Jenny Sinclair is the founder director of the charity Together For The Common Good - but what is 'the common good' and why should we care about it? In this first of two programmes featuring conversations with Jenny, she sketches out her background as a teenager in Liverpool during the 1970's, when her Father, David Sheppard, was Anglican Bishop of Liverpool - and what she has learned by looking back on his 22-year-long partnership with Roman Catholic Archbishop Derek Worlock, and their work for social justice in Liverpool. On next week's programme, Jenny will talk about the work she now regards as her vocation - promoting the common good through her own charity. Plus there's music - including a special song for this Mothering Sunday And another packed notice board! Items for the notice board can be emailed to judithley@manxradio.com

First and foremost, Master David Sheppard is a lovely person. Like many martial arts teachers I know, he's passionate about giving his students all the help and support they need and much more. He's one of those guys who continually goes the extra mile.I first saw Master Sheppard many years ago when he was a young lad making his way up the ranks as a competitor. At that time, he had a unique fighting style that I tried to copy without success. I can honestly say that Master David Sheppard was the first person I saw use a front-leg machine gun sidekick with such precision and accuracy that it blew my mind. I believe his machine gun kick has been copied by many but equalled by none. I talk about his famous sidekick and other things martial arts related. It was lovely to catch up with him and confirm that he hasn't changed and is still lovely.I hope you enjoy our chat as much as I did.I'd be grateful if you could leave a review for the Living Martial Arts podcast using the following links: Apple podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/living-martial-arts/id1558703179Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3MDv2bt1ORsKpD4158cqLA?si=Q9Klv5iQQhOaXiXwhp-OdAPodchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/living-martial-arts-1629450https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/living-martial-arts-1629450Sign up for the newsletter now! at; https://www.livingmartialarts.com

Oborne & Heller on Cricket
The weird genius who revolutionized cricket history

Oborne & Heller on Cricket

Many eccentric geniuses have written about cricket, and indeed played it. Few have been as eccentric as Major Rowland Bowen – or had his genius. In 1970, after years of dedicated research (not all his own) he published Cricket: A History of its growth and development throughout the world. Long out of print, it is still unmatched in its global sweep, its presentation of arcane facts, and its insurrectionary daring (which delighted C L R James) in overturning almost sacred cricketing myths. It riled the cricketing Establishment of its day, especially those seeking to defend white supremacy.Russell Jackson is an award-winning Australian author and journalist. He became fascinated by Bowen and his contribution to cricket history. He has now inherited from the late Murray Hedgecock the daunting task of reviving Bowen's work and making sense of his extraordinary life, as he explains to Peter Oborne and Richard Heller as the guest on their latest cricket-themed podcast.Russell speculates about the motives behind Bowen's very personal and cantankerous crusade for the truth in cricket history. His career had echoes of John Le Carré: he was the son of a disgraced solicitor and served in Intelligence. In spite of family financial problems he attended Westminster School in the 1920s and was noted early as a cricket obsessive although not noted as a player. At seventeen, he became a member of the MCC (thanks to an influential proposer. Already a natural contrarian, he read cricket literature copiously and decided that almost all of it needed challenge and correction by himself. His actual trigger was Roy Webber, the leading scorer, who was the authority for a wrong fact on a quiz show. It inspired a lifetime's war for his view of the truth in cricket. To achieve an outlet for this, he eventually founded his own subscription-only journal Cricket Quarterly in 1963. He had a habit of quarrelling violently with subscribers, striking them off, and rejecting new ones for fear that they were the old ones trying to sneak up on him under assumed names. This business model is not normally recommended to publishers, but CQ survived for 32 issues until 1971 and produced a highly influential corpus of work as the basis for his history. With its book it deserves a full re-issue.The undismissed subscribers formed a global network of amateur cricket historians and statisticians. Bowen was astute enough to enlist them as volunteer contributors of obscure local materials which he needed. Peter Hain was among them, and submitted to a volley of demands. He said that his only supporters for stopping the apartheid tour of 1970 in the world of cricket were John Arlott, David Sheppard – and Bowen.Russell suggests that Bowen's central mission was to correct the established Anglocentric history of cricket with its almost exclusive focus on first-class matches. He stressed especially the long success of American cricket and the impact of its exclusion from the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1911.Financial pressures drove Bowen into the army. He served first in India and then in Intelligence in London in the 1950s as a map and topographical analyst. His main achievement was to be the first to detect the Soviet missiles which provoked the Cuban crisis of 1962.Continue reading here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-115-the-weird-genius-who-revolutionized-cricket-history/Get in touch with us by emailing obornehellercricket@outlook.com, we would love to hear from you!

Putin's war is being fought on many fronts. A real war in Ukraine, but also an economic and energy war in the rest of Europe. This week our guests are David Sheppard, FT Energy Editor based in London and Derek Brower, US Energy Editor for the Financial Times and FT Energy Source Editor based in New York.  Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked our guests: Assuming that Russia was at fault for the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, what could be the motivation? How difficult are the high energy prices for residential and industrial energy consumers in Europe now? So far, the energy war has been fought in the gas markets, but are the oil markets next? European governments are offering energy price caps and subsidies to shield consumers from high prices, is this the right approach? In June, Putin predicted that Europe will have a surge of populism that will oust the current governments. Is Italy a one off, or do you foresee government change towards more right-wing leaders in other EU countries?  Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/

From FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, Watt Matters is a podcast all about the energy transition and the shift to a decarbonised economy. In this episode, David, Michaela and Jan discuss where we are, how we got here and where we are going as the global economy continues its quest to ditch carbon emissions by mid-century. The idea of an energy transition has gained a lot of traction in the last few years, having barely been spoken about just a few years ago. The levers of the energy transition are varied but this indicates the interconnectedness of the shift to net zero, which is why this podcast was launched: to connect the dots of the energy transition and show how it is all interrelated. He's 54 years old, and in 1992 he was one of four people convicted of the robbery and murder of Thomas Brannan, a pharmacy owner in Overbrook. Sheppard served 27 years in prison before he was given his freedom. But after an email from the Lieutenant Governor accusing Delaware County's District Attorney of trying to hold up his clemency and a social media post by Kim Kardashian West, Sheppard found himself suddenly in the middle of a war of words on the national stage. The Loft & The Weather Prophets special with Pete Astor in conversation with David Eastaugh Pete Astor was born in England, in 1960.The Loft formed in 1983, the band signing to Creation Records and releasing two singles, "Why Does the Rain" and "Up the Hill and Down the Slope". The band split at the Hammersmith Palais in 1985. Astor then formed The Weather Prophets, continuing to be managed by Creation founder, Alan McGee, and signing to his short-lived Elevation label under the auspice of WEA4 releasing the album Mayflower in 1987. Returning to Creation for Judges, Juries and Horsemen, the band split in 1989. Astor then embarked on a solo career with the albums Submarine (1990) and Zoo (1991) on Creation. Finding success in France, Astor moved to the Danceteria label to release Paradise (1992, as Peter Astor and the Holy Road), and God and Other Stories in 1992. After becoming disillusioned with the music business, he disappeared from view for a number of years, returning in the late 1990s with his Ellis Island Sound and The Wisdom of Harry projects, both releasing music on 7", 12" and 10"[5][6] for a variety of emerging independent labels such as Static Caravan Recordings,Wurlitzer Jukebox and Astor's own label, Faux Lux. The Wisdom of Harry eventually signed to Matador Records, while Ellis Island Sound, Astor's collaboration with David Sheppard, signed with Heavenly Recordings. In 2005, Astor released Hal's Eggs, a solo album including radical reworkings of folk standards on Static Caravan Recordings. At around the same time, Cherry Red released compilation albums featuring his work: The Weather Prophets' Blues Skies and Freerides (The Best Of, 1986–1989),Injury Time (Solo 89–93), a selection of solo work from his two Creation and Danceteria albums. The label also re-issued The Loft's Once More Round the Fair, a collection of their Creation recordings and session tracks. As well as reforming The Loft at this time for a limited number of shows, Astor continued to write, perform and release records with Ellis Island Sound on the Peace Frog label. The solo album, Songbox was released on the Second Language label in 2011, featuring an extra disc of cover versions of the albums' songs by Let's Wrestle, The Raincoats, Darren Hayman, Comet Gain, The Proper Ornaments, Mathew Sawyer, Dollboy and Piano Magic. He works as senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, where he teaches, researches and writes about music; in 2014, he published his study of Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation, as part of Bloomsbury's 33⅓ series. At the beginning of 2015, Astor signed to Fortuna Pop, releasing the single "Mr Music", followed by an album, Spilt Milk, recorded with James Hoare of Ultimate Painting, Proper Ornaments, and Veronica Falls.

It’s 2007. Shutter shades are all the rage. People have to juggle ipods and flip phones for their respective music and T9 texting needs. Facebook is replacing My space. Transformers has just come out on the big screen. Picture a ninth-grade boy in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, Canada. One frosty February morning about, he enters his school wearing a pink shirt. The jeers start quietly, as people nudge and elbow one another, snickering under their breaths. Pink shirt. He’s unaware until louder, the quiet jeering quickly gains momentum, raucous name calling ensues, and the taunting continues relentlessly throughout the day. The boy, who entered his high-school that day, unaware that a singular colour could make him feel so wrong, emerges, crushed by the barrage of cruel insults and bullying. Thankfully, two Grade 12 students Travis Price and David Sheppard decide to take an iconic stand against bullying that day. They go to a nearby discount store and buy 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the next day. Overnight, more than 850 kids get the memo and show up to school the next day dawning pink shirts in solidarity with the Grade 9 boy. More than 10 years later, their act of standing up to bullying has grown into a worldwide movement called Pink Shirt Day. In honour of Pink Shirt Day, which takes place February 27th 2019, I thought I’d gather a few terrific ideas that anyone could use to celebrate kindness in schools and communities for this special bonus episode of KindSight 101. You’ll hear from a music teacher (Margaret Dzbik), a dance teacher (Karley Allen), a classroom teacher (Danielle Miller), and I’ll give you two bonus ideas (inspired by Tamara Letter and Laurie McIntosh) that you could implement in your classroom for the special day! #pinkshirtday2019

Clare Balding's at Lords Cricket ground in London to explore the demise of the amateur gentleman and the rise of the professional player, as the 1960's saw the beginning of a new, more egalitarian era, in British sport. In all walks of life, Britain's 'Establishment' was being scrutinized, criticised and satirised so it was hardly surprising that sport and particularly cricket should come under fire. Dr Dilwyn Porter of The International Centre for Sport History and Culture at De Montfort University explains how the MCC had to finally abandon its long-standing distinction between gentlemen and players or amateurs and professionals. The distinction epitomised by David Sheppard (later Bishop of Liverpool) and Yorkshireman, Fred Trueman. Readers: Sean Baker and Nyasha Hatendi.
