps it’s because you're serving, serving, serving and you don't know how to transition that into selling. Serving is selling. On this episode, I’ll teach you how to articulate and understand when to shift that dynamic from giving something for free into giving your audience an opportunity to work with you and, most importantly, pay you. Biggest Takeaways: Selling requires money. The transformation is in the transaction. And without a transaction there really isn't a transformation. When you have paid for something, it means that you have put your money where your mouth is. The money you spent have been put towards something that is meaningful to you. And when something is meaningful, you are much more likely to pay attention to it. If you are currently serving somebody and you are not giving them an opportunity to work with you, you are being completely selfish. Allow people to have the full ability to choose whether or not they want to partake of the full depth of your gift. In order to sell with ease, you need to have very clear boundaries. You need to have very clear ideas of where you are willing to do things and where you aren’t. Quotables: There is one constant and that one constant is that serving others is always the golden ticket. [Tweet This] Selling requires money and the transformation is in the transaction. Playing with food in social situations My (happy) hermetic, frumpy side Why I’m holding my breath around some events I’m attending My new year that is starting in March My stand-up memory that has me smiling Client wins that I am so proud to report on! My old curiosity about who people are “off stage” Quotables “There’s so much learning and growth going on, I’m not I can report on it all.” “I really don’t like being told what to do when they haven’t taken the time to understand me.” “My underlying goal is how can I show up the best that I can in my life for myself and for other people.” “The wind is going to pick me up and take me somewhere, and alright, I better be game for the ride.” “That’s kind of the dirty little secret about coaching. If you pick great clients, they get much better results.” “I’m noticing how much I love constant learning.” “What do you love?”
What I let slide for about six or seven months The form of courage I needed to lean on What made me chuckle when I did a financial clean-up An expense breakdown for 2018 Why I am loving looking at a terrible financial situation My year end reflections on 2018 Things I learned this past year What are you learning right now? Quotables “There’s always some amount of courage required to get things to the place you want to be.” “It makes a lot of sense why I accumulated so much debt.” “It is what it is. These were the choices I made.” “But man, what an interesting year! What a privilege to get to play with money.” “I do think my willingness to experience that is actually going to pay off quite a bit.” “I lost my way. I lost my confidence. I broke things.” “That was really what I did all last year. I broke my brain around money.” “I already have everything I need.” “How do I build something that sets people free?”
A bunch of things I went through in pursuit of growth The three phrases I lean on to move myself forward My game plan to hit $1M in about four months What do I need in place around me to offer that level of support to others? The unfortunate return of hyperactive night-time brain The niggling question that had me second guessing and feeling timid My big insight around what had me feeling off My transition from being on the field to being on the sidelines Quotables “There was about four to five months where it just sucked.” “Well, this really sucks and is painful. That probably means I’m on the right track.” “Look where going through all of that got me.” “It’s more pleasant to be in that kind of place.” “I created a new normal for myself.” “I know it’s very important to select the right clients who will really benefit from that level of investment.” “I’ve spent a lot of it.” “Of course I do what I want.” “I don’t really care about status.” “Everyone knows something I don’t and has something to teach me.”
My ambitious goal to raise an industry standard The next level of delegation that I’m seeing The news that I am super, super, super excited to report Why I’m looking forward to being in the passenger seat The work I’m picking back up after about a two-year absence The scary medical news I received Quotables “There’s different levels of leverage.” “Other people were delivering our core service.” “Oh my goodness, ok. This is actually going to happen.” “We’re getting leads automatically without doing any work.” “I found out that I have a medical issue that I was born with.” “I’ve been very fortunate to be healthy most of my life, so this is a new thing to navigate.” “I knew I was creating my world, and I wanted to learn from people who were better at creating their worlds.”
Annie has been sober for 2 years. She never thought twice about her drinking because she didn’t know enough about it. Annie started journaling about her drinking habits as an exploration in March of 2013 which enabled her to stop drinking in December of 2013. Annie is from Colorado and works in marketing. She is married with children and loves the outdoors (hiking, skiing). [ 02:08 ] When did your Elevator hit its bottom? When did you finally decide to stop drinking? Annie was living in London when her Elevator hit bottom the first time. Annie and her family were going to the London Eye (an amusement park) and she had decided it was a good idea to bring in two large beers, packed in her purse, to sip on. “I dropped my purse and the beers exploded, spraying beer all over my children and my parents.” "I had a 'What the fuck has happened, what am I doing?' moment right then.” On another trip, Annie was traveling all over the world for work, she comments, “You’d take off on the airplane and get drunk, and then I’d justify having drinks in the lounge… I was pretty much existing on coffee and alcohol. I realized that I had to get back into regular mommy life. I just remember sitting there thinking, Whoa, what is this?'" [ 04:27 ] Talk to me about your drinking habits? “The plans are my worst enemy! As soon as you start to try to stop something, it becomes even more tempting. It’s like putting yourself on a diet.” Annie had all sorts of ideas/plans: no drinking until 5pm, only having 2 glasses of wine (but after two she didn’t care how many more she consumed), trying to have a sober day... “I remember finding an excuse every single day to drink. I was driving myself further and further into separateness and defensiveness.” [ 06:31 ] How did you make the change (into sobriety)? “I didn’t seek help. I just didn’t know any better. I didn’t know what I didn’t know (referring to all the resources out there). I had a different kind of 'talking-to' with myself one day in the Heathrow airport, I decided to give myself permission to write about this, to explore this in a mindful way." Dr. John Sarno’s work really inspired Annie to dive deeper into understanding her need to drink. [ 09:59 ] What was it like? Annie’s research took her on a journey for 8-9 months. “I was still drinking during the research, but by the time I stopped, I had made peace with it. On an emotional level, I felt free.” “It was like being sick to save my life for about a month. There were a lot of tears and a lot of laughter and joy.” [ 13:23 ] This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol by Annie Grace Paul lets the Cat out of the Bag (meow!) - Annie Grace wrote, “This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol”. It is a MUST read for recovery. [ 14:40 ] What was the push back like after writing a book that wasn’t based on AA? “I questioned the word 'alcoholic' because in my research, any organism can become addicted to something. I took issue with this because we are all built with flesh, blood, bones, and cells… We are all the same. The word 'alcoholic' is really a solace for people.” [ 20:12 ] Annie talks about the Hedonic Threshold and the fact that alcohol is just plain addictive. [ 25:17 ] What is the difference between the conscious and the unconscious mind? Annie speaks wholeheartedly about protecting her unconscious mind and understanding the need to have self-compassion, self-worth and acceptance in this process. [ 31:15 ] Annie’s Projects This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol is available on Amazon. She is also working on a second book that focuses on the first few years of her sobriety, highlighting techniques she used to maintain a clean and naked mind and keep the garbage out. Annie is also putting together a video-based course complete with worksheets and exercises that she hopes to launch this Fall (2016). [ 32:12 ] Rapid Fire Round What was your worst memory from drinking? [ 32:20 ] “Not having the memories. I don’t remember moving day and moving days are supposed to be special. I lost that day.” Did you ever have an “oh-shit” moment? [ 32:52 ] “I had a lot of those. They were all at 3AM when I'd wake up and couldn’t remember how much I’d drank the night before.” What’s your plan in sobriety moving forward? [ 33:10 ] “Continuously protecting my unconscious mind, continuously asking “why” and “what.” What is your favorite resource in recovery? [ 33:33 ] “Ten minutes of watching my breath every single day.” What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (on sobriety)? [ 34:11 ] “It’s more about living than it is about sobriety. Living alcohol free and living your life.” What parting piece of guidance can you give to our listeners who are in recovery or thinking about quitting drinking? [ 34:56 ] “Right now, in this moment, FORGIVE YOURSELF. Realize that you’ve been caught in an addictive trap. The sooner you can get to a place of acceptance and love yourself through this, opens the journey to becoming sober.” QUOTABLES “There are so many people who are heavy drinkers, who don’t believe they are alcoholics, because we use it (the word ‘alcoholic’) as a shield to defend our addiction.” - Annie Grace “Shame, guilt and self-loathing just don’t work. We need understanding, acceptance and love.” - Annie Grace “Acceptance is the answer.” - Paul “As soon as you start to try to stop something, it becomes even more tempting. It’s like putting yourself on a diet.” - Annie Grace Resources Mentioned in this Episode Connect with Cafe RE For $12.00 per month, you can unlimited, private access to groups of like-minded people via meetups, private-unsearchable Facebook groups, and travel.
